It is conveniently in a place where nobody knows it exists.
A lot of people don't know what is happening here,
the harm that is being committed, the abuses that are happening.
Unlike a prison for US citizens, there's no rehabilitation attempted.
There are very few classes.
There's a very tiny library.
They get almost no outdoor time.
No one should be in this detention center, literally starving,
because the nutrition here is so poor.
It was one of the core demands of the group of folks
inside this detention center who went on hunger strikes several years back.
If you were in a federally-run prison, you would receive
much better medical care than you would in here.
There was one person in detention who had cancer
and was not getting the care he wanted.
Once they determined that he really needed the surgery
they released him, because they didn't want to pay for it.
They delayed for months the surgery this gentleman needed.
It makes sense that if you are a corporation, like GEO Group that runs this facility.
They are in the business of locking people up and
tearing families apart, because it's extremely profitable for them.
And they are one of the largest private prison corporations
in the world, and they run this facility.
And they do so with the consent of the community, because this is a contract.
GEO's contract was renewed for 10 years recently.
We disagree with that decision.
We think it's a bad decision, especially considering how
the profit motive comes into play, Where it encourages people to be put in here,
to fill quotas, just to make more money.
That only encourages seeking-out people just to imprison them,
even if it's very minimal low level offenses
they may have done, such as driving without a license.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement promises to pay
for at least 1000 beds here every day, whether they are full or not
So that gives an incentive to fill those beds with people,
because they are going to be paying for them either way.
So there's always at least 1000 people in the detention center.
People are denied access to due process when they are incarcerated.
They are put in positions where guards will target them for speaking out,
using solitary confinement and other sort of
intimidation tactics.
No one here has the right to an attorney.
The state does not pay for an attorney, so it's on these
individuals and their families to pay for legal services.
There are certain people who certainly think that
the detention center provides jobs and economic growth.
But it's only something that is built upon the harm of other people
I have students from all kinds of backgrounds,
and I have students that have been brought here "illegally".
And for them to be separated from their families,
whether they get picked up sometime on the street
or whether their parent gets picked up…
That is wrong.
It is unjust.
Obviously it has really tragic ramifications for families and kids,
and it's impossible to pay these legal fees a lot of the times.
And folks end up being deported because they are not able
to make their case for a visa or refugee status.
We generally think it's a shame on our city to have something like this here.
Just as they have deferred action for some children right now,
for people who came as children, we want deferred action for all immigrants,
to be out of detention, and be able to work, and be free.
