Rangoli, also known as Kolam or Muggulu, is a folk art from India in which patterns are created on the floor

They are meant to be sacred welcoming areas for the Hindu deities generation to the next,

For those who don't know about Rangoli, Rangoli, also known as Kolam or Muggulu,

is a folk art from India in which patterns are created on the floor in living rooms or courtyards using materials such as colored rice,

dry flour, colored sand or flower petals. It is usually made during Diwali (Deepawali), Onam, Pongal and other Indian festivals.

Rangoli art is an adornment or decoration that has different names in different states of India,

for example, Rangoli in Karnataka, Chaookpurna in Chhattisgarh, Mandana in Rajasthan,

Aripan in Bihar, Alpana in Bengal, Sanskar Bharti in Maharashtra, Kolam in Tamil Nadu,

Muggulu in Andhra Pradesh, Aipan in Kumaon, Kalam in Kerala, and Saathiya in Gujarat.

Not just in names, the designs also vary as per the region.

Rangoli is created using colored rice, dry flour, flower petals, turmeric (Haldi), Vermillion (Sindoor) and colored sand.

The patterns include the face of Hindu deities, geometric shapes peacock motifs and round floral designs.

Many of these motifs are traditional and are handed down by the previous generations.

This makes rangoli a representation of India's rich heritage and the fact that it is a land of festivals and color.

In President-elect Trump's New Year's message to his Twitter followers he wished a "Happy

New Year to all, including to my many enemies and those who have fought me and lost so badly." 

***He was immediately flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct.

Incoming White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer says President-elect Trump will continue

to use his Twitter account after he takes office to make major policy announcements. 

***And to complain about stuff… so, same old, same old.

  

It's dubbed finger lickin' good but in New York, Anna Wurtzburger says she was so disappointed

with her "family-sized" bucket of chicken, she's suing the fast-food chain.

For $20 Million!!

Wurtzburger bought the $20 bucket of chicken over the summer as a "rare treat" but was

shocked when it looked nothing like the KFC's ads.

She says it was only half full so the 64-year-old widow rang up KFC's headquarters in Georgia

to complain.

They sent her two gift certificates but she gave them back and hired a lawyer.

***Why did the chicken cross the road? 

To get away from this nutball lady. 

Someone in Los Angeles welcomed the New Year on Sunday by altering the world-famous Hollywood

sign to read "Hollyweed." 

***Wow, climbing that big hill and draping "E"s over the "O"s in Hollywood?

That's a lot of initiative for an obvious weed USER.

  A Georgia Waffle House waitress has been fired

after shooting a gun during a robbery. 

So she was fired for firing. 

What, was she TAKING PART in the robbery?!?! 

No!

She got fired after trying to protect the restaurant from three robbers.

When the men entered, one had a note threatening to shoot everyone there unless they handed

over money.

Heather Stanley read the note, then went to grab her gun from her car.

She fired once INTO THE AIR as the robbers escaped to their vehicles.

She was fired as a result.

***So bad guys wanted to take your money but a loyal employee stopped the robbery.

So what's the PROBLEM here, Waffle House?

  Officers patrolling New York City's harbor

over the weekend spotted a whale in the East River.

The whale was seen during the day on New Year's Eve along the shores of Manhattan's Upper

East Side.

Giving up smoking for the new year - Duration: 2:31.

We're now exactly three days into 2017, and three days - that's all it takes for your

new year's resolution to go down the drain.

It's a saying familiar to many Koreans.

One of the most popular resolutions worldwide include kicking the horrible habit of smoking.

But, surveys show just one in five smokers who've pledged to kick the habit actually

do so within a year.

How do you help it?

Lee Unshin has this story.

The new year is a time for making resolutions.

But whether it's to make a new habit or kick an old one, the toughest part of any resolution

is sticking to it for the long term.

Kim Young-gi, is struggling with just that.

Kim's been using tobacco for almost 35 years... and yet he still hopes to give it up for the

year 2017.

"I go through about 10 cigarettes a day.

I tried to quit numerous times.

I tried patches and herbal remedies, but none of those worked.

But every January, I say this is going to be the year I'm really going to quit."

Kim's wish for the new year is a common one.

In December, online sales of stop-smoking aids like nicotine patches and gum... soared

about 30-percent from the month before.

To help those who want to be tobacco-free... the government has taken several measures,

such as nearly doubling the price of cigarettes two years ago... and making tobacco companies

put graphic images on the packaging to warn people of the health risks of smoking -- those

are set to appear later this month.

But the campaign against smoking has so far not been enough to get Kim to go cold turkey.

So how can someone like Kim succeed after years of trying in vain?

Doctors suggest seeking help from experts.

"Doctors see smoking as a condition; an addiction to nicotine.

While those quit-kits, may work for light smokers, some heavy, long-time smokers, could

use additional help."

Like medication to reduce cravings for tobacco, or counseling services available for free

at health centers throughout the country.

And a moment of weakness here or there doesn't mean you've failed.

"One slip up, is not an excuse to throw away your resolution.

First try cutting back on smoking, and then aim for going cold turkey."

And, letting friends, family and coworkers know what you're working towards will help

you hold on to your determination.

After all... it might be worth giving it your best... so this resolution does NOT become

a yearly tradition.

HELP OUT NEW HAVEN BUS RIDERS.

SUPPOSED TO BE UP AND RUNNING

MONTHS AGO.NEWS 8'S KENT

US IT'S STILL NOT IN PLACE.BUS

RIDERS IN NEW HAVEN WERE

ORIGINALLY TOLD THIS GPS

SYSTEM WOULD BE IN PLACE A

FULL YEAR AGO. NOW THEY'RE

BEING TOLD...MAYBE NEXT MONTH.

THIS IS A SYSTEM THAT WOULD US

GPS TO TRACK ALL THE CTTRANSIT

BUSES AROUND NEW HAVEN, AND

THEN FOLKS WAITING AT BUS

STOPS WOULD BE ABLE TO LOOK AT

AN APP ON THEIR PHONES AND SEE

WHERE THE BUS IS AND WHEN IT'S

GOING TO SHOW UP. CITY

OFFICIALS REALLY PRESSED THE

STATE FOR THIS BECAUSE NEW

HAVEN BUSES HAVE A TENDENCY TO

BE LATE. THEY WERE TOLD THIS

SYSTEM WOULD BE IN PLACE BY

THE END OF THE YEAR 2015.

WELL, IT'S JANUARY OF 2017,

AND STILL NO GPS SYSTEM. THE

NEW HAVEN INDEPENDENT REPORTS

THERE WERE TWO SETBACKS. FOR

ONE, THERE ARE SEVERAL

DIFFERENT KINDS OF BUSES

DRIVING AROUND NEW HAVEN, SO

THEY NEEDED DIFFERENT KINDS OF

HARDWARE TO INSTALL THE GPS

SYSTEM. THE OTHER SETBACK WAS

THAT WHILE THE STATE RUNS THE

CT TRANSIT BUSES IN NEW HAVEN,

THE CT TRANSIT BUSES IN, SAY,

NEW BRITAIN ARE RUN BY A

PRIVATE COMPANY. THE DOT WANTS

RIDERS EVERYWHERE TO BE ABLE

TO USE THIS TECHNOLOGY, BUT

THE INDEPENDENT REPORTS THE

DOT DIDN'T WANT TO INSTALL

STATE EQUIPMENT IN A PRIVATELY

OPERATED FACILITY. SO THE

VENDOR INSTALLING THIS HAD TO

COME UP WITH A NEW, MULTI-

AGENCY SYSTEM THAT COULD

OPERATE INDEPENDENTLY IN THE

VARIOUS REGIONS.THAT WON'T BE

AVAILABLE UNTIL FEBRUARY.

ACCORDING TO THE INDEPENDENT,

THERE IS ONE PLACE WHERE THEY

ARE USING THIS SYSTEM AS KIND

OF A TEST, BUT IT'S NOT HERE

WHERE THEY ASKED FOR IT, BUT

IN HARTFORD.

Syrian refugee 'asked ISIS for £150,000 to turn cars into bombs in Germany' - Duration: 2:07.

German police arrest Syrian refugee 'who asked ISIS for £150,000 to turn cars into suicide bombs he could drive into crowds of non-Muslims'

German police have arrested a Syrian refugee who allegedly asked ISIS to fund an attack using explosives-packed vehicles.

The unemployed 38-year-old migrant urged an ISIS contact via mobile phone message service Telegram to send him 180,000 euros, prosecutors said.

Police commandos raided his apartment in Saarbruecken near the French border around 2:00 am on New Year's Eve.

He was detained before being formally arrested on terror financing charges on New Year's Day.

The man's 'as yet undefined attack scenario' suggested turning cars into suicide bombs in Germany, France, Belgium and The Netherlands, police said.

On 19 December, 12 people were killed when Tunisian man Anis Amir drove a truck into crowds of people at a Christmas market in Berlin. ISIS claimed responsibility for that deadly rampage.

Spiegel Online reported the plan was to re-paint the vehicles to make them look like police patrol cars.

It named the suspect as Hasan A and said his contact was located in the militant group's de facto capital of Raqqa, in Syria.

The man had entered Germany in December 2014 and applied for asylum in January 2015, obtaining refugee status and a residency permit, prosecutors said in a statement.

More than a million asylum-seekers entered Germany in 2015, while a further 300,000 were projected to have arrived over the past year.

In December 2016, he asked an ISIS contact in Syria to send him the money 'so he could purchase vehicles which he could load with explosives and which he wanted to drive into crowds...and blow up in order to kill unknown numbers of people who do not follow the Muslim faith'.

According to messages found on his phone, the man said each vehicle would be re-painted and packed with 400-500 kilogrammes (880-1,100 pounds) of explosives at a cost of 22,500 euros each, prosecutors said.

Prosecutors said the man 'admitted contact with the ISIS but denied terrorist motives' - suggesting he claimed to have attempted to defraud the extremist group.

Investigators said there was no evidence the suspect had already obtained and prepared any vehicles for an attack.

Police said 'an initial evaluation of the evidence did not point to a concrete threat to New Year's Eve events'.

Growing up in Africa for 21 years will always be a part of me - Duration: 1:06.

Some days I do feel like a tourist. Some day I feel like a tourist.

I don't know why. I mean, I grow in Africa. Like 21 years of my life,

I've been in Africa. And I've only been here in six years...for six years.

Although I've done so much, even though I don't give myself those many credit.

This is the first time I'm admitting that. I feel like I have accomplished something

in my life than what I have accomplished in the first 21 years.

But I mean I had accomplished something to be here. But still, at some time or some

days you just...you get that feeling of I'm just here for...you don't know for how

long. And then other day you feel you belong, so especially when you have

friends that have become your family. It's easier to have those days that you

just feel like you belong here . But, again, living in Africa for 21 years

that's...have a big part of me.

Oscar winning actor Robin Williams could be a part of the Harry Potter Franchise but missed

the opportunity because of being American.

He was rejected for the central character of the book, Hagrid as the casting director

Chris Columbus only wanted British actors for the franchise.

It is also reported that the comedian also called columbus because he really wanted to

be a part of the movie but the casting director had been instructed to hire only a British

cast.

The Harry potter fans are immensely in love with the character which is played by Robbie

Coltrane in the movies who appeared in all eight of the movie adaptations of J.K.

Rowling's books as the half-human, half-giant gamekeeper and Keeper of the Keys.
