The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs has confirmed that a highly pathogenic

strain of avian influenza was found in Cheonan, Chungcheongnam-do Province.

The H5N6 strain of the virus was detected in wild bird droppings near a local stream.

It's the fourth time that H5N6 has been found in Cheonan.

Following the confirmation,... the government ordered an immediate ban on the movement of

all poultry from over a hundred farms.

Authorities also strengthened quarantine measures on those farms, and said they're doing all

they can to prevent further spread of the virus.

Two opposition parties launch joint body to start official talks for potential merger - Duration: 1:54.

A major shift in Korea's political paradigm could be on the horizon at the National Assembly

-- with the center-left People's Party and minor conservative Bareun Party paving the

way for a potential merger.

The two opposition parties launched a joint committee this morning to start official talks

for their integration.

Kim Min-ji reports.

Korea's third and fourth largest political parties launched a joint committee Wednesday...

that will act as a bridge for a potential merger.

The development comes after a string of closed-door meetings between two lawmakers from each side

-- the center-left People's Party and the minor conservative Bareun Party.

Details are in short supply,.. but it's likely they'll form a brand new party.

The committee will be tasked with discussing the specifics of the procedure... as well

as determining when to hold a national convention to vote on the merger as well as the timing

of the new party's launch.

The process picked up steam... following a nationwide ballot among members of the People's

Party last week -- in which those that took part said they backed the plan to join forces

with the Bareun Party.

If the merger goes through, the two sides would make up the National Assembly's third

biggest negotiating bloc -- and also put two former presidential candidates and political

heavyweights -- Ahn Cheol-soo and Yoo Seong-min -- in the same party.

Eyes will be on how this will impact legislative affairs -- and whether the new party could

become a stumbling block for the ruling Democratic Party of Korea or the main opposition Liberty

Korea Party.

The People's Party is already seen to have growing influence as the party with the deciding

vote -- and a merger will empower it even further.

At the same time, it will give the Bareun Party more say in parliamentary affairs...

after it recently lost its status as a negotiating bloc following the defection of several lawmakers

to the main opposition party.

Egypt extends state of emergency for three months - Duration: 0:41.

Egypt's president has issued a decree to extend a nationwide state of emergency for three

months as fears of terrorism still linger.

The country's state news agency said on Tuesday that the extension will start from the 13th

of this month in order to help tackle what it called the dangers and funding of terrorism.

Egypt first imposed the current state of emergency last April after two church bombings killed

at least 45 people.

It was extended twice - once in July and again in October.

The country faces an ISIS insurgency in the North Sinai region that has killed hundreds

of policemen, soldiers, and civilians.

Boosting job creation among SMEs key for 2018: experts - Duration: 1:57.

South Korea is expected to see steady economic growth this year.

But that growth might not be reflected in the job market,... as the number of jobs created

is expected to be at a similar level to 2017.

Song Ji-sun explains why.

Given the current growth trend...

South Korea's GDP per capita is expected to hit 30-thousand US dollars this year for the

first time in the country's history,... with economic growth continuing to stay in the

three-percent range growth for two consecutive years.

But that doesn't mean more people will find jobs this year.

The number of new jobs will only hover at around 300-thousand - a similar level as last

year.

Job prospects in the public sector look good - as the government has budgeted for hiring

new public workers - but it's not so bright for the private sector.

The raising of the minimum wage - now at seven dollars an hour, up 16 percent from 2017,

is considered a major factor.

(Korean) "Companies are likely to be reluctant to hire

new, young entry-level employees as they see more uncertainties that can raise employment

costs."

Experts say smaller companies are key for job creation,... as small and mid-sized companies

created over 2-million jobs in the past five years - accounting for 90-percent of new job

positions.

(Korean) "The government must push for further deregulation

for small and mid-sized companies so that they can create jobs in a sustainable and

stable manner."

They also point out that one-time incentives or temporary subsidies are not enough - and

practical incentives must reward companies that actively create jobs.

Chinese shipping company denies its ship used for North Korean trade - Duration: 0:53.

The ship manager of the Lighthouse Winmore, a tanker recently seized in South Korea for

alleged sanctions violations has denied any knowledge of the vessel's involvement in trade

with North Korean entities.

The deputy general manager of the Winmore's Chinese ship management firm told the South

China Morning Post that the company was unaware the tanker had been used to breach UN sanctions

imposed on North Korea.

He said the company just rents the ships out and are not aware of what goods the ship carry's

emphasizing that Winmore operates under a charter to a Taiwanese company.

This Hong Kong registered shipping vessel was seized and inspected by South Korean customs

officials in late November for transferring 6-hundred tons of refined oil to a North Korean

ship on October 19th.

Court to review whether to issue arrest warrants for two opposition lawmakers - Duration: 1:00.

Two lawmakers from Korea's main opposition Liberty Korea Party could face arrest as early

as Wednesday evening.

The Seoul Central District Court began holding arraignment sessions this morning.... for

four-term lawmaker Choi Kyung-hwan... on suspicions of accepting bribes,... as well as two-term

lawmaker Lee Woo-hyun... on allegations he accepted illegal political funds.

The court will likely reach a decision on whether to issue arrest warrants later this

evening or early Thursday.

Prosecutors requested arrest warrants for the two back in December,... but the process

was delayed... as sitting lawmakers are immune from criminal prosecution or arrest while

a parliamentary session is open.

They can however, be arrested.... through a consent by a majority of fellow lawmakers....

reached through a vote.

The arrest motions were reported during last Friday's full parliamentary meeting,... but

a vote was not held since the December parliamentary session closed the same day.
