Imagine if the most complex problems could be solved by
the most creative and innovative people from the community.
Governments don't have all the answers, we need a new model
to solve from the smallest problems to the biggest problems we are facing.
As a civic tech community, as a hacker community,
What we strive for is precisely to find new ways in which
technology can solve public problems.
The project arises from the restlessness
of what's happening around us, to find new forms of governance.
We have a great collaboration,
between Codeando México,
the GovLab, which is the Governance Lab
from New York University and the Municipality of San Pedro.
To implement an open government program.
For this, first we determined the "openness"
of the Municipality. And the effectiveness of their citizen participation policies.
So first, we created the diagnosis.
Second, we had workshops on problem definition.
We interviewed Municipality officials and subject-matter experts
to understand the most pressing and urgent problems the Municipality was facing.
Having the problem definitions, we built the platform, DesafíoSP.
The call was, these are the problems we are facing, we want your help,
we want you to bring your knowledge,
your skills, the topics you are passionate about, so that together we can co-create
solutions to these public problems.
We receives 52 proposals and, during the month of December, we has the task
with GovLab and Codeando to rate the 52 proposals,
and from them, we ended up choosing 12.
The citizen's response was incredible, and now, what's next
is that the 65 people behind these 12 proposals, get involved
in the process of solving these public problems.
For these they will receive personalized coaching so that
their projects materialize into implementable solutions.
The value I find on involving citizens in
solving public problems, was that many of the problems we face
as a Municipality, they also do but, at the same time, they bring an outsider perspective
that helps a lot in creating solutions.
They have a lot of experience,
They have a lot of skills, that can create
a lot of value for the Municipality, for the government to find solutions to social problems.
I'm stroke by the creativity they have
to solve the problems.
There's new creative ways, new tech ways, even new fun ways.
And for us, we have a big challenge.
We are collaborating together
a group or professors with different backgrounds
and this new form of working together that is transversal, interdisciplinary
will create a more concrete solution.
The biggest win of this project is precisely its process.
How we approach differently the way in which we solve problems, the way in which we
organize ourselves to create solutions.
With one or two projects that work that create results, it will be
clear that there's no longer any taboo topic,
that everything can be discussed, and that any citizen can approach the
Municipality and say, hey, we can solve this in this way.
We are trying to re-image our governments,
to create this dream in which what's public
and the interest and passion to solve public problems can overcome
any identity and ideology barrier.
DesafíoSP, is a new model for citizen participación
and I think that it should reach every Municipality in México, because
the citizen gets truly involved in the process of creating public policies and solutions to social problems.
DesafíoSP is innovative because it challenges citizens
to collaborate differently with the government.
It gives us the opportunity o lead and be an example
of how we could carry out differently the municipal management.
It breaks the barriers between the citizens and their government officials,
it allows citizens to become involved and work together with the government.
DesafíoSP is innovative because it introduces a new governance model,
because it's the first time that I consider
we are implementing a new way in which community participation is being
extensively implemented alongside municipality officials
to solve the public problems we face.
