Spotify launches all-new design (but it's only for free users) SPOTIFY • LASTLY CREATIVE • UNSPLASH. Spotify has announced a dramatic redesign of its music streaming service. The all-new smartphone app, which allows users to access to millions of songs, loosens some of the listening restrictions on the free, ad-supported tier.
Spotify remains one of the few music streaming services that offers a completely free, ad-supported subscription plan. The Stockholm-based company places a number of restrictions on these accounts to try to tempt users to pay for Spotify Premium, which starts from £9.99 a month. Before the latest update, Spotify free users were only able to listen to shuffled songs, rather than pick a specific track. However, ad-supported users will now be able to personalise their own playlists.
The music services vice president of product development, Babar Zafar said: Our customers always tell us that music discovery and listening is a personal experience, and we are enhancing the free experience with this in mind. This is the beginning of an evolution for Spotify and we will continue to make improvements that mirror our customers needs.
This is not only about giving users a more customised free experience from the day they sign up, but giving them more control over their listening experience so they can easily find and stream their favourites anytime, from anywhere. Spotify has dramatically refreshed the user interface of its smartphone application, which is available on iOS and Android.
One of the biggest changes is around cover art, which now displays more prominently in the Now Playing interface. Playlists now contain a list of artists contained inside, just beneath the cover art. Spotify has dropped the Browse button from the navigation bar at the bottom of the app, with this feature now folded into the Search tab.
The new free app now includes a Premium button to the right, prompting users to upgrade. Spotifys updates come amid increasing pressure in the streaming market from Apple Music. The technology giants subscription service has gathered more than 38 million paying users since launching in 2015. Spotify remains out in front with 71 million paying subscribers and 90 million free users, but the rapid growth of the competition has sparked a response. The update is the first mobile revamp since the app was launched in 2014 and will be released to all Spotify free users in the coming weeks the company said.
It also sees the introduction of a playlist creation tool to free users for the first time. Spotify will use artificial intelligence to suggest songs to add to the list as users build their library. The firm also revealed a new Data Saver feature which, once activated, optimises the app to stream music using less mobile data. Additional Reporting By Martyn Landi.
