THE CENTURION: Salvete!

Greetings all!

My name is Cornelius.

Thirty-nine years old and a centurion these twenty years in the VIth

Legion of the Roman Army.

Agh - it's cold tonight, up here by The Wall.

They built it in the time of Emperor Hadrian.

Keep the Barbarians out.

Defend the border of the Roman Empire.

Us on one side, them the other.

That's what we hope anyway.

I'll be glad when we get away from here – finish the repairs

and then back to the fort.

It's a tough life but we get on with it, knowing

that one day, if we're lucky, we can eventually retire with a little

money.

Eighty men I command.

Not always the same men of course.

Some die, some grow old and one or two run away.

Try to go home to their families.

Families.

I have a family.

My daughter Galla, her husband and her son...my grandson...

This wall is getting old now - like me!

We're here to make repairs, keep everything as it should be, make sure

the Barbarians can't get across.

Can't get at us.

We march, set up camp and repair, march, set up camp and repair, march, set up camp and,

well, you get the idea.

Seems to be working too - there hasn't been any fighting for many

months.

Makes the men a bit restless though.

I tell them it's only a question of time before something kicks off

again...that these peaceful moments will not last so they better try to

enjoy them while they can.

They like staying up late, my men.

Sitting by the fire and drinking wine, telling stories of the battles they've taken

part in.

'The Good Old Days' they say.

But I've seen too many battles - hard and long and

bloody they are.

Makes me uneasy being here tonight...we fought a

battle on this part of The Wall some years back...

(Flashback:)

The Barbarians.

They don't have much in the way of weaponry or

strategy.

Just a rabble really.

But they're brave...and fierce.

They caught us by surprise.

Charged us.

But we have strong men; lots of them – and artillery.

We turn the onager at them.

It's a huge catapult for throwing rocks.

And then the ballista, like a giant crossbow that shoots bolts.

Can spear the enemy even through his shield.

My men are also trained infantry.

They don't just repair walls!

They know how to fight.

So then we're up and at them - each man fighting

with two spears.

Takes a lot of training because the spears are long –

longer than the men are.

And then it's the short sword.

The men are highly skilled with the sword and they like to get up close and personal

with the enemy.

Do some real damage.

Hand-to-hand combat.

It's hard and bloody, but finally we're taking control, beating the

Barbarians.

And we're just about to finish the job when...one of our

own horses kicks me square in the ribs!

I just heard something crack and then I fall and can't get up.

Too painful.

My men have to carry me away because I can't walk.

Later they told me I passed out.

(Flashback ends:)

Broke my ribs that horse did when he kicked me.

The medic gave me a recipe of herbs and plants.

Told me to crush them with a stone and boil them in water and then drink it when

it was cool.

It was horrible!

Horrible!

I don't even know if it worked.

My wife used to make potions for my ailments but at least she'd

sweeten it with honey or sweet flowers.

My wife, the most beautiful woman in my village.

She's dead now.

But at least I have my daughter Galla.

I can't wait to see her and my grandson.

I've never even met him.

The men are tired.

Nearly ready to turn in.

We've worked fifteen hours today mending The Wall.

They've spent the last few hours setting up the camp for tonight and now they're

finishing up their meal.

Stew made with a few hares – the skinny wild ones you find in

these parts – and roots and oatmeal and whatever herbs we can find.

If I could I'd retire tomorrow and go and stay with Galla and her

family.

They live in Camulodunum – a big town in the south.

I visited once before my grandson was born.

It was after that horse kicked me.

The doctor said I couldn't fight and anyway my ribs wouldn't

mend in this cold climate.

So I was sent south for a month to be with my daughter.

There's a lot to see and do in the city.

And at night I go to sleep on a bed that's so comfy you just know you'll

have the sweetest dreams.

But not round here, out on the moors, middle of nowhere.

So, time to turn in for the night, but not before I set the night watch

– a few soldiers who'll be awake through the night, keeping an eye out

for the enemy.

Making sure they stay on their side of The Wall, making

sure they don't surprise us.

We've had enough of that before...

I'll get about three hours' kip before the early rise and the march

back.

But in those three hours, I'll dream of retirement, of Galla and

my grandson and a lovely warm bed in Camulodunum.

And another night's sleep is another day closer to that

dream.

So - valete!

South Korean President thanks U.S. congressional delegation for supporting his North Korea policy - Duration: 2:49.

President Moon Jae-in welcomed a U.S. congressional delegation at the presidential office earlier

this Monday.

The two sides saw eye-to-eye on the growing importance of the Seoul, Washington alliance.

The South Korean leader made clear, however, that in the end it will be dialogue that will

lead to North Korea's nuclear dismantlement.

Our chief Blue House correspondent Moon Connyoung reports.

(Korean) "I would like to thank all of you for your

efforts in promoting peace on the Korean Peninsula and in Northeast Asia."

South Korean President Moon Jae-in welcomed a U.S. bipartisan congressional delegation

led by Representative Ed Royce at the presidential

Blue House extending his special thanks for keeping the pressure strong on North Korea

through legislative means while at the same time sending a message for diplomatic solution.

The South Korean leader added the complete dismantlement of North Korea's nuclear program,

however, must ultimately be achieved through dialogue.

In response, Congressman Royce highlighted the importance of the South Korea, U.S. alliance.

(English) "This special relationship that South Korea

and the U.S. have is the cornerstone of our relationship."

The South Korean leader also touched upon other aspects of the Seoul, Washington relationship.

(Korean) "President Moon noted that the South Korea,

U.S. alliance is maturing into a comprehensive one embracing the economy, social issues,

and culture from an alliance solely based on the military

and security.

Noting how the Korea, U.S. FTA makes huge contributions to the development of both countries,

the president vowed to make efforts to build a more reciprocal relationship between the

two through the free trade agreement."

have been another 20 billion U.S. dollars of additional trade on top of the trade that

we were already doing between Korea and the United States (...) My hope is that we use

Johanna Konta a 'major contender' for US Open, says Annabel Croft

British No 1 Johanna Konta is a major contender to win the US Open, says Annabel Croft. Andy Murrays withdrawal from the mens tournament means Konta is leading British hopes in the final Grand Slam of the year.

Konta is one of eight women who could end the US Open on top of the world rankings, and former British No 1 Croft believes the 26-year-old can go further than her semi-final finish at Wimbledon on the hard courts at Flushing Meadows.

She brings out such a high intensity every time shes on the court, Croft said of Konta, who made her breakthrough two years ago by reaching the fourth round of the US Open.

She makes players have to play at such a high level to beat her because of that almost machine-like application to what shes doing. Even the way she walks is very purposeful and she gives off a lot of positive energy.

Shes really mentally tough and its going to take somebody really good to beat her thats for sure. There are very few weaknesses and shes definitely a major contender for the title..

Wimbledon champion Garbine Muguruza currently sits top of the womens world rankings, with Serena Williams - due to give birth imminently - having been absent since the Australian Open.

Konta, who opens her campaign on Monday against Serbian Aleksandra Krunic, could face Muguruza in her half of the draw but believes the fight to be world No 1 remains wide open going into the tournament.

I really believe that its been that way for some time now, she said.

Its a good thing that people start appreciating and actually noticing it, because its a very exciting thing as a spectator coming to a slam and knowing youre going to have great matches all the way through and not just from the semi-finals.

I think thats a very positive thing for the sport in general. Konta is one of four British players who will start their campaigns on Monday.

Kyle Edmund, fresh from a run to the semi-finals of the Winston-Salem Open, takes on 32nd seed Robin Haase while qualifier Cameron Norrie will bid for a first main-draw win at a grand slam against Dmitry Tursunov.

Heather Watson won the junior title eight years ago but has not managed a senior victory, losing in the first round for the last six years.

US Open: Questions for Garbine Muguruza, Johanna Konta, Maria Sharapova

Who is going to challenge at the US Open? Who will finish the fortnight as world No 1? Can anyone break their Grand Slam duck? We look at five questions in the womens draw heading into New York….

Can Muguruza continue strong summer?. Given she had not won a tournament in the previous 13 months, it was something of a surprise when Garbine Muguruza won Wimbledon this year.

But her form since suggests she is trending in the right direction heading into the US Open.

A semi-final run in Stanford and then quarter-finals in Toronto was followed by victory in Cincinnati, with wins over Madison Keys, Svetlana Kuznetsova, world No 1 Karolina Pliskova and Simona Halep helping secure the title.

Against Keys, who had won their last meeting in straight sets in Stanford, Muguruza staved off three match points to progress, while Pliskova and Halep were dispatched for the loss of just six combined games.

The American swing was never going my way, she said after winning in Cincinnati. Finally, this year, I improved that.

Im looking forward to being there [in New York] and feel I can improve on what has happened the past years, because I feel like I never really found my rhythm. I want to change that..

While the momentum appears to be with the world No 3, she has not fared well at the US Open in recent years, failing to make it past the second round in four appearances.

Can she make a run this year? She says she is trying not to have too many expectations.

Every time I have a little bit, it holds me a little bit back. Im just going to go out there from zero. Forget about what happened previous years. Its a new tournament.. Can Halep finally crack it?.

Simona Halep has been one of the most consistent players on tour in recent years, winning three titles in each of 2015 and 2016 and one so far this season. A Grand Slam title has evaded her, though.

She has reached the semi-finals at Wimbledon and the US Open and twice made the final at the French Open.

Her defeat to Jelena Ostapenko in the final of the French Open this year - when she led by a set and 3-0 - was one of three times in 2017 that she has played for the No 1 ranking.

The second occasion came at Wimbledon when she lost to Johanna Konta in the quarter-finals and the third was in Cincinnati when she was dismantled 6-1 6-0 by Muguruza in the final.

Haleps coach, Darren Cahill, told ESPN after the loss in Cincinnati: Theres still a little leftover residue from Paris. It takes some time to get over that..

Considering how much confidence plays a part in Haleps game, if she cannot put two tough-to-take Grand Slam defeats completely behind her then it is difficult to see her succeeding in New York.

However, after making the quarter-finals and semi-finals at the US Open over the last two years, perhaps this will be the year that Halep gets over the line. Is Konta a contender?.

After her memorable run to the Wimbledon semi-finals, Johanna Konta will be looking to go one better in New York.

The world No 7s game is well-suited to hard courts, even if she lost her first match in Toronto earlier this month before a quarter-final defeat to Halep in Cincinnati.

Both of her titles this year, in Sydney and Miami, have been on hard courts, and American legend Billie Jean King thinks Konta will do damage at the US Open.

She is on the cusp of winning big. She knows it, King is quoted as saying by the Daily Mirror. There is no reason she cant have a great second half of the year.

The Wimbledon semi-final defeat could be a springboard into the future for her if she uses the experience well…I think that match, even though she lost, could be a huge, huge turning point..

Kontas Grand Slam breakthrough came at the US Open two years ago when she came through qualifying and then beat Muguruza and Andrea Petkovic to reach the fourth round.

She reached the same stage last year and, if she can recreate the form she showed at Wimbledon, there is no reason why she should not be a challenger in New York. Will Pliskova handle the pressure?.

One of the most successful players on tour over the last year, Karolina Pliskova was crowned world No 1 at Wimbledon despite a second-round exit.

Since winning her first Premier title in Cincinnati last year, Pliskova has won three more tournaments in Brisbane, Doha and Eastbourne, but, like Halep, a major has eluded her.

She lost a memorable three-set final at the 2016 US Open to Angelique Kerber after beating both Venus and Serena Williams, and this year has made the Australian Open quarter-finals and French Open semi-finals to set herself up for world No 1 despite another early Wimbledon loss.

Her No 1 ranking will be on the line in New York, with anything other than a run to the final seeing her lose top spot.

But if Pliskovas powerful game is firing on all cylinders, particularly her serve - from which she has fired down a tour-leading 348 aces this season - then she will be a match for anyone. What will Sharapova do?.

When Maria Sharapova returned from a 15-month ban in April there were some who expected her to hit the ground running and quickly start to climb the rankings, but it has not turned out that way.

She performed well on her immediate return at Stuttgart, reaching the semi-finals without dropping a set and then losing to Kristina Mladenovic in a tight contest.

That, though, is her best performance to date and, as she goes into her first Grand Slam in 18 months, she does so only having played nine matches since April.

you can always follow your dreams and do what you like

maybe in a day you only have one hour of free time

maybe you can sacrifice watching Netflix or jacking off to porn or whatever

for an hour or 2 of free time

and in that hour or 2 of free time

you can do the things you really want to do

and in the beginning

you know how in a video game it's really easy to level up in the beginning

so in the beginning you don't need much time

to actually get yourself kinda going

you just put in a little bit of time into it

and you'll see some results pretty quickly

and you'll realise

hey I can actually fucking do this

and then the more you do it

the better you get at it

eventually you'll start monetizing it

it's not like 0 - 100 okay I'm gonna quit my job

and work on my dreams

because that's not very realistic

but what is realistic is

blocking out a little bit of time every day

to work on the thing you wanna do

until eventually that thing you want to do

gets really good and then you can spend all your time on it

and live the life of your dreams
