(soft music plays)

It's not easy being an undocumented student, but at De Anza College

there's help available.

If you or anyone in your family's interested in going to

college, the De Anza Outreach office has the

answers for you. When it's time to register,

Admissions and Records can help most

undocumented students qualify for

in-state tuition.

The Financial Aid office can help with the California Dream Act, which

makes students eligible for scholarships

and state financial aid. The EOPS program also

has more resources for low-income and

first-generation college students, if

they qualify and meet certain criteria.

Plus, De Anza's website has a special page

with resources for undocumented students.

There's also a program on campus called

HEFAS, which stands for Higher

Education for AB540 Students,

and it serves undocumented students.

HEFAS is a student-run program that provides free services

reduces financial stress and creates

a safe space for undocumented students.

HEFAS also works on building future leaders,

creating social justice and advocating

for higher education.

You can come to HEFAS for free services and materials,

such as printing, testing materials

like Scantrons, and free textbook

and calculator rentals.

HEFAS also helps with access to scholarship

information and counselors. And we also

have access to off-campus resources

such as free legal aid.

Check out HEFAS. It's a great way to

participate in social justice, civic

engagement and leadership projects.

Everyone is welcome. You don't have to be

undocumented to volunteer with us.

Imprisoned for Profit: The Northwest Detention Center - Duration: 3:18.

It is conveniently in a place where nobody knows it exists.

A lot of people don't know what is happening here,

the harm that is being committed, the abuses that are happening.

Unlike a prison for US citizens, there's no rehabilitation attempted.

There are very few classes.

There's a very tiny library.

They get almost no outdoor time.

No one should be in this detention center, literally starving,

because the nutrition here is so poor.

It was one of the core demands of the group of folks

inside this detention center who went on hunger strikes several years back.

If you were in a federally-run prison, you would receive

much better medical care than you would in here.

There was one person in detention who had cancer

and was not getting the care he wanted.

Once they determined that he really needed the surgery

they released him, because they didn't want to pay for it.

They delayed for months the surgery this gentleman needed.

It makes sense that if you are a corporation, like GEO Group that runs this facility.

They are in the business of locking people up and

tearing families apart, because it's extremely profitable for them.

And they are one of the largest private prison corporations

in the world, and they run this facility.

And they do so with the consent of the community, because this is a contract.

GEO's contract was renewed for 10 years recently.

We disagree with that decision.

We think it's a bad decision, especially considering how

the profit motive comes into play, Where it encourages people to be put in here,

to fill quotas, just to make more money.

That only encourages seeking-out people just to imprison them,

even if it's very minimal low level offenses

they may have done, such as driving without a license.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement promises to pay

for at least 1000 beds here every day, whether they are full or not

So that gives an incentive to fill those beds with people,

because they are going to be paying for them either way.

So there's always at least 1000 people in the detention center.

People are denied access to due process when they are incarcerated.

They are put in positions where guards will target them for speaking out,

using solitary confinement and other sort of

intimidation tactics.

No one here has the right to an attorney.

The state does not pay for an attorney, so it's on these

individuals and their families to pay for legal services.

There are certain people who certainly think that

the detention center provides jobs and economic growth.

But it's only something that is built upon the harm of other people

I have students from all kinds of backgrounds,

and I have students that have been brought here "illegally".

And for them to be separated from their families,

whether they get picked up sometime on the street

or whether their parent gets picked up…

That is wrong.

It is unjust.

Obviously it has really tragic ramifications for families and kids,

and it's impossible to pay these legal fees a lot of the times.

And folks end up being deported because they are not able

to make their case for a visa or refugee status.

We generally think it's a shame on our city to have something like this here.

Just as they have deferred action for some children right now,

for people who came as children, we want deferred action for all immigrants,

to be out of detention, and be able to work, and be free.

Choi refuses to appear for questioning over bribery allegations - Duration: 2:07.

Turning our focus to the independent counsel team... that's investigating the corruption

scandal that has engulfed the nation...

The team is set to seek another arrest warrant for Choi Soon-sil, the woman at the center

of the scandal, today... after new allegations emerged that Choi was involved in public affairs

for her own personal gains.

Hwang Hojun has the details.

The special investigation team led by independent counsel Park Young-soo plans to seek another

short-term arrest warrant for Choi Soon-sil, the jailed confidante of President Park Geun-hye,

and the woman at the heart of the scandal.

Choi rejected the team's summons to undergo questioning Monday morning over the bribery

allegations against her, criticizing the investigation as coercive.

Choi was not legally obligated to comply with the latest summons, but another warrant could

allow the team to compel her to appear.

"The independent counsel summoned Choi Soon-sil to question her on charges of acceptance of

a bribe for good offices, but she didn't respond and gave no justifiable reason.

We are planning to request a short-term arrest warrant under the same charges within a day

or two."

Choi is alleged to have extorted money and favors from large conglomerates, using her

personal relationship with the president.

"Acceptance of a bribe for good offices" is yet another charge recently uncovered by the

team... in addition to abuse of authority, coercion and bribery.

Some suspect the charge is related to the K-Town project in Myanmar, an official development

assistance program implemented last year; Choi Soon-sil allegedly acquired personal

gains during the process.

The independent counsel summoned the Korean ambassador to Myanmar, Yoo Jae-kyung, on Monday...

to find out what he knows about the allegations.

Meanwhile, the special probe team again summoned former Culture Minister Cho Yoon-sun and former

presidential chief of staff Kim Ki-choon over allegations that the presidential office directed

the creation and management of a blacklist of cultural figures deemed critical of the

government.

not just in advising schools, but also serving as governors

on boards and councils of churches and schools,

so they know what it's like

So we look to be practical in what we focus on.

This webinar series is designed to be practical.

Six one hour webinars,

across the course of this year.

They'll all be recorded - there'll be PowerPoint presentations available.

Follow the links below or embedded in this video to register,

Feel free to invite others to be part of these webinars as well.

We want to be part of equipping school leaders in their mission

E PERSON ALSO EXPRESSED TO ME

THAT THEY FEEL LIKE PRESIDENT

TRUMP IS APPROACHING THIS AS

WELL AS MOST ISSUES AS A

BUSINESSMAN INSTEAD OF A LEADER.

I DID SPEAK TO ONE BUSINESS FROM

ONE OF THE 7 COUNTRIES IN THIS

BAN AND HE IS CONCERNED.

QUIRKS I SUPPORT THE ACTION TO

PROTECT THE CITIZENS OF AMERICA

AGAINST THE THREAT AGAINST THESE

-- THE THREAT FROM THESE

COUNTRIES THAT DON'T HAVE STABLE

GOVERNMENTS. %

RHEYA: SEVEN COUNTRIES ARE NOW A

PART OF PRESIDENT TRUMP'S 90 DAY

TRAVEL BAN IN AN ATTEMPT TO TAKE

MUSLIMS OUT OF THE COUNTRY.

OMAR ALI IS FROM ONE OF THE

-- OF THE SEVEN.

>> I CAME FROM SUDAN.

I STILL DON'T UNDERSTAND THE

REASON WHY SUDAN IS BANNED LOOK

AT THE HISTORY OF THE UNITED

STATES.

I HAVE NOT SEEN ONE REFUGEE OR

NON-REFUGEE COME IN HERE AND

CAUSE PROBLEMS.

RHEYA: ALI HAS HAD HIS BUSINESS

IN DES MOINES FOR 14 YEARS.

HE'S AN AMERICAN CITIZEN BUT

FINDS IT DIFFICULT TO HAVE TO

HAVE THIS DIALOGUE WITH HIS

FAMILY, SOME STILL IN SUDAN.

>> WE ALL WANT SECURITY.

NO ONE WANTS TO LIVE IN A PLACE

THAT IS DANGEROUS.

RHEYA: THE SAME REASONING AND

JUSTIFICATION FROM BRANSTAD.
