The recovered Sewol-ho ferry is finally on dry land,... more than a week after arriving
at its final destination of Mokpo New Port... and almost three years since the deadly disaster
in 2014.
It's been a painstaking process due to the sheer weight of the ferry... and concerns
about its structural condition after being submerged under seawater for so long.
For more, we connect to our Kim Min-ji -- who is at the site.
Min-ji, fill us in on the latest.
Mark There's been a change in plans with the land
transfer operation.
Initially, the Sewol-ho ferry was to be placed on support brackets with the deck facing the
dock side,... but officials have decided to keep it where it is now.
That's because of the weak structural condition of the ferry,... and they have found alterations
in the structure while it was being moved.
If the ferry is moved further,... there's concern that it could sustain further damage.
"Officials have discovered malformations due to the vessel's weak structure.
As there's a possibility of further damage if the vessel is moved further,... we've decided
to secure the vessel at its current location.
We will conduct related investigations in a timely manner and take appropriate safety
measures."
The Sewol-ho ferry completely came onto shore on Sunday afternoon,... after a four-and-a-half-hour
transfer to the semi-submersible, which the ferry was on.
A total of 600 wheeled platform vehicles, or modular transporters,... were used to support
the ferry,... which is estimated to weigh 17-thousand tons.
Now, just to give you a brief recap -- The land transfer comes nearly three years....
after the vessel capsized off Korea's southwestern coast on April 16th, 2014,... killing 304
people,... and nine passengers are still unaccounted for.
Over the next week,... the vessel will be disinfected and fumigated and a safety check
will be conducted.
When that's done, the search for the missing will begin.
An underwater search of the seabed where the Sewol-ho lay is also expected to resume later
in the afternoon,... if the currents subside.
Divers will be searching an area covering 32 square kilometers over the next two months...
and a metal fence has been installed there to prevent any bodies from being lost.
Back to you, Mark.
