Swedish for sporty: Volvo S90 and V90 R-Design (2016) execs unveiled

Until now Volvos new S90 and V90 range-toppers have done without a sporty-looking model to take on the ever-popular Audi S Line and BMW M Sport models in company car top trumps.

The Swedes have fixed that with the new S90 R-Design and V90 R-Design, unveiled today. Its the predicted big seller in the range, with Volvo predicting that 45% of all cars ordered will come in R-Design trim.

What's new on the R-Design Volvo execs?.

Volvo has nailed it with its latest design language – the XC90 ushered in the new look in 2015 and now the new S90 and V90 extend the family look into the executive saloon and estate territory.

Note the more gently sporting add-ons including tweaked front and rear bumpers, piano black exterior trim, a revised grille and some seriously big, pothole-unfriendly alloys.

Inside, the changes are harder to spot, but there are a few clues to remind you you're in a sportier Volvo, including leather sports seats, carbonfibre-style trim and R-Design pedals. The now-familiar portrait touchscreen takes centre stage. .

Are there any tweaks under the bonnet?. No engine details have been released yet, but we expect the range to mimic that of the rest of the 90 range (until a hot Polestar performance version arrives). .

So there should be D4 and D5 diesel engines, a T6 petrol and T8 plug-in hybrid, with diesel versions expected to make up the majority of sales.

All-wheel drive is likely to be available, too, as with the rest of the S90 and V90 range. Will it be more fun to drive?.

Yes - according to Volvo, at least. The new R-Design models come with a tweaked chassis that'll deliver a more 'energetic, road-hugging drive', but we'll let you know if this is true when we get behind the wheel. .

How much will the S90 and V90 R-Design cost?. There's no word on prices for the R-Design trim, but the XC90 R-Design undercuts luxurious Inscription models by around £1000, so we can expect the S90 and V90 to follow suit.

That means an S90 D4 R-Design should be around £34,500 and the V90 £2000 more than that in line with the cars' current pricing structure.

English for Russian Speakers 44 - 'in the rain' or 'under the rain'? -(with subtitles) - Duration: 1:59.

Hi again everybody, and welcome back to 'One English Tip in One Minute for

Russian Speakers' where each week I talk about, in detail, one common

English mistake made by Russian speakers when they are trying to learn English,

and this is video number 44.

Yeah, so good for you for trying to master and perfect your English. It's a

very smart thing to do, it's a very cool thing to do and, in today's world, it's

actually a very practical thing to do. Nice going there. In these videos, I show

you a slide, and on the slide there are two sentences: One is the correct way

that an English language speaker would say -- a native English language speaker --

the other is the wrong way that many Russians say it when they try to speak

English. Your job is to decide which one is correct. Read the sentences,

think about the answer, pause the video if you have to and I will discuss the

enter in the slide that follows this first slide.

If, like many other Russian speakers who are learning English, you got this

wrong -- or you just took a wild guess and happened to get it right -- it just simply

means that you need to study this structure more. To start you off on

that path, I've given you three sentences to study from. Memorize the sentences

in their entirety -- really drill them into your brain -- and then put into

practice what you've learned through speaking or writing or both...and go

beyond this video and try to learn from other sources as well.

NBA TV-NBA Highlights-No apparent rush for Westbrook in becoming NBA's No. 1 earner - Duration: 8:26.

NBA TV-NBA Highlights-No apparent rush for Westbrook in becoming NBA's No. 1 earner

It has been nearly two months since Russell Westbrook could agree to the fancy new designated veteran player extension with the Oklahoma City Thunder that would make him the highest paid player in league history.

In that time, a lot of stuff has happened in the NBA -- a lot of stuff -- that has taken what was one of the biggest storylines entering the offseason and put it on the backdrop.

But in the middle of it all, James Harden signed the same mega-extension with the Rockets, John Wall took a five-year offer from the Wizards and Stephen Curry re-signed with the Warriors for $200-plus million.

Westbrook has bounced between Los Angeles and Oklahoma City a number of times this summer, and hasnt taken the offer. The deadline is the last day before the regular season starts -- Oct.

16 -- and with each passing day, the anxiety builds in OKC. Why hasnt Westbrook accepted the deal that would pay him $207 million over five years?.

When Westbrook agreed to an extension last summer (with a player option on the final year), and talked about loyalty and his affinity for the Thunder, he didnt know the new designated player extension was coming.

He thought he was signing a deal that extended him to the 10-year veteran max, a bump to 35 percent of his teams cap.

He thought hed play out two more seasons, and then revisit his future in free agency in the summer of 2018. He was making a commitment to the Thunder in the wake of Kevin Durants departure, and giving them a direction forward.

But when the new designated player extension was added to the collective bargaining agreement, Westbrook was made retroactively eligible (along with Harden), and suddenly, hes back to making a decision about his future.

This time, though, without any fallout of a departed co-star, or potential threat of an imminent trade should he reject it.

Westbrook built a brand on being the guy who stayed, and produced a season of vengeful validation that set history and won him the MVP award.

He went from a polarizing star who carried around a crowd of critics, to one of the leagues most revered and popular players. The expectation since free agency opened was Westbrook would ink the extension, and it remains as such.

Yet with almost a month and a half to go before the deadline, Westbrook hasnt committed. The Thunders offer is on the table, and has been for some time. As Thunder GM Sam Presti said in July, this isnt really a negotiation.

Either Westbrook takes it, or he doesnt. According to sources with knowledge of the situation, Westbrook hasnt delivered an official answer -- either a yes or a no. Though the chatter and anxiety might be steadily increasing, nothing has tangibly changed.

If Westbrook can stomach the constant questions and speculation, he could wait until next year, opt out and hit the open market.

The money is the same this summer or the next for Westbrook even with the extension rules, because hed hit the 10-year threshold (assuming he re-signs with OKC). He could wait and get effectively the same deal.

The primary difference, and it could be key, is the years. The rules of the designated player extension stipulate a minimum of five years (with only a player option available for Year 5).

Signing that deal would put Westbrook under contract until hes 34 years old. If he waited until next summer, he could sign a two- or three-year deal, and hit free agency again at 31 or 32.

In terms of inking another mega contract after this one, Westbrook could be factoring in life at 32, versus 34. And considering the style and physical brutality he plays with, Westbrook at 32 versus 34 could look quite different.

(Theres also the difference that if Westbrook wanted a no-trade clause, hed have to wait until signing a new contract next summer.).

But theres one sticky issue. Last summer when Westbrook signed his extension, he said this: Theres nowhere else I would rather be than Oklahoma City. Theres no need to wait if you know where you want to be..

If he turns down $207 million guaranteed, even with the contract factors of years and age, does that signal he doesnt know where he wants to be anymore? That come next summer, he might have an eye elsewhere? Not necessarily, but it surely doesnt give the Thunder a lot of confidence, especially after watching Durant walk away in free agency last summer after affirming and re-affirming his loyalty to the organization, both publicly and privately.

The question youre asking next is if the Thunder would trade Westbrook should he reject the extension.

It would be the pragmatic, albeit ruthless move, but in acquiring Paul George, Presti signaled an all-in belief in this current roster and season. The Thunder arent thinking about any Westbrook trade, regardless of this summers decision.

There has been zero indication, or any kind of whispering from anyone close to Westbrook that hes thinking of signing elsewhere in 2018.

Theres a lot of time between now and Oct. As those close to Westbrook repeat often, he does things his own way, and in his own time. When hes ready, hell make the call. He hasnt rejected any offer yet.

He hasnt directly informed the Thunder of anything. He has almost two months left to let them know, and he might take all of it to do it. Westbrook is a new dad, and is enjoying his summertime.

The Thunder open training camp on Sept. 26, which puts Westbrook back in OKC for the season.

Theres a belief he could be waiting until then, when hes back to work for the year ahead, to lock in and make something official -- one way or the other.

Australian Survivor model Sarah Tilleke set for big future as she moves to Melbourne - Duration: 1:58.

Australian Survivor model Sarah Tilleke set for big future as she moves to Melbourne

GLAMOROUS model Sarah Tilleke, who is one of the favourites on Australian Survivor, has moved to Melbourne after a brutal few weeks filming the show in Samoa.

The 22-year-old model isn't new to television — she came runner up on modelling reality show The Face in 2014, and found a fan in the star of that show, super model Naomi Campbell.

The former Perth beauty, who is represented by top Australian modelling agency Vivien's Model Management, said it made sense for her to move to Melbourne.

"Pretty much after Survivor, I was supposed to go to New York but with the show on in Australia, I thought about it, and I wanted to be here for that," she said.

"I've always loved Melbourne, and I've always wanted to be among it. "There is so much great work here, and I think while I ride out the Survivor wave, why not live in Melbourne at the same time?.

"Travelling is part of my life, so it's kind of like this is the next City for now. Since coming runner up on The Face, Tilleke has modelled around the world.

Picture: Alex Coppel.Source:News Limited. She described her experience on Australian Survivor as different to The Face. "For The Face it just happened," she said. "An email came through and work was a bit quiet at the time, so I went for it.

"With Survivor, it's something I've always watched, and when there were auditions for the show, there was no question for me, I wanted to get on.

"It wasn't like I wanted to go on another reality show, it was something I really wanted to do because I love the game. Tilleke described her experience on Australian Survivor as incredible.

"It was absolutely life changing," she said. "I came out of it more connected about who I was. I really understood what I wanted out of life.

"I think when you go through those challenges and come out of the other end, you realise a lot about yourself. "If nothing else, it has taught me so much about myself, and that is a massive reward.

"I couldn't be more grateful to be on the show.

Dream concept becomes reality: Aston Martin Vanquish Zagato enters limited production for 2017 - Duration: 2:35.

Dream concept becomes reality: Aston Martin Vanquish Zagato enters limited production for 2017

Remember the rather stunning Aston Martin Vanquish Zagato concept car, revealed at Villa d'Este?. Aston Martin has now announced the car will go into a limited series production run of 99 cars, built to order at the company's Gaydon factory.

Aston Martin says the production run is the result of 'unprecedented customer interest', and the road car's styling has been kept as close as possible to the Villa d'Este concept – complete with the Italian styling house Zagato's trademark 'double-bubble' roof.

Customer deliveries start in the first quarter of 2017. Does the Vanquish Zagato go as fast as it looks?.

If the numbers are anything to go by, it certainly does. The Vanquish's long-serving 5.9-litre naturally aspirated V12 has been tuned to a maximum output of 592bhp, allowing a projected 0-60mph time of 3.5sec.

The Zagato gets its own suspension setup too, giving it a 'uniquely GT driving experience' compared with the regular Vanquish, says Aston.

And if the sound in the below promo video is anything to go by, it sounds as good as it looks, too.

The bodywork is made from carbonfibre and created predominantly from large one-piece panels to avoid unsightly shutlines. It's unlikely to be cheap, then.

The regular Vanquish currently starts from around £190,000 and an asking price for the 99-off Zagato variant has yet to be disclosed. If you have to ask, etc….

And now for something completely different: Rolls-Royce Vision Next 100 concept unveiled - Duration: 5:16.

And now for something completely different: Rolls-Royce Vision Next 100 concept unveiled

No, youre not looking at a film prop from a long-forgotten mid-2000s sci-fi film. Instead, this new concept – dubbed Vision Next 100 – represents Rolls-Royces vision of the future of luxury mobility. Are you sure this isnt from 2002s Minority Report?.

Very certain – unless theres been an accident with a photocopier and a time machine. The newly revealed concept, codenamed 103EX, is designed to showcase what may lay ahead for the company in the next 100 years.

BMW celebrates its centenary this year, so the BMW Group – of which Rolls-Royce Motor Cars is a part – has rolled out the Vision Next 100 project to investigate at the future of its brands products.

BMW itself, and Mini, have also built concepts with the same title as part of the centenary-related developments. So whats so special about this? Looks aside, that is.

Its an all-electric, carbonfibre-based autonomous coupe, with 28-inch wheels – ones that are assembled from 65 individual pieces of aluminium, at that. You wont have to hire a chauffeur, either, or – heavens forbid – actually attempt to drive it yourself.

Rolls-Royce surmises that the concept would be controlled by an AI called Eleanor, after the model on whom the Spirit of Ecstasy was based.

This AI would function as an assistant and driver, studying owners schedules and ensuring the car was ready – and in the right place – as and when necessary.

The AI can be conversed with, and other information relayed via the large OLED-based screen. One other particularly interesting element of the concept is what Rolls calls The Personal Vision.

It has interior mirrors, then?. Not that kind of personal vision. One of the reasons Rolls-Royce has produced this concept is to demonstrate how, in the future, it believes coachbuilding will continue to thrive.

Thats because the company envisions advanced manufacturing, design and prototyping methods allowing customers to become much more involved in the styling and detailing of the car. This would result in a much more personal and individual product.

This, in part, will be made far easier through the use of more flexible zero local emissions powertrains, which are easier to integrate and position within the vehicle.

Torsten Müller-Ötvös, CEO of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, said: The arrival of the Rolls-Royce Vision Next 100 boldly points to a bright future for our marque where our patrons' individual demands for complete and authentic personalisation will be met through an exquisite fusion of technology, design and hallmark Rolls-Royce craftsmanship.

What other tricks does it have up its sleeve?. The concept sports whats referred to as The Grand Arrival. Basically, its a look at me mode.

When the car comes to a halt at its destination, the Spirit of Ecstasy and grille illuminate, followed by a creeping underbody glow, then the glass canopy tilts upwards – its hinged on the offside of the vehicle.

This allows you to stand, under cover, to make your exit from the vehicle more graceful.

Next, the single coach door opens automatically while a step emerges from the running board. As a finishing touch, a red glow emanates from underneath the step. So, at least you wont have to haul any carpet around.

Based on the concepts looks alone, however, were not sure youd need to do anything to draw any more attention.

Given how motoring, technology and manufacturing are developing, however, its understandable why Rolls-Royce is looking at ways to ensure its vehicles remain noteworthy and desirable in the future.

Thailand on edge for Yingluck trial verdict - Duration: 10:33.

Thailand on edge for Yingluck trial verdict

Six years ago Yingluck Shinawatra, a novice who had only been in politics for two months, led the Pheu Thai party, founded and funded by her older brother Thaksin, to a resounding election victory.

It was a stunning result for a party which had seen two previous administrations overthrown by a coup and a controversial court decision, and whose supporters had just the year before been involved in an occupation of Bangkok, which ended in bloodshed.

An essential part of Ms Yinglucks winning manifesto was a generous promise to rice farmers. That is at the heart of the legal case against her.

Image copyright Reuters Image caption Rice farming has always been central to the Thai economy and way of life.

Under the new scheme the government was supposed to buy the entire rice crop, and pay 15,000 baht (£350; $450) per tonne, well above the 11,000 baht guaranteed by the previous government. It was wildly popular with farmers.

But economists and agricultural experts immediately questioned its viability.

The price of 15,000 baht was significantly higher than the global rice price, and Thailand exports more of its crop than any other country - it was the worlds number one rice exporter at the time.

Its principal rivals India and Vietnam, it was predicted, would simply increase their exports at Thailands expense, offering a price much lower than the Thai government could, unless it was willing to incur huge losses.

And there were many warnings that the scheme was vulnerable to corruption. Six years later Ms Yingluck faces a possible 10-year prison sentence on charges of malfeasance, or dereliction of duty, over the rice scheme.

She has not been charged with corruption, but with failing to prevent it, in her capacity as prime minister and as chair of the National Rice Policy Committee.

If convicted she could be permanently banned from politics - she has already been banned for five years after being impeached in 2015.   Image copyright Getty Images Image caption Yingluck Shinawatra was ousted by a military takeover in 2014.

Unsurprisingly Ms Yingluck and her party have cried foul. After all her government was overthrown, in 2014, by the same army officers who now run Thailand.

They justified their coup by the need to restore order, but had conspicuously failed to offer her support as she faced sustained protests in Bangkok, which had crippled her administration.

The military is not seen as impartial, and it wields authoritarian powers, even extending to judicial cases.

The rice scheme was inordinately expensive and wasteful. The exact cost, of rice that rotted in storage, that was stolen or improperly sold, is still disputed.

But the government estimates it cost the state at least $8bn - some estimates go as high as $20bn, although these include the overall cost of the subsidy, not just losses through corruption and mismanagement.

The scheme did raise farmers living standards, but was almost certainly unsustainable. There is plenty of anecdotal evidence of corruption, although few cases have yet gone to court.

The best-known case, in which a former commerce minister and 27 other defendants are accused of an allegedly fraudulent government-to-government deal to sell rice to China, will conclude on the same day Ms Yingluck hears her verdict.

Ms Yingluck argued in court that she was not responsible for day-to-day running of the scheme, and that as a key policy platform when she was elected she could not order it to be cancelled.

She pointed to what she believes are multiple procedural flaws in the case.   Image copyright EPA Image caption Ms Yingluck remains hugely popular and there are fears imprisonment could boost it further.

Whatever the merits of the case against her, few observers doubt that the military government wants to see Thaksin Shinawatras political movement weakened before it allows the restoration of some kind of democracy.

Ms Yingluck is very popular, and an effective vote-winner. With Mr Thaksin entering his 10th year of exile, his party is struggling to find a replacement leader. But her fate presents Thailands current rulers with some dilemmas.

Image copyright PA Image caption Thaksin Shinawatra has been living in self-imposed exile to avoid a jail term for corruption.

If she is acquitted Mr Thaksin, who is protective of his younger sister, might be emboldened to push for a greater share of power in a post-election Thailand than the military is willing to accept.

An acquittal would outrage hard-line conservatives, and those who led the protests against the Yingluck government. If she is sent to prison, hard-line opponents of the Shinawatra clan would be satisfied, and she would be completely removed from politics.

Convicting her would also help the generals to justify their coup, as part of a fight against corruption. But it risks making the telegenic Ms Yingluck into a symbol of resistance for the so-called red-shirt mass movement that supports her.

Red-shirt leaders acknowledge that mobilising large-scale protests against a conviction would be difficult under a military government. They have ruled out any repeat of the occupation of central Bangkok that ended so badly seven years ago.

But they say they would view a conviction as the first shot in a re-ignited conflict with the military, as an end to any pretence of reconciliation. And they do not rule out localised demonstrations of anger by Ms Yinglucks supporters.

Image copyright AFP Image caption A lavish pyre is being built in Bangkok for the cremation ceremony for the beloved late king.

This worries the government, because it wants calm in the run-up to the elaborate cremation of the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej in October.

It will also need to be mindful of the wishes of King Vajiralongkorn, who is expected to hold a coronation ceremony not long after the cremation.

A possible compromise might be a suspended prison sentence for Ms Yingluck. This is possible if she receives less than five years.

Even if she is given a custodial sentence, government legal experts say she can appeal. But that would depend on her. She might choose not to.

Behind all of this lies the jostling for a new balance of power once the generals allow an election to take place.   Image copyright EPA Image caption It remains unclear what involvement the new king will want to have in politics.

In that election, polls suggest Pheu Thai will be the largest party, as it has been in every election since 2001, although the new electoral system will almost certainly ensure it does not win a majority of seats in the lower house of parliament.

But the political parties will have to contend with a 250-seat senate entirely appointed by the military, and with a military-drafted reform blueprint for the next 20 years, which all governments are legally required to honour.

In this environment no-one is sure who is in line to be the next prime minister. In the past in Thailand, elected governments were able to concentrate a lot of power and patronage in their hands.

That will no longer be the case.

Some in Pheu Thai believe it might actually be better for the party to have a spell in opposition - that the first elected government will be so constrained by the courts and the generals it is not a prize worth having.

The military itself is factionalised, and it is not clear that the current ruling clique will remain dominant. Another important unknown is what King Vajiralongkorn wants.

The intimidating shadow of the lese majeste law makes any discussion of his role impossible in Thailand, but he has already made it clear that he wishes to be consulted on important decisions, and that he is willing to exercise his influence in ways that his father did not.

He may prove to be one of the most important factors in reshaping Thailands future.
