(Music) Hey whats going on everybody today we are at UCLA conducting a
social experiment where our good friend Austin
is gonna be going around UCLA signing
to people and find directions to where to go
I'm David!
Hi! I'm Jessica!
I'm Brian!
Hey! I'm Austin!
Let's Go!!
(Music)
Hey I'm looking for the basketball courts
A big building, a gym
Thank you!
I'm looking for this
Maybe you can help me?
Where?
Meanwhile...
(Funny Music)
(Funny Music)
Do you know where the basketball courts are? (Funny Music)
Not here? Ok
Later...
It's a big building
Basketball team?
Basketball? Yeah
Go that way
Go that way
and then downhill
and then its just straight
Mm...
Pauley?
Do you know where?
(laughing)
It's umm
Yeah
The stairs
and then down the stairs. Down the stairs?
I can just take him there
You could?
Yeah
Oh Ok
I can take you with me, yeah. You'll take me there? Thank you!
I'm sorry, I'm bad at this
Ooh it's Pauley Pavilion
Yeah it's Pauley Pavilion, right here?
Umm, let me make sure this is the
This is a parking structire
What's this area?
Ummm
Like where? Ahhh! Wait!
Wait
Do you guys know sign?
Do you know where? Pauley Pavilion, oh!
This way! Yeah, Come with us! Yeah
Yeah!
Soon After!
Social experiment, we're like recording over there
we just wanna see how people react to like people with sign language
Ok and (oh yeah, yeah)
and is it cool if we like use your, like, reaction to the video
Ok. Yeah go for it, definitely! (mhm)
Have you guys ever like dealt with sign language before?
Yeah I had like uhh, I had a friend like
a childhood friend who had a, a deaf
(music playing)
and he was a like a family member, like
So I know how...
Do you feel...
I just don't understand sign language, I wish I, I wish I paid attention
a little bit more ... yeah
I was in a class but I didn't really...
Oh (laughing) Yeah thats what I was gonna ask you
Do you feel like its important to know sign language?
I think it is yeah. (yeah) I would say it is. (you think so)
What do you think, what do you think about the experience, like
Have you ever dealt, like, with a Deaf person before?
Yeah, I used to work in fast food, (and sign language) and like they would
a lot of people can't really hear very well and use sign language
then, I don't know how to like do sign language
but, it's pretty self explanatory like what they're trying to say, so (mhm)
Bewildered. Oh, bewildered? Oh ok
It's hard I guess, yeah
Yeah. I'm Austin, and I'm actually Deaf (oh ok)
and I can, I can speak and I sign as well (oh ok)
So, uh, did, when I asked you do you know, I was saying do you know sign language
Ohh, no. And you're like no no no no
Did you know what I was saying or what is more of
you, you
What was your, what was your thought process?
I thought like you said you can't like talk
So, like where am I going like I have to go somewhere
That's what I thought so I tried to take you there
Oh cool. Do you, do you feel like it's important to know ASL
Uuhhhhh
And also, we just wanted to know how did it feel when, uhh
he came up to you and asked you for directions in Sign Language
He came, I felt bad that I didn't know Sign Language
So I felt like, uhh,
You know, I wasn't able to help him as much
So you do feel like its important to learn Sign Language?
It's important for scenarios like this, yeah
Like what do you think
What was like your initial response? Like
So I got worried, like, I know like
very little, I just know like, umm
How are you and like.. Oh so you know a little bit of Sign Language (oh wow thats cool!) Thats it... That's good yeah!
But... How'd you learn....
Oh yeah, I can take you or like
Yeah, I don't know how to ask all that
How did you learn that?
Umm, I had a coworker who was, uhh, deaf
and so, umm, our supervisors had her like
teach us a little bit every week at our staff meetings
So cool. Do you feel like its important to know Sign Language?
Yeah! I tink it's very important just because like it
it excludes a lot of people, like for me I'm like ahh
I wanna help!
So we just wanted to know how did you feel
when, uhh, he was aking you for directions
And he couldn't speak to you. (yeah)
Uhhh,
Well I thought of taking out my phone for him to type (laughing)
Do, do any of you guys know Sign Language at all?
No, thats why I was so, like, scared
becuase I was like, Fuck,
I dont know how to uh sign it
Oh yeah
You did great man, you did
Yeah, you guys did great
Thank you so much!
And last question, do you guys feel like its important to know sign Language at all?
Yeah, cause at the ends its like
communication itself is like it's necessary
If we weren't able to communicate, like think about it
If I didn't even know his gestures
Then I'd be like, Fucked, cause then I'd be like what does he want
(Yeah) Do you get me?
Yeah, exactly
And, is it ok if we use you guys in the video, your faces?
Yeah, definitely (x 2). No problem!
Thank you guys!
So, from the interviews, we observed that
many people found it necessary to know ASL
people automatically started using hand gestures
when they realized that Austin was Deaf
And, in addition, a few people knew sign gestures
From work or personal friends
which shows that Deaf people are just as much
a part of the community as hearing people!
Some people express pity, saying
how they felt how they felt bad
about not knowing Sign Language
and not being able to help.
Some people were lost and did not know how
how to help Autin at all, and found new ways
to communicate with him
Mostly by using their phones!
However, this was not an effective way of communication
and shows that learning ASL is crucial!
Thank you!
