Hello, I'm University of Michigan Police Officer Justin Berent

with me today are Officers Matt Butzky, and Kaitlin Deslatte.

We want to help prepare you for an unlikely but serious threat to our campus an active shooter

Chances are the university community will never have to face such a threat

but it's important that each and every one of us knows what to do should

an active shooter event occur on or off campus.

After watching this video, you will have three viable options

for dealing with the threat of an active shooter.

... RUN ... HIDE ... FIGHT.

It is important for you to know that you are not required by the University to take any action

but these options could save your life or the lives of others. Remember RUN, HIDE or FIGHT.

Understand that active shooter incidents are dynamic and evolve rapidly, so your decision

to RUN, HIDE or FIGHT may change depending to the circumstances.

Regardless of your decision to RUN, HIDE or FIGHT,

it's critical that you call the police and report an active shooter as soon as it's safe to do so.

The call will only take seconds, but getting law enforcement on scene quickly is extremely important

At the very least, call 911.

STUDENT: My name is Sam. I'm on the University of Michigan Diag. There's someone shooting people.

This short call is enough to initiate a police response.

Our officers are trained to respond to these types of incidents and we're here to help.

Your first option is a simple one RUN.

Sometimes people have a tendency to "freeze" when faced with danger.

If you can move away from the threat, do so as quickly as possible.

Find your escape route and evaluate your options. Windows may even need to be broken.

Move as fast as you can and don't stop moving away until you're at a safe place.

Alert others to the danger as you move but don't be slowed down by their reluctance to heed your warning.

Also, when running, consider the possibility of multiple shooters or the presence of explosive devices.

If you can't RUN, HIDE is another option.

Use your knowledge of the space to your advantage.

Closets, bathrooms and similar areas may seem like a good idea,

but could leave you cornered with no further options to move away from the shooter.

If the room has a lock, use it.

Barricade your space.

Use furniture and other large items like desks, chairs, tables, bookcases,

anything else you have available to block the doorway.

This is valuable even with an outward opening door.

You want to silence your electronics and turn off the lights.

Using a belt, bag strap or cord. You can also use your body weight to hold closed

an outward opening door or to hold an inward opening door in the closed position.

Use those same items to lash a hydraulic door closer in the closed position.

Understand that this option may take a few minutes for you to

achieve a tight fit on the mechanism.

If you are confronted by the shooter, and can not flee,

you may have no alternative but to FIGHT

You may have to FIGHT to survive.

Improvise weapons using anything available to you books, backpacks, electronic devices,

tables and chairs, even something as simple as a pen.

Consider incorporating a distraction into this physical confrontation.

You and/or others that are with you can throw objects at the shooter upon entering the room,

screaming as loud as you can.

This brief disruption to the shooter's thought process can help you close the gap to confront them.

Focus on the arm holding the weapon.

Remember, your primary goal is to separate the shooter from their weapon

There is strength in numbers, so solicit as much help as you can. Grab the shooter.

Collectively drop your body weight and drive the shooter to the ground.

Use all means available to accomplish this goal.

The law enforcement response to an active shooter will be swift and significant.

We are trained to respond to an active shooter and will identify ourselves as police.

It is extremely important that you follow our instructions.

To recap, responding to an active shooter requires quick, decisive action.

Remember your options.

RUN to a safe location.

HIDE and barricade your space.

FIGHT if confronted by the shooter.

Whatever option you choose,

call 911 as soon as it's safe to do so.

Its terrifying to imagine, but an active shooter is a situation we all need to be prepared for.

Wherever you go, take the time to identify exits. Identify places where you can hide,

and items you can use as weapons.

These alerts will notify you of an emergency on campus, so you can respond accordingly.

FOULEN THROUGH.

AFTER A DOG HONED IN ON THE

AREA, THEY DECIDED TO

BREAKTHROUGH THE ICE.

THERE WAS NO INDICATION

THERE HAD BEEN ANY BREAKAGE IN

THE ICE.

EVEN FAMILY MEMBERS SAID THEY

HAD GONE AROUND, DIDN'T SEE

ANYTHING.

AGAIN, WHEN THE DOG HINTED

AROUND THERE, THE DIVERS WENT IN
