All Scientific Papers Should Be Free; Here's Why They're Not - Duration: 4:43.

If science drops in a field but no other researchers are around to hear it, does it further the

academic area of study?

Howdy researchers, Trace here for DNews.

Science is a process, it's a way of thinking about the world around us.

Most of these scientific processes are thought through and then published in a journal, but

to read them you have to pay!

Shouldn't all this scientific knowledge be FREE!?

Firstly, science is mostly paid for by grants from governments, non-profits, foundations,

universities, corporations or others with deep pockets.

We did a video about it.

But, even though the science was paid for, that's just the first half of the equation...

the other half is the scientific journal.

The first journals were published over 350 years ago as a way to organize new scientific

knowledge, and that continues today.

According to the International Association of Scientific, Technical and Medical Publishers,

2.5 million new scientific papers are published each year in over 28,000 different journals.

A new paper is published every 20 seconds.

(and you thought we'd run out of stuff for DNews 😉).

Researchers need others to read their paper so it can affect their field.

So, they freely send their treasured manuscripts to journals for peer review and publication.

When a manuscript comes in, specialists select and send the best manuscripts to volunteer

experts in the field who are "carefully selected based on… expertise, research area,

and lack of bias" for peer review.

After that, the papers are copy-edited, compiled into an issue of the journal, physically printed

and then shipped and/or published online!

They're, like, the nerdiest magazines in the world.

All this costs money…

According to a study in PLOS One this whole process can cost 20 to 40 dollars per page,

depending on how many papers the journal receives and how many they have to reject.

Someone has to pay for that, and there are three ways this can happen: authors can submit

for free and readers/subscribers pay (called the traditional model), or authors pay and

readers get it for free (called open-access), or both authors and readers pay!English-language

journals alone were worth $10 billion dollars in 2013!

I know what you're thinking, just put them on the internet!

Save on shipping, like newspapers and magazines!

Well, even though publishers don't have to print and ship big books of papers anymore,

they often still do.

And, even if the journals were only online, servers and bandwidth need to be paid for,

and that ain't cheap.

Publishing requires dollah bills, y'all and someone has to pay, and everyone gets

their money differently…

For example: the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) publishes

the Science journals, and the Public Library of Science publishes PLoS One among others;

both are nonprofits.

But, while PLOS uses an open-access (free to you) model, Triple-A-S publishes six journals:

five with a traditional model (you pay) and one open-access.

Plus, there are for-profit journals like Macmillan Publishers, who own the journal Nature (and

a mix of traditional and open access options).

And the giant Reed Elsevier (now called RELX) publishes over 2000 journals some of which

are open-access and some are traditional!

So, though some are non-profits, they don't always give it to YOU for free, and those

that do still can charge researchers up to 2900 dollars to publish!

While others make money off scientific research which makes some people feel icky.

The whole thing is confusing.

Asking "what is worse: for-profits charging universities or readers for access, or open-access

charging authors?"

Shrug.

The debate rages.

Many scientists argue as the peer review is provided for free by the scientific community,

and the papers are provided for free by the scientific community; access to the papers

should.

be.

free.

The EU agrees, ordering any publically-funded papers to be made free by 2020; pushing toward

open access to science!

In the US, where many of the papers originate, some scientists are calling for boycotts on

for-profit publishing.

In the end, there was a time when practitioners needed a physical reference to the latest

scientific achievements.

In the days before the internet, getting a journal in the mail must have been both exciting

and illuminating, but now, thanks to digital publishing… this whole pay-for-science model

is wont to change…

People WANT the knowledge to be free, but no one knows how to do it.

As y'all know, more research is always needed, but should that research be behind a paywall?

2 (14.5-oz.) cans French Style Green Beans, drained

1 (18-oz.) can Progresso™ Vegetable Classics creamy mushroom soup

1 (6-oz.) can french fried onions

Prep : 10 m Cook : 15 m Ready In : 25 m

Heat oven to 350°F. In 1 1/2-quart casserole or glass baking dish, combine green beans, soup and half of the onions; mix well.

to 'One English Tip in One Minute for

Spanish Speakers' where each week I talk

about, in some detail, one common English

mistake made by native speakers of

Spanish....and this is video number 12, so

it's the twelfth video.

Once again I appreciate the fact

that you are trying to improve your

English. So well done with that. In these

videos I show you a slide, and on the

slide there are two sentences: One is the

correct way that I as a native English

speaker would say it,

the other is the wrong way that many

Spanish speakers say it. You have to

decide which one is correct. Please do

that now. Read the sentences,

listen to me read the sentences, pause

the video, think about your answer and I

will talk about the answer in the slide that

follows this slide.

If you got it wrong - or you just happened

to guess it right -

you're in good company. Many people make

this mistake. What it means is that

you need to start studying to get past

this mistake. To start you off on

that process, I've given you three

sentences to study from. Memorize

these sentences in their entirety, drill

them into your brain -- really hard wire

them in there by studying, studying,

studying -- and put into practice what

you've learned through speaking or

writing or both...and that's the way you

get past these mistakes. You have to

repeat that process -- until you've -- until

the bad English has left your head and

the good English comes in...to stay,

hopefully.

Hey everyone, my names sophi and i love youtube i love youtube so much that im actually contemplating

getting a tattoo on my foot at one point in my life if i still love it enough so guys

i mean what is there not to love about youtube there is silly pranks there is beautiful musicians

and artists that are getting their voices heard there is people speaking their minds

and bringing awareness to things that we don't really think about there is so much and there

is just some content that calming and relaxing and there to make people better since about

2013 and thats not really a long time there is people that have been doing youtube for

far longer but its when i really got into it it was my get away from boring things it

was something to entertain me and it was really cool to see other people from around the world

im really into british youtubers so its fun to see people that dont live in the states

where at the time i started watching i was living in Argentina so it was really cool

to see other peoples thoughts and stories ive been watching for a long time and ive

watched all the basic people you could know i watched pewdiepie i love dan and phil one

of my favorites i watched jenna marbles here and there i even saw meekakitty which is tessa

violet and shes one of my favorite and i got to meet her most of those people are youtube

dinosaurs theyve been here for a while and they love what theyre doing and its something

really inspirational some proof of my obsession is that i go to this convention in orlando

florida thats called playlist and i go with my best friend andrea who has a channel and

she vlogs it and everything and its amazing because we get to watch it back but its literally

our thing like we wait for that convention ever single year weve been going this is gonna

be our 4th year in 2017 and its basically a youtuber convention where you meet all the

youtubers that go and you know its like a mini vidcon its our favorite because we literally

have seen so many people we have meet tyler oakley dan and phil tessa and rusty which

are favs and a bunch much but im not bragging its not for that just how much dedication

we have to it that we literally go so much that we had the chance to meet those beautiful

people and they are people we watch all the time its people who we never thought wed meet

and i think playlist is another drive that got me going to start content because i watch

my best friends do it and she loves it shes also a youtube dinosaur but its just so nice

to see your life cataloged in such a way and to be able to talk to people from across the

world or just from the states now having people watch this and having an audience is terrifying

and its something that im not use to myself i am use to andrea having that but its really

wonderful to think that one day i could help someone or just give some adviced to someone

and make their slightly better even if im background music to them doing normal activites

everyday we all know how it feels to just have that comforting voice in the background

or soemthing to watch if u had a bad day ive had that and i wish to be that for other people

basically the reason why most youtubers do it you know im not the most creative person

but i do have a lot to say and i hope people would want to hear that i think its so cool

that we have so many people on this earth and we can connect just by video and comments

and tweets and internet friends its amazing i think we should all just just use that you

know its really easy to start a channel the real thing is being able to have a good message

to spread im a hufflepuff and i just want to help people that is my goal in life i want

to be able to put a smile on peoples faces and make their day a lil bit better

thats it really i also love listening to people's problems if you got a problem comment down

below cuz i am ready to listen now there are a lot of excuses for why i didnt stat my channel

in the first place be been wanting to do this since 2013 but i wanted to start off right

and i know its stupid a lot of people say that you can just start with your phone but

my phones never have memory i dont have good quality and i never had a decent camera till

now im very thankful for that i was able to start off at a decent level its not the best

audio or quality or setup but i did want to start at a good base and i think i finally

have that and i also wanted to have the commitment fo it i wanted to be able to actually upload

at least once a week maybe or be able to edit and actually commit to doing that myself and

not just stray and trail off so i really do hope that with this base i can build up and

do better and i feel like im finally comfortable with actually starting so thats my excuse

i do not know how to edit anything so bear with me i know its gonna be bad but i have

friends that are willing to help me and im very grateful for that i have Andrea whos

gonna teach me and some other friends that are more than happy to tell me what i do wrong

and what i do right so ya thats it i just want to make content in the future i dont

know whats gonna come out of it maybe some tags with my best friend andrea but i am super
