"In the face of the dark wave of the Crusader force: the historical land of two rivers bore
life to a mission that would transform the political landscape of the world.
It was the establishment of the Islamic State.
Nourished by the blood of the truthful mujahideen, to unite the Ummah, on one call, one banner,
one leader."
In 2014, the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, or ISIS, ushered in a new era of darkness
to areas of the Middle East, employing violence, rape, torture and mass murder on a scale that
has led some to label them a Fourth Reich.
As such, ISIS represents the militant and public repudiation of the entire human rights
enterprise.
In spite of their apparent differences, both ISIS and the Nazis are guided by dangerous
delusions that they can bring utopia to Earth through violence, mass murder, and genocide.
The Islamic State proclaimed a caliphate, a one-world government that claims to wield
religious, political, and military authority over all Muslims around the world.
Very much like Nazism, ISIS is a totalitarian movement that aims to reorganize the world
according to their vision by savagely violating human rights and crushing human dignity.
Both the Islamic State and the Third Reich point to perceived historical grievances,
whether real or not, as justification for their barbarism.
Nazism was the direct reaction to the punitive Treaty of Versailles, which sought to punish
Germany for the part they played in the First World War.
The German people had been decimated by the war, and felt humiliated by the peace.
Public memory still remembered the power and clout of the German Empire, and Nazism promised
to give it back.
"The flames of war then quickly and voraciously made their way to the colonialist, political
borders of Iraq and Syria.
On the 12th of Sha'ban, the Islamic State was granted a landmark victory in the war
against kufr.
With the flames of war burning, the borders of Sykes-Picot. The black pages of history
that testify to the tyrannical and murderous rise of the secular state were now coming
to a close."
The Islamic State cites a variety of historical injustices as justification for their tyranny.
Among them are the Sykes-Picot Agreement, a post-World War I treaty between Britain
and France which divided the Middle East into spheres of influence and established the modern-day
borders of much of the region; foreign intervention in Middle Eastern affairs by Western powers,
which they see as an extension of the Crusades, and a war against Islam; and oppression of
Sunni Muslims by both the Iraqi and Syrian governments, which they see as heretics.
Both groups have relied heavily on these narratives of victimization as justification for their
actions.
These delusions absolve them of any wrongdoing in the eyes of their leadership and followers.
By claiming they are righting historical wrongs, atrocities against civilian and military targets
are justified as reactions against aggressors.
Through expert use of propaganda, the fantasy of being assaulted from all sides is instilled
in the minds of their followers, making their unhinged, barbaric behavior all the easier
to commit.
The world reacted too slowly to the rise of the Third Reich, and millions died as a result.
One can only hope that ISIS is contained and eradicated before their twisted ideology permeates
and permanently corrupts an entire generation.
Militarily defeating ISIS will not be enough; their barbaric ideology must be challenged
at every turn, and through every medium.
Only through exposing their thinking for what it truly is and dismantling their narrative
of victimization can ISIS permanently be defeated.
