I'd say to Australians when they meet someone with a communication disability
would be to give the person a go give them time to communicate.
Communication is so different amongst different people we communicate in such varied ways but
everyone is unique and everybody's message is important.
Communication access to me
is about having a community where we have supports and strategies in
place so that we don't see the differences between people who
communicate in a different way or a way that we might not expect them to communicate.
Give them time don't finish their sentence for them if you think
that they need help ask first if they want your help.
Sometimes all we need to
do is spend a little bit more time and a little bit more patience to understand a message.
When we take the time to respect and value all the different ways that
people communicate we can really enhance a person's quality of life.
