Hi, Mirko here from Healthy Pet Systems.
Today I will answer the question: How do I know if my dog is in heat?
So let's start.
5 initial signs that the dog is in the mating season are:
First sign, dog bleeding.
One of the first signs that mating season has started is dog bleeding.
Bleeding occurs in the first cycle of dog heat which is called proestrus.
Second sign, changes in behavior.
During the mating season, your dog will be more nervous, more agitated and more cautious.
Also in some periods of heat, a female may become aggressive towards other dogs and humans.
On the other hand, there are a few cases where the opposite happened and the dog became less
active.
Third sign, female is urinating more often.
Urinating is a typical way of communication for dogs.
During the mating season, the female will urinate more often so that other dogs know
she is in a mating season.
Fourth sign, smell.
The males will sniff the females more often during the mating season due to hormonal changes.
A characteristic odor is a signal to the male that the female is ready for mating.
Fifth signal, Changes in appetite.
The dog's body requires more energy during the mating season, and their appetite will
increase.
However, in the rare cases when the female became less active appetite may decrease.
