Many of you have asked me what public health is.
Here's a good example:
Imagine three friends walking in the woods.
They see a river and notice there are people drowning.
Near the end, there is a waterfall.
One of the friends decide to jump in and save people who are most at risk of falling down the waterfall.
The other friend runs to an area away from the waterfall and makes a raft to bring people to safety.
They look to find the third friend running in the opposite direction of the flowing river.
That friend ran up there to find the cause of the problem and stop it to prevent more people from drowning.
Using that example to compare to the real world,
the friend that ran to save people near the waterfall are the ER doctors and first responders.
They're there to help in case of emergencies or for medical treatment.
The second friend that made the raft are your primary care providers and nurses.
They manage your ongoing conditions, give you annual checkups, and make sure your vaccinations are up to date.
The third friend that went upstream are public health professionals,
who are responsible to find the root cause and stop it, and to prevent health issues from increasing.
50% of health issues or diseases are preventable.
Public health is the practice of preventing disease and promoting good health for people.
Research and policy is critical for public health.
With research, we can find the cause, which region and population groups
are most impacted, and develop intervention strategies.
In the future, we use research to review the intervention strategies, see if it's worked,
and make adjustments for improvement.
Policy is critical and has a huge impact on the health of our population.
For example, ADA laws require communication access for deaf people in healthcare.
A healthy public means people will get sick less frequently and spend less money on healthcare.
This means better economic productivity and an improved quality of life for everyone.
Public health is very important.
Stay healthy!
