Waching daily Jun 5 2017

(tires squealing)

- Wooooaaaahhhhh!

- How fast is fast?

Let me take you back a few minutes.

I partnered with Windows to demonstrate how fast

I can convert one of my apps to

the Windows Store using Desktop Bridge.

Because I found it so easy to

convert an app to Desktop Bridge,

I was thinking, well, what else is fast?

I do like driving fast, and a race car is really fast.

And then I thought, what better way than

to compare it to a race car?

- Road Atlanta is one of the old school tracks.

Some people like to say it was before attorneys

got involved in building tracks.

High speed, high consequence, it's very daunting

for not only the driver but, every now and then

when there's a passenger.

- The excitement is knowing that

what I'm going to develop helps children and adults

to improve their typing speed and accuracy.

This helps get themselves where they want to go faster.

It has been sold in our company for quite some years

as a native desktop app, and now we want to able to

deliver that to customers through the Windows Store

without any additional coding.

I can package my app using the Desktop Bridge,

add additional functionality and submit the package

to the Windows Store.

- You know, what appeals to me

about racing is the competitiveness.

We're going to see who finishes first,

the car or the developer.

- [Radio Operator] All yours, Andrew.

Have fun.

Three laps.

- Awesome, let's do this.

- All right.

(engine rumbles)

(tires squealing)

- [Andrew] Coming to the famous Road Atlanta downhill esses

Slide there, for you.

How about another one?

Down the back stretch here.

- [Derek] What we gettin to, come on!

- [Andrew] 120 now, I'm about to go to 5th gear, here we go.

- [Derek] Excellent.

- [Andrew] 145.

150.

- Yeah!

Yeah!

Woah.

Woohoo, that was fast!

Just about done!

Yes!

Wooo-hoo-hoo!

Yeah!

How fast?

This fast.

My name is Derek Wade, and I build for Windows.

'Why were you not advocating for teacher pay raise, education funding?' - Duration: 10:36.

>> THE REASON I BECAME A TEACHER

WAS BECAUSE OF THE PEOPLE I'VE

SURROUNDED MYSELF WITH AND THIS

COMMUNITY.

ABIGAIL: BUT THAT TEACHER, LIKE

MANY OTHERS, LEAVING THE STATE

FOR BETTER PAY.

EVEN OKLAHOMA'S 2016 TEACHER OF

THE YEAR IS LEAVING TO GO TO

TEXAS.

WE ARE CONTINUING OUR

CONVERSATION WITH STATE

SUPERINTENDANT JOY HOFMEISTER.

JUST LAST WEEK, A DISTRICT FROM

NORTH CAROLINA CAME HERE TO

RECRUIT OUR TEACHERS PROMISING

BETTER PAY.

BETTER BENEFITS.

HOW DOES THAT MAKE YOU FEEL?

THEY ARE APPROACHING OUR

TEACHERS.

>> IT IS HEARTBREAKING AND

UNDERSTANDABLE.

WE HAVE AMONG THE BEST TEACHERS.

IT IS NO WONDER OTHER STATES AND

DISTRICTS OUTSIDE OKLAHOMA ARE

RECRUITING THOSE TOP TALENT AND

WONDERFULLY TALENTED

PROFESSIONALS HERE.

WE UNDERSTAND, TOO, THAT

TEACHERS WERE HOLDING ON FIRST

TO SEE IF STATE QUESTION 779

WOULD PASS.

THAT WOULD HAVE GIVEN AN

IMMEDIATE $5,000

ACROSS-THE-BOARD PAY RAISE.

THE VOTERS OF OKLAHOMA SAID NO.

THEY WANTED THE LEGISLATURE TO

MAKE THAT CHANGE, AND THAT WAS

SOMETHING THAT THE LEGISLATURE

WAS UNABLE TO DO THIS SESSION.

IT IS HEARTBREAKING, BECAUSE

THIS IS A PROBLEM AFFECTING

KIDS.

TEACHERS ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT

PEOPLE IN A SCHOOLHOUSE

AFFECTING POSITIVE, HIGHER

ACADEMIC OUTCOMES FOR KIDS.

THAT IS WHY IT WILL REMAIN A TOP

PRIORITY FOR ME.

WE MUST HAVE COMPETITIVE PAY TO

KEEP AND ATTRACT GREAT PEOPLE.

ABIGAIL: YOU ARE AN EDUCATOR FOR

A LONG TIME.

NOW A SUPERINTENDENT.

WOULD YOU WANT TO BE A TEACHER

IN OKLAHOMA?

>> ABSOLUTELY, YES.

I'M COMMITTED TO THE CHILDREN OF

OKLAHOMA.

THE PEOPLE WHO ARE ABLE TO STAY

ARE HERE, COMMITTED, AND WITH

EVER-EXEMPLARY DEDICATION TO THE

CHILDREN AND THE CRISIS WE HAVE.

THEY WANT TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE.

WE HAVE TO WORK ON WHAT WE CAN

CONTROL.

THAT THE DEPARTMENT OF

EDUCATION, WE ARE UNABLE TO

GENERATE NEW REVENUE FOR

TEACHERS.

IT IS A LOCAL DECISION TO GIVE

PAY ABOVE THE STATE MINIMUM.

ABOUT HALF OF THE SCHOOLS DO,

BUT IT IS NOT ENOUGH TO BE

COMPETITIVE.

WE ARE AT THE BOTTOM AND THIS IS

NOT ACCEPTABLE.

THIS IS NO WAY TO COMPETE AND

OUR KIDS DESERVE BETTER.

ABIGAIL: THOSE TEACHERS WE

TALKED TO WERE NOT LEAVING

BECAUSE THEY WANTED A BETTER

LIFESTYLE, BUT THEY SAID, I HAVE

TO DO THIS FOR MY FAMILY.

YOU DON'T WANT TO GUILT TRIP

THEM FOR THAT, BUT

UNFORTUNATELY, YOU UNDERSTAND,

BUT WHEN YOU SEE OUR TOP

TEACHERS GOING OR GETTING

POACHED, IT SUCKS, AND BREAK

YOUR HEART.

AS WE HAVE TALKED ABOUT, THIS

BUDGET WAS JUST PASSED BY OUR

STATE LEGISLATURE, SIGNED BY THE

GOVERNOR, TO FILL OUR STATE'S

$900 MILLION BUDGET SHORTFALL.

IT DID NOT INCLUDE A TEACHER PAY

RAISE.

HOW DID YOU FEEL ABOUT THIS

BUDGET THAT WAS PASSED?

>> IT WAS IMPORTANT THAT WE

PRESERVE THE SCHOOL FUNDING

FORMULA.

WE WORKED WITH THE LEGISLATURE

TO MAKE SURE THEY PAID 100% OF

THE HEALTH CARE BENEFIT, AN

OBLIGATION IN CURRENT LAW FOR

TEACHERS.

WE WATCH THAT CAREFULLY SO THAT

THERE WOULD NOT BE A CHANGING OF

ONE FUND TO ANOTHER, WHICH

REALLY MEANT A ZERO-SUM GAME FOR

TEACHERS.

IT IS A PRIMARY FOCUS FOR US TO

MAKE CERTAIN KIDS IN CLASSROOMS

ARE FUNDED FIRST, AND THEN A

TEACHER PAY RAISE.

UNFORTUNATELY, THE REVENUE WAS

NOT GENERATED TO DO WHAT I

BELIEVE WE MUST HAVE,

COMPETITIVE TEACHER PAY.

ALSO DO NOT WANT TO MINIMIZE THE

FACT THAT THOSE GREAT TEACHERS

THAT WE ALL KNOW, A TEACHER OF

THE YEAR LEAVING FOR ANOTHER

STATE, BUT I DON'T WANT TO CAUSE

ANY LACK OF FOCUS ON THE GREAT

TEACHERS THAT HAVE REMAINED.

SOME HAVE BEEN ABLE TO STAY, AND

WE UNDERSTAND THAT IS A

PERSONAL, INDIVIDUAL DECISION.

EVERYONE IN OUR SCHOOLS TODAY

LOVES KIDS AND THEY ARE

THEREFORE THAT COMMITMENT TO

KIDS.

ABIGAIL: WE HAD A LOT OF VIEWER

QUESTIONS FOR YOU ABOUT THE

BUDGET, TEACHER PAY RAISES.

MARK SAYS, WHERE WERE YOU DURING

THE LEGISLATIVE SESSION, WHY

WERE YOU NOT ADVOCATING FOR

BETTER PAY?

>> WELL, WE WERE ADVOCATING.

IT WAS VERY VIGILANT.

IT IS SOMETHING THAT IS NOT

HELPFUL TO BE OUT THERE, TAKING

ONE POSITION ON ONE WAY TO BRING

WRITTEN REVENUE.

-- BRING IN REVENUE.

WE ARE MOST GUARDING AGAINST

TERRIBLE CUTS OR GAMES THAT CAN

BE PLAYED, WHICH LOOK A CERTAIN

WAY, AND PEOPLE MAY BE CONFUSED

ABOUT WHAT MAY HAVE OCCURRED.

WE MAKE CERTAIN OUR AGENDA MOVES

FORWARD, AND THAT AGENDA IS TO

PROVIDE A COMPETITIVE EDUCATION

FOR KIDS, COMPETITIVE

COMPENSATION FOR TEACHERS.

WE ARE VERY GRATEFUL FOR THOSE

WHO WERE AT THE LEGISLATURE

WORKING ALONGSIDE US.

BUT I APPRECIATE IT IS OFTEN

UNKNOWN AND NETWORK DOES NOT

STOP, LET'S PUT IT THAT WAY,

WHEN THE LEGISLATIVE SESSION

ENDS.

ABIGAIL: A COUPLE PEOPLE WANTED

TO KNOW -- YOU ARE NOT A

LAWMAKER, FOR EVERYONE.

YOU ARE MORE OF A LOBBYIST.

YOU ARE PUSHING AN AGENDA FOR

THE STATE OF EDUCATION.

THAT IS YOUR MAIN GOAL.

THE NEXT VIEWER QUESTION.

DO YOU WIELD ANY INFLUENCE THAT

WILL ALLOW FOR BETTER EDUCATION

OPPORTUNITIES FOR OUR CHILDREN?

IF NOT, THEN WHAT IS THE POINT

OF YOUR JOB?

KIND OF PIGGYBACKING ON OUR

PREVIOUS QUESTION.

WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS THE MAIN

PURPOSE OF YOUR JOB?

>> IT IS VERY MUCH ABOUT VISION

CASTING, MAKING SURE WE HAVE A

PLAN.

ON FRIDAY, WE ROLLED OUT OUR

EIGHT-YEAR STATE PLAN FOR

EDUCATION, WHICH IS PART OF OUR

YEAR-LONG WORK WHICH HAS

INCLUDED OKLAHOMANS FROM ALL

OVER THE STATE THROUGH MANY TOWN

HALLS, THOUSANDS INVOLVED IN THE

COMMUNITIES.

THAT WORK IS SOMETHING YOU TAKE

TO THE LEGISLATURE, WHICH WE DID

, AND WE ARE ABLE TO HAVE EVERY

ONE OF OUR LAWS, BILLS THAT WE

INTRODUCE TO LEGISLATORS PASSED.

THIS INCLUDES COMPLETE REFORM OF

OUR ASSESSMENTS, WHICH AFFECTS

EVERY STUDENT IN THE CLASSROOMS

ACROSS THE STATE.

TESTING HAS BEEN CHANGED.

AT THE SAME TIME, WE HAVE NEW

FEDERAL LAW THAT WE ARE WORKING

TO MAKE CERTAIN THAT OKLAHOMA'S

VOICE, CONTEXT IS ABLE TO COMPLY

IN A WAY THAT FITS OUR NEEDS.

ABIGAIL: THE QUESTION ABOUT

STANDARDIZED TESTING.

PARENTS HAVE STRONG OPINIONS ON

THAT.

THIS ONE COMES FROM MARK.

WITH TEACHERS LEAVING FOR BETTER

PAY, IS THERE ANY CONCERN OF A

SHORTAGE OF TEACHERS?

IT IS SOMETHING THAT HAS

BEGUN FOR ABOUT FOUR YEARS.

WHEN I TOOK OFFICE, I BROUGHT

FORWARD A PAY RAISE OF $5,000,

ASKED THAT TO BE -- WE WOULD BE

COMPETITIVE WITH OTHER AREAS

ACROSS THE NATION.

WITH THE SHORTFALL WE HAVE HAD,

WITH REVENUE FAILURES, IT HAS

BEEN IMPOSSIBLE.

THAT IS TRULY AN OUTRAGE.

WE CANNOT EXCEPT THIS.

WE CANNOT HAVE ANOTHER YEAR LIKE

WE HAVE HAD, WHERE WE HAVE

ESSENTIALLY DIVESTED IN

EDUCATION.

FOR OKLAHOMA TO BE COMPETITIVE,

OUR KIDS DESERVE BETTER, AND WE

WILL FIGHT FOR THAT, BUT WE DO

NOT GET TO CAST A VOTE.

WE HAVE TO CONTROL WHAT WE CAN.

THAT MEANS WORKING WITH

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR WHAT WE CAN

DO WITH RETIRED TEACHERS, TO

BRING THEM BACK INTO THE

CLASSROOM.

THAT IS ONE OF THE LAWS THAT

CAME INTO EFFECT.

WE WORKED ABOUT TWO YEARS TO GET

THAT, SO THAT TEACHERS COULD

RETURN WITHOUT PENALTY.

ABIGAIL: NOW THAT THIS

LEGISLATIVE SESSION IS OVER, THE

BUDGET IS PASSED, TEACHERS ARE

NOT GETTING A PAY RAISE, LEAVING

TO GO OTHER PLACES.

YOU HAVE SOME OF THESE TEACHERS

STAYING IN OKLAHOMA.

I HAD SOME AMAZING TEACHERS THAT

ARE STILL HERE TO THIS DAY.

HOW ARE YOU FEELING RIGHT NOW,

FRUSTRATED, HOPEFUL?

>> I AM HOPEFUL BECAUSE OF ALL

THE PLANS THAT ARE RIGHT NOW

BEING IMPLEMENTED THAT ARE GOING

TO ALLOW FOR MEANINGFUL TIME ON

INSTRUCTION.

TEACHERS HAVE ALWAYS KNOWN THAT

WE WERE NOT GOING TO BE MAKING

THE SAME MONEY AS THE BUSINESS

MAJOR, EVEN THOUGH WE HAD THE

SAME BACHELORS AND SCIENCE

DEGREE.

WHEN WE NEEDED WAS MORE

AUTONOMY, THE ABILITY TO SAY

YES, SET HIGH STANDARDS, BUT

GOVERNMENT NEEDS TO GET OUT OF

THE WAY AND LET TEACHERS TEACH.

THAT IS WHERE WE HAVE FOCUSED,

REMOVING THOSE HURDLES THAT KEEP

UNNECESSARY RED TAPE AND

RIDICULOUS REQUIREMENTS OUT OF

THE WAY, OFF THE TABLE, SO THAT

OUR TEACHERS CAN FOCUS ON WHAT

MATTERS MOST, DOING WHAT IS BEST

FOR EACH INDIVIDUAL CHILD.

OUR FOCUS IS ON INDIVIDUAL

STUDENTS AND LEARNING FOR THE

LONG RUN.

ABIGAIL: STATE SUPERINTENDENT

BEING WITH US.
