What are the conditions under which it's okay to take a life,

when we've been told never to take a life? And interestingly enough, as in the

zombie apocalypse, often those conditions involve protecting the innocent and

preserving life. The hard thing about all of these decisions though, is that

there's a moral cost that comes with them. One of the books on the rush to war

in Iraq called The Dark Side written by an American journalist, the author

interviewed a CIA operative who had been involved with what we would now describe

as very aggressive interrogation. And this CIA interrogator said "Once you have

done something like that, once you've gone to the dark side", and this

interrogator used the words 'the dark side', "you can't come back from it. You're

not the same person". And if you're a person who watches The Walking Dead, for

example, you've seen the way that the character of Rick has changed, season by

season by season, into somebody who now is much more pragmatic about the use of

violence. And of course we could say he keeps his people alive and indeed he

does, but if we're asking ethical questions, we also have to ask this

question that the zombie apocalypse helps us ask so well: what is the human

cost of that? What is the soul cost of that? And what are the circumstances

under which it's no longer worthwhile to go on living? And that's why I love the

zombie apocalypse stories because they let us ask all of these questions that

are so pertinent to our lives now.

In order to get the attention we want from a special person, or to finally get hired

for our dream job, we persist and find creative ways to get what we want.

It's almost as if, in our minds, "giving up" meant total failure.

But is this really true?

Sometimes giving up is the best thing that we can do in order to maintain our quality

of life.

Whenever we insist too much on something that clearly isn't going to happen, or when we

refuse to accept no as answer, we aren't being courageous.

We are promoting an uncomfortable environment for all who are involved.

No one likes being forced to do something, and when we refuse to give up on uncomfortable

situations, we create an oppressive living environment, both for us, and for the people

around us.

We need to learn to take "no" as an answer from life.

Regardless of how much it might hurt, or feel like it's the end of your dream, sometimes

you have to give up in order to move forwards.

Whether it's a no from a special person or the loss of a once in a lifetime opportunity,

the important thing to remember is that you need to learn from your experiences and not

try to enslave yourself in order to recover something that wasn't ever yours to begin

with.

We should respect others' freedom, even when we don't agree with it.

Other people like for their individuality to be preserved, just like you do.

Every one in the world loves their freedom.

Can you imagine how hard it must feel to be pressured all the time?

Feeling scared to leave your house, scared to visit social media, scared to talk to other

people...

If you don't learn how to give up, other people may feel apprehensive towards you.

Unfortunately, you cause people to feel uncomfortable, and the worst part is that you might not even

notice, if you are too preoccupied.

You only notice when people start pulling away from you.

Due to this, it's important to find balance between our natural courage and a healthy

amount of giving up in order to live a full life.

Remember, when you are surrounded by good people with good thoughts, good things happen,

even if it's not exactly like you imagined.

That isn't always bad.

Sometimes what we want seems interesting, but won't satisfy our expectations.

So, if you realize that you've already exhausted all of your options, do yourself a favor:

GIVE UP and be happy.
