In the last decade the rise of Hallyu, the Korean Wave has been remarkable and it
hasn't show any sign of stopping. The Korean Wave began to gain more attention
since 2002 thanks to the popularity of South Korean television dramas, which
acted as a starting point and followed by the widespread of South Korean music
groups. Korean celebrities are role models for millions, especially young
citizens the detail narrative of their lives
certainly fascinate many of us. Hence the press will automatically get thrown into
covering celebrity gossip in order to get attention from its audience. However
due to this massive coverage many cable star have been manipulated into becoming
merely pawns on the political chessboard. Scandals erupted as if they were inadvertent but might actually the results of the indirect participant of
Korean powerful individuals to swift the public attention to where they desire it
to be. That is when fake news, in particularly, malicious lies come in
handy. Park Yoochun is well known as a member of DBSK. With a total number
of fans reaching 23.4 million in Asia and 56 million worldwide
thirteen years in the business, he hadn't been involved in any scandals
not only until the 13 of June 2016 when he was accused of sexual assault which
went viral and was considered one of the most scandalous events of the year the
headlines were nothing but updates from his case. Little do people notice that
the scandal had become a screen that completely covered three other buzzing
political events happened to break out during his long trial. A few days before the scandal exploded on the 10th of June Lotte group was accused of setting
up a black fun and embezzlement bribing hundreds of billions won with the
government officials. Following that on the 16th, Korean's defense industry was
spotted causing budget losses of more than 100 billion won and on the 17th of June
critics went outraged with John Lee, the person who was responsible for the death of 100 people because of his factories
but his arrest warrant dropped. The timeline of those political scandals must explain
the long period of the trial as every time the investigation on Park Yoonchu
seems to end one more anonymous victim appeared. After all, the results came out
in the favor of the Korean star, he was proved innocent and was being
framed by fake accusation but that was enough to keep the public busy so three
political scandals was buried in silent despite the serious ramification
therefore it was suspected that Park Yoochun's scandal was revealed to distract
the public from those politics scandals. There were many similar cases like that
happened. For example, during the time hundreds of Korean official were founded
in casinos, the news of G-Dragon using marijuana exploded yet he was then found
innocent but never got mentioned. In March 2015 when former Korean president
Lee Myung Bak was suspected of corruption the media was too busy
delivering the news of the new power couple Lee Min Ho and Suzy love affair
all of this coincidences had successfully put the political related
news to sleep although it is reasonable to doubt that
they might be manipulated by the government however the media does not
need to be controlled by any particular force in order to help bring out and
strap people with this type of fake news. All it takes is to understand the
demand and get the disinformation out and everything will happen naturally the
rumor and the false information can be spread by anyone but it has to be
attractive enough to cut the press attention and when the press cover the
malicious lie the news consumer will eventually change their attention
what really comes down from this matter of malicious lies is that it leaves
consequences. It can be seen that most of the incidents are individual scandals
which explode to cover up for organizations wrongdoing as instead of
dealing with its own problem those organizations choose to find a way out
and continue to fool the public. On the other hand many celebrities career or
even personal lives have been ruined forever
some have committed suicide due to the heavy pressure so that in order not to
be fooled by the hoax, critical thinking is a key in media and information
literacy instead of jumping right into the conclusion and being biased keep
calm spend time for double-checking and asking questions. First criteria that
needed to be considered are the sources. Are they credible? Look for the contact
information with a verifiable address perform an independent search for new
source, compare and verify the links as well. Next question is the timing why the
victim came out in such scattered timeline when there were so many
political scandals when they have all the evidence for the dating rumors why
they're releasing then. Was that a coincident? Keep in mind that one of the
reason for delay of publishing news can be used to either trigger or redirect
public's attention as the way that the publisher wants. In order to combat fake
news in Asian context and in this case media framing the one most necessary and
urgent tasks is to educate people about media literacy the public especially
young audience must learn to balance out the interest in news. Beside that
fact-checking websites are a great tool for them to utilize in case of false
rumor suspects. For example the press didn't clear G-Dragon's name and people
still think that he uses drugs. In most Asian countries the matter of fact
checking is still widely underrated, in South Korea is not an exception. People
are still getting distracted by the entertainment gossip news more than
the serious ones. It is the people's deliberate choice to believe viral
deception news rather than any external force that controls it
By teaching people, especially young generation about the importance of media literacy will
decrease the rate of false information online significantly although urging the
government and influential corporations like Facebook and Google to take action
is also very needed
