Health Secretary Tom Price Resigns After Drawing Ire for Chartered Flights - Duration: 14:09.Health Secretary Tom Price Resigns After Drawing Ire for Chartered Flights
WASHINGTON — Tom Price, the health and human services secretary, resigned under pressure on Friday after racking up at least $400,000 in travel bills for chartered flights and undermining President Trump's promise to drain the swamp of a corrupt and entitled capital.
Already in trouble with Mr Trump for months of unsuccessful efforts to repeal and replace President Barack Obama's health care program, Mr Price failed to defuse the president's anger by offering regret and a partial reimbursement.
His departure was the latest from an administration buffeted by turbulence at the top, and capped a week of setbacks for the president.
"I'm not happy, O.K.?" Mr Trump told reporters who asked about Mr Price as the president prepared to leave for his New Jersey golf club for the weekend, barely an hour before the resignation was announced.
"I can tell you, I'm not happy." He called Mr Price "a very good man" but added that the secretary's offer to pay back the government for just part of the cost of the private flights "would be unacceptable." Mr Price ran afoul of one of the president's most consequential campaign pledges.
While some of Mr Trump's advisers privately make light of his vow to drain the swamp of Washington privilege, to many of his voters, it was a threshold promise.
The firestorm over Mr Price came as the president was already on the defensive with his base, as the incumbent mainstream Republican senator he backed in an Alabama primary race lost to an insurgent channeling Mr Trump's election movement.
"It's hard to see how a cabinet secretary can drain the swamp from 42,000 feet in the plush interior of a taxpayer-funded Gulfstream 4," said Laura Ingraham, a conservative talk show host and Trump supporter who, like others, defied the president by backing Roy Moore, the insurgent Senate candidate who won in Alabama.
Mr Trump berated Mr Price in the Oval Office on Friday afternoon for about two hours before heading out to meet with reporters, according to people informed about the meeting.
All cabinet travel requests now must be cleared by the White House, they said.
The White House's announcement of Mr Price's departure was sparse, with none of the customary thanks for his service; it said simply that he had "offered his resignation earlier today and the president accepted." In his resignation letter to Mr Trump, Mr Price said: "I have spent 40 years both as a doctor and public servant putting people first.
I regret that the recent events have created a distraction from these important objectives. Success on these issues is more important than any one person.
In order for you to move forward without further disruption, I am officially tendering my resignation." Mr Trump tapped Don J.
Wright, a deputy assistant secretary for health and the director of the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, to serve as acting secretary.
Possible candidates for a successor include Seema Verma, the administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, and Scott Gottlieb, the commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration.
Document Read the Resignation Letter Tom Price Sent to President Trump Tom Price sent a letter on Friday to President Trump resigning as health secretary.
Mr Price had been under pressure after racking up at least $400,000 in travel bills, footed by the taxpayers, for chartered flights.
OPEN Document Mr Price's job was on the line since the first of a string of reports by Politico, on Sept. 19, about his extensive use of chartered aircraft. The president has fumed privately and publicly about Mr Price's actions.
Hoping to assuage Mr Trump, the secretary offered on Thursday to reimburse the government $51,887 — which he said represented the cost of his seat on the trips — of the at least $400,000 spent.
But it was not enough to save his job. Mr Price, a physician and a former Republican congressman from Georgia who had long opposed Mr Obama's Affordable Care Act, served as a point man on Mr Trump's drive to scrap the law.
In July, Mr Trump said he would fire Mr Price if he did not get the votes for the legislation. "He better get them," Mr Trump told an audience with Mr Price at his side.
"Otherwise, I'll say, 'Tom, you're fired.'" He said it in a jocular fashion, and his audience took it as a jest, but in fact the president has been privately simmering about Mr Price over the unsuccessful efforts to pass health care legislation in the Senate.
While a bill passed the House, the latest effort collapsed this week when enough Senate Republicans defected to deprive Mr Trump of a majority. Mr Price had been under fire from the start.
During his confirmation hearing in January, Senate Democrats pressed him on the more than $100,000 in pharmaceutical and medical stocks he owned. Democrats said that Mr Price had understated the value of his 400,613 shares in an Australian company, Innate Immunotherapeutics.
He defended himself, saying, "Everything that I did was ethical, above board, legal and transparent." In just eight months since taking office, Mr Trump has fired or lost a chief of staff, a chief strategist, a national security adviser, a press secretary, two communications directors, a deputy chief of staff, a deputy national security adviser, the F.B.I.
director and numerous other aides and advisers. Mr Price may not be the only senior official to face anger over travel bills.
In recent days, a slew of reports about the fast-lane habits of the cabinet have resulted in a mounting public relations headache for the Trump administration, which is stocked by billionaires accustomed to using private jets.
Ryan Zinke, the interior secretary, used a chartered airplane for several flights, including a $12,000 trip to deliver a speech celebrating a new professional hockey team in Las Vegas.
Scott Pruitt, the administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency, has spent more than $58,000 on chartered and military flights, and David Shulkin, the veterans affairs secretary, took his wife on a 10-day trip to Europe that mixed business meetings and sightseeing, according to The Washington Post.
Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin asked about using a $25,000-an-hour military plane for his European honeymoon and later used a government jet to fly to Fort Knox in Kentucky in August, a trip that offered him a clear view of a solar eclipse, although he later disclaimed any interest.
Other cabinet members issued statements explaining their travel practices.
The Small Business Administration said its chief, Linda McMahon, had used private air services and that "on the rare occasion" she had, she "covered the entire cost out of her own pocket." Betsy DeVos, the education secretary, travels on personally owned aircraft "at zero cost to U.S.
taxpayers" because she "neither seeks, nor accepts, any reimbursement," the department said. The sensitivity about the situation within the cabinet was clear on Friday when Mr Zinke delivered an energy policy address to the Heritage Foundation.
He opened his speech by lashing out at what he called "a little B.S." on chartered flights. "I fly coach," he said, adding that he uses chartered or military flights only when necessary.
"Every time I travel, I submit the travel plans to the ethics department," he added.
"I will always be honest and up front about my travel." Current and former West Wing officials said oversight of Mr Trump's cabinet was so lax in the past that Stephen K.
Bannon, then the president's chief strategist, requested meetings once every 60 days to review each member's agenda and travel itinerary. The secretaries did not flag the questionable flights, the officials said.
Kelly, the White House chief of staff who has tried to impose a military discipline on a chaotic West Wing with mixed success, has ordered the president's budget director, Mick Mulvaney, to revamp the review process for flights and set limits on prices that cabinet members can pay for transportation, according to two people briefed on the plans.
At a recent meeting with legislative affairs aides for cabinet agencies, Marc Short, the White House legislative affairs director, warned that they should be prepared for additional reports on cabinet secretaries' expenses, according to a person who attended.
Mr Short said that agencies should assume everything will be made public eventually — and urged the aides to come clean with the president's staff first.
Additionally, Rick Dearborn, a deputy White House chief of staff tasked with overseeing the cabinet, has been in the president's cross hairs, according to an aide familiar with the situation.
Mr Dearborn accompanied Mr Trump on his visit to Alabama last week to support Senator Luther Strange, who lost to Mr Moore in the state's Republican primary.
On the flight back to Washington, the president lashed out at Mr Dearborn and White House political director Bill Stepien because he was left supporting a candidate who seemed likely to lose, said the aide who was not authorized to be named.
Two people on the plane insisted the president never chastised his aides. Another adviser said Mr Dearborn and Mr Stepien had both cautioned against the trip, but caught Mr Trump's wrath once it went badly. Critics were unmollified by Mr Price's departure.
"While his resignation ends his time in the government, it does not end the private jet scandal that others in the Trump administration, including Mnuchin, Pruitt and Zinke, find themselves in," Noah Bookbinder, the executive director of Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, a progressive watchdog group, said in a statement.
"This administration," he added, "seems to believe that the government and the taxpayers serve them rather than the other way around." Representative Joseph Crowley of New York, the chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, said the episode demonstrated a lack of judgment in the administration.
"President Trump talked a big game about draining the swamp, yet he continues to surround himself with staff and administration officials who behave as though a separate set of rules apply to them," he said.
"That must end." Correction: September 29, 2017 An earlier version of this article referred incorrectly to the events leading up to Secretary Price's resignation. It was President Trump, not former President Barack Obama, who threatened to fire Mr Price. .

This isn't the world's smallest champagne bottle.
It's an old-fashioned match safe.
Years ago, when people didn't have lighters, they used to carry around matches.
This tiny little bit of silver is a match safe, meant to keep those precious bits of
wood dry.
You rotate the bottom and it opens.
You could shake out your match, and then you could strike it
on the back.
This one is probably made between 1910 and 1920.
This one is a different kind of match safe.
It's silver, marked Winchester Wharf - in England - and July 1923.
Probably a souvenir or a gift that someone brought back from a trip.
It's a simple flip top operation.
There are markings on the inside.
Those marks mean that its from England, and they symbolize what town it was made in, that
it is sterling silver, and what year.
I love British and Irish silver.
The markings here read: "Morton's Patent" and "The Maze".
This is the striker portion on the champagne bottle.
Here is a close up of the markings.
The anchor stands for Birmingham, and the lion mark for sterling silver.

Agnetha for Dummies: Part 1 - Duration: 8:41.What do you think the future's going to be like?
To be honest, I'm...
Sometimes I'm a bit scared.
Because
There's so much things, happening
All around the word (world?)
The thought of what will come,
Of this word (world?)
In the future
We don't know, none of us
What will come; for example, 1989.

Frida: Choose me!
The dream was to become this singer I wanted to become and I had idols back then.
Agnetha: Connie Francis...
Petula Clark...

Sylvie Vartan
Rita Pavone...
I could go on and on!
(Who's Sorry Now by Connie Francis)
(Downtown by Petula Clark)

(Datemi un martello by Rita Pavone)
That was almost about the only thing I did - to play the gramophone and sit and mime to these songs.
She dreamt of fascinating people on a national level
So, she sent a sample of her singing...

Skavlan: Most people know you as a vocalist.
But you are a very good and respected songwriter.
You were a songwriter with your own career before ABBA.
Yes. I used to be more productive back then.

Agnetha Fältskog had a partner named Dieter Zimmerman, who wanted to make her a big schlager star, but they broke up in coincidence to her first proper encounter with Björn Ulvaeus.
Björn Ulvaeus: The guys in the band (The Hootenanny Singers) swear that I fell in love, but
Just by hearing her voice.
Interviewer: Is that true?
Björn Ulvaeus: Yes, I think so!
There was something, you know, so incredibly attractive.
MA, MA, MA, MA MA MA MA!
(Om tårar vore guld by Agnetha Fältskog)
(Mitt sommarland by Agnetha Fältskog)
Note: Björn Ulvaeus wrote the text to this song. Agnetha wrote the music.
(Swedish interpretation of I Don't Know How To Love Him from Jesus Christ Superstar)
Ulvaeus persuaded Fältskog to audition as Maria Magdalena... and so, she got the part. Titti Sjöblom would soon replace her, as the ABBA connection was beginning to form on Fältskog's song "Dröm är dröm, och saga saga"
(Dröm är dröm, och saga saga by Agnetha Fältskog)
Anni-Frid "Frida" Lyngstad and Benny Andersson joined in at the studio and then the same was done for Frida with "Min egen stad".
(Min egen stad by Anni-Frid Lyngstad) Note: Agnetha's backing vocals are prominent in the selected clip of the song.
(People Need Love by ABBA) Note: The official birth of the legendary Swedish group. It was a minor hit in the USA, but was a big hit in their home country.
(Waterloo by ABBA) Note: The actual song that jumpstarted their international career!
As Sweden was first place in the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest, it took them a while to achieve international fame.
The Eurovision victory would soon make a future path for ABBA where screaming fans are a norm for the band, years later. As Agnetha was already a mother, she fears and questions her decision to become a full-time parent or keep on singing.
Trivia: Olivia Newton-John was part of the Eurovision Song Contest in 1974 and lost to ABBA. That didn't stop her from being famous.
Agnetha Fältskog: It was very very scary!
I didn't expect us to win.
(SOS by ABBA, actual live recording in Eskilstuna in 1975)
Because ABBA's music was topping the charts elsewhere in Europe and Oceania (aka MUSICAL PROFIT), they made a nationwide tour within the Scandinavian region and Western Europe region back in 1975...

(SOS, Swedish version)
It's not easy to stand on the stage.
Outside with so many people
And just say
WE CAN DO IT
(Dom här glomt by Agnetha Fältskog)

And requires a lot of discipline, at least in my case.

LED Portrait Lighting with Savage Edge Lit Pro LED Light for Studio and Location Stills and Video - Duration: 12:20.How do you make an LED lighting panel that is much bigger than a strobe, yet super thin
and it has really even light across the front panel… you light it from the edge. That's
want Savage Universal did with these awesome Edge Lit Pro LED Lights. Stay tuned while
I put them to the test in the studio and on location - be right back!
Hey gang! My name is Joe Edelman and my mission is to help photographers like YOU to develop
a solid understanding of the HOWS & WHYS behind great photography so that you can achieve
your goals as a photographer.
The folks at Savage decided to take a different approach to LED lighting and instead of building
a panel with a few hundred LED bulbs facing forward… which means you have a few hundred
point light sources facing forward - they created a panel with LED bulbs that shine
inward from the outer edges of the light and are then redirected through a soft white panel.
This gives you a very even, very soft light. Essentially a small softbox.
The Edge Lit Pro is 12" x 9". And it's super thin. Just 1.5" without batteries
and 2.5" with them. And yes that means that it works on AC power or you can power it with
two Sony batteries which are very common with video gear. It will run for 75 minutes at
full power with fully charged batteries.
This is a bi-color light that is blendable from 3200k to 5500k which makes it very easy
to use these lights mixed in with other ambient light. They have a CRI of 95 which we learned
in this video…. is really good and they have an output of 1,677 Lumens at three feet
which makes it more powerful and a little bigger than some of the units that are getting
big buzz right now. Independent lab tests measure the Edge Lit Pro at an even higher
1,784 lumens when used at 5500k - which is daylight balance.
The Edge Lit Pro emits almost no heat and it's completely silent which makes it great
for video work. It has an all metal design that weighs just 3.5 lbs. The big LCD readout
display makes it easy to see your power level, color temperature and channel information
from a distance. Each Edge Lit Pro ships with a multi-channel remote that can control your
lights individually or in groups just like you do with a radio transmitter for your strobes
I really like these lights. As you have heard me say many times before - they are not going
to be for everyone. There is no such thing as a light that is perfect for every situation.
Why you may ask? Because light is a photographer's best friend. Remember that the word "photography"
was created from Greek roots meaning to "draw with light". So good photographers are always
looking for unique and interesting ways to generate, manipulate, modify and manage light.
The folks at Savage Universal were kind enough to send me four of these units so that I could
really put them to the test and I decided to take it a step further and use them both
in the studio and on location.
I started in the studio with a quick portrait session. In this first setup I used all four
panels - I mean why not? It wouldn't be nice to let one of them get lonely in the
case all by itself while the others are out having fun. Please fellow TOGS - show some
compassion for your gear.
You can see here I have the lovely Monae in front of a Savage Universal #24 Orange Seamless
Paper backdrop.
I have one Edge Lit Pro panel placed on camera left as my main light and it is set at 80%
power and 5500k color temperature. My fill light on camera right is set at 40% power
also at 5500k. Behind my subject is a panel on the floor thai is aimed up at the backdrop.
This one is set at 65% power and 4300k to throw a little more warm light on that orange
and then to camera left I have the last panel also set at 65% and 4300k as a warm rim light.
Please observe that my main light is set above my models eyes and carefully aimed down towards
her face. The fill on camera right is lower but still above her eyes - I want to have
shadows naturally below the nose and jaw - not above.
5500k is considered daylight balance by most equipment manufacturers. You will find temperatures
from 5000k to 6500k referenced as daylight. Basically the way it works - the higher the
number - the whiter the light.
The lower end of the scale at 3200k is like a good old fashioned incandescent light bulb.
This feature is beneficial for adding warmth to things like you saw me do in the last headshot
or for being able to balance your lights to a room where the ambient light is generated
by incandescent or halogen lamps.
Here is a three quarter length shot that I did with Monae and essentially the same lighting
set-up as the portrait. The noticeable difference is that you can see I have turned the panels
sideways so that the light spread will cover more vertical height. My settings on the lights
and camera were the same as they were for the portrait.
Next up I went with a #20 Black seamless from Savage and a three light setup.
I have my key or main light in the same position on camera left. I've taken the panel on camera
right and moved it behind my subject to serve as a rim light. I also removed the background
light from behind her and I am still using the rim light on camera left.
Just to break down this lighting concept for you… You can see that with my main light
on camera left - I have a shadow on the camera right side of Lola's face. By adding that
rim light on camera right - I am able to add some depth to my lighting which makes the
shot more interesting. If I dial the color balance of the Edge Lit Panel down to 3300k
I get a much warmer rim light. If you are using strobes - you can do this with an orange
or better yet amber colored gel. Then if you have a third light - you can add a rim on
the other side which will help separate your subject from the background even more.
One very important tip… always pay close attention to the brightness of your rim lights.
This applies for both flash and LED lighting. Rim lights that are blown out and overexposed
just look sloppy and distracting. This is a perfect scenario where having a handheld
light meter can save you a lot of time and guesswork.
Before we go outside, here is a quick series I shot with a young Instagram blogger that
I am working with. I shot these on a Savage #8 Primary Red seamless. I used four lights
- two on each side on my subject, one above for a hair light and the fourth low and on
the ground for a background light. This very simple balanced arrangement gives me a nice
clean commercial look.
In this last one, I simply removed the panel on camera right and shot with a three panel
set-up for this version which has more shadow and depth than the others.
Remember - there is no right or wrong here, but understand that light placement and intensity
doesn't just impact shadows and exposure - it helps to set the mood and tone of your
shot.
For my location setup I found a small piece of roadway that's not being used because
it's under construction and took the Edge Lit Pro's and my model Monae out for a short
90 minute mosquito challenged session as the sun went down.
In case you haven't watched my Smartphone series of videos, I use the app called Sun
Surveyor to plan in advance and know exactly when and where the sun will set. I have a
link to the blog article and apps in the description below.
I actually prefer shooting with natural light outdoors, but it if you want to be one of
the cool kids, it seems that you need to gear up and get outside.
So for my first shot, I am still about 30 minutes away from sunset. The sun is starting
to fall below the trees, and the sky is in that phase where it is very bright and almost
white close to the horizon. Here is what I get with no additional lighting or reflectors
- a very soft and natural look.
Now if I go with the same three light setup that I used with the black background in the
studio - main light on camera left - fill light on camera right and rim light on camera
right rear - this is the look that I get. You can see that I have placed my lights at
about the same distance from Monae as I had them placed in the studio.
A little tip - good light placement is no different outdoors than it is indoors. I see
so many new or young photographers practice lighting in a studio and then go outside and
forget everything they learned about light placement. Keep it simple stupid. If you are
learning how to light - take the lighting arrangements that you do inside - outside
and start there. That way you begin by learning how to balance the ambient light with your
strobes or LED lights instead of overwhelming yourself with too many variables.
Just like in the studio - I have my lights placed high to mimic natural lighting and
I have my main or key light placed where my model is looking so that I am not creating
harsh shadows.
As the sun continued to set - I moved to the middle of the road and went for something
a bit more dramatic. So now I am shooting full length with just two lights. My main
light is on camera left and placed well above my model and I have a second panel as a rim
light on camera right. I left the panels in the horizontal position so that I would get
some light fall-off towards the bottom of the frame and you will notice in each of these
last shots, I have Monae's face turned towards my main light so that I don't have harsh
shadows on her face. You can also see that as the sun is getting much lower, color is
starting to return to the sky near the horizon.
Just after the sun has fallen below the horizon is when the sky is going to really start to
pick up the rich colors and with my Edge Lit Pro panels in exactly the same positions,
I was able to create this shot and then this shot.
If you are one of those ZOMBIEtographers who follows the crowd - you might want to skip
ahead to the next part of the video. For the rest of you… let me point out that there
are lots of ways to have your subject brighter than the background that don't require extra
expensive gear that has high speed sync. I have just shown you one of them. In case you
missed it - how did I do it? Planning and patience. Two things that don't cost anything.
I just had to plan ahead for a time where the ambient outdoor light would be dimmer
than the power of my Edge Lit Pro's. It really wasn't that hard.
So indeed if you are that photographer that is determined to find one light that is going
to do everything you will ever need…. LED lights are not going to overpower the sun
at high noon. But like I said earlier, If I am shooting outdoors, I would rather shoot
with natural light. Check out this video that I did a few years ago. It shows examples of
how to find nice light without strobes or reflectors outdoors at midday.
The Edge Lit Pro LED light can be purchased as a single unit and it comes with the AC
power cord, two Sony batteries and two chargers. Also included is the rotating light stand
adapter, a multi-channel remote control and a padded carry bag
Savage also sells the Edge Lit Pro as a lighting kit that comes with two Edge Lit Pros, two
rotating light stand adapters, two power cords, four batteries, four chargers, one multi-channel
remote control, two Savage 7′ easy-open Drop Stands™ and a padded rolling case.
I mentioned the 7' easy-open Drop Stands™… these stands are awesome. The auto-extending
and collapsing legs with air cushioning allow for quick and easy repositioning of your lighting
without having to bend over and lock and unlock the legs. They also have a 1/4 20-3/8 reversible
spigot stud that can be mounted vertically or horizontally, which makes the stand very
versatile.
So if you are looking for a great light that is long lasting - I'm talking 20,000 hours
of use with the installed bulbs and eco friendly and super easy to use - I would encourage
you to check out these Edge Lit Pro's from Savage. I am definitely adding them to my
lighting arsenal.
Next up in the LED lighting series I am going to take a look at four different LED lights
from Smith Victor. From their COOL LED series I will test out the 25 watt, 50 watt and 100
watt models - that's comparable to a 1000watt incandescent light and I am also going to
use the Smith Victor 19" Bi-Color LED Ring Light and I will show you that ring lights
are not just for circle catchlights and making YouTube videos
Until then, I hope you found this useful. Please hit that thumbs up and subscribe so
that you don't miss any videos and until next time go pick up that camera and shoot
something because your BEST shot - it's your NEXT shot, so keep learning, keep thinking,
keep shooting.

Spain braces for violent fallout over 'illegal' independence vote - Duration: 3:55.Spain braces for violent fallout over 'illegal' independence vote
A potentially violent showdown looms in Spain on Sunday, where tens of thousands of Catalans intend to carry out an independence referendum deemed unconstitutional by the country's courts.
Hundreds of independence supporters slept overnight on Friday and Saturday in some 160 schools that are designated polling places, vowing to keep them open for voters.
But local police planned to remove them on Sunday — by force if necessary, Spanish government sources told Reuters. Catalan officials have said polls will open at 9 a.m. The Madrid government has ordered separatists to vacate the schools by 6 a.m.
And while both sides were urging non-violence on Saturday, thousands of national police billeted in two ships off Barcelona were ready to halt voting.
"We trust that citizens understand and will follow those instructions" to leave school polling stations, said Enric Millo, the region's top Spanish government official.
Carles Puigdemont, the pro-separatist president of the wealthy region in northeast Spain, is undaunted. Catalonia has a right to decide its own future, he told separatists.
"Friends," he said, "so that victory is definite, on Sunday let's dress up in referendum [clothes] and leave home prepared to change history. A referendum poster is seen plastered to a wall in Barcelona, Spain.
He called on the European Union to step in and help mediate talks between Madrid and Barcelona. For weeks, Catalonia and the rest of Spain have played a cat-and-mouse game over the referendum.
Spanish officials have shut down Web sites telling Catalans where to vote.
Catalans responded by launching an application on Google that gives potential voters polling locations and instructions. Spanish officials then won a court order forcing Google to delete the app, The Wall Street Journal said.
Early Saturday, the Catalan regional government's telecommunications and information center was raided by officers. The raid set out to stop the use of vote-counting software necessary to Sunday's election, Joan Maria Pique, Catalonia's spokesman, told CNN.
"It's one more sign of the unreasonableness on the part of the state trying to repress," a different Catalan spokesman said, according to the Journal. He added that the referendum is " unstoppable.
If a vote is still held, it will likely be steeply in favor of independence, since Catalans who are opposed to succession from Spain have vowed to boycott the referendum.
Spanish unionists note that Catalonia, a region of 7. 5 million, has a high degree of autonomy — as do other regions, like the Basque region in the country's northeast and the Galicia region in the west.
Hey, My name is Jeremy King.
As some of you already know, I'm a content creator and I'd like to share one of my
most recent projects with you called Big Shiny Tunes 20.
But first, many of you will probably appreciate a little bit of context.
So what what exactly is Big Shiny Tunes?
Well, for many people growing up in Canada in the 1990's, watching MuchMusic, "the
nation's music station," was their first exposure to popular mainstream rock music.
Starting in 1996, MuchMusic began releasing an annual compilation album called Big Shiny
Tunes.
Released before Christmas and extremely popular, these compilations provided a whole year's
worth of hit songs on one affordable CD.
Big Shiny Tunes became the best-selling album series in Canadian history, with 5 million
albums sold in ten years.
The best-selling album of the series was Big Shiny Tunes Two (2), which went Diamond, selling
over 1 Million copies.
On a personal level, Big Shiny Tunes was my first exposure to modern rock music.
I was 11 years old when my best friend, Jeff, brought over Big Shiny Tunes Two (2), it opened
the door to a larger auditory reality and my musical life was forever changed by it.
At the time of the 20th anniversary of the release of the first Big Shiny Tunes album,
I felt compelled, fueled by nostalgia, to create my own compilation album "Big Shiny
Tunes 20."
So this is my vision of what Big Shiny Tunes would look like today, if MuchMusic had continued
releasing albums, and if the station hadn't been bought out by Bell Media.
To create this album I carefully curated the chosen songs.
I did this through months of research, I listened to The Zone, Victoria BC's modern rock station,
for hours on end.
I made sure that the album complied with the CRTC regulations that were followed during
the Big Shiny Tunes era, which required a minimum percentage of Canadian content.
The order of the songs was also important to me in that I wanted to create a progression
that resulted in a sum total bigger than the individual parts.
I wanted to create an overarching narrative that personified MuchMusic.
At the end of this project, I created a mock commercial to advertise the fictional CD release
of this album.
Steve Anthony, one of the original MuchMusic Veejays and the voice of the original Big
Shiny Tunes commercials generously agreed to do the voice over of my commercial script.
Steve's voice added to the authenticity I was striving for in this project.
So stay tuned because up next is the commercial for the album followed by the album itself
in a traditional MuchMusic format.
I've even included some little easter eggs for those who check out the livestream of
the album.
Thank you so much for watching and I hope that you enjoy Big Shiny Tunes 20.

Ex-Husband Of Iowa Mom Who Left 4 Kids Home Alone Is 'Furious' She Ditched Them For Vacation - Duration: 4:10.Ex-Husband Of Iowa Mom Who Left 4 Kids Home Alone Is 'Furious' She Ditched Them For Vacation
Yikes! Matthew Macke revealed that hes livid at his ex-wife Erin Lee Macke for ditching her children to go on a vacation. During a fiery new interview, Matthew said that hes not surprised by her behavior.
Erin Lee Macke, 30, has been charged with four counts of child endangerment after leaving her precious four kids at home unsupervised on Sept. 20 to go on a lavish European vacation.
Now, her ex-husband, who is the father of her two youngest children, is speaking out about the controversy and he didnt hold back in a new interview.
I am really angry, but I wish I could say I am surprised, but I am not, Matthew Macke told Inside Edition.
In my eyes it was a clear, deliberate, intentional act." Erin reportedly tried, but failed to make arrangements for child care before leaving her little ones, ages 6, 7, and 12-year-old twins alone for eight days.
While on vacation, she took to social media to document her trip, sharing photos of herself in Germany and on the Danube River. See pics of celebrity mugshots over the years, right here.
"If she wants to take a vacation, more power to her," Matthew added.
"But she has a responsibility as a parent." A day after Erin left, Johnston police were called to conduct a welfare check, and they found her kids at home all by themselves. They reportedly sent the children to be with family members.
Luckily, Matthew claims the children are doing well after the whole ordeal, but its still not over for Erin after her arrest. Police called her while she was away and told her that she needed to get home, however she only cut her trip short four days.
She now faces four counts of child endangerment and one count of making a firearm available to a person under the age of 21, since cops found an unloaded handgun left on top of the dresser in the master bedroom.
The story has become a media firestorm, especially since many parents cant fathom making a similar decision.
Erin now faces a possible 10-year sentence for each child endangerment charge, along with a $10,000 fine. "I've never heard anything like this before," Lt. Tyler shared, according to WGN.
"We have situations where parents go next door or parents may go out for the night, and while that's not advisable either depending on the age of the children, obviously leaving the country is a totally different situation.
This, where a parent has left the country and left the kids home alone, I've never heard of it before." Thank goodness that all of her kids are in safe hands now!.

Katie Price insists Chris Hughes is lying about leaked flirty messages: 'The truth always... - Duration: 3:04.Katie Price insists Chris Hughes is lying about leaked flirty messages: 'The truth always comes out'
Katie Price has hit back at Chris Hughes and his claims that Katie had been inappropriately texting him late at night. The feud between the two reality stars has intensified with Katies declaration that the truth always comes out.
In a tweet responding to Chris and his alleged leaked messages from Katie, the former glamour model said: You think youre having fun & games then block me but just remember the truth always comes out….
Katie tweeted in response to claims Chris made that the star texted him flirty messages at weird times, once at 3. 30am while doing personal appearances at clubs in regional parts of the UK.
Chris then exposed Katies tweets by sharing the screenshots on social media and Katie is furiously claiming Chris has deleted the replies he sent. Chris appeared on Loose Women, which Katie sometimes hosts, to air his side of the argument.
'I think she's a bit upset,' Loose Women host Kaye Adams explained to Chris, before adding that the glamour model asked show hosts to quiz Chris when he appeared on the show.
Katie decided not to appear on the daytime programme with the Love Island star. Chris posted the revealing messages Katie sent after she tweeted: 'Sorry to disappoint you all no flirty texts got sent.
'She basically accused me of lying, but I had proof. It was in the heat of moment, and maybe it wasn't right thing to do, but I don't regret it,' Chris told the Loose Women panel.
He also said he found it odd since he is publicly going out with his Love Island girlfriend Olivia Attwood.
'Basically I'm one of them people…In my opinion those messages were flirty. She doesn't actually know me, and I have a girlfriend,' Chris went on.
Stacey Solomon was not so quick to believe him, and grilled the blue-eyed star about whether he'd deleted his own replies to appear more innocent. I wouldn't have done what I did if I'd responded,' he assured.

As the Red Devils sit second in the Premier League behind bitter rivals Man City, avid supporter Katrina Maria has been stripping off on Instagram.
And before todays game with Crysyal Palace she posted another busty photo of her shortly before kick off.
The babe has posted over 300 photos online including many of her in a Man Utd jersey and others of the 25-year-old completely naked.
Raised in the Faroe Islands before moving to Denmark three years ago Katrina has already gathered a following of over 20,000.
On her blog, she said: I support them, because in my opinion, it's without a doubt the best team in the world.
Simple as that.
Once a red, always a red.
I love their winning mentality, and the players loyalty and total devotion to the club, in any circumstances.
I have never and I will never support any other club.
Manchester United till I die..
Katrina boasts two tiger tattoos on her back because nothing gets in the way of the tiger due to its fearlessness and strength. She also claims she watches every game and loves to pose in the clubs jersey for her fans.
But she faces stiff competition as Old Traffords sexiest fan after former Miss Russia winner Victoria Lopyreva wowed the Old Trafford faithful at the start of the season.
She said: The club management invited me, apparently, after the good impression left following their visit to Rostov-on-Don when our city gave them a really hospitable welcome.
Now fans from all over the world invite me to attend their home games, they think I bring them luck.
Yesterday, Man United fans hugged me and begged me not to leave..

Kim Kardashian and Kanye West's surrogate spotted for the first time since pregnancy announcement - Duration: 2:20.Kim Kardashian and Kanye West's surrogate spotted for the first time since pregnancy announcement
Kim Kardashian and Kanye West's surrogate has been spotted for the first time since announcing they're expecting their third child.
The 36-year-old reality star made the announcement in a trailer for the next series of Keeping Up With The Kardashians, with a source previously stating how she'd found the 'perfect candidate' to be a surrogate.
Now Kim and Kanye's surrogate has been seen for the first time running errands in California, where she is quite visibly pregnant.
It was previously reported Kim's surrogate is an African-American woman in her 20s, who is married and has two sons of her own. It's also claimed she's being paid $45,000 for acting as surrogate for the power couple.
Kim and Kanye married in 2014; they have a son, Saint, and a four-year-old daughter called North.
Kim has always stated how she wanted a big family, with health complications meaning she's unable to have a third baby naturally; she suffered with placenta accreta, where the placenta grows into the muscle of the uterus, in past pregnancies.
Kim's younger sister Khloe and half-sister Kylie Jenner are also both reportedly pregnant.

9 Facts About Dating Japanese Girls - TIPS FOR GUYS - Duration: 9:30.Hey guys! Welcome back to Yaeko Smiles!
today, I have two friends as my guests
Cynthia from California and Hong Kong. International background.
Ami (yummy) from Japan
And I'm Yaeko. Yayyyy
today, we're gonna talk about
Cynthia: Except I'm not Japanese. haha
Today I found this article "9 facts about dating Japanese women" on the internet
They introduce 9 facts about dating Japanese girls
Now, we're gonna discuss whether or not these facts are true
and also I'm gonna ask Cynthia what she thinks about these facts.
yayyyy
Ami: No I don't. But I sometimes say what I really think.
Yaeko: Yea. Sometimes.
Cynthia: Usually you guys are
pretty reserved
But
Ummm you know
We want guys to understand or feel what we really mean.
But we won't directly say what we really mean.
We want you to get the message from us without actually saying it.
Yaeko: What about Western girls? Ami: How about Chinese? (American)
Cynthia: Chinese? Ami: California
California Girls!
So just from my personal stance, I'm much more forward.
like, I don't really like to play games, like mind games.
So I just way what's on my mind or what I feel.
Cynthia: I've never met anybody in a bar.
Ami: Me neither.
I feel like that applies to any country
even like here Vancouver.
Cynthia: I think ya it is true. Ami & Yaeko: Not healthy.
I mean it's not impossible. It's just says it's difficult.
Oh yeah. It is difficult.
It's difficult.
haha
So, when you say "no thanks"
or when you are being reserved
that just means like you're just shy Yaeko: just shy.
Cynthia: Right?
Yaeko: Just like
Yaeko: like umm.. I don't really mean "no thanks" but I'll be hesitant because if I say "I wanna go/do, the guy might think that I'm interested in him.
Do you agree?
Cynthia: like for me when I say "no thanks"
I really mean "no thanks".
I'm just like "I'm not interested in you.
like don't go wasting like our time
like your money, and all that
hahahaha
Wait so,
If you actually really said "no thanks"
would you actually...
Yaeko: We don't say "no thanks" directly.
we just say "oh...
if guys ask me like "oh do you wanna hang out with me?"
if I don't wanna hang out with him,
I just say "oh I'm sorry. This week I'm so busy. I can't."
Ami: Yea.
Cynthia: But you actually want to???
Yaeko: No!! I don't want to (hang out) but I don't wanna say "no". Because like...
Cynthia: You wanna be polite.
No but I'm saying the case of like
you actually like the guy,
and the guy actually asks you out on a date,
but you're like kinda shy.
So, you're like "Oh no thanks".
but do you actually want him to like
I don't really know!
Yaeko: If I like the guy, and he asks me out on a date, I won't say "no thanks". (I will say "yes".)
But maybe I won't text him and call him.
Ami: Please understand (guys)!!!!!
Yaeko: Yeah, I want you to know that I want to call/text you, but I don't wanna be the one calling you.
Cynthia: I do think people do date (South Asian Men)
like just for the person, who they are.
Yaeko: Especially university students.
I mean exchange students (studying in Japan) from other countries and a local student, or vice versa.
Ami: Hmm... South Asia guys
So, specifically
a foreigner (non-Japanese)
or a specific race
It's kinda like Yellow Fever but the exact opposite.
yea but in this case it's like the opposite
So like Asians (Japanese Women) only dating foreigners (non-Japanese guys), yeah like white guys.
Yes. I think that's kinda true in general.
Yaeko: But like I think.. Is it true though?
I feel like this can't just be
for a Japanese girl in general.
like because it's exactly same for guys.
like why are you showing me excessive interest?
like do you want something more form me?
like do you
is he feeling like entitled or something?
Yaeko: Yeah, entitled.
Cynthia: I don't know.
I think this is kind of a strange point to bring up.
Cynthia: So, like you just go along with anything.
you don't really have your opinion.
you don't say it.
or like you don't make decisions.
just kind of go with the flow.
you agree to things.
Ami: I think I'm this kind of girl.
Yaeko: Yeah, you seem like this kind of girl.
Ami: I don't state my opinions much after I start dating somebody.
Yaeko: But I guess
we want our boyfriends to lead us.
I think we are afraid of our boyfriends thinking that we are selfish if we state our opinions too much.
Cynthia: You think you might be selfish or self-centered
Yaeko: I think this
might be one of the reasons why Japanese girls are popular.
because we are like "I will follow you".
Cynthia: I think
It's a bad way of saying (the article)
that Japanese women, maybe just...
or East Asian women are obedient.
Yaeko: Ya ya ya ya
Cynthia: Like they won't to say "no" to you
Ami: In the past, I leaned about stereotypes of Japanese women that American people have. They have the stereotype that Japanese women are obedient.
Cynthia: Yeah. They won't say anything back to you.
Yaeko: We are perceived as women who would be like "I'm gonna follow you and obey you".
Cynthia: So, in this case, the green card is like American citizenship?
Yaeko: Yeah. It's like permanent residence.
Yaeko: Is it true????
Ami: I don't know.
Yaeko: Do I want Green Card? I don't really care haha
Ami: Me neither.
Cynthia: Yes It is totally possible.
Yaeko: Umm but I've heard many people say that inter-racial married couples get divorced easily.
Divorce rate is higher.
Cynthia: Eh?
Yaeko: Yeah. Inter-racial marriages between Japanese and non-Japanese. Ami: I didn't know that.
I think it's because of the difference in language, culture, etc...
But I think it is possible.
Yea. i mean, it is not impossible.
Cynthia: Yeah. It is possible, but there is like just
there are more problems.
Yaeko: we need effort.
Cynthia: need more effort.
It's very difficult BUT it is possible.
Yaeko: I believe it's possible!
we have to manage a good balance of give-and-take, we have to recognize what one should accept and say their opinion.
Do you know "Rachel and Jun" ? YouTubers.
Cynthia: I watch them quite often
Yaeko: Yeah they look so cute
Cynthia: They are really cute, and they seem to do pretty well. But i think also because Rachel and Jun both know English and Japanese.
Yaeko: Oh Yeah. That's an important thing.
Cynthia: Yeah. But it is definitely possible.
Just takes more effort. A lot of more effort
And a lot of more patience.
Yaeko: Especially for Japanese girls. They don't know what they want.
Sorry!
Cynthia: Is this because like you don't...
Yaeko: We don't normally ..
Cynthia: Like you don't ask yourself? You don't reflect? And you don't think about it?
or is it?
Yaeko: No, no just like we don't have the culture of saying directly like "I want this".
We are just like polite. We just wanna be polite.
I think people don't say what they want because if they do, people might think they are not polite and selfish.
anyway!
I want you guys who are interested in Japanese women to know
Japanese women are a little bit difficult to deal with.
But it's possible to date with Japanese girls.
It just like need more effort
need to give more attention,
need to be more patient,
need to give them love <3
... and ....
EFFORT
Cynthia: Would one of your tips be to ask them directly????
Yaeko: Ummm...Yeah
Cynthia: So yeah
just continue to be direct
try your best
to just understand that their culture in general
kinda teach us be more reserved
and not really speak their minds
So, I just need to have to dig a little deeper
try harder
Ami: It is important to be honest with your feelings.
Okay guys!

Wallabies v Springboks: Who starred and who flopped for Australia - Duration: 9:36.Wallabies v Springboks: Who starred and who flopped for Australia
Wallabies v Springboks: Who starred and who flopped for Australia. SKIPPER Michael Hooper produced a superb display as the Wallabies fought out a 27-all draw in the lung-busting high altitude of Bloemfontein.
The Wallabies clawed back deficits twice in the second half against South Africa to show resilience, steel in defence and their gains in fitness when most needed.
ISRAEL FOLAU: The try-machine has the new record for most Wallabies tries (11) in a season and there are still six Tests to play. Put his mark on the Test early when blazing over from a perfectly worked set play off a scrum.
It was an inside ball from Bernard Foley but the work inside by Will Genia and decoy Tevita Kuridrani was just as important. Healthy appetite (12 runs for 76m) as ever to run at the defence.
Couldn't hold a barging prop when he bumped through for a try and a bit of inadvertent hair-pulling when his grip slipped off the collar of winger Dillyn Leyds. Rating.
MARIKA KOROIBETE: This is why the ARU signed the former Melbourne Storm winger. He knows how to finish for a try and torpedoes for the tryline as if no one is going to stop him.
He's put a gap on challenger Henry Speight with this strong effort. Good finish for his first try in Test rugby off a Foley break and his second try was even better.
He hit a perfect Foley pass out wide and we do mean out wide. Stayed on the touchline to maximise his chances and crashed through halfback Ross Cronje to score it.
As importantly, he made three strong tackles in the opening six minutes.
His rugby naivety came through in desperate defence late in the Test when he was the player penalised for hands scooping the ball back in a tackle contest with three minutes left. Rating. 7.5.
TEVITA KURIDRANI: Solid defensively and it was needed. His eyes lit up when he thought "try-time" with 15 minutes to play.
Cronje cut him down 1m out and still feeling he could reach the chalk, he stretched with ball-in-arm. Unfortunately, he was too far away and the Boks earned a penalty for not releasing. Rating. 6.5.
KURTLEY BEALE: The inside centre would trade another man-of-the-match award for another win. He is a vital all-purpose figure for the Wallabies. He kicked well which was vital at high altitude and never stopped trying.
He made the superb, veering 40m break from the back field to give the Wallabies their best chance of splitting the 27-all stalemate with seven minutes to play and had the cool head to wait for support.
Midway through the Test, he saved a desperate situation with an intercept. The blemish was being bumped off on the touchline when South Africa were building up to the second try. Rating. 7.5.
Excellent defence with nine tackles. and his big boot proved a valuable element. Snaffled an intercept in desperate defence to save a try. Rating. 7.5.
BERNARD FOLEY: Outstanding game to mark his 50th Test and he was the playmaker that Elton Jantjies was not. He provided the assist for each of the Wallabies' three tries as a true general for the attack.
The inside ball for the Folau try was pinpoint, he slid through the defence to set up Koroibete for the second try and threw a fine wide ball for the winger's second dot-down.
A perfect five-from-five as goalkicker thankfully made up for two key kicks not finding touch, including the kick from a penalty that he struck too long when it flew dead in-goal. Rating.
WILL GENIA: Sharp, cool service with his pass. Never underrate how valuable that was because there were South African bodies flying everywhere.
Replacement Nick Phipps paused for a split-second at the ruckbase in the final seconds and his pass was rattled loose. Nice understanding with Foley for opening set play try. Rating.
SEAN McMAHON: Another non-stop display from the No.8. Double-digit tackles, stole a lineout and still had the legs pumping in support at the 73-minute mark.
Unfortunately, he lost the handle on the ball metres out when Springbok Jesse Kriel tackled him from behind in a trysaver. Rating.
MICHAEL HOOPER: Led from the front with his resilience, timing for big-moment plays and workrate. Swooped on a loose ball early to secure possession but his best play was from the final kick-off.
He nailed Jantjies with a jolting tackle, forced a turnover and gave the Wallabies a final chance in the closing seconds. Upwards of 15 tackles which was crucial when his team had just 39 per cent of the pill. Rating.
JACK DEMPSEY: Solid contributor without any standout moment. Didn't really grab a big ball-running moment with that wild-eyed menace that coach Michael Cheika suggested would come. Rating.
IZACK RODDA: This was a huge assignment for a 21-year-old lock with so little top-level experience but he stepped up. Willing physically and the ball came back the gold way on each of his four hit-ups.
The scrum was solid which is a tick for his work behind loosehead prop Scott Sio. He's in the big-time now. Rating.
ADAM COLEMAN: Decisive defence as always, ran the lineout effectively under big pressure and helped the Wallabies pack stand tall against the Boks. Rating. 6.5.
SEKOPE KEPU: The veteran prop was the anchor needed at scrum-time because the Boks never gained the edge there they might have hoped after a big scrum or two in Perth. Such a valuable worker and team member. Rating. 7.5.
TATAFU POLOTA-NAU: Efficient hooker's game. Marshalled the scrum for an hour and the lineout operated well but for one throw being picked off. Rating.
SCOTT SIO: Held firm in the scrums and his big turnover in a tackle at the hour-mark was just the momentum-staller needed against the Boks after they'd scored two second half tries. Rating.
REPLACEMENTS.
ROB SIMMONS: Played most of the second half when replacing Rodda. Plenty of accurate ruck work and energy. Knocked on at one restart when Foley had executed a perfect 10m kick. Rating.
NED HANIGAN: Busy effort for final 29 minutes as demanded. Off-side and penalised at the twisting late scrum when Genia swooped on Boks ball and plunged over. Rating.
LUKHAN TUI: Soaked up his Test debut with his eyes closed when belting out the full meaning of the national anthem pre-Test. Got on for the final 19 minutes.
Was alert with his ruck-edge positioning in defence and enjoyed his first carry and nifty offload in Test rugby. Rating. STEPHEN MOORE: Sharp 20-minute effort. Handling was spot on and was in support when the late Beale break was made. Rating.
Rating. TOM ROBERTSON: Scrums his main job. Rating. SAMU KEREVI: Played only the final five minutes. Rating. NICK PHIPPS: Only a few minutes at the end. Rating.

Good first 40 but a second spell to forget for New Zealand against Argentina - Duration: 5:20.Good first 40 but a second spell to forget for New Zealand against Argentina
Good first 40 but a second spell to forget for New Zealand against Argentina . Fullback Damian McKenzie dives over to score for the All Blacks against Argentina in Buenos Aires.
So are you in the All Blacks were okay or Argentina are rubbish camp? . To be honest it was hard not to have a foot in both, after New Zealands comfortable 36-10 victory at Estadio Jose Amalfitani on Sunday morning (NZT).
There was genuine uncertainty about how well the All Blacks might perform here in Buenos Aires and whether one or two individuals were on a bit of borrowed time.
Second five-eighth Sonny Bill Williams, prop Kane Hames and fullback Damian McKenzie were probably three who didnt come into this match with the unwavering admiration of the rugby public.
Joaquin Tuculet, left, disputes possession with Waisake Naholo.
But by the time Hames was being back-slapped off the park, as the All Blacks went in for halftime at 29-3 up, it was difficult to suggest the trio had been anything other than excellent.
They were hardly the only ones; just the blokes who probably displays of that significance most.
Williams had been poor since the win over Australia in Sydney. His hands had been bad and he just appeared off the pace and unable to impose himself.
He wasnt amazing in the first 40 minutes here; the team dont need him to be.
The All Blacks laid down a pretty fair challenge to the hosts. But he was accurate and played with a bit of menace and presence and the stability he provided allowed some of the flair players to show their wares.
McKenzie and first five-eighth Beauden Barrett were brilliant, at times, as tries to captain Kieran Read, McKenzie himself and wing Waisake Naholo saw the All Blacks quickly take Argentina out of the contest.
Again, you could quibble about the Pumas contribution and cite their inaccuracy and ill-discipline as reasons why the visitors made so much headway.
But Argentinas inadequacies shouldnt obscure what New Zealand did. It was a textbook demonstration of how to come to a potentially hostile environment, against a tricky opponent, and render them all inconsequential bystanders.
Captain Kieran Read opens the scoring for New Zealand at Estadio Jose Amalfitani.
Partly because the All Blacks scrum was proving so sturdy. The Pumas spent a period on New Zealands line right before halftime but eventually left empty-handed after not being able to combat Hames and co at scrum time.
The intervention of halftime doesnt always aid these occasions and the second spell quickly became a scrappy, ill-tempered affair.
Reads sinbinning, for a high shot, didnt help. Flanker Matt Todd had, unfairly, earned a 10-minute spell in the first half too, meaning the team ensured a significant period with only 14 players.
8 Juan Manuel Leguizman was ruled to have scored during Reads absence, allowing the slumbering 50,000-strong crowd the chance to get into things at last.
It was fleeting and the longer the half went, the worse the game got. Debutant David Havili coming on at fullback was one of the few moments of note.
Overall there was too much dropped, or lost, pill from New Zealand and a lot of referee Jaco Peypers whistle. Its hard when the games won so early, but the second 40 minutes really was a bit of a drag.
Having become All Black No. 1161, Havili lifted the gloom a little by diving in for the final try of the night. On to Cape Town, then, where New Zealand meet South Africa in a weeks time.
New Zealand 36 (Kieran Read 2, Damian McKenzie, Waisake Naholo, David Havili tries; Beauden Barrett pen, 4 con) Argentina 10 (Juan Manuel Leguizman try; Nicolas Sanchez pen, con).

First Game Theory Video - for my course "Learn from Game Theory and Anchoring!" - Duration: 7:49.Hello again! interdependence, cooperation and conflict are essential parts of
management and leadership. advice on the subject is cheap and plentiful and often
contradictory but are there any rational ways to analyze and resolve such
situations? Maybe not all of them but game theory can be very useful for many
of them. That cartoon is a perfect example of the type of conflict we deal with in game theory
Game theory officially came on the scene in 1944, with the
publication of the Neumann and Morgenstern classic - theory of games and
economic behavior - although John Nash is often considered the father of game
theory. It logically and mathematically analyzes and models interactions between
human beings, especially situations of conflict and cooperation. Players can
decide what strategy to use and, because of interdependence with other players,
each strategy has associated payoffs. some people gain and others lose.
There are several nuances and classifications to these games and we
won't go into all of these, but one broad category in which you can divide these
situations is zero sum and non zero sum games. Zero-sum games, as the name implies,
means that, for someone to win someone else has to lose, usually by the same
amount, so that the sum of wins and losses equals zero. Non zero sum games
don't have this rule. So they can be a mix of conflict and cooperation and the
sum of wins and losses is not zero. Another broad classification of games is
cooperative or non cooperative games. In cooperative games, players cooperate and have
joint strategies often with legally enforceable agreements. There is no such
cooperation or agreed-upon strategy in non-cooperative games.
Now let's look at some of these so-called "games". Dividing
a finite and homogenous resource among multiple people in a fair way, is an
important type of game. There are several strategies that have been researched
analyzed and modeled for this, and it gets quite complicated as the number of
people increase, but let's look at one such example in detail. Suppose a cake
has to be divided among two children so as to minimize quarrels and complaints.
How do we do that ? If one of the children divides it, there are likely to be
complaints about unjust divisions. Even if the division is actually quite fair,
the other child may perceive it to be biased. How do we do a fair division?
One elegant and fair strategy is the divide and choose method, if the product is
homogeneous and there are only two players. One person divides the cake into
two, and the other chooses the piece that he or she wants. The dividing person has
a great incentive to make the two pieces as equal as possible, and the choosing
person can choose any of the two pieces and so has no reason to complain. Both
are happy and this is an envy free division. So out of a potential conflict
here is a nice way for the two players to come up with a simple and
elegant solution.
Another common situation is a conflict for an asset or property, with two people
claiming different proportions of it. The example I am using here is a very
interesting one, it was used in the Babylonian Talmud which contains Jewish laws
and customs. No one figured it out for more than 2,000 years, until in 1980,
Professors Robert Alman Michael Maschler solved it. So suppose
there is a conflict over a piece of cloth, an heirloom maybe? Two women,
probably sisters, let's call them A and B. A claims that half the cloth is hers but
B claims that the entire cloth was left to her, and is therefore hers. How do you
resolve this? So A claims half the cloth is hers, so she is in agreement
that the OTHER half of the cloth is B's. B of course claims that the entire
cloth is hers. So both A and B agree that half the cloth belongs to B, right? Let's
call that the undisputed half. So B gets the undisputed half. Now the other half
is very much disputed. A claims it is hers and B also claims it as hers! So
what do we do with this disputed half of the cloth? Both claim it is theirs, so we
divide equally between them both. Between A and B so A gets 1/4 of the cloth and B
gets three-fourths of the cloth. Isn't that a nice solution?
The more traditional way to do the disputed cloth split is a proportional division.
Divide the cloth in proportion to the claim. A claims that half the cloth is hers, B
claims that the entire cloth is hers. So the proportion of their claims is half
is to 1, or 1 is to 2. If A gets 1/3 of the cloth and B gets 2/3 that will be in
the proportion 1 is to 2, in proportion to their claims. A fairly fair division.
Of course it gets more complicated for 3 or more players but the principle is the
same. These techniques are useful in a variety of situations in personal and
professional life. Dividing chores between spouses or siblings, for example.
One spouse can split the work into two more or less equal halves, and the other
spouse is free to choose the half that he or she wants. Fair division, no one can
complain. Similarly, dividing a piece of boring
administrative work between two members of a project team, or dividing a very
sought-after and crucial piece of project work; one divides and the other
chooses. Dividing assets or customers between business partners or companies
with conflicting claims, can use the proportional division method or the
disputed cloth division technique quite effectively. Divide in the ratio of the
claim amounts or use the disputed-undisputed method. The same holds for
dividing assets between divorcing spouses as well and for disputed
territories with multiple countries or states claiming conflicting ownership. In
the next video we will look at other games!
