We need to talk about Shell

Friends of the Earth Netherlands is suing Shell in court for climate change

And we need your help

By now almost everyone agrees that we have to do everything we need to save our climate

Everyone can contribute

Well, almost everyone, cause what about Shell?

What is it doing?

Shell has been one of the top 10 polluters worldwide in the last 30 years

Shell says that we should all be embracing the Paris climate agreement

Sure!

But what is Shell actually doing?

While most of us agree that we should leave oil and gas in the ground

Shell has been busy on spending millions on exploring new oil and gas fields

Shell talks a lot about sustainability

But only about 4 percent of Shell's investments actually go to renewable energy

Shell has known for nearly 30 years that

oil and gas consumption have disastrous consequences for the environment

In those 30 years Shell and Its friends

did not just reduce their drilling activities

they actually drilled for more oil and gas

Shell claims that it's our ally in the battle against climate change

But what is Shell actually doing?

It is busy making climate change even worse

And that's why Friends of the Earth Netherlands is filing a lawsuit in the Dutch courts

We demand that the judge prohibits Shell

from continuing its wreckless climate wrecking behaviour

Climate change is not longer about some sad polar bear

It's about harvest failures right now

It's about forest fires in winter, now

It's about deadly heatwaves, now

We need to fight to keep our world liveable

For us, for our children

That is why we are taking Shell to court

Skyscraper living is in high demand - Duration: 1:55.

Soon it will push the Hardau Tower out of its top place:

the JaBee Tower in Dübendorf.

At 100 m, it will be Switzerland's tallest residential high-rise.

It's scheduled for completion in 2019.

Skyscraper living is popular.

Roughly one out of two people in the city of Zurich could imagine

living in a residential high-rise.

This is the result of a study by sociologist Joelle Zimmerli.

And construction companies too

are relying more and more on high-rise living.

Nowadays, high-rise buildings are being used again

to create landmarks around stations in urban areas, on the one hand,

and to give these areas and the municipalities a face.

On the other hand, people are investing in high-rise buildings

at prime locations in large cities too.

Since 2000,

a large number of residential high-rises have been built in Switzerland.

Eight of them in Zurich alone.

Living high above ground is attractive, especially near railway stations,

for example, in Zürich-Altstetten

where a large number of high-rises are currently being built.

And planners are looking skywards too.

Whether at the new Hardturm stadium in Zurich

or the latest project to be presented at Dreispitz in Basel.

But is there really enough demand in this sometimes high price segment?

The expert is sceptical:

The main challenge with a high-rise is

that a large number of apartments come onto the market at the same time.

So it's a lot for the market to absorb.

So there's probably not enough potential

for filling all the high-rises.

For the moment, high-rise 1 in Zurich's Hardau district

will remain the tallest residential building in Switzerland.
