Spain ramp up preparations for World Cup warm-up clash against Switzerland - Health tips - Duration: 4:08.
Spain ramp up preparations for World Cup warm-up clash against Switzerland
David de Gea has high hopes for Spain at this summer's World Cup and is confident they have what it takes to come away with their second winner's medal.
After crashing out of the last tournament in Brazil four years ago in the group stages, including a 5-1 opening game hammering by Holland, the Spanish travel to Russia with a point to prove.
Spain are entering the tournament on the back of an incredibly impressive qualifying campaign where they finished top of a group that included Italy, who they drew 1-1 with before putting three past them in Madrid.
Before they look to make amends in Russia, though, they have two warm-up matches to contest.
First up are Switzerland on Sunday night at Villarreal's Estadio de la Ceramica before they face Tunisia in Krasnodar, Russia.
They prepared for their first friendly in Villarreal on Saturday, and were in understandably high spirits.
'I'm really excited for this World Cup to get under way,' De Gea said according to the Mirror.
'I've got high hopes and I'm really looking forward to it.
'We have a great national side and a really top group of players.
It was a competitive, high-tempo training session overseen by head coach Julen Lopetegui and it is a sign of intent from the Spain camp.
Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets helped create such an atmosphere, as they were seen battling hard for the ball in a number of drills.
Meanwhile, Andres Iniesta was the cool, calm and collected midfielder maestro that keeps the Spain side grounded and focused.
Despite their upcoming friendlies lacking the competitive pressure that comes hand in hand with a World Cup group stage match, the Spanish will look to send a signal to their rivals.
That they are not the same side that went out with a whimper in Rio back in 2014.
Their first group game will be a monumental test, too.
They face the current European champions Portugal at the Fisht Olympic Stadium on June 15.
Portugal looked well-drilled and organised in their goalless draw with Belgium on Saturday night, and so will provide stubborn opposition to a Spain side full to the brim with creativity and imagination.
And De Gea feels they have enough quality to replicate their first World Cup win in South Africa eight years ago. .
'We have come off the back of a really excellent qualification campaign and now it's time for the best bit to get started.
'So now for the good bit, the World Cup tournament itself, and let's enjoy it, take things game by game, try and perform well and hopefully have a real go at it and maybe even win the World Cup.
