- A reading from the Book of the Prophet Ezekiel.
Thus says the Lord God,
I, too, will take from the crest of the cedar,
from its topmost branches tear off a tender shoot,
and plant it on a high and lofty mountain;
on the mountain heights of Israel I will plant it.
It shall put forth branches and bear fruit,
and become a majestic cedar.
Birds of every kind shall dwell beneath it,
every winged thing in the shade of its boughs.
And all the trees of the field shall know
that I, the Lord,
bring low the high tree,
lift high the lowly tree,
wither up the green tree,
and make the withered tree bloom.
As I, the Lord, have spoken, so will I do.

of St. Paul to the Corinthians.
Brothers and sisters:
We are always courageous,
although we know that while we are at home in the body
we are away from the Lord,
for we walk by faith, not by sight.
Yet we are courageous,
and we would rather leave the body and go home to the Lord.
Therefore, we aspire to please Him,
whether we are at home or away.
For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ,
so that each may receive recompense,
according to what he did in the body, whether good or evil.

- The Lord be with you.
- [Group] And with your spirit.
- A proclamation of the Holy Gospel,
the good news, according to Mark.
- [Group] Glory to You, O Lord.
- Jesus said to the crowds:
"This is how it is with the kingdom of God;
"it is as if a man were to scatter seed on the land
"and would sleep and rise night and day
"and through it all the seed would sprout and grow,
"he knows not how.
"Of its own accord the land yields fruit,
"first the blade, then the ear,
"then the full grain in the ear.
"And when the grain is ripe, he wields the sickle at once,
"for the harvest has come."
He said,
"To what shall we compare the kingdom of God,
"or what parable can we use for it?
"It is like a mustard seed that,
"when it is sown in the ground,
"is the smallest of all the seeds on the earth.
"But once it is sown, it springs up
"and becomes the largest of plants
"and puts forth large branches,
"so that the birds of the sky can dwell in its shade."
With many such parables he spoke the word to them
as they were able to understand it.
Without parables he did not speak to them,
but to his own disciples he explained everything in private.
The Gospel of the Lord.
- [Group] Praise to you, Lord, Jesus Christ.
- Sometimes we might wonder why Jesus spoke in parables
because some of them are quite difficult to understand
and they did need an explanation.
The two images in today's gospel, however,
are quite simple and very easy to understand.
But parable teaching was the teaching method
back in Jesus' day.
Obviously, they did not have social media
or TV or any of the things we take for granted
as our educational methods today.
So they would tell stories.
That's what a parable is, a story.
A fictional story, but always with a message underneath.
A deeper message beyond the literal words.
And sometimes the people would question what does it mean?
And they'd have to kind of figure it out.
It's kind of like maybe when we were in school
the teacher would give us a question,
and then we'd get together with a small group of students,
and we'd try to figure out the answer
and come back and ask the teacher is this what you meant?
Jesus taught the same way.
But to his apostles or his close disciples
he always explained to them exactly what it meant,
because they too one day would go out and teach.
And the parables today are very easy.
We all know something about planting,
even though we live in the desert,
we know it's pretty basic, that of a,
a plant is supposed to produce a flower, a fruit,
or branches, or leaves, whatever.
First of all it has to be planted in good soil.
It has to get the proper amount of water,
maybe some fertilizer.
Some plants need more shade, others need more sun.
So we read the directions on the plant
and we plant it in our yard or planter or whatever.
And it grows well.
Again, Jesus really wasn't talking about agriculture
or planting or gardening.
The deeper meaning is what is planted in our lives.
By virtue of our baptism's the word of God
was planted in our souls as it were.
And just as a plant needs food, water,
sunshine, shade, nutrition, whatever,
so does our seed of faith need growth,
helps to its growth.
And the best ways to help that seed grow, of course,
is prayer, scripture, the sacraments.
Those, to me, are the three main ingredients,
is that if we're to allow our faith to grow,
then we must continue to feed it
spiritually or scripturally speaking.
Otherwise the plant will die.
I don't have too many plants in my house.
I've always joked when anyone gives me the gift of a plant
when they come to my house they call it hospice.
(group chuckles)
Because I do not have a green thumb.
It's their last stop on their journey of life.
And it usually doesn't last long.
But hopefully that's not true of my faith or your faith.
That our faith continues to grow,
otherwise we'll stagnate and maybe even
kind of lose its vitality, lose its vibrance.
It's like the love of a husband and wife.
They must continue to work on their marriage,
otherwise the marriage will become stagnant.
I hear many people talking,
many couples sometimes that come to me for counseling say
we don't hate each other, but we no longer love each other.
Well, that doesn't happen overnight.
I try to encourage engaged couples when I prepare
them for marriage date each other once a week
for the rest of your lives.
You need to work on your marriage.
So the same advice, on a weekly basis,
if not on a daily basis, we need to work on our faith.
Otherwise it will stagnate or we might even lose our faith
and give up on it all together.
So my challenge is this week,
what can you do to strengthen your faith,
your faith in God, that seed that was planted at baptism?
The best nourishment, of course, is the Eucharist.
For those of you who are watching this on TV,
perhaps you can't receive the Eucharist,
maybe there are communion ministers
to come to visit you, and I hope so.
So, for you, it's reading scripture.
It's praying.
Praying every single day so that faith may increase.
And what might happen if that faith increases?
I think it can be contagious.
It can be contagious in the sense that people see your faith
they know you're a woman or man of great faith.
And they may say I want what you have.
And that's the symbol of the mustard seed.
A tiny seed, and yet it grows apparently
into a great big bush.
Jesus was talking about the early church.
It started out with 12 apostles.
Now we number over one billion Christians
around the planet earth.
From that small seed of apostles has grown
this tremendous faith community.
So the challenge, again, this week open up your bibles.
Spend some time in prayer.
And if you have the opportunity, receive the Eucharist
so your faith will grow and produce much fruit.
Now, let us make our profession of faith
today using the Apostles Creed.
- [Group] I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit
and born of the virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried;
he descended into hell.
On the third day he rose again from the dead.
He ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty.
From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy Catholic church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and life everlasting.
Amen.
- To the God who lifts up the lowly,
exalts the humble, and blesses the poor,
with every good thing,
let us offer our prayers and petitions.
