>> Adrienne: IT IS WEDNESDAY
NOVEMBER 29TH.
THIS IS "THE NATIONAL."
TONIGHT, A DEADLY STAGE COLLAPSE
AT A RADIOHEAD CONCERT RAISED
CONCERNS ABOUT WORK PLACE SAFETY
IN CANADA.
NOW A BAND MEMBER IS SPEAKING
AND DEMANDING CHANGE.
>> Andrew: DONALD TRUMP UNDER
FIRE FOR RETWEETING ANTI MUSLIM
VIDEOS.
>> Ian: ANOTHER FALL FROM GRACE,
THIS TIME ONE OF THE BIGGEST
NAMES IN MORNING TELEVISION.
MATT LAUER OF "THE TODAY SHOW"
WAS FIRED AFTER AN EMPLOY MADE
ALLEGATIONS OF INAPPROPRIATE
ADVANCES TO THE NETWORK.
>> GOOD MORNING.
BREAKING NEWS OVERNIGHT, MATT
LAUER HAS BEEN TERMINATED FROM
NBC NEWS.
THIS IS A SAD MORNING AT TODAY.
>> Ian: THEY READ A MEMO FROM
THE PRESIDENT OF NBC NEWS...
>> TODAY IT'S ABOUT POLITICS
HAPPENING IN WASHINGTON.
>> Reporter: LAUER HAS BEEN THE
CORNERSTONE OF THE TODAY SHOW
FOR TWO DECADES AND EARNED
$25 MILLION A YEAR.
SHORTLY AFTER THE ANNOUNCEMENT,
MULTIPLE MEDIA REPORTS SUGGESTED
THAT LAUER ENGAGED IN SEXUAL
MISCONDUCT WITH A COLLEAGUE
DURING THE SOCHI OLYMPICS AND
ALLEGED PATTERN OF INVITING
WOMEN TO HIS HOTEL ROOM WHILE
TRAVELLING ON ASSIGNMENT AND
REPORTS THAT LAUER FREQUENTLY
QUIZZED WOMEN ABOUT SEX LIVES AT
WORK AND GAVE A SEX TOY TO A
COLLEAGUE WITH A GRAPHIC NOTE
AND EXPOSED HIMSELF TO A FEMALE
EMPLOYEE IN AN OFFICE, AN OFFICE
WITH A DOOR THAT COULD BE LOCKED
WITH A BUTTEN UNDER THE DESK.
THE REPORT SAYS IT WAS WELL
KNOWN BY STAFF.
MAKING CONVERSATIONS LIKE THIS
AWKWARD.
>> Reporter: DID YOU SEND A LEWD
TEXT MESSAGE TO AN EMPLOYEE AT
FOX NEWS?
>> Interview: NO.
>> Reporter: THINK ABOUT THE
FIVE WOMEN, THEY CAME FORWARD
AND FILED COMPLAINTS AGAINST THE
BIGGEST STAR AT THE NETWORK.
>> Reporter: VARIETY REPORTS
THAT SEVERAL WOMEN LAUNCHED
COMPLAINTS IN THE PAST ABOUT
LAUER WITH EXECUTIVES BUT NO
ACTIONS WERE TAKEN.
>> WE ARE GRAPPLING WITH A
DILEMMA SO MANY HAVE FACED, HOW
DO YOU RECONCILE YOUR LOVE FOR
SOMEONE WITH THE REVELATION THEY
HAVE BEHAVED BADLY.
>> Reporter: "THE NEW YORK
TIMES" IS ALSO INVESTIGATING
LAUER, NBC RECEIVED TWO MORE
COMPLAINTS JUST TODAY ABOUT THE
HOST AND CURRENT NEWS MANAGEMENT
WAS NOT AWARE OF ANY COMPLAINTS
UNTIL THIS WEEK.
STEVEN D'SOUZA HAS MORE REACTION
ON LAUER, THE LATEST IN A
GROWING LIST OF HIGH POWERED MEN
FIRED FOR SEXUAL HARASSMENT OR
ASSAULT.
>> Reporter: THE REPORTS TODAY
SUGGEST MATT LAUER'S BEHAVIOUR
WAS NOT A SECRET TO OTHER
EMPLOYEES BUT TO FANS, IT WAS A
BOMBSHELL.
>> Interview: I'M SHOCKED.
IT WAS SO UNEXPECTED.
>> Interview: I'M SO SAD.
IT IS HARD TO BELIEVE.
>> Interview: I NEVER THOUGHT
ANYTHING LIKE THAT -- I NEVER
THOUGHT IT OF OTHER PEOPLE
EITHER, I GUESS ANYBODY CAN.
>> Reporter: IT WAS SUPPOSED TO
BE A PERFECT DAY AT ROCKEFELLER
CENTRE, THE ANNUAL CHRISTMAS
TREE LIGHTING BUT TODAY'S
NEWSCAST A SHADOW OVER THE
EVENT.
>> Interview: I FEEL VERY
DISAPPOINTED IN SO MANY PEOPLE
AND I FEEL SAD FOR THE POOR
WOMEN WHO HAVE HAD TO GO THROUGH
THIS FOR SO MANY YEARS.
>> Interview: THE FACT THAT MATT
LAUER CAN BE DISMISSED TELLS YOU
SOMETHING IMPORTANT ABOUT THE
MOMENT WE'RE IN.
>> Reporter: NPR MEDIA REPORTER
SAYS WHILE THERE ARE QUESTIONS
ABOUT WHAT NBC KNEW AND WHEN,
THE IMPORTANCE OF LAUER'S FIRING
CAN'T BE UNDERESTIMATED.
>> Interview: HE POWERS THE
TODAY SHOW, WHICH IS BY FAR AND
AWAY THE ECONOMIC ENGINE THAT
PROPELS THE SUCCESSES OF NBC
NEWS, WHICH TELLS YOU THEY TOOK
THE CHARGE SERIOUSLY.
>> Reporter: HE SAYS THE MEDIA
IS GOING THROUGH A CHANGE, NPR
HAS HAD TWO SENIOR MANAGERS
LEAVE AFTER FORMAL COMPLAINTS
WERE MADE.
>> Interview: I THINK WE'RE
SEEING THE REVOLUTION WHERE
ALLEGATIONS AGAINST PEOPLE WHO
WOULD HAVE HAD MOST PROTECTIVE
STATUS ARE BEING TREATED WITH
THE UPMOST SERIOUSNESS.
>> Reporter: SOME PEOPLE SAY IT
IS ABOUT TIME.
>> Interview: I THOUGHT IT WOULD
COME EVENTUALLY.
>> Interview: A BENCHMARK IN
HISTORY THAT THIS IS NO LONGER
GOING TO BE TOLERATED.
>> Reporter: THE QUESTION NOW
MANY ARE AFRAID TO ASK OR EVEN
THINK ABOUT, WHO'S NEXT?
STEVEN D'SOUZA CBC NEWS NEW
YORK.
>> Ian: THE IMPACT OF THE
ALLEGATIONS STRETCH WELL BEYOND
NEW YORK AND THE UNITED STATES.
A LAWYER WITH EXPERTISE IN
EMPLOYMENT AND HUMAN RIGHTS
ISSUES, I WANT TO ASK YOU ABOUT
WHAT HAPPENED IN NEW YORK.
NBC APPARENTLY GETTING THE
COMPLAINT MONDAY NIGHT AND
FIRING MATT LAUER THIS MORNING,
WEDNESDAY MORNING.
HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT THE SPEED
WITH WHICH IT HAPPENED?
>> Interview: IT TELLS ME THEY
WERE FAR MORE CONCERNED ABOUT
RUNNING DAMAGE CONTROL FROM A PR
PERSPECTIVE THAN WRONGFUL
TERMINATION SUIT.
IT IS HIGHLY UNLIKELY THEY DID
AN INVESTIGATION THAT MR. LAUER
IS ENTITLED TO.
>> Ian: THIS IS GETTING A LOT OF
ATTENTION, THE #METOO MOVEMENT
GETTING A LOT OF SUPPORT AROUND
THE WORLD.
WHAT ARE YOU SEEING IN CANADA?
>> Interview: I CAN TELL YOU
#METOO HAS PROVIDED WOMEN A
PLATFORM FOR WOMEN TO COME
FORWARD WITH WHAT WE KNOW AS A
SYSTEMIC CRISIS IN CANADA AS
WELL.
I HAVE A NUMBER OF EMPLOYERS
REACHING OUT TO ME NOT IN
RESPONSE TO ANYTHING THAT HAS
HAPPENED SIMPLY TO SAY CAN YOU
TRAIN OUR HR MANAGERS AND
EXPLAIN SOME OF THE ASTRONOMICAL
LEGISLATIVE CHANGES WE HAVE SEEN
SO HR EMPLOYEES UNDERSTAND AND
MORE IMPORTANTLY, STARTING THE
UNDERSTAND THAT THE PUBLIC
PERCEPTION IS THE BUCK STOPS
WITH THE EMPLOYER TO CREATE A
HEALTH AND SAFE WORK
ENVIRONMENT.
SIMPLY HAVING A CODE OF CONDUCT
ON THE WALL IS NOT ENOUGH.
PEOPLE NEED TO UNDERSTAND IT AND
YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE AS THE
EMPLOYER TO MAKE SURE PEOPLE ARE
TRAINED ON IT.
>> Ian: IT'S A BIG QUESTION, FOR
WOMEN WHO ARE WATCHING WHO HAS A
COMPLAINT IN CANADA, WHAT KIND
OF ROAD DOES SHE FACE NOW?
>> Interview: I CAN TELL THAT
WOMAN THERE IS A LOT OF SUPPORT
FOR HER FROM A LEGISLATIVE AND
REGULATORY PERSPECTIVE.
AT THIS POINT SHE CAN COME
FORWARD WITH HER COMPLAINT TO
HER HR DEPARTMENT HOPEFULLY
WITHOUT FEAR OF REPRISAL OR
PUNITIVE ACTION ON THE
EMPLOYER'S PART.
>> Ian: DO YOU THINK THAT WILL
HAPPEN, NOT RETALIATION OR
PUNISHMENT?
>> Interview: IT DEPENDS ON THE
EMPLOYER.
THE LARGE EMPLOYERS KNOW IT
WOULD BE PR SUICIDE AT THIS
POINT TO SWEEP IT UNDER THE RUG
BUT I SEE IT AS A PROBLEM STILL
WITH THE SMALL AND MEDIUM SIZED
EMPLOYERS.
>> Ian: THANK YOU VERY MUCH.
LAUER WASN'T THE ONLY ONE MAKING
HEADLINES TODAY, THE CREATOR OF
THE LONG RUNNING RADIO SHOW, "A
PRAIRIE HOME COMPANION" LOST HIS
JOB BECAUSE OF ACCUSATIONS OF
INAPPROPRIATE BEHAVIOUR, FIRED
BY MINNESOTA PUBLIC RADIO
BECAUSE OF A COMPLAINT FROM A
FEMALE COLLEAGUE.
HE RETIRED FROM THE SHOW LAST
YEAR BUT WORKING ON OTHER
PROJECTS FOR THE NETWORK.
HE TOLD THE MINNEAPOLIS STAR
THAT HE PUT HIS BARE HAND UP A
WOMAN'S BACK AND IMMEDIATELY
APOLOGIZED.
OF COURSE MANY WONDERING WHO IS
NEXT.
IT SEEMS INEVITABLE WE'LL HEAR
OF OR ABOUT OTHER BIG NAMES.
>> Andrew: SO MUCH ATTENTION HAS
BEEN ON THE UNITED STATES
BECAUSE OF ALL THIS AND BECAUSE
OF WHAT THEIR PRESIDENT HAS BEEN
UP TO SINCE HE BEGAN CAMPAIGNING
FOR PRESIDENT.
DONALD TRUMP HAS HAD MUSLIMS
SQUARELY IN HIS SIGHTS, ONCE IN
OFFICE HE TRIED TO BAN MUSLIMS
FROM SEVERAL COUNTRIES AND STILL
TODAY, SOME SAY HE'S HIT A NEW
LOW.
>> AROUND THE WORLD PEOPLE ARE
LOOKING AT THE UNITED STATES OF
AMERICA AND WHAT IS BEING SENT
OUT FROM THIS WHITE HOUSE IS
UNAMERICAN AND SHAMEFUL.
>> Andrew: HERE IT IS, RETWEETS
OF INFLAMMATORY VIDEOS FIRST
POSTED BY THE DEPUTY LEADER OF A
BRITISH FAR RIGHT ANTI IMMIGRANT
GROUP.
JAYDA FRANSEN POSTED THREE
UNVERIFIED VIDEOS OF WHAT SHE
SAYS ARE MUSLIMS ENGAGING IN
VIOLENCE AND TAKING ANTI
CHRISTIAN ACTIONS BUT THAT
DONALD TRUMP WOULD RETWEET THEM,
HE HAS MORE THAN 43 MILLION
FOLLOWERS TO HER THOUSANDS.
IT HAS PEOPLE ACCUSING TRUMP OF
BEING HATEFUL AND SOME BRITISH
M.P.s WANT HIS TRIP CANCELLED.
THOMAS DAIGLE SPOKE TO JAYDA
FRANSEN TODAY.
>> Reporter: THIS IS THE WOMAN
GIVEN A GLOBAL AUDIENCE BY THE
U.S. PRESIDENT.
JAYDA FRANSEN, KNOWN FOR YELLING
AT MUSLIMS AND STAGING FAR RIGHT
NATURALIST MARCHES WITH HER
FRINGE GROUP.
>> Interview: THE PEOPLE WHO
WANT IT NOW ARE RELATIVELY
EXTREME, ARRESTED FOR INCITING
HATRED REGULARLY.
>> Reporter: JAYDA FRANSEN IS
CHARGED AGAIN WITH RELIGIOUSLY
AGGRAVATED HARASSMENT.
>> Interview: WE DON'T PLAN TO
ALLOW IT TO SILENCE.
>> Reporter: SHE STILL MAKES
WILD STATEMENTS LIKE THIS.
>> Interview: MUSLIMS ARE OBLIGE
TO KILL EVERY NON MUSLIM.
THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED
STATES HAS RECOGNIZED AN
INDIVIDUAL IS BEING IMPRISONED
FOR CRITICIZING ISLAM.
>> Reporter: DO YOU THINK HE
REALLY PUT THAT MUCH THOUGHT
INTO IT OR HE FOUND THIS VIDEO
AND LIKED IT AND RETWEETED IT
AND RETWEETED A COUPLE MORE AND
MOVED ON?
>> Interview: I WOULD NOT
SUGGEST THAT THE PRESIDENT OF
THE UNITED STATES RETWEETED
THREE VIDEOS FROM MY ACCOUNT
WITHOUT KNOWLEDGE OF MY PLIGHT
AND I THANK HIM FOR HIS PUBLIC
SUPPORT.
>> Reporter: TRUMP'S RETWEETS
HIT HOME FOR THE FAMILY OF JO
COX, THE BRITISH M.P. KILLED
LAST YEAR BY A RIGHT WING
EXTREMIST WHO SHOUTED BRITAIN
FIRST AS HE ATTACKED HER.
>> Interview: THE FACT THAT HE
DIDN'T CHECK FIRST OR THINK OF
THE CONTENT OF THE TWEETS BEFORE
DOING IT, I THINK SUGGESTS HIS
JUDGMENT IS LACKING.
>> Reporter: A SPOKES PERSON FOR
THERESA MAY ACKNOWLEDGED IT WAS
WRONG FOR THE PRESIDENT TO SHARE
THE VIDEOS.
WITH JUST THREE RETWEETS, HE'S
IMBOLDENED A SELF STYLED
POLITICAL PARTY, CONSIDERED MORE
WIDE LIE AS A HATE GROUP.
>> Andrew: THIS EVENING TRUMP
TWEETED AGAIN ON THIS, DIRECTLY
BACK AT THE BRITISH PRIME
MINISTER IN FACT SAYING...
TRUMP TWEETED THAT TWICE, THE
FIRST TIME HE TAGGED THE WRONG
THERESA MAY.
LISTEN TO WHAT JAMES CLAPPER HAD
TO SAY ABOUT THE RETWEETS.
HE SEEMS TO HAVE NO IDEA WHAT IS
GOING THROUGH TRUMP'S MIND RIGHT
NOW.
>> Interview: IT'S BAZAAR AND
DISTURBING AND PARTICULARLY WHEN
I THINK OF HIM DOING THAT IN THE
CONTEXT OF NORTH KOREA.
WHERE MODERATION AND TEMPERANCE
AND THOUGHT I THINK IS CRITICAL.
>> Andrew: TEMPERANCE AND TRUMP,
TWO WORDS YOU DON'T OFTEN HEAR
TOGETHER AND WHEN CLAPPER
MENTIONED NORTH KOREA, THAT WAS
ONE OF MANY THINGS TRUMP HAD ON
HIS MIND.
TAKE A LOOK AT HIS FEED.
HERE'S A RETWEET OF HIS PRESS
SECRETARY, SHE WAS HAPPY CNN IS
GOING TO BOYCOTT THE WHITE HOUSE
CHRISTMAS PARTY AT 6:49 A.M.
AT 7:03 ON TO THE STOCK MARKET,
BRAGGING ABOUT THE SUCCESS OF
HIS OWN POLICIES AND AT 7:16
COMMENTING ON MATT LAUER BEING
FIRED SAYING...
AND HE POINTED AT THE PAST OF
NBC NEWS BOSS ANDY LACK.
LET'S BRING IN KEITH BOAG IN
WASHINGTON.
WE SAW THIS STREAM OF
CONSCIOUSNESS FROM THE PRESIDENT
ON TWITTER.
WHAT DID YOU MAKE OF THAT?
>> Reporter: I THINK IT'S HARD
TO DENY THAT THE BIG PICTURE
ABOUT THIS, THERE ARE SERIOUS
THINGS HAPPENING IN THE WORLD
BUT YET THE PRESIDENT DOESN'T
SEEM TO BE ABLE TO FOCUS ON
THEM.
WE HAD FOR INSTANCE THE TEST OF
A MISSILE BY NORTH KOREA
OVERNIGHT, THE LAST 48 HOURS
RATHER AND HE'S TWEETING ABOUT
THE VIDEOS YOU MENTIONED
EARLIER.
IN THIS TOWN THERE'S ANOTHER
STORY CAUSING A LOT OF CONCERN
THAT ISN'T PERHAPS GETTING AS
MUCH ATTENTION IN CANADA, "THE
NEW YORK TIMES" REPORT THAT FOR
MOST OF THE PAST YEAR, DONALD
TRUMP HAS BEEN TELLING PEOPLE
THE ACCESS HOLLYWOOD TAPE, THE
ONE THAT CAME OUT DURING THE
ELECTION, HE'S SAYING THAT'S NOT
HIM ON THE TAPE, EVEN THOUGH THE
AUDIO AND VIDEO IS CLEARLY HIM,
THERE WERE WITNESSES TO IT, HE
ADMITTED IT WAS HIM LAST YEAR.
AND HE IS STILL OBSESSED IF
BARACK OBAMA WAS BORN IN THE
UNITED STATES AND ELIGIBLE TO BE
PRESIDENT.
HE'S REVIVING THE BERTHERISM
HOAX AGAIN.
THE DANGERS OF THE APPARENT
IMMINENT THREATS, THE SENSE THAT
THE PRESIDENT DOESN'T HAVE A
GRIP ON REALITY IS A WORRY.
>> Andrew: WHO KNOWS WHAT WE'LL
BE TALKING ABOUT TOMORROW.
WHERE DOES THIS LEAD?
>> Reporter: THE CONGRESS IS
SUPPOSED TO KEEP A CHECK ON THE
PRESIDENT.
BUT THE CONGRESS IS CONTROLLED
BY REPUBLICANS AND RIGHT NOW
THEY'RE FOCUSED ON THE TAX CUT
PROPOSAL, THEY WANT TO GET IT
DONE QUICKLY AND HAVE THE
PRESIDENT SIGN IT IN THE NEW
YEAR.
THAT'S THEIR PRIORITY.
>> Andrew: THANK YOU.
AND SO ADRIENNE, KEITH MENTIONED
NORTH KOREA ON THE LONG LIST OF
THINGS REQUIRING THE PRESIDENT'S
ATTENTION AND ON THAT FRONT NOW,
THINGS ARE REALLY MOVING.
>> Adrienne: THERE'S NO
QUESTION, THE RHETORIC IS
CERTAINLY MOVING AND DONALD
TRUMP IS NOW PROMISING
ADDITIONAL MAJOR SANCTIONS
AGAINST NORTH KOREA THIS
EVENING.
THAT'S JUST ONE DAY AFTER THE
COUNTRY'S MOST POWERFUL WEAPON'S
TEST TO DATE.
IF PYONGYANG IS NERVOUS ABOUT
REPERCUSSIONS IT'S NOT LEADING
ON.
STATE BROADCASTER AIRED PICTURES
OF NORTH KOREANS ELATED, REAL OR
NOT, BUT THE U.N. CONDEMNED THE
TEST OVER AND OVER AGAIN AND THE
U.S. AMBASSADOR DEMANDED
DIPLOMATIC TIES BE SEVERED AND
ASKING CHINA TO CUT OFF ALL
SUPPLIES OF CRUDE AND TRUMP
COULDN'T RESIST GETTING IN A
PERSONAL DIG AGAINST KIM
JONG-UN.
>> President Donald Trump:
LITTLE ROCKET MAN.
HE'S A SICK PUPPY.
>> Adrienne: WASHINGTON VOWED
MORE SANCTIONS ARE COMING,
LIKELY FOCUSED ON THE NORTH'S
FINANCIAL INSTITUTIONS.
THE RISING TENSIONS HAVE
PROMPTED CANADIAN OFFICIALS TO
PLAN FOR WORST CASE SCENARIOS.
CBC NEWS HAS LEARNED OTTAWA IS
REVIEWING HOW READY CANADA WILL
BE IN THE EVENT OF A NUCLEAR
STRIKE.
MURRAY BREWSTER HAS OBTAINED A
COPY OF THE CONTINGENCY PLANS.
>> Reporter: THESE ARE THE KIND
OF THINGS YOU DON'T WANT TO
THINK ABOUT, WHAT WOULD HAPPEN
IF A NUCLEAR TIP MISSILE WENT
OFF HERE?
IN MILITARY TERMS IT'S A
DECAPATION STRIKE, MEANT TO TAKE
DOWN A GOVERNMENT.
CBC NEWS HAS OBTAINED DOCUMENTS
THAT SHOWS THEY'RE PLANNING FOR
IT.
THE DOCUMENT CONTINUITY OF
CONSTITUTIONAL GOVERNMENT WAS
REVIVED IN THE EVENT THAT THE
CAPITAL REGION BECOMES UNVIABLE.
SENIOR OFFICIALS AND CABINET
MINISTERS WOULD BE EVACUATED TO
ONE OF THE SECRET LOCATIONS.
FROM THERE, THEY WOULD CONTINUE
TO RUN THE COUNTRY.
DURING THE COLD WAR, THESE KIND
OF PLANS WERE ROUTINE.
THE FIRST ONE WAS EXERCISED IN
1959 AND INVOLVED HELICOPTERS
LANDING JUST OVER THERE ON THE
EAST SIDE OF PARLIAMENT, PICKING
UP THE PRIME MINISTER, CABINET
AND FLYING THEM TO AIR BASE AND
ON TO THE BUNKER.
IT HAUNTED THOSE IN CHARGE UNTIL
THE END OF THE COLD WAR.
THAT MAKES THE REVISION OF THE
PLAN SIGNIFICANT.
>> Interview: I GREW UP IN THAT
PERIOD SO FOR ME IT'S GOING BACK
TO THE OLD WAYS OF DOING THINGS.
>> Reporter: AN ENTIRE
GENERATION OF CANADIAN LEADERS
HAVEN'T HAD TO THINK IN THESE
TERMS UNTIL RUSSIA ANNEXATION OF
CRIMEA AND NORTH KOREA.
>> Interview: WITH NORTH KOREA,
THE KIND OF LEADER THEY HAVE AND
VERBIAGE THAT HAS COME OUT,
PEOPLE HAVE BECOME CONCERNED IF
HE WILL FIRE THE WEAPON.
>> Reporter: HOW SIGNIFICANT IS
IT THAT THEY HAVE REFRESHED THE
PLAN AT THIS TIME?
>> Interview: IT'S PRUDENCE.
IT'S SIMPLE PRUDENCE TO DO IT.
I THINK IT WOULD BE OVER THE TOP
TO ACTUALLY SPEND EXTRAORDINARY
AMOUNTS OF FINANCES ON IT.
>> Reporter: THAT'S WHERE
EXPERTS BEGIN TO DISAGREE.
MANY QUESTION CIVIL
PREPAREDNESS, BRINGING A PULSE
THAT COULD TAKE OUT THE INTERNET
AND PUBLIC INFRASTRUCTURE SUCH
AS WATER AND SEWER PLANTS.
MURRAY BREWSTER, CBC NEWS
OTTAWA.
>> Adrienne: STILL ON PARLIAMENT
HILL, THE OPPOSITION LAUNCHED
ITS STRONGEST ATTACK YET AGAINST
THE FEDERAL FINANCE MINISTER.
THE CONSERVATIVES HAVE BEEN
HAMMERING BILL MORNEAU OVER
PERSONAL FINANCES.
WHY THEY'RE CALLING FOR MORNEAU
TO RESIGN OR BE FIRED.
(applause)
>> Reporter: IT'S BEEN BUILDING
TO THIS FOR MONTHS.
>> WILL THE FINANCE MINISTER DO
THE RIGHT THING AND RESIGN.
>> Reporter: BUT BILL MORNEAU IS
NOT GOING ANYWHERE.
>> Prime Minister Justin
Trudeau: I HAVE FULL CONFIDENCE
IN THE MINISTER OF FINANCE AND
ONE ONLY HAS TO LOOK AT THE HALF
A MILLION NEW JOBS TO UNDERSTAND
WHY.
>> Reporter: THIS LATEST
OPPOSITION ATTACK AMOUNTS TO AN
ACCUSATION OF INSIDER TRADING.
ON NOVEMBER 30TH OF 2015
SOMEBODY SOLD 680,000 SHARES OF
MORNEAU CHAPPELLE STOCK WORTH
$10 MILLION AND THEN TABLED A
BILL TO RAISE TAXES ON THE RICH
THAT CONSERVATIVES SAY CAUSED
THE STOCK MARKET TO TUMBLE,
INCLUDING THE SHARES THAT LOST
ABOUT $500,000 IN VALUE, SELLING
EARLY AVOIDED THE LOSS.
>> THERE ARE NO SECRETS HERE.
WHEN I CAME INTO OFFICE, I SOLD
SOME SHARES.
>> Reporter: MORNEAU ADMITS HE
SOLD SHARES BUT DENIED DOING IT
TO AVOID THE TAX HIT THE
LIBERALS PROMISED DURING THE
ELECTION.
>> Prime Minister Justin
Trudeau: WE CAMPAIGNED ON THAT
PROMISE MR. SPEAKER.
>> WHEN WILL THE PRIME MINISTER
DO THE RIGHT THING AND FIRE THIS
INCOMPETENT MINISTER.
>> Reporter: THE ATTACK HAS BEEN
PERSISTENT BUT NOT CONSISTENT.
INSIDE THE HOUSE WHERE M.P.s
CAN'T BE SUED A KEY PHRASE COMES
UP.
>> INSIDER TRADING.
>> INSIDER TRADING.
>> Reporter: BUT THEY AVOIDED
SAYING IT OUTSIDE THE HOUSE
WHERE THEY CAN BE SUED INSISTING
THEY WANT ANSWERS.
>> THIS IS THE FINANCE MINISTER
WHO REFUSED TO ANSWER SIMPLE
QUESTIONS.
>> Reporter: SO IT'S MEANT BY
CRIES OF COWARDICE.
>> HE SHOULD SAY WHAT HE MEANS,
SAY IT HERE, SAY IT NOW AND THEN
GO OUT THERE AND SAY IT AGAIN.
>> Reporter: IN OTHER WORDS
LET'S TAKE IT OUTSIDE.
DAVID COCHRANE, CBC NEWS OTTAWA.
>> Adrienne: CANADA HAS A NEW
SUPREME COURT JUSTICE, THE PRIME
MINISTER ANNOUNCED THE
APPOINTMENT OF SHEILA MARTIN
TODAY.
SOME ARE DISAPPOINTED HE DIDN'T
CHOOSE AN INDIGENOUS CANDIDATE,
SHE MAINTAINS THAT EVEN GENDER
BALANCE ON THE BENCH.
>> Prime Minister Justin
Trudeau: SHE'S GOING TO BE A
GREAT VOICE ON THE SUPREME
COURT.
>> Adrienne: JUSTICE MARTIN
BRINGS A PROGRESSIVE MIND SET
AND DECADES OF LEGAL EXPERIENCE.
ACADEMIC, PRACTICING LAWYER AND
A JUDGE, PRO BONO WORK FOR THE
WOMEN'S LEGAL ACTION FUND.
SHE WORKED ON THE INDIAN
COMPENSATION.
AND SHE ISSUED CANADA'S FIRST
APPROVAL FOR A PERSON REQUESTING
A MEDICALLY ASSISTING DEATH,
THAT'S A RULING THAT APPLIES NOW
ACROSS THE COUNTRY.
>> Andrew: STILL AHEAD ON "THE
NATIONAL" IT COULD BE A
TURBULENT HOLIDAY SEASON FOR
AMERICAN AIRLINES, SCRAMBLING TO
FIND ENOUGH PILOTS TO COVER THE
FLIGHTS.
>> Adrienne: INDIGENOUS MOTHERS
IN QUÉBEC ARE SHARING
HEARTBREAKING STORIES FROM
DECADES AGO, CHILDREN TAKEN AWAY
FOR MEDICAL TREATMENT AND NEVER
RETURNED.
>> Ian: AND CBC NEWS EXCLUSIVE
WITH RADIOHEAD ABOUT THE CONCERT
THAT KILLED A CREW MEMBER.
>> Interview: I CAN'T
PERSONALLY, I CAN'T LET THIS
LIE.
I WANT TO SEE
SFOET
*
>> Andrew: AMERICAN AIRLINES IS
SCRAMBLING TO FIX A MISTAKE THAT
COULD CAUSE CHAOS OVER THE
HOLIDAY SEASON, THE AIRLINE SAYS
A COMPUTER GLITCH ALLOWED TOO
MANY PILOTS TO TAKE VACATION
DAYS AND NOW THERE ARE MORE THAN
15,000 FLIGHTS WITH NO ONE TO
ACTUALLY FLY THEM.
THE AIRLINE IS REACHING OUT TO
THE PILOTS TO TRY TO CONVINCE
THEM TO PICK THE SHIFTS BACK UP.
>>> ALSO TONIGHT, INVESTIGATORS
ARE TRYING TO FIGURE OUT HOW A
CONVICTED WAR CRIMINAL WAS ABLE
TO SMUGGLE WHAT APPEARED TO BE
POISON INTO A U.N. COURTROOM.
(Voice of Translator): STOP
PLEASE, PLEASE SIT DOWN.
(End of Translation)
>> Andrew: THAT HAPPENED AFTER
THE JUDGE UPHELD THE WAR CRIMES
FOR THE BOSNIAN WAR.
HE DIED LATER IN HOSPITAL.
IT'S UNCLEAR WHAT HE DRANK OR
WHERE HE GOT IT FROM, BUT AN
INVESTIGATION IS UNDERWAY.
(bell rings)
>>> A SEA OF WORSHIPPERS IN
MYANMAR, NO DIRECT MENTION OF
THE ROHINGYA PEOPLE, 600,000 OF
WHOM HAVE HAD TO FLEE BUT SPOKE
OF ETHNIC RIGHTS AND CONDEMNED
VIOLENCE.
HE WILL TRAVEL TO BANGLADESH AND
EXPECTED TO MEET A SMALL GROUP
OF ROHINGYA REFUGEES.
>> Ian: AN EVENT THAT STILL
HAUNTS ONE OF THE WORLD'S
BIGGEST BANDS.
*
THAT IS RADIOHEAD PERFORMING
COACHELLA, JUST A FEW DAYS
LATER, THEIR TOUR WOULD END IN
TRAGEDY.
*
THE TRAGIC END TO RADIOHEAD'S
BIGGEST NORTH AMERICAN TOUR IN
YEARS WAS HERE IN CANADA,
TORONTO WITH A DEADLY STAGE
COLLAPSE.
AFTER FIVE YEARS, ATTEMPTS TO
HOLD ANYONE RESPONSIBLE HAS GONE
NOWHERE.
AS PART OF AN INTENSIVE CBC
INVESTIGATION INTO WORK PLACE
FATALITIES, DETAILS THAT HAVE
NEVER BEEN HEARD BEFORE.
>> Reporter: CREWS WERE SETTING
UP THE STAGE AHEAD OF THE
CONCERT.
>> Interview: WE HAD WHAT
SOUNDED LIKE ENORMOUS FALLING
OVER.
>> Reporter: MINUTES BEFORE THE
GATES OPENED, THE TOP CAME
CRASHING DOWN.
>> Interview: WE COULD SEE SCOTT
LYING UNDER A PIECE OF
EQUIPMENT.
>> Reporter: TORONTO WAS THE
LAST STOP ON THE ENGLISH BAND'S
TOUR.
33-YEAR-OLD DRUM TECH SCOTT
JOHNSON WAS CRUSHED TO DEATH.
>> Interview: SOMETHING THAT WAS
MEANT TO BRING, YOU KNOW, A LOT
OF JOY THAT EVENING JUST
RESULTED IN THE DEATH OF SCOTT.
>> Reporter: SCOTT JOHNSON WAS
IN DEMAND, WORKING FOR SEVERAL
BANDS INCLUDING RADIOHEAD.
HE HAD BEEN WITH THE BAND
ROUGHLY TWO YEARS AND BOARDED
THE PLANE FOR THE 2012 NORTH
AMERICAN TOUR.
IT WAS AN ELABORATE SPECTACLE,
BY THE TIME IT HIT CANADA IT WAS
A WELL OILED MACHINE.
AN INTENSE LIGHT SHOW WITH
SUSPENSIONS IN THE AIR WEIGHING
SOME 30,000 KILOGRAMS.
BENEATH IT ALL, ONE OF THE BEST
DRUMMERS IN THE WORLD.
DEATH, ESPECIALLY A DEATH
WITHOUT ANSWERS HAS A WAY OF
BRINGING PEOPLE TOGETHER.
IN A COUNTRY CHURCH YARD, A ROCK
STAR AND GRIEVING FATHER PAY
RESPECTS.
*
IT'S BEEN FIVE YEARS SINCE KEN
JOHNSON LOST HIS SON AND IN THAT
TIME, NO CONVICTIONS, NO FINES
AND NO ANSWERS OF HOW IT
HAPPENED.
>> Interview: WHEN SOMETHING WAS
DRY IT WAS PROPER.
>> Reporter: IT'S BEEN TOO HARD
FOR KEN'S WIFE SUE TO TALK
PUBLICLY ABOUT THE LOSS OF THEIR
ONLY CHILD UNTIL NOW.
>> Interview: I DIDN'T WORRY
THAT -- I FEEL SO LET DOWN BY
CANADA.
I REALLY DO.
>> Reporter: THE JOHNSON'S FEEL
ROBBED OF JUSTICE BUT STILL HAVE
THEIR MEMORIES.
>> Interview: HE WOULD GET ON
SKYPE AND STICK HIS LAPTOP OUT
AND STICK AROUND WHEREVER HE
WAS, YOU KNOW.
>> Interview: HE LOVED HIS WORK.
>> Interview: HE WAS HAPPY.
>> Interview: HE WAS DOING
SOMETHING HE ABSOLUTELY LOVED.
>> Interview: YEAH.
YEAH.
(SIRENS)
>> Reporter: IN LOS ANGELES, THE
BRITISH ROCK WORLD GO TO MANAGER
RICHARD YOUNG, TOURING WITH
EVERYONE FROM ADELE TO NINE INCH
NAILS UNDER HIS BELT.
HE REMEMBERS RESERVATION AMONG
THE CREW THAT DAY IN TORONTO.
>> Interview: THERE WAS A
FEELING, A CONVERSATION ABOUT
WELL, THIS IS -- THIS
TECHNOLOGY IS OLD, THIS
EQUIPMENT IS OLD, IT'S BEEN A
LONG TIME SINCE WE PLAYED ON
THIS KIND OF STAGE.
>> Reporter: LIVE NATION IS THE
WORLD'S LARGEST LIVE
ENTERTAINMENT COMPANY, IT
HANDLED ALL THE VENUE
ARRANGEMENTS FOR THE TOUR AND
HIRED A LOCAL ONTARIO BUSINESS
OPTIC STAGING TO CONSTRUCT THE
STAGE.
OPTICS CONTRACTED AN ENGINEER TO
DRAW THE PLANS FOR THE STAGE OF
THE VENUE.
>> Interview: SOMEWHERE IN THAT
TRIANGLE, ACCOUNTABILITY LIES.
>> Reporter: RADIOHEAD'S
INSURANCE COMPANY HIRED A
FORENSIC ENGINEER TO HELP FIND
ANSWERS.
>> Interview: THESE ARE USED BY
MEMBERS OF THE CREW.
YOU CAN SEE THIS ONE HAS BEEN
CRUSHED.
>> Reporter: METAL BUILT TO
WITHSTAND THOUSANDS OF POUNDS OF
PRESSURE, BUCKLED AND BENT.
>> Interview: SO THIS STRUCTURE
WAS A MULTI POINT LOADED
TEMPORARY STRUCTURE.
AND WHEN YOU LOOK AT THE
AVAILABLE EXISTING CODES AND
STANDARDS IN CANADA, THERE ISN'T
ACTUALLY ONE THAT RELATES
SPECIFICALLY FOR TEMPORARY
STRUCTURES OF THAT TYPE.
>> Reporter: TYPICALLY ENGINEERS
DESIGN THE STRUCTURES TO HANDLE
TWO TO FOUR TIMES MORE WEIGHT
THAN NEEDED.
THAT BEGS THE QUESTION...
>> Interview: WAS THE STRUCTURE
AS BUILT THE SAME AS WHAT WAS
INTENDED IN THE DESIGN
SPECIFICATIONS.
>> Reporter: IT TOOK A FULL YEAR
FOR THE MINISTRY OF LABOUR TO
FINISH AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE
COLLAPSE AND FINDINGS WERE NOT
PUBLICLY RELEASED.
THE MINISTRY OF LABOUR TOLD CBC
NEWS IF WE WANTED TO SEE THE
REPORT WE WOULD HAVE TO FILE AN
INFORMATION OF FREEDOM REQUEST,
WE DID, AND WE'RE STILL WORKING.
>> Interview: THERE ARE SOME
CAREERS OUT THERE WHERE YOU PUT
YOURSELF IN HARM'S WAY.
THE ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY
SHOULDN'T PUT ANYBODY IN HARM'S
WAY.
>> Reporter: HE FEELS A HEAVY
BURDEN, FOR THE FIRST TIME
REVEALING THERE WAS A DIFFERENT
LINE UP THAT DAY.
>> Interview: WHEN THE COLLAPSE
HAPPENED, IT HAPPENED AT 4:00 IN
THE AFTERNOON.
OUR SOUND CHECK WAS DUE TO START
AT 4:00 AND I ACTUALLY SHOULD
HAVE BEEN WHERE SCOTT WAS.
AND THAT IS AN INCREDIBLE WEIGHT
AND I CAN'T PERSONALLY, I CAN'T
LET THIS LIE.
>> Reporter: IN 2013, ONE YEAR
AFTER THE COLLAPSE, LIVE NATION,
OPTIC STAGING AND THE ENGINEER
WERE CHARGED WITH 13 OFFENCES
UNDER THE OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH
AND SAFETY LAWS.
ALL THREE PLEADED NOT GUILTY.
BUT LIKE THE STAGE, THE CASE
AGAINST THE THREE WOULD ALSO
COLLAPSE.
THE CASE WAS IN ITS THIRD YEAR
WHEN SOMETHING UNUSUAL HAPPENED.
WITH JUST THREE DAYS LEFT IN THE
TRIAL, THE PROCEEDING JUDGE WAS
APPOINTED TO FEDERAL COURT.
HE DECIDED HE NO LONGER HAD
JURISDICTION AND DECLARED A
MISTRIAL.
THIS PAST SEPTEMBER, A FULL FIVE
YEARS AFTER THE COLLAPSE, THE
JUDGE WHO TOOK HIS PLACE RULED
IN FAVOUR OF THE DETECTIVE'S
APPLICATION TO HAVE THE CASE
DROPPED UNDER THE JORDAN RULING
WHICH SETS STRICT TIMELINES TO
ENSURE SPEEDY TRIALS.
ALL 13 CHARGES WERE STAYED.
THE NEWS WAS DEVASTATING FOR THE
JOHNSON'S WHO CAN'T WRAP THEIR
HEAD AROUND THE FACT THAT AFTER
FIVE YEARS, THERE ARE STILL NO
ANSWERS.
>> Interview: THEY SEEM TO HAVE
FORGOTTEN SCOTT IN ALL THIS.
IT'S ALMOST AS IF THEY TRIED
THEIR BEST TO DELAY AND DELAY TO
TRY TO GET THEMSELVES OFF WITH
THE CHARGES.
THEY SEEM TO FORGET THAT SCOTT
LOST HIS LIFE BECAUSE SOMEBODY
MADE A MISTAKE.
>> Interview: WE WANT JUSTICE TO
BE DONE, YOU EXPECT, YOU KNOW, A
COURT CASE TO FIND OUT WHAT
HAPPENED FOR ANYBODY WHO HAS ANY
PART IN IT TO ACCEPT
RESPONSIBILITY AND MEASURES TO
BE TAKEN.
>> Reporter: NO ONE HAS HAD TO
FACE THE MUSIC FOR ANY ROLE IN
SCOTT JOHNSON'S DEATH BUT
RADIOHEAD PROMISES TO SHINE A
SPOTLIGHT ON IT UNTIL IT
CHANGES.
>> Ian: CBC NEWS HAS LEARNED
TOMORROW AS RESULT OF HEIGHTENED
INTEREST IN THE CASE, ONTARIO
WILL CALL AN INQUIRY INTO THE
RADIOHEAD STAGE COLLAPSE.
IT COMES AS A RESULT OF CBC NEWS
INVESTIGATION INTO ABOUT 250
CASES OF WORK PLACE FATALITIES
IN CANADA.
WE'LL HAVE EXTENSIVE COVERAGE ON
TELEVISION, RADIO AND ONLINE
TOMORROW.
AMONG THE FINDINGS, SOME
SOBERING NUMBERS, FOR INSTANCE,
MAXIMUM FINES ARE RARELY IMPOSED
ON EMPLOYERS AFTER SOMEONE DIES
ON THE JOB.
THE MEDIAN FINE $97,500.
THERE ARE POTENTIALLY STIFF
PENALTIES FOR CRIMINAL LIABILITY
BUT CBC FOUND ONLY FIVE
EMPLOYERS WHO HAVE SERVED JAIL
TIME IN CONNECTION WITH A WORK
PLACE DEATH.
>> Adrienne: STILL AHEAD ON "THE
NATIONAL" A STORY OF LOST
INDIGENOUS CHILDREN.
DECADES AGO IN NORTHERN QUÉBEC,
CHILDREN WERE ROUTINELY TAKEN TO
SOUTHERN HOSPITALS FOR MEDICAL
CARE AND MANY NEVER RETURNED.
WE INVESTIGATE WHAT HAPPENED TO
THEM NEXT.
>> Ian: WELCOME BACK.
IAN HANOMANSING HERE IN STUDIO
DURING A BREAK AND THOSE
WATCHING US ON Facebook LIVE,
TWITTER AND youtube, I'M HERE TO
ANSWER SOME OF YOUR QUESTIONS.
YOU CAN SEND THEM IN ON Facebook
AND TWITTER AND WE RECEIVED A
WIDE RANGE OF QUESTIONS ALREADY.
FOR EXAMPLE, HISTORIC WARDROBE
QUESTION, DID YOU WEAR A CHARLIE
BROWN PATTERN SHIRT ONCE, I
CAN'T STOP THINKING ABOUT IT.
IT'S POSSIBLE.
I'VE BEEN DOING THE JOB FOR 30
YEARS AND WORN A LOT OF BAD
CLOTHES AND HAD A LOT OF BAD
HAIR.
ALMOST CERTAINLY YES AND QUITE
POSSIBLY MORE RECENTLY THAN I
CARE TO REMEMBER.
THAT ONE BY THE WAY CARLA ON
TWITTER.
THIS ONE FROM JOSEPH, WILL YOU
TRAVEL THE COUNTRY WITH THE
SHOW?
WE ALREADY KIND OF TRAVEL THE
COUNTRY, WE HAVE ROSEMARY FROM
OTTAWA WATCHING AT HOME.
ANDREW IN VANCOUVER AND ADRIENNE
AND I HERE.
WE DO HOPE TO TRAVEL AS
REPORTERS IN THE FIELD DOING
STORIES AND WHAT I WOULD LOVE TO
DO IS BE ABLE TO GO TO HALIFAX
LET'S SAY WHEN AN INTERESTING
STORY IS INI HAPPENING THERE, HAVE
TOM MURPHY DO A STORY AND TALK
TO PEOPLE THERE.
AND OTHER ANCHORS CAN BE ON BASE
AND WE CAN RUN IN FOR A DAY AND
DO A STORY AND THEN LEAVE.
I HOPE TO DO THAT.
RIGHT THERE ADRIENNE IS
APPARENTLY TRYING TO FIX HER
COMPUTER.
I DON'T QUITE KNOW WHAT IS GOING
ON.
IT MAKES IT DIFFICULT TO DO MY
JOB.
WHAT ELSE DO WE HAVE HERE?
RAY ON TWITTER HAD A QUESTION
ABOUT THE BIGGEST SURPRISE ON
THE SHOW.
WE ADDRESSED THAT IN THE LAST
BREAK.
ALTHOUGH I WOULD ADD THAT THE
LONG HOURS ARE KIND OF
SURPRISING.
ADRIENNE AND I FOR EXAMPLE, SAME
THING FOR ROSEMARY -- HOW MUCH
TIME.
CAN WE TAKE THE WIDE SHOT AGAIN,
THIS IS THE MOST FASCINATING
THING AND IT'S JUST THE
COMPUTER.
WE GET HERE FOR A 9:30 MEETING
AND PRETTY WELL STAY UNTIL 11:15
OR SO.
THAT WAS EXCITING FOR THE FIRST
COUPLE OF DAYS.
I KEEP SAYING TOMORROW CAN YOU
COME LATER AND SHE DOESN'T.
IT'S A RACE TO THE BOTTOM, ONE
OF US IS WAITING FOR THE OTHER
TO COLLAPSE OR WORK NORMAL
HOURS.
THAT'S KIND OF A SURPRISE.
LET'S SEE WHAT ELSE WE HAVE HERE
IN TERMS OF QUESTIONS.
DON'T YOU WISH WE WERE DOING
THIS LIVE ON THE AIR EVERY
NIGHT?
ANGUS SAYS HOW IS THE MULTI HOST
FORMAT WORKING SO FAR FOR THE
FOUR OF YOU?
IT'S SO DIFFERENT FROM ANYTHING
THAT I'M USED TO.
I HAVE HAD CO-ANCHORS BEFORE,
GLORIA MACARENKO AND I WORKED
TOGETHER FOR YEARS, I HAVE DONE
SOLO ANCHORING AS WELL.
FOUR IS A LOT DIFFERENT.
I SAID THIS IN A MEETING WE HAD,
IT'S LIKE HAVING FOUR POINT
GUARDS ON THE COURT AT THE SAME
TIME, ALL OF US ARE USED TO
CARRYING THE BALL UP THE COURT
AND NOW WE HAVE TO SHARE IT.
SO FAR WE'RE DOING A GOOD JOB.
ADRIENNE?
>> Adrienne: I THINK WE'RE OKAY.
>> Ian: I THINK YOU CAN TELL WE
GET ALONG WELL.
>> Adrienne: WE HAVE KNOWN EACH
OTHER FOR LITERALLY 25 YEARS.
>> Ian: I DIDN'T KNOW ANDREW 25
YEARS, HE WAS IN GRADE THREE.
ANYTHING ELSE?
SOMEBODY NAMED ROB HAS A
QUESTION, WHAT CHANGES HAVE MADE
THE FORMAT?
A SMART GUY TONY WHO USED TO
WORK HERE SAID DAY TWO WILL BE
DIFFERENT THAN DAY ONE AND --
I'M GETTING A COUNT HERE FIVE
SECONDS.
NEXT TIME WE'LL TALK ABOUT THE
>> Adrienne: FOR MEMBERS OF THE
FIRST NATION IN REMOTE NORTHERN
QUÉBEC, LIFE RESOLVES AROUND
FAMILY, BUT FOR SOME THAT
CLOSENESS WAS SHATTERED FOREVER
IN THE 70S.
WHEN CHILDREN WHO NEEDED MEDICAL
ATTENTION WERE ROUTINELY SENT TO
MEDICAL HOSPITALS AND NEVER TO
BE SEEN AGAIN.
OUR COLLEAGUES AT RADIO CANADA
INVESTIGATED THE DECADES OLD
MYSTERY TO FIND OUT WHAT
HAPPENED TO THE MISSING CHILDREN
AND HOW THE DISAPPEARANCE
AFFECTED THOSE WHO WERE LEFT
BEHIND.
JUSTIN HAYWARD HAS ONE FAMILY'S
STORY.
>> Reporter: IN NORTHERN QUÉBEC,
A FAMILY REUNION OF SORTS.
FROM A VILLAGE HUNDREDS OF
KILOMETRES NORTH OF ST. LAWRENCE
RIVER.
WHEN SHE SPEAKS, HER DAUGHTERS
TRANSLATE.
I HAD 15 CHILDREN SHE SAYS AND I
TOOK CARE OF THEM ALL BUT
DEANNE.
DEANNE DEVELOPED PNEUMONIA AND
WAS TAKEN TO HOSPITAL HUNDREDS
OF KILOMETRES AWAY FROM THE
VILLAGE AND NEVER CAME BACK.
EVERY TIME THEY LEFT TO GO TO
TOWN FOR SUPPLIES SHE WOULD ASK
WAS HAPPENED TO HER DAUGHTER.
FORGET YOUR DAUGHTER SHE WAS
TOLD, YOU HAVE OTHER CHILDREN.
IN THOSE YEARS THE COMMUNITIES
WERE ISOLATED, COULD TAKE DAYS
TO REACH A CITY.
EVENTUALLY THE FAMILY GOT HOLD
OF A DOCUMENT FROM SOCIAL
SERVICES MARKED CHILD PLACEMENT
AND SAID THE DAUGHTER WAS
ABANDONED BY HER PARENTS AND
BABY DEANNE WAS PLACED WITH A
WHITE FAMILY WITHOUT CONSENT.
SHE REMEMBERS SIGNING A PAPER
BUT THE LOCAL PRIEST SAID IT WAS
SO THE CHILD COULD GET MEDICAL
CARE.
THAT'S NOT THE SAME SHE SAYS.
RADIO CANADA PROGRAMME FOUND
FAMILY AFTER FAMILY WITH SIMILAR
STORIES.
DEANNE BELIVEAU WAS A SOCIAL
WORKER IN THE AREA IN THE 70S.
CHILDREN WERE OFTEN HANDED OVER
TO CHILD PROTECTION AUTHORITIES
FOR NO JUSTIFIABLE REASON SHE
SAYS.
FOR INSTANCE WHEN THE DOCTOR
FELT THE CHILD NEEDED
PROTECTION.
MANY NEVER RETURNED BUT
INCREDIBLY DEANNE DID, SHE MET
HER BROTHERS AND SISTERS FOR THE
FIRST TIME AND ANOTHER SURPRISE.
THEY INTRODUCED ME TO MY TWIN
BROTHER SHE SAYS.
FOR DEANNE, THE HOMECOMING IS
INCOMPLETE, SHE NEVER LEARNED
THE LANGUAGE OR CULTURE.
SOMETHING IS MISSING IN ME SHE
SAYS.
SOMETHING LOST I WILL NEVER GET
BACK.
LIKE SO MANY OTHERS WHO NEVER
RETURN.

>> Andrew: AFTER A BLEAK FEW
YEARS, THERE'S SO MUCH DRILLING
HAPPENING IN A SMALL ALBERTA
TOWN, SOME SAY THEY CAN'T KEEP
UP WITH THE WORK.
WE'LL GO THERE NEXT ON "THE
NATIONAL."
SOUNDS LIKE YOU'RE WORKING A LOT
MORE THAN YOU WERE TWO YEARS
AGO.
>> LAST YEAR AT THIS TIME IT WAS
REALLY, REALLY QUIET.
WE WERE REALLY STRUGGLING, WE
WERE HAVING A HARD TIME GETTING
ENOUGH ROOMS TO KEEP
HOUSEKEEPERS BUSY AND KEEP
PEOPLE EMPLOYED.
THIS YEAR OUR HOUSEKEEPERS ARE
TIRED AT THIS POINT.
>> Andrew: WHEN IT COMES TO THE
OIL INDUSTRY, ALBERTA HAS SEEN
SHARES OF UP'S AND DOWN'S,
TOMORROW ALL EYES ON VIENNA,
TALKING ABOUT HOW TO KEEP OIL
PRICES UP, A WELCOMED
CONVERSATION FOR A PROVINCE THAT
HAS BEEN DOWN IN THE DUMPS.
A RECOVERY HAS BEEN UNDERWAY
THOUGH.
ALBERTA NOW LEADS THE COUNTRY IN
GDP GROWTH.
OILVILLE HAS TICKED UP AND FEWER
PEOPLE ARE OUT OF WORK AND AT
THE HEART OF THIS, DEVELOPMENTS
OF A MASSIVE PIECE OF LAND
COVERING ABOUT A FIFTH OF THE
PROVINCE, AND UNDERGROUND,
AROUND 3.4 BILLION BARRELS OF
CRUDE AND 6.3 BILLION BARRELS OF
WHAT ARE CALLED NATURAL GAS
LIQUIDS AND AT THE HEART OF ALL
THAT, ROCKY MOUNTAIN HOUSE, A
PLACE THAT HAS GONE FROM BOOM TO
BUST TO BOOM AGAIN.
WE SENT AARON COLLIN TO SEE HOW
IT HAS HELPED THE TOWN MAKE A
COMEBACK.
>> Reporter: THE TRAFFIC IS BACK
IN ROCKY MOUNTAIN HOUSE.
>> Interview: IN MID SPRING, THE
CAMPGROUNDS STARTED GETTING
PACKED WITH OIL AND GAS WORKERS
AND THEN THE TRUCKS STARTED
COMING IN AND END OF SUMMER,
IT'S BEEN FILLED WITH TRUCKS.
SO WE'RE GOING TO GO AHEAD RIGHT
NOW ON THE BORDER OF THE TOWN
AND COUNTY WHERE THE TRUCKS COME
IN.
>> Reporter: WHEN PEOPLE ARE
TALKING ABOUT THE ECONOMY IN
ALBERTA RIGHT NOW, YOU'RE
HEARING, YOU KNOW, ABOUT THE
DOWN TIMES BUT IT SEEMS THE DOWN
TIMES ARE OVER, IS TBOOM BACK
HERE?
>> Interview: WHEN YOU'RE
DRIVING ON 11, THE MAJOR
CORRIDOR TO LINK TO THE OIL
COUNTRY, THE AMOUNT OF EQUIPMENT
ON HIGHWAY 11 IT'S HARD TRYING
TO DRIVE BEHIND ALL THE
EQUIPMENT.
>> Reporter: LIKE THE ROADS
HERE, HOTELS AND RESTAURANTS ARE
JAMMED AGAIN.
>> Interview: WE'RE JUST IN A
LUCKY AREA.
>> Reporter: ABSOLUTELY.
THANK YOU.
I'M GREAT.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH.
DO YOU THINK THIS IS A SIGN OF
TINGES TO COME FOR THE REST OF
THE PROVINCE?
>> Interview: I SURE WOULD LIKE
TO KEEP MY FINGERS CROSSED THAT
IT IS.
THE ONLY PROBLEM IS WITH THIS
INDUSTRY, IT'S SO UNPREDICTABLE.
YOU JUST KEEP YOUR FINGERS
CROSSED THAT IT WILL LAST AS
LONG AS IT CAN.
>> Reporter: ALL THAT ACTIVITY
HAS LOCAL COMPANIES SCRAMBLING
TO HIRE AGAIN.
SO WHEN DID THINGS TURN THE
CORNER?
>> Interview: WE NOTICED THINGS
START TO PICK UP, THE OIL FIELD
SIDE OF THINGS MORE THIS SPRING.
NOW WE'RE FLAT OUT THINGS ARE
FLYING.
>> Reporter: AND THIS HAS TO DO
WITH PEOPLE INTERESTED IN THE
NEW SITE.
>> Interview: IT'S BEEN THE
FOCAL POINT FOR US AS A BUSINESS
TO GET THROUGH IT AND KEEP OUR
PEOPLE GOING.
>> Reporter: YOU MENTION PEOPLE,
YOU KNOW, YOU'RE HIRING AGAIN.
>> Interview: ABSOLUTELY.
>> Reporter: IT'S ALL WELCOMED
NEWS FOR THOSE ITCHING TO GET
BACK TO WORK.
YOU WORK SEVEN DAYS A WEEK?
>> Interview: YEP.
>> Reporter: THAT'S THE ALBERTA
WAY.
>> Interview: YEP, DO WHAT YOU
GOT TO DO, PAY THE BILLS.
>> Reporter: SO WERE YOU WORKING
SEVEN DAYS A WEEK TWO YEARS AGO?
>> Interview: NO.
I WAS TWO, SOMETIMES THREE,
POSSIBLY FOUR -- BASICALLY
DEPENDING ON THE WEATHER.
>> Reporter: SOUNDS LIKE YOU'RE
WORKING TWICE AS MUCH THESE DAYS
THAN YOU WERE A COUPLE YEARS
AGO.
>> Interview: OH, YEAH, YEAH.
SEVEN DAYS A WEEK.
10-12 HOURS A DAY.
>> Reporter: WOW.
WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO WITH
ALL THAT MONEY?
>> Interview: BUY A HOUSE.
>> Reporter: WITH OIL FLIRTING
WITH $60 A BARREL, THE HOPE IS
THAT THE DAYS OF JUST SCRAPING
BY COULD SOON BE OVER HERE.
AARON COLLINS, CBC NEWS ROCKY
MOUNTAIN HOUSE ALBERTA.
>> Adrienne: WE HAVE MORE AHEAD
TONIGHT BUT AS WE GO TO BREAK WE
HAVE LEARNED THAT ANTHONY
CARBAJAL HAS DIED.
YOU MAY NOT HAVE HEARD OF HIM
BUT HE WAS AT THE HEART OF AN
ONLINE PHENOMENON HARD TO MISS.
THE ICE BUCKET CHALLENGE.
>> I'M CALLING OUT JANETTE --
>> Adrienne: THAT WAS CHRIS
KENNEDY CALLING OUT ANTHONY
CARBAJAL'S WIFE.
>> YOU HAVE TO DONATE IF YOU
DON'T RESPOND IN 24-HOURS.
HERE WE GO.
GOOD LUCK GUYS.
>> Adrienne: THAT WAS THE MOMENT
THAT AN INTERNET DARE BECAME A
HISTORIC AWARENESS CAMPAIGN.
THE CHALLENGE SPREAD LIKE A
SUPERNOVA ALL IN THE NAME OF
SUPPORTING ALS RESEARCH.
ATHLETES AND CELEBRITIES STARTED
DUNKING, DARING AND DONATING.
IN THE SPACE OF WEEKS,
2.5 MILLION PEOPLE MADE
DONATIONS, POURING MORE THAN
$100 MILLION INTO ALS CHARITIES.
ANTHONY CARBAJAL, THE MAN WHO
STARTED IT ALL BATTLED THE
DISEASE FOR 14 YEARS UNTIL HIS
DEATH A FEW DAYS AGO AT
>> Andrew: A VICTORY CRY IN A
SOLDOUT CROWD AS TORONTO FC
ADVANCES.
THE FINAL WILL BE HELD IN
TORONTO ON DECEMBER 9.
ALSO TONIGHT, HOW HIGH CAN
BITCOIN GO?
IT SHOT PAST 11,000 PER COIN AND
THEN TUMBLED DOWN TO 9,300.
AS FAR AS DIGITAL CURRENCIES GO,
IT'S ANYTHING BUT STABLE, SOME
SAY.
AND SOME THINK IT'S A BUBBLE
WAITING TO BURST.
>> WE DON'T HAVE THE MONEY TO
SPARE.
>> NO ONE HAS BEEN RICHER THAN
YOU AT THIS MOMENT.
WHAT WOULD IT TAKE FOR YOU TO
FEEL SECURE?
>> MORE.
>> Andrew: THAT'S CHRISTOPHER
PLUMMER IN WHAT USED TO BE KEVIN
SPACEY'S ROLE.
NOW WASTING NO TIME, THE NEW
TRAILER CAME OUT TODAY.
THE MOVIE IS SET TO RELEASE NEXT
MONTH.
LET'S TALK ABOUT EVERYBODY'S
FAVOURITE THING -- STATISTICS
CANADA CENSUS NUMBERS.
THEY'RE JUST OUT THIS MORNING
AND ARE INTERESTING.
CANADIANS ARE MORE EDUCATED THAN
EVER.
JUST OVER HALF OF THE POPULATION
HAS AT LEAST ONE UNIVERSITY
DEGREE AND THAT'S THE HIGHEST
RATE, BY THE WAY, OF ANY
INDUSTRIALIZED COUNTRY.
IMMIGRANTS ARE A BIG PART OF
THAT, ON AVERAGE, BETTER
EDUCATED THAN THOSE
CANADIAN-BORN.
WHAT I WANTED TO SHOW YOU IS
WHERE MOST FOLKS END UP WORKING.
TAKE A LOOK AT THIS.
THESE ARE THE TOP 10 JOBS HELD
BY CANADIANS LAST YEAR, MEN AND
WOMEN.
FOR WOMEN, RETAIL WORK, FOLLOWED
BY NURSES, CASHIERS, ELEMENTARY
AND KINDERGARTEN TEACHERS AND
ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANTS.
FOR MEN, TRUCK DRIVER, RETAIL
WORKERS, MANAGERS, JANITORS,
CARETAKERS, CONSTRUCTION WORKERS
AND MECHANICS.
>> Adrienne: SO ALL THOSE
NUMBERS ARE ON OUR WEBSITE, TONS
OF THEM.
I JUST LOOKED AT ANOTHER ONE
THAT SAID TWICE AS MANY SENIORS
ARE WORKING FULL TIME NOW THAN
THEY WERE 20 YEARS AGO.
>> Ian: AND YOU WONDER IF THAT'S
BECAUSE PEOPLE ARE LIVING LONGER
AND HEALTHIER, SO THEY CAN WORK,
OR IF IT'S ABOUT THE MONEY THAT
THEY NEED TO HAVE LATE IN LIFE.
>> Andrew: AND WHAT SHOCKED ME
THE MOST, TRUCK DRIVERS IS THE
NUMBER ONE OCCUPATION FOR MEN.
THERE YOU GO.
THAT'S "THE NATIONAL" FOR
NOVEMBER 29.
GOOD NIGHT.
>> Adrienne: GOOD NIGHT.
