The independent counsel's probe into Choi Soon-sil's daughter Chung Yoo-ra is picking
up steam.
Chung, who's currently under arrest in Denmark, has been tied to multiple charges against
her mother, including that she used her influence to secure entry for Chung into one of Korea's
top universities.
Our Kwon Jang-ho has details on what's next in this phase of the investigation.
Chung Yoo-ra has appealed to the Danish and Korean authorities that she would be willing
to return to Korea of her own volition if she were released and guaranteed a situation
in which she could remain with her 19-month-old son.
Chung is the daughter of Choi Soon-sil, President Park Geun-hye's longtime confidante who is
accused of having used her relationship with Park for her own personal gains.
An independent counsel in Korea is looking to question Chung on her and her mother's
role in the allegation that she gained unmerited entry into one of the nation's top universities
and preferential treatment in grading.
The two are also under investigation in connection with funds given by Korean companies to support
Chung's aspiring dressage career.
Despite Chung's plea for her release, the independent counsel in Korea is continuing
to work with the Danish authorities to force her extradition.
Korean authorities have already succeeded in persuading a court in Denmark to extend
Chung's detention from three days to four weeks while she is investigated by local prosecutors.
Korean authorities have also issued the order to invalidate her passport and it's expected
to take effect next week.
Meanwhile, the independent counsel is holding a university professor who admitted to giving
Chung special treatment while she was in school.
Although he'd previously pleaded his innocence, Professor Ryu Cheol-gyoon changed his position
under questioning, but added that he was only under orders from the former dean of the university.
As the investigation gains speed, the independent counsel is now considering whether to force
Choi Soon-sil to submit to questioning.
Choi, who is currently being held in a detention center on the outskirts of Seoul, has so far
failed to respond to any summons, citing ill health.
