Archerfish Says..."I Spit in Your Face!" | Deep Look - Duration: 3:36.

Life began in the water.

It looked across the boundary between wet and dry, and saw… dinner.

Some species evolved legs from their fins and became land animals.

Others, like this archerfish, found a way to bridge the distance between water and land...

while still staying wet.

Archerfish spit water in a high-pressure stream through the air, knocking prey from its perch.

Pretty clever, right?

They live in the estuaries of Southeast Asia, where mangrove trees stand knee deep in brackish

water.

It's the perfect arena for a deadly game of hide and seek.

But this fish has more than just good aim.

Depending on the distance to its target, the archerfish can calibrate, changing the shape

and speed of its spit.

A series of experiments at Wake Forest University measured the force of that spit on impact.

The spitball on the left has further to go, but it still packs the same punch.

That's because its tail end catches up to the front on contact.

Like an archer pulling a bowstring, the fish judges the distance, makes a few calculations,

then lets it fly.

You might say it's using water as a weapon.

But wait a minute…

That kind of sounds like tool use, which among scientists who study evolution is a big deal.

Because we used to think that you needed a big, complicated brain -- more like a human

brain -- to use tools.

And like all fish, this archer has no neocortex, that outer layer of the brain, where functions

like higher reasoning and memory live.

In other words, this fish has less of a brain than we do, but in a way, it's incredibly

smart. But how smart?

That's what one Oxford scientist wanted to know.

She asked: Can an archerfish tell one human face from another?

In her lab, she trained an archerfish to expect food whenever it spat at the image of this

one face.

See, facial recognition is another of those abilities you're supposed to need a neocortex

for.

When she showed the fish a series of other faces...Nothing.

But when that familiar face appeared?

Bingo.

In spite of its tiny brain, it knew the face.

We humans have used our brains as the baseline for intelligence -- if you don't have our

hardware, you can't do what we can do.

But that idea is evolving.

The archerfish and many other animals... it turns out, have found their own ways to be

smart.

Are you a better shot than an archerfish?

Try hitting a beer bottle with a snowball from about 50 feet away and you'll see.

And check out this episode about some other animals that manipulate water to survive.

They carry a breathing bubble around with them, like little scuba divers.

Depression is a lesson in itself - Duration: 1:16.

It's probably just not to have expectations about where I want to see

myself or be...or how to be...to let myself be and to accept and love where I'm

at. The depression is actually a lesson in itself. It is the lesson.

Every time I feel bad, it is teaching me something about who I am and my reactions

to things. And so, if I can come out of that bad feeling and look at it

objectively, I learn so much just from that. So one of the lessons that I've

gotten from being depressed in moments is that I can use my depression to learn and

grow. I can view it a different way. I can thank it. I can be grateful for it.

I can see it as a blessing, because without it, I would never expand and grow,

you know. Every time I feel sad, every time I feel depressed is another

opportunity to move through it. And by moving through it, I become so much

stronger than I was before. So for that, I'm grateful. I'm grateful for my

depression, definitely.

Korea calls on Japan to withdraw plans to include false claim over Dokdo in teachers' guideline - Duration: 1:51.

The nation's Foreign Ministry made it clear, Japan's false sovereignty claims over Dokdo

is 'intolerable.'

Kwon Soa has Seoul's response to Tokyo's plans to include such historic and geographic distortions

in its educational guidelines.

Seoul's Foreign Ministry called on the Japanese government to immediately withdraw its wrongful

territorial claim over Korea's easternmost Dokdo island,... as Tokyo reportedly aims

to include such groundless claims in its revision of a teachers' guideline for elementary and

middle school textbooks.

The Japanese daily Yomiuri Shimbun reported over the weekend, that Tokyo's education ministry

is expected to make it an obligation to teach students that "Takeshima", the Japanese name

for Dokdo is controlled by Japan,... beginning 2020.

"If Japan's plan materializes as has been reported through media, the Korean government's

stance is, that it won't tolerate Japan's unjustified claim over Dokdo,... which is

our integral territory."

The ministry's spokesperson Cho June-hyuck added that Seoul has numerously delivered

Korea's position to Japan,... including this time.

However, on questions regarding possible countermeasures,... Cho said at this point the government is closely

watching the situation,... as the Japanese government has not made an official decision

on the revision yet.

The foreign ministry also criticized Japanese officials' continuous sovereignty claims,...

and urged for an immediate halt to such attempts at falsely promoting Dokdo.

The ministry added that Korea and Japan have always faced difficult problems,...

...which is why Seoul must maintain a firm standpoint against Tokyo's repeated false

claims, while continuously making efforts to bring a stable development of bilateral

ties.

Gyeongju seeks sustainable ways to grow as a city of cultural heritage - Duration: 3:17.

Tourism is a sizeable source of income for Gyeongju.

Choosing not to merely stay content with its thriving industry, the Korean city is developing

new ways.... to pass on its magnificent cultural assets to the next generation.

Oh Soo-young takes us to the nation's cultural capital

Every year, the city of Gyeongju attracts millions of tourists with its numerous cultural

attractions, from traditional hanok houses and elaborate sculptures to magnificent Buddhist

temples.

A mere two hours south of Seoul on the KTX bullet train,... the former capital of the

Silla Kingdom is known as a "museum without walls."

"In recent years, however, the city has ventured beyond its traditional tourist hotspots to

develop new and sustainable attractions.

And that's what I'm here to see today."

Hwangnyongsa Temple was built in 569 AD, during the apex of the Silla Dynasty.

The nine-story pagoda beside it, at 80 meters high,

was the tallest structure in Asia at the time -- a testimony to the kingdom's unity and

strength.

However, the entire site was burned to the ground during the Mongolian invasion in the

mid 12-hundreds, leaving only a few stones remaining.

"Considering the sheer size of Hwangnyongsa Temple, we will begin by restoring the southern

gate starting next year.

Once we acquire enough historical evidence, we will restore the nine-story tower and the

main hall."

"Sociocultural sustainability also includes restoring what existed only in old texts and

materializing such relics for future generations.

Being able to touch and experience something is a completely different experience than

just seeing it through text.

So restoration work through historical research ultimately helps Gyeongju further instill

its cultural identity."

West of the city center, huge hanok houses made of glass impose their presence.

It's a modern-day take on the East Palace and Wolji Pond, where rare plants, birds and

animals were raised for the first time in Korea, according to historical records.

Inside the botanical gardens, there is a jungle of more than 4-hundred plant types from all

over the world.

Eccentric flowers and plants from tropical countries put an exotic spin on the otherwise

traditional setting.

There are traces of history everywhere, like a mini palatial pond and lotus engravings

on the paths.

Crossing over to the Bird Park, visitors can find more than 200 types of birds, from ducks

and parrots to flamingos and toucans.

"Diverse and authentic cultural experiences bring more tourists to a region, which spurs

local spending and, eventually, invigorates the local economy.

So restoration projects with a modern twist, like the Gyeongju East Palace Garden, play

a vital role in that sense."

Reviving its glorious past, the city of Gyeongju is building up new landmarks to grow as the

capital of Korea's cultural heritage.
