Waching daily Nov 29 2017

So it's this time of the year again.

Time when all you hear about is the royal wedding.

All BBC talked about yesterday was Meghan Markle and Prince Harry.

The whole front page was just about them.

I mean look at it.

They have five main headlines, the most important news, something they think you have to know

about, and 3 of these 5 were about the wedding!

And, I mean, there's nothing wrong with the coverage, but isn't it a bit too much?

Normally, I would have said "Yes," and I wish they were covering really important

stories with the same enthusiasm, for example the end of net neutrality in the United States.

How about that?

But!

In this case I'm actually surprisingly fine with it.

And here's why.

Let's take a look at the last wedding: Prince William and Catherine Middleton.

I'm not following the news about the royal family, but there's just no way to avoid

them!

And I mean it!

For example, the last time I was walking on a street and there was a live translation

of the royal wedding.

Just blasting from the loudspeakers for everyone to hear.

This is insane!

And now it's twenty-seventeen!

Why do we even have a monarchy?

Did anyone host a live public broadcast on the street of the Hilary-Trump elections?

No!

But the outcome of this event was probably bigger than the one from the royal wedding.

Yet, the wedding was all the media was talking about.

Not just the tabloids.

Everyone!

So even people who didn't really care that much, still heard about it.

And what do I know about Catherine Middleton?

She married Prince William.

She's pretty.

She gave birth to… two kids?

Okay…

Ahm…

That's… cool?

Now let's take a look at what do I know about Meghan Markle?

Given, that I still express the same amount of interest towards the royal family, which

is next to nothing.

I know that Meghan supports gender equality.

I know that she advocates for UN Women.

I know she did charity work, for example she was at a refugee camp in Rwanda…

Even though I'm not following the "Amazing Adventures of the still-existing-for-whatever-reason-monarchy"

I know these things about Meghan.

Something more than "She's pretty" and "She has kids," as the last time.

I'm not attacking Middleton, I'm pretty sure she's doing a lot of great things as

well, probably charity too.

Because, why wouldn't you do it when you have all these resources and opportunities?

Even when you don't have them, I'd still expect you to help people, at least in your

local community.

Make the world just a little bit better every day.

But unfortunately the coverage she got, or at least the one I was exposed to, was either

about the way she looked, her clothes, or about her kids.

And that's why I like the coverage right now.

Because it looks like at least some of the media started to focus on the positive and

not so shallow message, and they are focusing on her charity work and her work towards gender

equality.

And I find it great, because apparently a lot of people are interested in the royal

family, and now it's not only a reality show, but there's also a good message behind

it.

This new strong character that might inspire people with her work.

And since helping young girls is one of her goals, it looks like she actually is a good

role model.

And now, let me address the elephant in the room.

I'm talking from the perspective of someone who's not following the news.

I know these things only by accident.

I see the tip of the iceberg, and this tip, the side that I see, looks pretty good to

me.

But I know there's some controversy there, and there was a statement from Prince Harry,

talking about "fictional stories" and harassment from the press.

I know how the media can behave—or more like misbehave—sometimes.

Especially tabloids like Daily Mail.

There's even a campaign against advertising on Daily Mail with a very appropriate name

"Stop Funding Hate."

I hope that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle can deal with all of these things.

And I hope Meghan can continue her social work.

If the press—and I'm not talking about the tabloids—don't just focus on her looks

and the number of kids, but they focus on Meghan's humanitarian and feministic views,

then yeah, sure, go ahead and cover your front pages with it.

I kind of like it.
