Medical Marijuana, Cannabis for Fibromyalgia - Duration: 4:28.
Hey there, welcome to ask dr. Patel, where I answer your questions about medical marijuana.
I'm dr. Patel I specialize in the area of medical marijuana.
Which means that I step by step walk patients through how to safely use marijuana
for their particular medical conditions.
So let's get started with today's question, it comes from Julie of Palo Alto California
and here's what she writes,
Dr. Patel, I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia in my early fifties,
now in my late 50s I'm still in that same boat as when I was first diagnosed,
in just as much pain.
It's a constant aching paint over my entire body.
Then there are times when the pain from something as little as stumping a toe can last all day long.
I've tried exercising to help my pain but any amount of exercise wipes me out.
I'm sure the fact that I don't sleep well doesn't help either.
Even when I get 72 hours of sleep, I wake up feeling exhausted, sore and stiff.
Over the years I've probably tried every treatment that's out there for fibromyalgia.
On my own I've tried massage and an acupuncture.
I didn't get very far with that so I decided to go see my doctor.
He started me on a medication that's supposed to help with nerve pain.
That didn't cut it!
So he had me try an antidepressant.
We incrementally raised the dose of that and added a muscle relaxant to the cocktail,
eventually gave up on that option.
I went so far as trying an anti-seizure medication which I'm taking for the time being,
It barely helps but I don't seem to have very many options left at this point.
The pain and fatigue makes it difficult to enjoy the time I spend with my family.
Bearing through so much pain on a daily basis has really taken its toll on me.
Every now and then I find myself feeling really depressed.
But I'm so hopeful, I continue to search for a solution with the hope that one day I will truly enjoy
something as simple as a walk in the park with my kids and grandchildren.
In my search I've come across a few articles on Google about medical marijuana for fibromyalgia.
But part of me is skeptical and the other part of me is hesitant,
it's marijuana after all that we're talking about.
I'd like to know your thoughts on using medical marijuana for fibromyalgia symptoms, sincerely Julie.
Julie, first of all thank you so much for sharing your story with me.
You know what fibromyalgia is tough.
I have patients that come into my office that are beyond frustrated with their situation.
But I think you'll be encouraged by the information that I have to share with you.
So in 2011 a study was done on about 56 fibromyalgia patients.
Half of these patients had already been using marijuana
because none of the conventional medications worked for them.
The other half had never (used) before
and both, with both of these groups they have an answer, a survey of questions.
So they answered these questions both before and two hours after using marijuana.
Both groups reported an alleviation in their pain.
But not only that, they also reported that they saw a reduction in their morning stiffness,
they saw an improvement in their sleep, they saw a reduction in their levels of anxiety
and overall their mood just improved.
In my own practice I've seen very similar results.
In fact I've had patients tell me that for the first time they found a medication that's finally alleviated their pain.
And again beyond that, it's helped them with their conditions of anxiety and depression.
It's helped to improve their energy levels.
Which then, it makes for time spent with their family and friends were meaningful.
Now the best news is, is when they tell meone of two things.
Either that they significantly reduced the dose of the pharmaceutical medications that they were on.
Or they now need fewer pharmaceutical medications to help with their pain.
Now even better is when they tell me that they've completely come off
of all of the pharmaceutical drugs they were on
and they're only using marijuana to help manage their pain.
And they've been able to achieve these results without experiencing the high
that's typically associated with marijuana.
So Julie I hope this information helps you.
I hope it helps anybody else out there that's struggling with fibromyalgia.

LIVERPOOL are willing to smash their transfer record to sign Naby Keita. Kop boss Jurgen Klopp has identified the RB Leipzig star as the man he wants to build his midfield around next term.
Liverpool target Naby Keita has been a huge star for Leipzig in the Bundesliga.
Guinea star Naby Keita is the top target for Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp. But he faces a huge battle to persuade the moneybags German outfit to sell a player they value at £70million.
That fee would be double their current record — the £35m they paid Newcastle for Andy Carroll back in January 2011.
Liverpool have yet to make their move for the 22-year-old Guinea international but know they will have to pay a heavy price if they want him immediately.
Keita is believed to have a £48m release clause but that only kicks in next summer. Klopp is due back at Melwood for pre-season training next week and will be keen to see some progress made on his targets.
The Reds did sign ex-Chelsea winger Mohamed Salah, 25, from Roma for £34.
Naby Keita could surpass Andy Carroll as the record buy for Liverpool if he joins.
Egypt and former Chelsea flier Mohamed Salah has already joined Liverpool – for £34. 3million from Italians Roma last month.
Meanwhile, Salah and the Blues have been cleared of wrongdoing after the Court of Arbitration for Sport dismissed a complaint brought by Fiorentina. Salah joined the Italian side on loan in January 2015 for the rest of the season.
But Fiorentina alleged breach of contract when the Egpyt winger instead moved to Roma on loan for the 2015-16 season in a deal which later became permanent.
Fifa threw out the complaint in May 2016 and now CAS have released a statement, which read: "We have dismissed the appeal and Fiorentina's claim for compensation of €32m was rejected.
Liverpool target Virgil van Dijk is on his way back to full fitness after injury.
Jurgen Klopp must ponder how far to pursue his interest in Leipzig star Naby Keita.
