Hello everyone, welcome to this one minute English lesson.

Today we are looking at a really common mistake between two words, which even native speakers

make.

The first word is desert and the second word is dessert.

The words are nearly pronounced the same.

I don't think you would notice which somebody is saying, if it wasn't for the context.

The first one, so desert, with one 'S' is a shorter sound with more of a 'Z' sound.

Desert.

The second one with two 'Ss' is a longer sound with more of a 'S'.

So dessert, but even with my pronouncing them now for you, there is not a lot of difference.

Desert.

Dessert.

Okay, let's look at the meaning of these words.

The first one with one 'S' is the sandy, dried up area of land.

For example something like this.

The second word, dessert, is usually a sweet dish you have at the end of a meal.

Maybe like this one.

I'm here in London

to speak about my people, the Guarani Kaiowá,

and the situation we face

today in Mato Grosso do Sul state.

We are extremely sad

that agribusiness is destroying our land:

sugar cane plantations, soya,

cattle, eucalyptus...

… and these lands are already mapped out! [as Guarani territories]

We are suffering.

My people are suffering on the sides of main roads

without health care

without decent living conditions

without clean drinking water

So here I am today, crying out for my people

here in London

in front of the Embassy,

handing in a letter to the Ambassador

so he can understand our situation.

These lands are already mapped out as indigenous territories.

We just want these lands.

We aren't asking for the whole of Mato Grosso do Sul state.

We aren't asking for the whole of Brazil.

We just want these lands, part of these lands.

That's why I'm handing you this letter

which is the cry of my people, the Guarani Kaiowá.
