ENG/THAI SUB Monsta X 2nd Win VLive Thank You For Jealousy 1st Win - Duration: 10:22.
Did it start? Did it not start?
Did it start?
Okay!
Let's say hello!
- 2, 3! - Hello, we are MONSTA X!
- First, if I can tell you from what I experienced today... - Yes.
We were first place candidates, right?
Next to me, I.M was like,
"I think it's going to be us."
So... we stood in the front,
and I felt kind of embarrassed, because it might not be us.
From that point onward, my entire body started to get nervous.
I got so nervous that I even thought I could get body aches later because of it.
Even when I clap now, my hands hurt.
- That can happen. - But I.M predicted right.
- I had a good feeling. - I was wrong
Today just... felt kind of strange.
- And last week? - I had no feelings last week.
I wasn't nervous at all before the announcements.
But when they started announcing it,
my heart started beating really fast. I have no idea why.
I wasn't at all nervous right before.
For me, it was our third week of promotions and we were the candidates for "THE SHOW."
I wondered if this was possible. I thought, "Probably not," but it happened.
- Really... - It's because they voted so hard.
- We got full voting points! - Right, if we had 100 points less,
- it would have been really dangerous. - Dangerous.
- We might not have gotten first. - It would have been a sad situation. - Right.
MONBEBE all became one
and voted for us, which is why we were able to get full points.
- The fortunate thing was that last week,... Jooheon mentioned it earlier. - Yes.
- They cried in front. - They cried a lot.
- Right. - But everyone was smiling today!
I'm sure it was because they were sad that we didn't get first place
or that MONSTA X looked so good. It could have been a variety of reasons,
but since we won today... There could've been people who cried today too,
but they cried out of happiness, so I'm just so thankful about that.
- You're the best. - But I think today, we didn't have to like hold back our tears.
because MONBEBE loves us so much to the nano unit.
They even love our moles.
- Even if we have a pimple, - They think it's cute. - Not sure if there are people like that...
Either way, we...
But really...
How should I say this?
After it was announced and we looked at MONBEBE,...
But like, winning first place is like... That happiness.... It's a weird feeling.
- I thought of this then. - It's really weird.
When we went abroad,
the videos of when we won first on "THE SHOW..."
- Yeah. - They suddenly edited it and...
- And they... - A present. - Right.
They suddenly played it for us during the concert.
Even on Wonho's birthday, they played it on the screen behind us.
I was reminded of that a lot, after it was announced today.
- Now if we release an album for MONBEBE, we get first place! - I know, right?
Our MONBEBE are the fans of a first place winner!
Everyone cried during "DRAMARAMA" promotions,
and none of us could say anything.
- It's a relief we did our thank you speech. - It's so fortunate.
I really held it in.
I was holding it and I spoke again into the mic...
and that's when my tears started to pool up to the top.
- I cried after the camera turned off. - I thought I was going crazy.
All the MONBEBE in front did the same.
They were all holding their tears and saying "I love you~"
- and they smiled again and then were about to cry again. - So cute.
I guess they had a wide range of emotions.
When you get first place, articles and photos go up.
Last time, I came out looking so much like a crybaby.
- I was like a huge crybaby. - It was really bad.
- You looked great. - To be blunt,
I didn't cry, because I really wanted to come out looking handsome.
It came up all the way here, but I smiled. I hope the photos came out well today.
- I was overwhelmed with emotions. - Yeah.
I was overwhelmed, but the moment I put Shownu on my back,
all my focus went on piggybacking him.
I saw some photos for a bit, and I noticed that I gave up on my face.
But Wonho was lighter than I thought.
- Yeah, I've gotten so thin. - Shownu is as heavy as you think.
I was so happy, but I didn't know how to express it.
But I still feel that way right now.
Everyone was giving piggyback rides, so I.M came and was like "Jump on! Jump on!"
I felt so awkward that I felt like I needed to piggyback Jooheon, but he was so heavy.
I was 78kg during "DRAMARAMA."
- And right now? - I think I'm around 70-69kg now.
You lost a lot of weight.
It's a heaven full of gratitude.
Should we each of us say something briefly?
One person at a time?
I said this on stage earlier,
but really, MONBEBE, thank you so, so much.
In the future as well, to all of you,
I have so much greed to share great music.
Thank you so much for allowing us to win first place after releasing our music.
Yes, I'll work hard for next time too.
MONBEBE, thank you so much. We got an award because of you!
Thanks to our MONBEBE, after the show was over,
we got to sing and dance.
- And you piggybacked Shownu. - I also gave him a piggyback.
It was so nice to be able to experience so many things.
I hope that we as well as MONBEBE can sleep happily tonight.
Thank you!
I was so happy on stage earlier,
but I didn't know how to express how happy I was,
so I couldn't even say my thank you speech.
I couldn't even talk properly in general.
I think the biggest thing was my feeling of gratitude.
Thank you so much.
But I don't want to give MONBEBE any kind of burden.
Let's just have a good time together. You know, right? I love you.
First, I always don't know how to express this gratitude.
We always work hard,
and MONBEBE always enjoy it and really like it.
I hope that we can continue for a long time like this.
Thank you so much for today's award.
- We'll become MONSTA X who gets better. - It was hard, right?
- You worked so hard! - You worked hard!
It really is nice though.
I have a throat cold right now.
- Minhyuk who laughed and cried. - I know.
If there's one thing that I felt from this...
I honestly don't need to get first place.
But after feeling that atmosphere and seeing the expressions on your faces,
I thought it would be nice to get first place for MONBEBE.
I really had no greed before this.
But because of you, I found that greed. Thank you.
I...
The members always say this,
but even when we're alone together or eating,...
No matter what we're doing, we always end with MONBEBE.
So... More than saying that I love you,
I'm always thinking about MONBEBE.
Hold on... let me think about this.
- You can't organize your thoughts? - Yeah.
- It happens when you have lots of thoughts. - MONBEBE means much more than "I love you."
- Right. I "MONBEBE" you. - MONBEBE, like this.
I "MONBEBE" you. Like this.
MONBEBE also always does MONSTA X.
- I hope that we can do this forever. - Until we're old and white-haired.
And last time during "DRAMARAMA," we got first place thanks to MONBEBE.
When we did the comeback interview, I told everyone that I had confidence,
but I got so burdened by that in all honesty.
It really did burden me.
Because I told too many people that I was confident.
But MONBEBE picked up what I blurted out
and took responsibility for it, so thank you so much.
Really if we lacked 100 points... Because you gave us full points with the text voting...
It really is 100 points. I mean, it's worth 10,000 points.
But "having confidence" didn't mean that.
- We had confidence with our stage! - That we had confidence in ourselves!
I was saying that I have confidence to get first place.
- I said that in the interview. - I can't shied you.
- Please say thank you. - You have to say that a lot. - Thank you.
Thank you to MONBEBE who took care of what I spit out.
Really, MONBEBE, I love you. Thank you.
- Thank you. - Is that it? - I said it.
- Shownu. - Until the day we win first place next!
This has been MONSTA X! Thank you!
It felt like we were doing some kind of variety show.
- Thank you! - Until the day we get first place!

MAKEUP FOR GREEN/HAZEL EYES- CLIENT TUTORIAL! | Beauty Banter - Duration: 7:46.
But the summer is gone
So I'm starting out with the Urban Decay
infusing vitamin spray
Thingamajigger just to prep her skin
Catherine has really dry skin, so I'm starting off with a moisturizer. This is the embryo lease
Moisturizer and I love this one because it's super gentle on pretty much any skin type and doesn't usually cause any irritation
And it's also really really hydrating so then I'm jumping right into the eyes
And I'm taking a just basically some neutral brown shades to create a little bit of background shadow
I just find that this helps the other shadows blend and have a nicer gradient and a more overall natural look
next I'm grabbing the lid shade which we decided on as like a kind of a
Topi shimmery color and I have to say a little tip for you guys if you have not used
these foam applicators you can get them at all so you are totally missing out they apply eyeshadow, so well and so pigmented and
You save your brushes some wear and tear
I really really like those little things so after doing that I'm taking a dark purple shade and
Basically just a fluffy tapered blending brush
And I'm just working that on the outer corner of the eye
And through the crease
And I'm just going in and out and building it
Slowly because you don't want any you don't want to go overboard and then have to take it off because that's a huge pain
It's way better
Just to build it up slowly a little bit at a time until your client is happy with the end result so again
I'm just focusing through the crease and kind of that outer V outer corner area
So next I'm taking nylon by Mac which is my favorite inner corner highlight?
It's like a very metallic eye catching color and a little pencil brush, and I'm just buffing that in the tear duct
Going back in with a little bit more of the purple
Just a tiny bit and just kind of continuing to blend it through the crease in the outer corner to make everything is super soft
How cute is she look at her smile love it all right now. I'm taking a gel eyeliner
This is the dose of colors one
I recently reviewed it if you guys want to know more about it
and
I'm just basically creating a line just along the lashes so that the
Lash band that we use can be concealed and also just add a little bit more definition to her eyes
Find it pulls everything together really well
This is a purple eyeliner
We really wanted to enhance the green in her eyes so I ran a little bit of purple along her waterline
And now I'm just measuring the lash and off-camera
I popped the lash on I do the other eye, and we are back with the skin
so how I like to do skin is I like to take a flat foundation brush and apply it and as I apply it I
like to blend so I like to apply and
Blend apply and blend in that way the product doesn't sit on the skin for too long
And it doesn't dry because if that happens
It's a lot more difficult to blend and you end up just putting way too much pressure on your clients face
And it's uncomfortable for them, so I like doing it that way, and I also feel like it creates some really nice coverage
so I'm gonna grab the RCM a
Pallet there, and I just use kind of a blend of some different colors to conceal her under eyes
Then I'm grabbing the RCM a no color powder just a little bit on this Kat Von D
Brush and I always start from the outside of the eye in it just makes a huge difference
I don't know. Why but it settles into fine lines so much less, and I just love that technique to
Set Catherine's makeup
I'm taking the fit me powder by Maybelline which I absolutely love and my still damp Real Techniques
Sponge and just pressing the powder all over her face
Next I'm taking a little bit of the dark purple the map and a pencil brush again
And I'm just creating a little bit of shadow under her eyes nothing crazy
You know she wanted this to be really wearable and she wanted to feel comfortable as well
So we just added a tiny bit of shade under there to pull the whole look together
All right
So I'm going
Back in with a little more of that nylon color and just pulling it right underneath so the whole tear duct area is
Fully highlighted. I just think this brings so much light to the eye, and it's really flattering on pretty much
Everybody it creates a little bit more dimension brightens everything up
So now I'm using a mascara. This is her mascara. She owns this she brought it
just because I feel like it's
So much better to use the wand that actually comes with the mascara instead of the disposable ones obviously
I do, but when the client has their mascara
I prefer to use that next I'm taking the Mac give me Sun bronzer
which has become my favorite bronzer to use not only on myself, but on clients cuz it's basically like a
Universally flattering shade for kind of light to medium skin tones
And it's got just the right amount of like really really really subtle shimmer
It's mostly matte, but it's got this quality about it that just makes the skin look so healthy and natural
It's not like too orange. Just now too grey. It's just the perfect
Bronzer color for everybody I've used it on. I don't know I just love it
I'm gonna grab a combination of colors from the morphe blush palette and just
Tap that onto the cheekbones and sweep it back towards the hairline. I'm using a real techniques brush same brush
I use for the bronzer. I really love this brush for blush and bronzer
Next I'm grabbing the Omri Zee highlighter. It's my absolute
Favorite highlighter to use again. Not only on myself, but on clients as well because it's so so flattering it just conceals any sort of
Texture, but it highlights, and it has this like almost wet glow to it, and it's just so gorgeous
So I'm just using an elf fan brush, and I like using a fan brush for this step
Just because you have a lot of
Control of how much product you apply and you can build and build as you go to your desired
Amount whereas a more dense brush you're going to get more payoff right off the bat
And you have a little bit less control to finish off
I'm using eight NYX lip pencil, and she actually said she really liked bow and arrow by Kat Von D
and I happened to have that shade so that's what we used on her so just lining her lips applying bow and arrow and
Then we are all finished
I did end up setting her skin with the pixie glow mess because again her skin is super super dry so I really wanted to
Infuse even more moisture and life into her skin so that she didn't have any
Cakiness or anything like that with her makeup, but after we set her face. She is totally done
It was such a pleasure doing her makeup. She's so sweet and such a brave girl for coming and letting me
Film her on my youtube channel
I really hope you guys liked this
client tutorial if you want to see more cloud tutorials
Definitely give this video a thumbs up comment below all that good stuff so that I know that you
Love to see them as much as I love to do them. Thanks again so much for watching, and I'll see you next video. Bye

Tarot Reading by Alejandro Jodorowsky for Christian K- subtitles in english - Duration: 14:39.
Dear
Christian Klose,
I'm going to read you this Tarot
in exchange
for the contribution
that you gave us
for Endless Poetry.
Sorry for this delay.
It was very hard to finish that movie.
We fought until we made it.
Here I am.
You asked me a…
Depp question:
"What is the best
I should do?"
"What is the best I should do?"
I remember that one time in México
when I had been searching
desperately where
where an authentic Zen master
who came from Japan in mysterious circumstances lived.
The psychoanalyst professors
who were disciples of…
Of a great…
Master,
a psychologist master,
had installed this Japanese man
in a little temple
on the outskirts of Mexico.
I paid a great amount of money
to these doctors of Erich
Fromm
to see the…
… That master, so that he could tell me
what was the best I should do.
The best of what? The best I should do with my life.
What was the best I should do?
And I went to meet him.
He had given me an appointment at 6 in the morning.
I got there.
It was a little house in…
In a sort of… Of former garbage
dump: little hills in the outskirts
of Mexico.
And someone opened the door.
I don't know… I don't know
how old he was:
was he young, was he old?
His head was shaved. You couldn't tell!
He was smiling as if he knew me his whole life,
and he barely spoke English.
He took my hand immediately
and brought me to his little meditation room,
where there was a sort
of poster, of poster,
with a Japanese character,
and he told me
a word in Japanese, which was what was written,
and then he translated and told me:
"hap-pi-ness."
That's it.
And with that he had explained
the whole
Zen work, which is about
living happily
Then if you ask me "what is the best I should do?"
I have to answer you what I discovered:
you should live happy.
That's the best. And then, in order to live happy,
and as you are asking:"what should I do?"
It means that you don't live happily!
I have to tell you with the Tarot
what keeps you from living happily.
When he told me "happiness",
I realized
(at the time I was… A little…
About 28 years old)
that I wasn't living happily.
He told me "happiness" and:
"well, I'm going to find happiness,
whatever it takes."
And happiness is doing
what I love
with whom I love,
being who I am,
and not who others want me
to be.
I started from there:
only mixing with people who brighten my life.
(Mixing is for making friends.)
With people who don't brighten my life,
seeing what I could do for them
without catching
their negativity.
Things like that, you see?
Then
let's see the cards you chose.
I shuffle them well
so that you can see that there's no trick here.
That's it.
The first one
is number 3, number 6:
1, 2, 3,
4, 5, 6.
The second one
is number 13:
7, 8, 9, 10,
11, 12, 13.
And the third one
is number 18:
14, 15, 16, 17 and 18.
Well it's very organized!
You are like a child because
you go up: 6,
13,
18. You see?
Number 6 in Tarot is the lover;
number 13
is called death, but it's the arcane with no name, the change;
and number 18
is the Moon.
Then
you are
in the lover… Well, let's see. I'll tell you afterwards.
If it's not here, I will tell you.
The first you get
is the magician,
the second you get
is the Sun,
the third you get
is the chariot.
Now I'm going to pull out the cards…
The numbers that correspond to the ones you said.
This one
is the lover,
this one
is the arcane 13,
and the Moon hid.
Here is the Moon. And the Moon.
You see?
Look closely.
The numbers you gave me:
here there's a man between two women.
Death is not… It's a "her"…
That's how it's called. It's feminine
because it's a "her".
Well.
And the Moon
is… It's a completely feminine world,
the one where you are in.
And here,
in what actually counts,
the…
Magician,
is starting, he's…
He's a conjurer,
he's looking for an audience,
he's looking for company, for friendship. He's a man.
And here is
the opposite of what you asked for: here's the Sun.
It's a friendship
under the masculine wisdom of the Sun,
of the father.
Here it's the world of the father.
Down here is the world of the Moon,
the world of the mother, you see?
Well,
then the world of the father.
And then
you get
the chariot,
where… Where
the character of the enriched
magician,
enriched by friendship,
discovers himself,
he discovers who he is as a man.
He undertakes
the conquest of the world,
he undertakes… Of his world.
To conquer one's own world, right?
Then that's what you have to do,
you see?
Here.
It's what Tarot is saying.
It's what you have to do.
But in order to do that,
I mean in the world…
It's, as I said, a masculine world,
right?
Well,
in order to do that,
first of all,
you have to see how you mother
interferes
in your emotional relationships,
and how,
in order to reach happiness
and to eliminate what is keeping you from being happy,
it's to break off with
the concept of the couple,
to break off with such a strong concept of the family-couple,
to break off with the Sun and the Moon, you're thinking here,
to break off with them, but mainly to break off
the relationship
with your mother,
who totally meddles in your whole life
and in your formation.
It's what Tarot says,
I do it like this because…
Because
I don't know who you are,
I don't know how old you are.
How old are you? You are
39… 39 years old,
right?
So you are coming
to a key moment when you leave that long adolescence you had behind
to reach maturity.
And then you have to break off with that education,
or that relationship
which is mainly maternal!
And with a missing father! A father who…
Who can... Who can teach you.
What was happening to me when the story of the Zen master took place:
I was looking for a father who could teach me what happiness was.
Being a man,
that was my happiness, because one is a man or a woman, what else?
Corporally…
To be a man is to be oneself when one is a man,
and to be a woman is to be oneself
when one is a woman.
And besides you see who you're attracted to and who you're not,
that's sexual discovery stuff,
without limitations.
But here we are talking about the essence…
The essence.
The world is in yang and in ying.
The world is
active, it's receptive,
it's a man, it's a woman.
It's a world of…
Of complementary contrasts.
Complementary.
Then
by liberating yourself from…
From the maternal environment,
you get in the Sun, in the paternal environment that you needed so much,
didn't you?
The magician recognizes himself
and has the power of the magic wand,
which is active.
It's this magic wand here.
And he's going to use his… His sexuality
to create a situation
that fits him.
And he has a lot to choose,
a lot of things that he hasn't lived
or experienced yet.
Then he has to extend himself,
and it's in society that he has to extend himself,
outside himself,
in a partner
who understands him.
And inside him
he has to unite
his essential being
and his ego,
meaning
to develop his self-esteem
without narcissism,
his self-understanding,
to treat himself with affection,
not to live like…
Like if…
If he was doing the worst,
and not the best.
In life…
What's the best I can do in this life?
It's to live!
There's no bad or good.
When it's bad, it's good.
If I'm doing the activities that fit me,
it's bad;
if I'm doing the activities that don't fit me…
If I'm doing the activities that fit me,
it's good;
if I'm doing the activities that don't fit me,
it's bad.
If my ambitions
are
bigger
than what I earn,
I'm poor;
if my ambitions are smaller than what I earn,
I'm rich.
So you have to live without ambitions!
And you're rich.
It's… To live yourself!
To live yourself
and to undertake
the conquest of your world peacefully,
without that critical eye
that tells you:
"that's bad, that's good",
changing that for: "that's authentic
and that's illusory."
That's where we are, you see?
That's where we are.
That's what Tarot tells you,
that's what I did: I left everything behind
for art,
but an art that wasn't understood in Mexico, at the time.
And I fought
against the whole country, because they criticized me,
they threatened me,
they made fun of me,
and in the end they wanted me,
because I kept going, I kept
looking for the happiness of being authentic:
not selling oneself,
not allowing to be bought,
following the line
of authenticity.
What is the best you should do?
My dear friend
Christian Klose,
"Klose" is like "closed".
Open up
Be authentic.
Thank you very much for having collaborated with us.

Ryan Van Praet - Resources For Cardiac Patients - Health Yourself Guide - Duration: 1:23.
I mean there's a lot of great resources out there like this one but
it's how do you access that and and that's, again it I like to think that
nothing falls on one particular person right so in terms of as me being
healthcare professional or are you putting out this content it's about how
do you make it easily accessible to somebody and that they know that it is
vetted trusted resource and it's not just somebody writing this random
article on on how to rehab for heart care. Enlisting-- enlisting you know the
help of your spouse or a family to to help you but with that being very
careful to to not letting them be your case manager so to speak and take over
for you because I've seen people post cardiac event obviously very frightened
and very they want to freeze right they did they don't they know they should go
out and do things but they don't want to and so their spouse who is extremely
frightened for them goes out and gather it's all this information and then plops
it down and says you need to go do a B and C. That doesn't work
because you're only going to be motivated to do it if you see value in it

Cohen's office were "completely unprecedented," and called for a 'special master' to review
the seized materials to determine if any are protected by attorney-client privilege.
"To the extent it bears repeating, federal prosecutors have seized the data and files
of the personal attorney of the President of the United States.
This is completely unprecedented," they said in a court filing to Manhattan federal
court.
They said federal investigators "took everything."
"This is perhaps the most highly publicized search warrant in the history of recent American
criminal jurisprudence.
It is paramount that the review of Mr. Cohen's data and documents be handled in such a way
as to eliminate, as much as possible, even the 'appearance of unfairness,'" the
court filing said.
It added that the seizure was "an operation disquieting to lawyers, clients, citizens,
and commentators alike."
Every American should be startled about the raid.
No matter which side of the aisle you are on, the Fourth Amendment has clearly been
breached.
This means that your client/attorney privilege can easily be revoked.
If the President of the United States cannot be protected against this type of coercion,
who else would be protected?
Not to mention, clergy confidentially, physician confidentially and even a spouse not testifying
against one another.
How will THAT be protected going into the future if attorney/client confidentially cannot
be safeguarded?
Cornell Law states the following: "The Fourth Amendment originally enforced the notion that
"each man's home is his castle", secure from unreasonable searches and seizures of
property by the government.
It protects against arbitrary arrests, and is the basis of the law regarding search warrants,
stop-and-frisk, safety inspections, wiretaps, and other forms of surveillance, as well as
being central to many other criminal law topics and to privacy law."
In ending, do you believe the Mueller team crossed the line of the Constitution and breached
the 4th Amendment?

how to connect with people,
and it just, it helps you nurture and
teach artists; it's incredible.
I love NYU.
Eddy Moretti: It changed who I am fundamentally.
It made me a more critical,
a more analytical person.
Alec Baldwin: When I went to acting school here,
it really, really was a great, immersive,
very immersive in terms of literature.
We studied, we read a lot of books,
we read a lot of plays,
and it was a great experience. Fantastic.
Hilaria Baldwin: And then we found each other,
not at school.
Alec: But very close to school.
Hilaria: Very close, in the neighborhood.
Alec: There was a magnetic field;
I was coming from a school event, actually.
I was with Brendan at the short film festival
for the NYU film school,
and found you, so in a funny way,
NYU put me on that course that led me to

Norman Bier - Improving Learning for Five Decades (Excerpt) - Duration: 8:34.
(audience applauding)
- Doctor Bier has spent his career
at the intersection of learning and technology,
working to expand access to,
and improve the quality of education.
He's currently the executive director
of the Simon Initiative,
and the director of the Open Learning Initiative, or OLI,
at Carnegie Mellon University, or CMU.
Named for Nobel Laureate, Herb Simon,
the Simon Initiative works to interconnect, accelerate
and disseminate CMU's unique learning, research
and educational technology ecosystem.
Key to this initiative, is an approach that Simon dubbed
"Learning Engineering",
the use of learning research and affordances of technology
to design and deliver innovative, instrumented,
educational practices with demonstrated
and measurable outcomes.
Wow.
I'm really looking forward to listening to about that.
OLI, a recognized leader in open education,
combines leading research in the learning sciences
with state-of-the-art technology
to create scientifically based courses
that facilitate understanding for independent learners,
and supports instructors to improve effectiveness
in traditional classrooms.
By rigorously capturing and evaluating learner data,
OLI delivers powerful feedback loops
that assist learners and educators, improve courses,
and contribute to the larger understanding
of how humans learn.
Prior to joining OLI,
he was a director of training and development
at iCarnegie, Inc., a university subsidiary chartered
to deliver CMU-designed software development education
through international partner institutions.
His teaching experience includes both philosophy
and computer science courses at institutions ranging
from the Community College of Allegheny County
to Carnegie Mellon University.
He is a recognized leader in open education
and educational technology, and, in fact,
in 2015, he was honored by the
Center for Digital Education as one of their
Top 30 Technologists, Transformers and Trailblazers.
Once again, here's ...
You got to say it.
(audience mumbling)
Doctor Bier.
(audience applauding)
- First, just getting this out of the way,
I am pro-technology,
I think that we can do great things with it.
I'm assuming that's a comfortable position
at this conference.
I'm not going to stand up here and promise you
some rapid transformation or silver bullet.
I think that anybody that does, you should
invite to leave the stage.
If they own edtech company and promise
that they're going to disrupt higher education,
you should throw them off the stage.
(audience laughing)
So, those are, sort of, our ground rules.
Core message, as we walk out of the room,
whatever else you get from this talk,
I hope that you recognize that we
in not-for-profit higher education
are in an exceptional position
to leverage the work that's going on
in innovation and learning science
and to use it to simultaneously improve outcomes
in our classroom, but also to advance our understanding
of how human beings learn.
And I think that being successful in this space
is going to require a number of things
that we in higher ed are not traditionally good at.
We're not actually great at collaboration,
we're not great at new business models
and we've been getting better at open approaches
but we need to learn how to do better at all of it.
If nothing else, you're going to hear me repeat
this phrase a few times during the talk
and if you get nothing else from my talk,
science is incremental.
Alright, so the beginning of this,
I told you I was the executive director
of the Simon Initiative.
As you've heard, this is named for Herb Simon.
Who knows who Herb Simon is?
Who's Herb Simon?
- [Audience Member] He is a public administrator
that focused on organizational behavior.
- Organizational behavior.
This is really where he did the bulk of his work
and so Doctor Simon was a Carnegie Mellon professor.
He was also maybe best known for winning
a Nobel Prize in Economics,
which he got by trying
to understand organizational behavior
and he decided that,
to understand organizational behavior,
he needed to model human intelligence
and so he spent some time with Allen Newell,
inventing modern field of artificial intelligence,
got to the end of that run,
decided that he really needed to better understand
how human cognition worked
if he was going to model human intelligence,
so he then went on to found what we currently think of
as "cognitive science" as a field.
Man was busy, it's a little bit humbling
to lead an initiative named for him
but he's relevant in this case
because at the end of his career,
he began to spend a lot more of his time
and attention, thinking about
how to improve learning.
His own sense was that we have done
as much as we are going to do
in terms of improvement
if learning and teaching are going to consist
of one person standing up here, talking at you.
And instead, his argument was that,
to make advances, we need to begin
to treat the improvement of learning
as a research discipline in its own right
and as a research discipline that belongs
to every faculty member.
One that we need to treat with the same rigor
and the same respect as research in our own domains.
And, so this is the challenge that he threw out
to his colleagues at CMU,
to build this research community
that really took as its mission,
the advancement of learning
and our understanding of learning.
50 years ago, Herb Simon proposed what he called
a learning engineering approach.
And his notion of learning engineering
is that we begin with these models
and use them as a way to integrate what's happening
in the learning sciences and what's happening
in ongoing research, with new and innovative practice.
So we're able to use the best of what we know
from the sciences to design both our models
and our practice,
instrument those practices,
whether those are something new in the classroom
or something new online
and use that data to fundamentally improve
what's happening inside of our practice.
One key piece of this is an approach
that we've been talking about
as "Learning design as hypothesis."
That, at any point when we're developing
our learning environments,
when we drill down into smaller sets of learning activities
we're going to take what we know from good design
and good instructional engineering
but we're also going to recognize
that what we are making is a hypothesis,
that a student that engages in these activities
is going to achieve certain outcomes
and then we're closing the loop,
we're taking the data and saying
alright, how good was our hypothesis?
What do we need to do to adjust
either the materials or our initial goals?
I'll come back to this and talk about it in a bit.
We also are religious about data,
that this ability to embed assessment
into our learning environment
gives us this ability to drive powerful feedback loops.
Some of this is giving feedback to the learner,
targeted feedback on their mistakes,
hints when they need them,
but equally useful and interesting is the ability
to give feedback to our instructors.
This is just one example of that,
so this is a learning dashboard,
the tool that was developed as part
of the larger Simon Initiative by Marsha Lovett.
The notion here is that sitting underneath every OLI course
we have a cognitive model representing what the students
are trying to achieve and tying it
to the activities in the course.
As learners interact with these activities,
we've got a model that is making predictions
on how well they're mastering the material.
So, students in the gray have not done enough
for us to make a prediction,
red, we think they're still struggling,
yellow, they've almost got it
and green end up being folks who are almost there, right?
Or, ideally are there, rather.
Folks in the green should be able to pass an assessment
at the end of the course.
Big picture on this, the Simon Initiative
offers opportunities to engage
in a learning engineering approach.
We are taking all of the stuff that we have
and we're trying to push it out
into the open as the foundation for a larger community
of learning engineering.
There are opportunities to engage with this work
whether you're an individual faculty member
or whether you are a system representing the
State of North Carolina.
We think that some piece of this is technological,
some piece of it is social
but we also recognize that supporting this work
is going to require new ways of thinking
about sustaining it.
So, hopefully, you can think about this
as an open invitation to join in this work
whether this is at a higher level conversation
about how we can imagine new financial models,
whether this is in engaging in the research
and uploading your own data,
this is simply taking advantage
of some of the stuff that's on OLI
and adding your own work to it.
In the end we have an opportunity, I think,
as not-for-profit higher education that is fairly unique,
to collaborate in this way
and it's something that I'm hoping we find new ways
to take advantage of.
