Antidepressants: Why the 'Overmedicated America' Narrative Is Harmful | Dr. Drew Ramsey - Duration: 3:40.

I think the big question in people's minds is who can they trust for their information

about mental health?

On the one hand we have big pharma, and there have been some incredible breakthroughs.

I'm a psychiatrist.

I prescribe medications and I find some people really it saves their lives.

And you don't hear that in the media.

This week I've heard a number of antidepressants called a miracle drug, a miracle cure and

I don't take any money from big pharma I've just used these medications for over a decade

now.

For some people they're lifesavers.

Then there's the supplement industry.

And the supplement industry is really largely unregulated.

They make a number of claims that really aren't supported by the evidence and it gets people

into a notion, this happens a lot where instead of taking a medicine that's been closely studied

and brought to market and closely monitored, they'll be taking five, ten, 15 different

supplements.

It's hard to know as a physician whether that's safe or not and whether that's really warranted.

There's a lot of delay in terms of people getting appropriate treatment.

Then, of course, we have talk therapies, which tend to take a longer time and cost more money.

So this is where I think food comes into the picture.

One is we all can agree we trust.

For the most part if it's a whole food it grows on a farm.

There are concerns about big pharma out but I've never heard a concern about little farmers

so that's where I try to direct people.

And I also like it as a psychiatrist that it's one of my interventions that is absolutely

delicious, that people like, that people can do for themselves.

We're in an epidemic of mental illness and we're also in an epidemic of misinformation

about mental illness.

The amount of stigma that we see still and the embarrassment that my patients have for

a victory over some of the most debilitating and disabling illnesses and deadly illnesses

in the world, it's concerning as a doctor.

I see people just profoundly ashamed by how they're feeling and the illness that they

have.

So I think we have a long way to go.

I think we're getting there.

I think more and more - I've been a psychiatrist for 16 years, there's a change in the conversation.

People talk about having bipolar illness.

People talk about being treated for depression.

Men talk about being treated for depression really for the first time in history in a

way that it gives me some hope that if we can have a more open conversation we can make

a bigger dent.

Now it's what more than 40,000 suicides a year in America.

We have 600,000 veterans with severe traumatic brain injuries.

We have a lot of work to be done.

And on the front lines of mental health I think I just try to remind myself to sit with

my patients, to do no harm and to give them a menu of options.

I think that's one of the things that's gotten missed in this whole discussion about mental

health.

People talk about how many people are kind of overmedicated in America and I always like

to point out that ten percent of Americans that take antidepressants in the morning,

they do that voluntarily because it's something that helps them.

And I think that when we talk about an overmedicated society sometimes we miss the point.

I would say that we're a mis-medicated society.

I've seen a lot of people in my practice who are just on the wrong meds for the wrong reasons

and I've met even more people who've never ever had a trial of even something natural

like St. John's wort that has incredible evidence that it's a very, very good antidepressant.

And I think that's the part, the folks who aren't getting any help that's the most concerning

part to me because that's when people end up in real, real trouble.

Ep.11: Four Passions of the Soul - Duration: 6:01.

Hey everybody, I am back and I want to talk to you about fear, sorrow, hope, and joy

The four, what we call The Four Passions of the Soul according to John of the Cross.

This is just a 2-minute.

synopsis of it to give you the view at 30,000 feet.

So, are you are reading John of the Cross here, you're coming to Carmel. You're in carmel

What is these about fear, sorrow, hope, and joy.

If you're a spiritual director you want to know that.

If you are being directed, you want to know that because.

You're to fear only the loss of God, you are to take sorrow only in the loss of God, you

are to hope only in the, in God and you take joy only in God.

Now, that can be harsh. So, some leaders will ignore that.

Some will downplay it but I am going to give it to you in its full measure as these tapes

progress because

I don't think you should ignore it.

I don't think we should diminish it and I think John of the Cross has a clear answer

but we want to get it in his head and his mind set in the 1500s and he never wants

for anybody to act as a beast.

He's never telling you that you are going to have to choose God and not your family.

He is orienting you towards God.

The fullness of God and He's giving you the mindset of God, who is asking you to have communion

with Him.

So, fear, sorrow, hope, and joy.

And, we want to consider those concepts and we want to think about them from the standpoint

of you want to fear only in the loss of God.

You want to take sorrow only in the loss of God.

You want to hope only in God and take joy only in God as first things.

So, beautiful, I Ieave you with just a little snapchat here of my experience and my witness.

If you are anxious about something and you're not certain what you are anxious about if

you can tell me, what is it that you take great joy in? and if you tell me that it is

your red courvet; then the loss of the red courvet is going to bring you sorrow and if

you have not lost it, you may fear of loosing the red courvet.

So, the threat of something in the presence could be a fear of the loss of that red courvet.

If the the red courvet has already been taken from you.

That red courvet is a car in America, here; a valuable car, sports car.

If you have already lost that red courvet.

You are taking sorrow in the loss of something in the past.

The loss something in the future can often present itself as fear.

So, you have this vague anxiety, this vague fear.

You can look in the Bible.

I believe it was the holy people in the Old Testament that have fears in the night.

I think Solomon had fears in the night.

And, this is a part of the spiritual walk with God.

So, you don' know what that is your anxious.

Now, because we are going to have the general means to perfection.

The general coming closer to God and this specific means.

If you know exactly what God wants you to do, you are going to be further ahead.

But, again what we want to use these in terms of spiritual direction: fear, sorrow,

hope, and joy.

Now, you are taking joy in that red courvet, you're hoping if you don't have the red

courvet, you are hoping in that courvet.

It go through all the five senses to figure out.

What is this you take in in joy with touch.

What is it this fear, hoper, sorrow, and joy.

And, touch, in taste, in smell and you can go through the rest of the senses and determine

for yourself.

You are going to take in an inventory internally of what it is. We'll come back to that

Leave a comment below if you want to hear more about it because I can go on.

I'll parts this very carefully but right now this is an introductory level.

I want to put the concept of the four passions on your map.

Good theology is good psychology and you'll come to have happiness.

I want you to have more control, predictability in your life and happiness.

So, I hope that has helped.

We can come back to it , we can do a podcast, spending an hour, debating this but I've

taught on it for a long time and I want to indicate to you as we go further into this.

There will be an introductory presentation of the concept.

Then, but we don't have background, you don't need any background.

There will be a, for many culture.

Then there will be an intermediate presentation and then there will be a presentation for those who are more advanced

that are in the unit stage

So, we will go through all stages, but right now, I want that in your map of knowledge.

So, as a practical manner at this point: ask your spiritual director.

Are you considering the four passions that John of the Cross talks about?

Fear, hope, sorrow, and joy as your leading me.

Okay?

And we will come back to that.

Alright?

5 WAYS TO PROTECT CHILDREN FROM BRAIN DAMAGING TOXINS - Duration: 9:09.

5 WAYS TO PROTECT CHILDREN FROM BRAIN-DAMAGING TOXINS.

Having a child is often considered to be one of the most joyous moments in a parents

life, but it can also be one of the most stressful.

One common stressor is the risk of your little one coming into contact with harmful toxins.

Many new parents, in fact, rate this as the biggest source of concern in the first few

years of having a newborn.

Exposure to harmful toxins can happen in many ways.

Some toys, even though they are specifically designed for babies, can contain toxins.

Equally, a lot of processed foods can contain obscure chemicals and additives.

A recent Forbes article points to research that suggests chemicals in toys and food may

be contributing to what scientists are calling the global, silent pandemic of neurodevelopmental

toxicity.

Limiting exposure to toxins is especially important for babies because they are still

developing.

As such, their immune systems are less able to fight potentially damaging toxins than

a fully grown adults.

And while you may be able to limit your own exposure to toxins by being careful about

the products you use, the fact that children put everything in their mouths means that

everything they are close to needs to be safe!

So how do you limit your childs exposure to harmful toxins?

You could, of course, uproot your whole family and move to a pure, beautiful spot in the

countryside.

Alternatively, you could keep your kid in a hermetically sealed box for the first few

months!

For most parents, though, these are not realistic options.

Instead, follow these five steps to drastically reduce your childs exposure to harmful

chemicals:

chemicals:

advertisement - learn more Create a healthy nursery

Trust the experts Go organic

Check the label Heed your intuition

Lets take a closer look at each step.

Create a Healthy Nursery

The importance of designing and creating a healthy nursery cannot be overstated.

The nursery is the place where your child is going to spend the most time during the

first few months and years of their life, so you want to create a space that is as free

from harmful toxins as is humanly possible.

Nowadays, thankfully, this can be relatively easy.

Our increased awareness of the effects of harmful toxins on children has led to many

manufacturers producing nursery products that are free of dangerous and unnecessary chemicals.

Everything from the mattress your little one sleeps on to the paint you use to decorate

their room is now rigorously tested, and comes with guarantees that it will not expose your

child to synthetic chemicals.

Do Your Research

A little research can go a long way when it comes to reducing your childs exposure

to potentially harmful toxins.

Even a few minutes spent reading about the products you are planning to buy can afford

great peace of mind, because you can be sure that every item your child comes into contact

with has been approved by experts.

Medical authority sites like Parenting.com, and reputable review sites such as Kokopax,

are good places to start your research.

The best review sites rate the products they review by speaking to real parents, so you

can be sure that the opinions you are reading can be trusted.

Many parents now prioritize limiting their childrens exposure to harmful toxins when

considering which products to buy, so most trusted review sites will take this into account.

Go Organic

Of course, harmful toxins do not only reside in the toys, bedding, and paint that your

child comes into contact with they can be in the food they eat, too.

Many parents have accordingly decided to go organic to avoid exposing their children to

pesticides.

Food manufacturers have caught onto this fashion, and so wherever you are, you should be able

to find good-quality organic baby food, even when your child is really small.

Look for the mark of your local organic certifying authority, and you can be sure that the food

you are buying is free from pesticides and other nasty chemicals.

Check the Label

This might sound obvious, but it is something that is easy to forget in the first few months

of having a newborn child.

This can be an extremely busy, stressful time for many parents, but taking a few minutes

to read the label of the items you buy for your child will make a big difference in their

health and in your own peace of mind.

Nowadays, everything from baby formula to mattresses must, by law, say what it is made

from.

Checking the label is therefore the easiest, most direct way to see if there are any harmful

toxins in these items.

Trust Your Gut

Ultimately, trust yourself.

Test a few different products, and find the ones that work for you and your child.

New parents soon develop an almost supernatural ability to detect chemicals and toxins, becoming

almost a part of their childrens immune system!

If a product has an unpleasant chemical smell, or you simply do not trust it for whatever

reason, listen to your gut.

In the end, nothing can replace your finely-honed instincts as a new parent.

Following these rules can significantly reduce your childs exposure to harmful toxins.

Make sure you create a healthy nursery, use review sites to do your research, consider

going organic, and always read the label.

Ultimately, though, trust yourself and your instincts.

Is There a New Women's Movement? - Duration: 4:02.

SOLEDAD: THESE ARE THE IMAGES OF

MARCHES ACROSS THE COUNTRY,

ORGANIZED LARGELY BY DEMOCRATIC

ORGANIZATIONS OPPOSING PRESIDENT

TRUMP'S AGENDA.

SOME SAY THE MASSIVE TURNOUT WAS

ONE-TIME GROUP THERAPY.

OTHERS SAY IT'S THE START OF

NEW RESISTANCE.

THE BIG QUESTIONS,

WILL THE PROTESTS TRANSLATE INTO

REAL ACTIVISM FOR WOMEN?

DOES IT HAPPEN REGARDLESS OF

POLITICAL PART

ONE PERSON SAID THE MARCH

MOBILIZED WOMEN, FOR LONG TERM

ACTION.

ERIN VILARDI, THEIR EXECUTIVE

DIRECTOR IS HERE.

NICE TO SEE YOU, THANKS FOR

BEING WITH US.

HOW DO YOU MEASURE SUCCESS OF

THAT MARCH?

ERIN: YOU MEASURE SUCCESS BY

WHAT HAPPENED AFTERWARDS, HOW

MANY WOMEN HAVE BEEN ACTIVATED.

YOU MEASURE SUCCESS FOR US BY

HOW MANY WOMEN RAISE THEIR HANDS

AND SAY ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.

I'M READY TO RUN FOR OFFICE.

FOR US, THOSE NUMBERS ARE

THROUGH THE ROOF.

SOLEDAD: WHAT ARE THOSE NUMBERS?

ERIN ON MONDAY, WE LAUNCHED

SOMETHING CALLED NOW I RUN.

WE HAVE HAD 500 WOMEN DECLARE

THAT THEY WILL RUN AND EITHER

RUN IN 2018, 2020 OR WITH A FIVE

YEAR PLAN.

ABOUT HALF OF THE WOMEN WE ARE

SURVEYING RIGHT NOW, ABOUT 44%,

WANT TO RUN IN THE NEXT TWO

YEARS.

SOLEDAD: WHAT IS THE CENTRAL

MESSAGE OF THIS MARCH?

ERIN: THE CENTRAL MESSAGE FELT

LIKE WE ARE ALL AMERICANS.

I MAY NOT LOOK LIKE YOU, SPEAK

THE SAME LANGUAGE, BUT THERE IS

ROOM FOR ALL OF US.

I THINK THE MARCH ORGANIZERS DID

A GOOD JOB OF LIFTING UP PEOPLE

YOU DON'T NORMALLY SEE ON TV,

WHOSE VOICES NOT USUALLY ON THE

FRONT PAGE MAGAZINE OR THE FRONT

PAGE OF THE "NEW YORK

TIMES CO.

THEY WERE TALKING ABOUT THE

ACTIVISM FROM THE LOCAL LEVEL,

AS WELL AS THE ISSUES THAT

WOMEN CARE ABOUT HEALTH CARE,

FULL REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS, EQUAL

PAY, INVOLVED IN OUR ECONOMY AND

TURNING THIS COUNTRY AROUND.

SOLEDAD: THERE WAS A LARGE

NUMBER OF WOMEN FOR WHOM

REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS ARE NOT AT

THE TOP OF THE AGENDA, OR DON'T

SUPPORT REPRODUCTIVE RIGHT

HOW DO YOU OPEN UP THE TENT THAT

IS BIG ENOUGH TO HOLD EVERYONE

IS PART OF YOUR AGENDA GOES

AGAINST SOMETHING THAT THEY

BELIEVE?

ERIN: I THINK THE MODEL IS

ACTUALLY THE WOMEN SENATORS AND

WOMEN IN THE HOUSE.

THEY HAVE LONG BEEN TALKING

ABOUT ADOPTION, TO TALK ABOUT

MEDICAL BENEFITS WHEN YOU DO

WANT A CHILD.

I THINK THERE ARE WAYS WE CAN

CREATE SOME ALIGNMENT THERE

WITHOUT ALWAYS ONLY TALKING

ABOUT ABORTION.

WE NEED TO HAVE A LARGER

CONVERSATION ABOUT WHAT IT MEANS

FOR WOMEN TO BRING HEALTHY

CHILDREN INTO THE WORLD AND LEAD

HEALTH LIVES SO TAKE PLACE IN

OUR DEMOCRACY, START BUSINESSES,

HAVE THAT SOLID FOOTING THAT IS

REQUIRED.

SOLEDAD: HOW DO YOU TURN A

SOCIAL MOVEMENT THAT WAS WIDELY

SUCCESSFUL INTO A POLITICAL

AGENDA IN THE CONTEXT OF A MEDIA

THAT SEEMS TO BE LURCHING FROM

TWEET TO SHINY OBJECT OVER HER

?

ERIN: WE HAVE TO BECOME OWN

MEDIA HUB.

WE HAVE TO CALL OUT WHEN SEE

FAKE NEWS, WE NEED TO MAKE

COMMENTS ON FACEBOOK FEEDS WHO

MIGHT BE PUTTING OUT THINGS THAT

SEEM RIDICULOUS THAT YOU KNOW TO

BE UNTRUE, OR NOT SCIENTIFICALLY

ACCURATE.

WE HAVE TO BE OUR OWN MEDIA TASK

FORCE AND DO THAT ON OUR OWN

SOCIAL MEDIA.

SOLEDAD: IT SEEMED TO ME, MOST

OF THE WOMEN WERE LEFT LEANING,

BUT NOT NECESSARILY OF THE

DEMOCRATIC PARTY.

>> CORRECT.

SOLEDAD: THAT'S INTENTIONAL.

IS THAT GOOD?

PROBLEMATIC?

ERIN: I THINK THAT IS A GOOD

THING.

I AM NOT LOOKING FOR WOMEN WHO

WANT TO BE ON A TEAM.

I DON'T THINK PEOPLE THINK THAT

AMERICAN DEMOCRACY IS A TEAM

SPORT THAT

HAS BEEN VERY SUCCESSFUL.

MANY MORE YOUNG PEOPLE NOT

PICKING DEMOCRAT OR REPUBLICAN

WE ARE SEEING THE DIFFERENT

WINGS OF THE PARTIES COME ABOUT

AND I THINK THAT IS HEALTHY.

IN ORDER TO MAKE ALIGNMENTS AND

GET POLICY WORK DONE, YOU NEED

DIFFERENT COALITIONS.

IF KEEPING PITTING DEMOCRATS

AGAINST REPUBLICANS WE WIL

STUCK IN A GOVERNMENT THAT DOES

NOTHING.

I THINK IT IS OK THAT ISN'T A

CLEAR ALIGNMENT WITH A

PARTICULAR AGENDA.

WOMEN'S RIGHTS ARE FOR EVERYONE.

THIS ISN'T ABOUT TYING YOUR

ISSUE TO A PARTICULAR PARTY.
