French Open 2018: Serena Williams, Maria Sharapova overcome different challenges to stay on course for last-16 collision

In her second round against Australian Ashleigh Barty, when Serena Williams was trailing by a set and a break, she won a point on her opponent's serve and yelled her trademark, loud "Come on!" to will herself into action and shake off her inertia.

Two points later, she would let out another primal roar and fistpump — this time after an easy putaway at the net.

Serena broke back in that game and then went on to win the match 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 in an hour and 48 minutes.

Serena's win over the 17th-seeded Barty was her first against a top-20 player since returning from a 15-month break due to her pregnancy and post-birth health complications.

It was also the first win that gave concrete evidence that Serena is on the path to returning to the top of the women's game.

While Serenas first round match against Kristyna Pliskova was a contest of big serves and few rallies, Bartys crafty slice, well-placed forehands and variety troubled the American in the opening set.

Serenas movement looked sluggish as she was made to run from one corner of the court to another and she took time to recover between points.

She miscued her shots and leaked unforced errors, which allowed Barty to seal the opening set in just 31 minutes.

When Barty broke for love in the second set, a sense of dread filled Court Phillipe Chatrier.

But not for the 23-time Grand Slam champion.

Serena has been playing far from her best tennis but in both her opening two rounds she was able to dig deep and flip a switch when she needed it the most.

It was her champions mentality and never-say-die attitude that kicked in as she cleaned up her game and started hitting with more depth and pace.

Her ever-reliant serve helped her secure some easy points and as she grew in confidence, her 22-year-old opponent faded away.

Im probably not where I was before I left, Serena said in a post-match press conference after her win.

But the good news is I feel like Im definitely going to get there.

And I dont want to get there, I want to get beyond there.

I dont want to limit myself.

Thats what I want to look forward to doing..

Serena, who has won the French Open thrice in her career, has been quite vocal about her desire for a record-equalling 24th Major title.

Not that she needed any extra motivation, but the former World No 1 is playing with a changed perspective and a fresh outlook since becoming a mum.

Her priorities may have shifted but the drive is still there, and her reflective mood in press conferences has revealed a different facet to her personality.

This is a Grand Slam, my first one back.

I want to do the best that I can.

I want to be able to just do my best and one day tell my daughter that I tried my best.

When I was out there, thats all I was trying to do, Serena said on Thursday.

She might be unseeded and ranked outside the top-450 in the world at the moment, but once she steps on court she still has the aura of a ruthless competitor.

Her coach Patrick Mouratoglou had said ahead of Roland Garros that Serena is in the tournament to win the whole thing, otherwise she would not have entered the claycourt Major.

Two matches down, and she is only getting better with every challenge.

Serena, who had played only four matches (won two), since making her return after pregnancy needs more match time to continue her quest to get back to her best.

However, her next opponent could prove to be her sternest test yet.

Germanys Julia Goerges, seeded 11, has a wicked serve and powerful shotmaking in her arsenal and has the ability to match Serena for strength and pace on the court.

Goerges reached the final at Charleston in the buildup to the French Open the third round at Madrid.

If Serena does emerge victorious in her third round on Saturday, she could have a chance to renew her lopsided rivalry with Maria Sharapova.

Sharapovas grind on clay.

In 2007, Sharapova famously called herself a "cow on ice" on clay because of her struggles with movement on the surface.

However, over the past decade the Russians tenacity and resilience helped her master her least preferred surface as she won the French Open in 2012 and 2014.

Ironically, for all her dislike of clay, this is the only Major that Sharapova has won twice in her career.

This year, Sharapova made her return to Roland Garros after a gap of two years — she was suspended in 2016 for doping and was then controversially denied a wildcard in 2017.

She ensured that her ranking was high enough to not have to rely on any help from the organisers and a timely semi-final run at Rome helped her be seeded 28th at Roland Garros.

In her opening round against Dutch qualifier Richel Hogenkamp, Sharapova was leading 6-1, 4-3 when she dropped six games on the trot to end up trailing 0-3 in the deciding set.

Just when it looked like the match was slipping from her hands, Sharapovas mental toughness came to her rescue as she put up a gritty fightback to reel off six straight games ad win 6-1, 4-6, 6-3.

The five-time Grand Slam champion had a relatively easier outing in the second round, winning 7-5, 6-4 over World No 50 Donna Vekic but even this match had its fair share of drama.

Vekic broke in the very first game of the match and even though she couldnt hold on the advantage for long, she never let Sharapova breathe easy.

The Russian needed five match points to eventually seal hard-fought victory.

The biggest challenger for Sharapova is consistency.

Over a best-of-three match, the Russian has suffered from lapses in concentration and has particularly had issues while closing sets out.

Even against Vekic, Sharapova was serving for the match at 5-3 when she was broken.

Her unreliable serve — Sharapova has hit 12 double faults through two matches — tends to let her down at crucial junctures.

Her movement on clay has improved over the years but she still remains an awkward slider on this surface.

In her title-winning run in 2014, Sharapova had to battle three-set marathons from the last-16 right to the final, and it is her fortitude which is her biggest strength.

When her back is against the wall, Sharapova manages to come up with some of her best tennis.

Its not always pretty, but Sharapova has some of the strongest survival instincts in the sport and never stops fighting till the very last point.

I love the challenge of being in a Grand Slam draw and figuring out a way to win.

I mean, throughout two weeks, you play against different opponents and different circumstances.

So there are a lot of ups and downs, a lot of different feelings, different matchups, Sharapova said after her win over Vekic.

Youve just got to find a way how to handle your emotions and how you handle the matches physically.

I thrive on that.

I enjoy that challenge, trying to see how I can bring that out of me, she added.

The former World No 1 will need all her resources in her next match against 6th seed Karolina Pliskova.

Scott Disick's Blaming The Altitude In Wyoming For Flirting & Begging Sofia For Forgiveness

Word has it, Scott Disick is totally regretting flirting with that mystery woman while at

Kanye West's listening party in Wyoming!

Now he's hoping his GF Sofia Richie won't dump him!

EXCLUSIVE details!

Scott Disick, 33, had fans up in arms when he was spotted getting handsy with a mystery

girl who definitely wasn't his girlfriend Sofia Richie, 19, while he was partying at

Kanye West's listening party on Thursday, May 31!

He was also telling people he was "single," according to TMZ.

Now, thanks to our insiders, we're learning what happened before the trip and how Sofia

is coping with the scandal.

"Scott and Sofia had a big fight before he left for Wyoming, she was not invited to

Kanye's listening party and was hurt that Scott would go without her," an insider

tells HollywoodLife.com EXCLUSIVELY.

"But they did not break up before he left, and as of now they are still together."

The source added that Scott is blaming the alcohol for his questionable behavior at the

shindig.

"Scott's totally denying cheating on her.

He's saying it was just a couple of loose moments that got caught on tape and blown

out of proportion.

He's blaming the altitude in Wyoming because the drinks hit him so hard.

He realizes he messed up and is very remorseful.

He's begging Sofia to forgive him.

She hasn't decided yet one way or another, and from what her friends are saying she isn't

ready to leave him, not yet at least."

We also learned how Scott's ex and baby daddy Kourtney Kardardashian is reacting to

the scandalous image.

"Kourtney has seen the pic of Scott at Kanye's listening party and she can't help but feel

sorry for Sofia.

She knows exactly how it feels to be in her position and she feels sad for her," a source

told HollywoodLife.com EXCLUSIVELY.

"There's a part of her that feels vindicated too — she's not going to say 'I told

you so' to Sofia, but there's a part of her that does feel that.

Scott has a lot of demons and it's clear he'll never change."

Seven tips for moving abroad. - Duration: 7:29.

Hello and welcome to another video for the British Council's LearnEnglish Teens website

and their YouTube channel.

I'm Molly, and in today's video I wanted to give you seven tips for moving abroad.

Moving abroad is a really, really exciting opportunity, but it can also be daunting and

a bit overwhelming.

I'm from the UK but I have now moved abroad twice to live in other countries.

Last year I went to Spain, to Alcalá de Henares near Madrid, to study at the university there

for four months.

And more recently, a month ago I moved to Río Cuarto in Argentina, to work as an English

language assistant for the British Council.

Because of these two experiences, I feel like I know a bit about the process now of moving

abroad, and I wanted to share some advice, some things that I have learned, with you

guys.

My first tip is to be organised.

I can't stress enough how important organisation is!

It's so important to make a note of any deadlines you might have, so any applications

or any documents you need to submit.

Make sure you know when you need to do all these important things.

You should also save all your important emails and other documents that you might have in

folders on your computer, and remember to back these up.

And my most important piece of advice is: do not leave things until the last minute.

Make sure you know well in advance when you're going to need to submit things, if you need

to go to places, if anything needs signing or posting – make sure you are on top of

your deadlines and do things as soon as you can to avoid stress in the long term.

My second tip is to be proactive.

If at any point in the process of organising yourself to move abroad you have a question

or you're unsure about something, you need to find the relevant person and email them

or, even better, give them a call.

Under the umbrella of being proactive, I also think it's really important to try and reach

out and utilise your networks.

You should ask around and try and get in contact with people who have been through your experience.

And, linked to that, if you can find any contacts in the country that you're going to, then

that can be extremely helpful.

If you can find somebody who can meet you at the airport, for example, or show you around

your new city, or maybe even help you find accommodation, any of these things can really,

really help you when you're moving to somewhere that you don't really have any familiarity

with.

My third tip is to be patient.

Although, as I've said, it's a really good idea to be organised and be proactive,

sometimes administration and paperwork can just take time and there's nothing you can

really do about it.

So, those are my first three pieces of advice: to be organised, to be proactive and to be

patient.

So those things are maybe more general.

Now I want to talk about four more-specific areas that you're going to have to negotiate

if you move abroad.

And the first of these is entry requirements.

It's really important to make sure that your passport, or whatever document that you're

going to be travelling with, is valid and up to date.

Depending on where you're going, you may need to apply for a visa.

Important things to bear in mind with visas is that there is sometimes a cost, and I think

most of the time you will need to travel to the embassy.

So, I had to get a visa to come here to Argentina, and for that I had to go into London, and

often times you'll have to go more than once to hand in your passport and your application

and then to collect it later.

The next thing I wanted to talk about is health.

You should look online and visit your doctor four to six weeks in advance to see if there's

any vaccinations you'll be needing for the place where you're going to go.

If you're from Europe and you're travelling to another place in Europe, make sure to get

a EHIC card – so that's a European Health Insurance Card.

It's free to get, and you should definitely get one and take it with you, if you can,

because it will help if you are ill or injured whilst you're abroad.

Generally speaking, make sure to get insurance wherever you're going.

If you're going to be abroad through some kind of programme, like a university placement,

make sure to check to see whether your university is going to cover insurance for you or not

and, if not, make sure to take out some of your own insurance.

It's just the smart thing to do.

Moving on, a really important topic: money.

Moving abroad can be an expensive process, and preparing to manage your finances in another

country can sometimes be a bit complicated.

One thing you should definitely do is check around and see if there is any financial support

available to you.

So, scholarships or grants or anything like that.

For example, I managed to get a Erasmus+ grant for my university placement in Spain, and

this really helped me cover my living costs while I was there.

Another thing to say on money is to make sure that you're aware of any hidden costs, so

this might be things to do with flights or visas or vaccinations … If you can, you

should change up at least some of your money before you go, so you have enough cash to

get you started when you move abroad.

Also, make sure that you have enough savings in bank accounts that you can access if you

need to.

Finally on money, pre-pay travel cards, so, for example, Revolut, the Post Office Travel

Money Card and the STA Travel ISIC CashFLEX card, can be really, really useful.

You can load up these types of cards with any currency and then pay for things anywhere

in the world, often with reasonable administrative fees.

The final topic I wanted to talk about today is accommodation.

Depending on where you're going and what you're doing, it may be best to find accommodation

before you go, or it may be best to wait until you get there and then start looking.

Regardless, the most important thing to do is to seek out the advice of people that have

been and listen to what they say.

You should think about the different kinds of living options that are available to you,

so this might be studio apartments, student residences, shared flats, living with a host

family, or maybe any other options.

And think about which one of these fit with you and your lifestyle and your budget and

all of that.

Websites can be really useful – when I went to Spain, I found a shared flat on one of

these websites a couple of weeks before I was moving and I signed for it in advance.

Very important to say: do not sign for something unless you're absolutely sure, and often

it is a very good idea to, if you can, see the place in person before you agree to something.

If you decide to wait until you arrive and then look around, it's a good idea to book

yourself a hostel or an Airbnb for a few days or weeks while you figure out what the options

are and where you want to live.

So, that's it!

That's all I have for you today.

I hope you found the seven tips, pieces of advice, useful and if you have any questions

about moving abroad or you'd like me to make more videos of this sort in the future,

please let me know in the comments below, and I will see you soon.

Bye!

Laurentian student advocates for preferred name policy - Duration: 2:21.

My name is Victoria Lacroix, I am studying computer science

and I expect to graduate in October of 2018

As a result of me having started using the name Victoria

pretty early on in my transition

A bit earlier than I was expecting

I hadn't legally changed my name to Victoria at that point

Yet everyone I know within my program

and just on campus in general

knew me exclusively by the name Victoria

Which is a problem when you have class lists and

D2L and everything else listing a different name

But personally I came into contact with Pride @ Laurentian

several years ago

and organized a meeting with the registrar

to figure out what could be done about this

And I explained that it should be pretty easy to

implement a preferred name system

Any student at Laurentian, regardless of

reason, should be able to have themselves

a preferred name attached to their student profile

that would appear on class lists

That would be the only name that professors

faculty and staff would get to see for that person

If you're a new student registering at Laurentian

all you have to do is log into the hub

click on processes, preferred name

set it, and you're done

That's it

Trans people have come out of the closet, transitioned

Plenty of

exchange students have wanted to go by a more

western name that

for many faculty

would be much easier to pronounce

And people, say, want to

go by a different last name, a nickname or whatever else

Plenty of people have a need for this kind of system

I had run Pride @ Laurentian for about six months

one year

I've been treasurer, I have

done all sorts of organizing for events

at Pride @ Laurentian

It felt like that was a way for me to look out

for other students who would be facing the same obstacles

I would face

By being a part of Pride @ LU

I was just expecting to have

a four-year program

to get my classes done

Very uneventful

I wasn't expecting to leave a mark

on Laurentian University

itself through my education here

Home Remedies: for Bleeding Gums - Duration: 5:04.

A list of home remedies for bleeding gums

Many people suffer with the common problem of bleeding gums.

This can often happen when we brush our teeth, but you may also find blood leaking from the

mouth at night.

This can be very worrying, but the good news

is that it is very easy to treat bleeding gums naturally at home

Let's take a look at some of the best natural

remedies available to treat this problem.

  1.

Wheatgrass Juice Rinse Mix a little water with a teaspoon of wheatgrass

juice, and swish around the mouth for 3 minutes twice a day.

This naturally fights infections in the teeth and gums, and lowers inflammation of gum tissue.

  2.

Baking Soda Paste This is a natural product which is often used

in cooking.

Make a paste by adding a little water to some baking soda and gently brush the teeth and

gums.

This gets rid of acids in the mouth which may be causing the gums to bleed, also destroying

harmful bacteria which sits around the teeth edges.

Do this twice per day.

  3.

Salt Water If you have bleeding gums it is likely that

the gums are inflamed and you may even suffer with toothache.

Salt water is an excellent remedy for this.

Mix 1 teaspoon of sea salt with 250ml of warm water.

Gargle with this mixture and rinse around the entire mouth.

This gets rid of mouth pain quickly and can heal the gums when used regularly.

Do this three to five times per day.

  4.

Neem Leaves Neem leaves are highly effective in treating

problems with the gums, skin and tissue matter of the body.

They destroy harmful invaders and get rid of bleeding gums quickly.

Mash a handful of leaves using a pestle and mortar to make a paste.

Boil these in 1 litre of water for 15 minutes.

Store this and use as a natural mouthwash and gargle for the next 3 days.

Use morning, noon and night.

  5.

Vitamin K Foods Bleeding gums may be caused by a vitamin K

deficiency.

Rather than taking unhealthy supplements, begin eating lots of fresh leafy greens such

as kale, broccoli, spring onions or sprouts to boost your intake.

This may lower inflammation internally within the body.

  6.

Oregano Oil Brushing the teeth with oregano oil has an

anti-inflammatory effect on the gums.

The antioxidants and natural compounds in this wonderful natural product work to heal

gum disease and infections.

It destroys bacteria, fungus, parasites and viruses.

  7.

Aloe Vera Gel Fresh Aloe Vera contains some powerful medicinal

properties.

Rub the pulp from within the leaves all over the gums with the fingers.

Hold this in the mouth for 10-15 minutes before rinsing with warm water.

Do this three times per day for the best effects.

  8.

Green Tea Green tea, or Matcha Green Tea contains powerful

healing properties for the entire body.

Drinking this regularly throughout the day lowers inflammation in the gums, especially

if you swish the tea around the mouth before swallowing.

This rich source of antioxidants works wonders for treating bleeding gums.

  9.

Vitamin C Foods Adding a natural source of vitamin C into

your diet can boost your bodies healing abilities, and heal problems related to the mouth.

We recommend eating Sauerkraut often as this is one of the richest sources on the planet.

Bell peppers and cabbage are also excellent sources.

  10.

Cod Liver Oil or Krill Oil Some studies have shown that gum disease and

bleeding gums are linked with a deficiency of omega 3 fatty acids.

Taking a daily supplement of cod liver oil, or krill oil will boost your intake and potentially

cure the problem.

As you can see, there are a range of home

remedies that you can use to get rid of bleeding gums.

Try out some of these and see which works best for you.

Be sure to brush your teeth at least twice

a day to get rid of plaque, which can inflame your gums and make them bleed.

To learn more about oral health and natural

remedies, please see our other videos.

Thank you very much for listening, a like

is always appreciated and remember to subscribe for more healthy videos.

I wish you great health, wealth and happiness.

The call is out for anybody and everybody who wants to be involved in Palmerston North's very own Fringe Festival to put their hand up and wave it about

Centrepoint Theatre general manager Kate Louise Elliott said registrations were now open for people to express their interest and come up with their live performance concept

A Fringe Family Fund will also have about $8000 allocated to it."This will be for Palmy artists to apply for to get their work up and running for the fringe if they need it

"Elliott said the fringe was open-access arts, "so anyone can be a part of it". "We want to include anything that anybody in the community wants to do

We want anybody and everybody. It's on the fringe but I think we can make it a really big thing

Anything goes."Elliott said the Palmy Fringe Festival would provide opportunities for local and visiting artists, especially those working outside traditional forms and structures

It will be based on the model of the Wellington Fringe Festival, with an emphasis on low-cost, low-tech and fast performances

"This is a great way to bring everyone together, all of the arts sectors and the whole of the community

The more we work together the stronger we get." The festival will be partnering with the Regent on Broadway, Square Edge, Globe 1 and 2, The Dark Room and Centrepoint Theatre and other venues across the city will also be used

Man Utd news: Jose Mourinho 'to offer £53m plus Anthony Martial' for Real Madrid star - Duration: 2:38.

Man Utd news: Jose Mourinho 'to offer £53m plus Anthony Martial' for Real Madrid star

According Don Balon, who are renowned for making outlandish transfer claims, Manchester United are set to offer the Spanish giants £53m (€60m) plus Anthony Martial.

But the Spanish publication claim Real Madrid are unlikely to accept that offer.

Bernabeu bigwig Florentino Perez is reportedly only willing to part with Bale for £88m (€100m).

The Wales international is out of favour at Real Madrid after an injury-plagued 18 months.

He has found himself on the bench for a string of crucial fixtures this term and is likely to be sold to fund a squad rebuild.

Don Balon say Jose Mourinho is eager to bring Bale to Old Trafford.

It is claimed Real Madrid fancy swooping for Martial and that Mourinho has caught wind of their interest.

He is reportedly willing to chuck the French forward into a deal for Bale in an effort to lower the cash price.

Martial has been linked with a move away from United after a difficult campaign.

The 22-year-old has failed to nail down a regular role in Mourinho's team and speculation raged when he was left out of the 18-man squad for the 1-0 win against Watford.

He was spotted driving away from Old Trafford three hours before kick off but Mourinho has revealed he sustained a knee injury in the build up to the final game of the campaign.

He was injured in Fridays training session, yesterday he couldnt train, Mourinho said.
