U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has opened up on the Trump administration's North
Korea policy.
He also said there's hope Washington and Beijing can work together to pressure Pyongyang to
give up its nuclear and missile ambitions.
Kim Hyo-sun has more on that.
In an interview with ABC on Sunday,...
U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said Washington wishes to see a denuclearized Korean
Peninsula,... but has no intention to force regime change in the North.
Tillerson said North Korea seems to have perfected its missile delivery system,... and this is
Washington's greatest concern.
"I think in terms of North Korea, we've been very clear that our objective is a de-nuclearized
Korean peninsula, we have no objective to change the regime in North Korea, that is
not our objective and so the whole reasons underlying the development of a nuclear program
in North Korea are simply not credible."
And in a separate interview with CBS,... Tillerson said China also sees North Korea as a threat,...
adding that presidents Trump and Xi shared that perspective during their recent summit
in Florida.
Emphasizing that there's hope the U.S. and China can cooperate,... he said the conditions
in the minds of the North Korean leadership can be changed.
Tillerson's comments come as one of Trump's security aides told Fox News on Sunday that
the president has asked officials to provide a full range of options when it comes to North
Korea's nuclear issue.
National Security Advisor General H.R. McMaster also described the stationing of the U.S.
Navy strike group near the Korean Peninsula as a prudent decision.
However,...
Russian lawmakers have reportedly expressed concern that Washington's latest move could
spark more unpredictable behavior by the regime.
Calling the deployment very inappropriate,... they warned that North Korea could carry out
unexpected provocations if it feels its security is at stake.
