Why great sermons aren't just for the religious | Rob Bell - Duration: 7:24.

Yeah, that's how it all started for me, is I was in a band and the band broke up—like

college bands do, because everybody had to get jobs—and I was teaching water skiing

at this camp and they said there's going to be a religious service and who wants to

give the sermon?

And I said, "I will."

And all of a sudden, you know, you say something and the words come out of your mouth and then

you're like, "Wait, what?

Give a sermon?"

I had heard a few sermons growing up and I always thought that the sermon raised that

existential question, 'What's for lunch?', you know, it was just boring.

But I came out of band world where you engaged an audience, where there was something happening

in the room from the back row to the front; let's all go somewhere together.

And so I remember doing my first sermon and thinking this is why I'm here.

I'm going to reclaim the sermon as this lost art form.

For many people in our culture, the sermon is just a belief-affirmation device.

Just tell people what they already think so you all can feel smug in your rightness.

For other people, the sermon is how you convince people to give money so you can build bigger

buildings.

For some people, the sermon is just how you get people to vote a certain way.

But you think about Martin Luther King—"I have a dream".

Now that's a sermon.

Nobody heard that sermon and then thought, 'I don't know, he's usually funnier.'

Do you know what I mean?

You were either there or you weren't.

It was dangerous and comforting and healing and provocative and you learned something

and it gave you a new vision for what might be possible—that the sermon is an art form.

And in many ways, in our culture, it's been lost and some of us are trying to reclaim

it as this art form that's somewhere between performance art and guerrilla theater and

a TED talk and a recovery meeting and a revival.

And that a sermon is for everyone.

The sermon isn't for a particular people who have already agreed that they all believe

a particular, narrow set of things.

A sermon is about what it means to be human.

And so a sermon is poetry.

A sermon is science.

A sermon is visual.

A sermon is experiential; I've set stuff on fire, I've had actors planted in the

audience, I've built solar systems out of exercise balls that we hung from the roof,

I've used live animals.

I've done the sermon backward and then forward to make a larger point about time.

Everything you can think of I've probably tried in relation to a sermon.

And right now I do a residency at a club in West Hollywood near where I live, a comedy

club called Largo, and I do these hour-and-15-minute, hour-and-30-minute sermons—I guess you call

it a sermon, a one-man show, and I want to take you somewhere.

And it's history and it's anthropology and it's theology and sometimes it's funny,

and it's pop culture and it's data about all kinds of things, and it all mashes together.

But we want to be inspired.

We want new insight into who we are and who "we" are—we as human beings.

Meaning is like oxygen for the soul; we want to know what it means.

We want to know where it's headed.

We want to make sense of our past.

We want to know how to forgive.

We're looking to make connections because, otherwise, the world is fragmented and fractured.

It just comes at you with no narrative thread.

And one of the things a sermon does is it connects this to this to this and you walk

out of there with a little more sense of centered grounding, like, 'Oh, yeah, that is who we

are.

That is who I am.

That is what we're doing here.'

And that's, to me, a sermon.

I always begin with the depth of the common.

So, you are going about your life and you're getting coffee in the kitchen at work and

somebody says, "Man, I had a rough weekend."

You can go: 'Oh my word, Joan is so annoying.

Oh Bill, another one of his weekend stories."

You can sort of do that—or that can be a door and you can open it and you can say,

"Tell me why your weekend was so rough."

Because, the person, when they say my weekend was so rough they're basically saying: could

you please ask me about my weekend?

And you have no idea.

They may be splitting from their partner.

Their kid may be sick.

They may be in serious financial trouble.

They may have a relative who just got a cancer diagnosis.

So I begin with the idea that there's more going on here and there's always depth in

the common, everyday, mundane, average moments of life.

But you have to be moving a half step slower.

So I begin with most of us are missing all of these fascinating stories, all of these

insights.

It's like the whole universe is a megaphone and it's speaking to us.

It's reminding us what matters.

But generally we have our head down and we're checking our texts.

And secondly there is the universal and there is the particular.

So there are the particulars of a story.

What she was wearing.

He was driving a Ford.

She was in the front seat in a green sweater.

It was a Thursday.

It was raining.

You saw them in a parking lot.

You saw them arguing.

You realized it was some ugly fight between these two lovers and they happened to be having

it in the parking lot of the drugstore, and you describe the details and the particulars

of that moment.

The universal is: love can break your heart.

And it takes a while, it takes a lot of work to keep a relationship together.

So there's the particular and then there's the universal, which is true for all of us.

And so a sermon is moving back and forth between the particulars and the universals.

And it knows the power of a good story and it knows how that story is true at some level

for all of us.

And then thirdly, a sermon is about good news.

What good news do you have to bring us?

Oftentimes the good news needs bad news for it to be good news.

So we're doing some horrible things to our environment.

We're polluting rivers.

We're filling landfills.

We've got issues with the ozone layer.

We've got climate change.

That's the bad news.

The good news is: we can do something about it.

We can all take little steps in our day-to-day lives to actually change the way we think

about the soil and our relationship to the environment.

So, a sermon, if it doesn't have good news at some level then it's missing sort of

the key thing.

But for it to be real, solid, actual, authentic good news it's going to have to be honest

about just what a mess we've made of this place.

Strategies For Managing Grief - Duration: 6:18.

It's been described as the greatest loss

anyone can ever experience, the death of a child.

Any time you grieve a loved one,

it's going to have an impact.

Now, my next guest Debbie, lost her youngest Tony

seven years ago in such a tragic way

that the grief is still overwhelming.

Here's Debbie's story.

It hurts most to see when he's very young.

My youngest son, Tony, was cleaning our pool and drowned.

I can remember my husband calling me and then he said,

"Tony is gone."

I dropped to the floor and I just started screaming,

"My son has drowned!"

When Tony died, a piece of me went with him.

I miss hearing Tony laugh.

I miss him saying, "Hey Mama."

I'll always cry but I'll always have his love in my heart

and those wonderful memories forever.

Well, Debbie is joining me along with our very good friend

and chief medical officer of Pfizer,

Dr. Freda Lewis-Hall, welcome to you both.

(audience applauding)

Debbie, I'm so sorry for your loss.

One thing you'll not hear me say is I know how you feel.

Tell me how this affects you still today.

Well, you know, Dr. Phil,

there's a sense of me that I still feel robbed.

I didn't get to say goodbye to Tony.

I didn't get to tell him that one last time

how much I loved him.

Dr. Freda, how do people deal with this level of grief.

First of all, people should know that this is

highly individual.

This is specific to you, the way that you're going to grieve

and that there's no single right way

to get through this grieving process.

Many people think that that's true and it's just not.

The other thing that's really important is

people don't know some of the emotions that are

gonna come at them.

It may be a whole range of them, everything from anger

to denial to shock, to depression.

These emotions can come at you in any order

and at any time.

You know, most people are able to endure a tragedy

and eventually get to a new normal.

What about those that can't seem to get there?

Estimates are that about 10% of people

who are going through grieving end up having a more

severe form, something that we now have come to call

a complicated grief or grief depression.

People who are experiencing this may have

more severe symptoms and for an extended period of time.

Things like extreme sadness, feelings of isolation,

feelings of depression.

They may feel hopelessness.

In addition to that, they may take on an irrational blame

for the death or the loss of their loved one.

Other symptoms may include sleep disturbances,

an increased use in tobacco and alcohol,

and difficulty in functioning in work situations

and social situations, with relationships

and sometimes even in tasks of daily living,

like getting to the grocery store.

Many people who grieve have a sense that

maybe I don't wanna go on without my loved one.

I've lost my will to live.

People with this complicated grief

may have persistent thoughts of suicide.

It's important if those thoughts occur,

it is time to get immediate help.

I also understand there could be physical effects

associated with particularly this prolonged grief.

A study suggests that someone who has had

a significant loss of a loved one

has a 21 times greater risk of having a heart attack

in the first 24 hours after the death of that loved one.

Another study suggests that there's an increased risk

of heart attack and stroke in the first month

after the loss of a loved one.

What are some strategies for dealing with grief?

So, I think one of the most important ones is

knowing that you are going to work through some pain.

The second would be that some of these emotions

that we talked about are be coming at you

at different times and in different ways

and they may quite take you by surprise.

You should also know that you're gonna uniquely

work your way through this.

No one is gonna tell ya exactly how to do it

'cause it's gonna be different for everyone.

Then, last but not least, there's a point at which

you can and should ask for help.

If your grief is too deep or overwhelming,

as you described, or if the experience is lasting too long.

Then, the other thing that I think is really important

is not forget that physical part.

Talk to your doctor about the fact that you're grieving.

Ask them to help you monitor any medical conditions

that you may have.

Stay on your prescribed treatments and medications

as your doctor is supporting you to.

Don't forget the basics.

I know they're hard to think about at a time like this,

but eating right, getting as much sleep as you can,

and trying to stay as active and get a little bit of

exercise to try and stay healthy during this time.

For many people, it's hard to accept that a future

without your loved one is your new reality.

Support groups and professional counseling

can be really valuable.

Grief is not a mental illness but if you're

struggling with it, don't hesitate to ask for help.

A residential community once bordering Augusta National is now a free parking lot after the club, in a bid to accommodate patrons for the one week each year that it hosts the Masters, enticed homeowners with prices that were too good to turn down.

The two remaining homes in the area are modest, red-brick bungalows that sit in the shadow of Augusta Nationals towering pine trees and the owners of each house have no desire to appease the interests of Augusta National.

We will just continue to be right here and Augusta National can put no kind of money in front of us that would change our minds, Herman Thacker, who together with his wife Elizabeth has lived in their home since 1959, told Reuters during an interview at his house this week.

We raised our family here, and we can go out and buy a new house but we cant buy a home. This is home to us..

Augusta National, which declined to comment, reportedly spent more than US$40 million to expand its borders and ultimately swallow up what was once a quaint community.

As a result, the Thacker home, which is modest in size and surrounded by pine trees, holly bushes and flowering dogwoods, sits across from a sprawling, empty green field for all but one week of the year.

But this week, with the worlds best golfers in town for one of the most revered tournaments on the PGA Tour, which starts on Thursday, the house sticks out like a sore thumb outside Gate 6-A amid a sea of vehicles glistening under the Georgia sun.

The Thackers house is so close to the Masters action that roars from patrons are easily heard from the property, and they also get a heads up on severe weather thanks to the horn that sounds at Augusta National in such an instance.

A few years ago the Thackers sold their other property in the area to Augusta National for an undisclosed sum but only after the club improved an original offer that the octogenarian couple would only describe as ridiculously low.

For the Thackers, their home is where they watched their two children grow and where they helped raise their grandchildren, including Scott Brown, a 34-year-old professional golfer who is ranked 150th in the world and yet to compete in the Masters.

We just dont want to go, Elizabeth Thacker said as she watered the grass in front of her lawn with curlers in her hair. My kids, when they were little they loved going to the tournament and talking to golfers.

Ben Crenshaw was very nice.. The Thackers said that while the club is well aware of their position not to sell, an official from Augusta National stops by every so often to remind them of its interest.

Across the street from the Thackers is the only other home whose owners have stood firm in their decision to stop Augusta National demolishing a house that has been in their family for generations.

Jimmy Richards, whose late parents purchased their house in the 1950s, said his sister now lives there and it has become a gathering place for family during holidays and sporting events.

Were not looking to sell. We enjoy this place, we really do, said Richards. Everybodys grown up here, (my parents) grandkids grew up here. It would be tough to part with it..

Richards called Augusta National good neighbours but said there was no figure his mother would have ever accepted from the club and that he and his nine siblings all feel the same.

During a Masters practice day this week, the Richards clan gathered on the back deck of the house with music playing, beer on ice, while collecting US$50 from patrons looking to park on their property.

The Richards say the traffic outside the front door of the family home on Berckmans Road during Masters week is not a big concern and would not cause them to change their mind about selling up.

Just like the Thackers, Richards said nobody can put a price on their memories, not even the mighty Augusta National Golf Club.

We all have kids, Richards said of himself and his siblings. If we were to part with this property they would be highly devastated because theyve got a lot of memories here too..

SUBTLE MAKEUP FOR BLUE EYES | Beginner Friendly - Duration: 6:44.

Today I'm showing you this subtle makeup look or eye look for blue eyes to make them pop

even more!

Let's get started right away!

Alright I'm gonna start with prepping my eye and I'm using the MAC paint pot in soft ochre

for that.

Just using this random synthetic brush this is actually from the Urban Decay Naked 2 palette.

I'm just gonna use the fluffy end and put this all over my eye.

Now I'm taking a translucent powder, this is the no color setting powder from the Artdeco

Claudia Schiffer collaboration and I'm taking a large fluffy brush, this is the Morphe R40

and I'm putting this into my crease up to my eyebrow.

This will just make the blending easier since this is a subtle look we want it to be very,

very blended.

Using that same fluffy brush I'm using Soft Brown from MAC and I'm placing this above

my crease on two thirds of my eye approximately.

So I'm stopping at around here.

Now since we're doing a look for blue eyes, we want everything, blue is the complimentary

color of orange, so we want everything to be kind of orange or red based because that's

gonna make our eye color really, really pop, but we still want everything to be very, very

blended.

Now using this shader brush, this is the MAC 239 and this copper shade from my Make-up

Atelier palette I'll link the exact name down below, this is just a really nice light kind

of coppery shade.

It does have a bit of shimmer to it, but it's nothing too overpowering and this will really

make the blueness in your eyes come out.

So I'm gonna place this on my movable lid all over.

Now so this line right here is not as sharp as it is now I'm using the MAC 217, it's just

a fluffy brush and I'm blending that slightly out and the other two colors together.

Again I want everything to be very soft.

Now for a very, very subtle highlight on the inside corners, which just makes your eyes

look a little bit wider apart, most people have eyes that are kind of too close together,

so we want them to look like they're wider apart.

I'm just gonna use this shade right here from the Luvia Prime Glow Palette and this tiny

shader brush, this is the 237 detail shader from Zoeva.

I'm just picking up a tiny bit of that and placing it on the inside corner of my eye.

Really just a little little bit to highlight.

You can pull it a little bit under but nothing too dramatic.

Now using Brown Script from MAC.

I'm just using that 217 from MAC again that I used before and I'm taking a little bit

of color and I'm just placing this in the outside corner of my eye.

I'm also pulling this a little bit underneath really just a tiny bit, just to give it more

of a cat eye and now with small circular motions, if you can tell, I'm just blending this a

little bit outwards and upwards and a little bit into the crease just to blend all of this

very very well.

When there inso color left on your brush, just blend everything together.

Now you can leave it at that or put a skin color kind of lighter than your skin color

kohl pencil into your waterline but I want it to be a little bit darker, so I'm using

this Kohl Kajal by MaxFactor in 030 Brown and I'm lining my upper and lower waterline

with this.

You wanna really go in between your lashes as well to really make your lashes appear

very, very full.

If you have glasses or very small eyes, then skip this step and use something lighter.

And for mascara I'm using the Benefit Roller Lash.

If you want a more subtle look just use brown mascara.

I'm gonna use black because I like that look and that is how simple a subtle eye look can

be to make your blue eyes pop.

So I hope you enjoyed this video, remember you don't have to use the exact products that

I used, just use something that is suitable for you and maybe that is kind of in the same

color range.

As I said, you just want to use something that is very orange based, so as to have that

complimentary color make the other colors stand out.

The key to make something subtle is to use the right colors and to make it very, very

blended and just not use something that is too dark.

when you have dry hairs and you comb your hairs in that case what happens

the body become charged body because of that we saw this phenomenon

so generally what you do

you decorate the walls by stick balloons on them right!

if some time the sellotape is finished then what you do in that case

then in that case you take cloth and rub baloon on that and stick that on the wall

it exactly happens

so this phenomenon is also due to charge

so all this phynominon is happens due to charge

so we have to know about it

for understanding this all

Interventional oncology allows patients

to have new options in their cancer treatment.

We use procedures like yttrium-90 radioembolization,

which is a big word which basically means

using radiation therapy that we give directly through

the arteries that are feeding the cancer in a certain

part of the body, usually the liver.

Giving the radiation therapy directly into

the tumor allows us to save normal

tissue in your liver and just direct

the therapy to the tumor.

This is a very effective way of treating

certain tumors that occur in the liver such as

liver cancer or tumors in the colon

which go to the liver.

We also do procedures where we put chemotherapy

directly into the tumor as well.

You can get chemotherapy through your IV line,

but it is also very helpful to have that

chemotherapy directly in the tumor and also to

stop the blood supply to the tumor itself.

That is called transarterial chemoembolization

or TACE for short.

We also do procedures where we put in little probes

into the tumor directly from your skin

and burn the tumor.

Sometimes actually we burn it, sometimes we freeze it,

and sometimes we microwave it.

In the past, these patients had to undergo

extensive surgical procedures.

But now, it is an outpatient procedure just performed...

You come into the hospital, you have the procedure done,

and for the most part you can go home the same day.

And the complication rate is very low

compared to having an open procedure.
