Former world champion Amir Khan doesn't paint rosy picture for boxing if Conor McGregor wins

Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor took to the stage at T-Mobile Arena to weigh in Friday (August 25) afternoon with McGregor tipping the scales at 153 pounds (69.3 kilograms) and Mayweather nearly four pounds lighter at 149-1/2 (67.8 kgs).

Can Conor McGregor upstage Floyd Mayweather?. AMIR Khan claims boxing will be finished if Conor McGregor defeats Floyd Mayweather. Britain's former world light-welterweight champ Khan says it would be disastrous for his sport if UFC king McGregor defeats the unbeaten Money Man.

Yet Khan, who has been out of the ring since being knocked out by Canelo Alvarez in May 2016, admits he would take a fight with McGregor if he makes a decent fist of the Mayweather scrap – with the Irishman being lined up to fight in front of 80,000 at Dublin's Croke Park.

Khan, 30, said: "Yes it would be bad for boxing if McGregor. It's a disaster, big time. "If McGregor wins, boxing is over. I can't see him winning though. To have this fight will take whichever sport to a different level.

"The winner of this will give the fans an idea of which sport to follow and which sport is better. If Mayweather wins the boxing goes on a high, if McGregor wins then people will follow Mixed Martial Arts.".

Can Conor McGregor upstage Floyd Mayweather?Source:AFP. Khan is ready to return after three operations on an injured hand – and McGregor could be on his radar.

He said: "If McGregor wins (against Mayweather) it moves the goalposts. "You'd take the fight because it's a big name. To do a fight like that in the UK would be massive.

"I'd even go to Ireland and fight him there. You might beat him in the ring but walking out of the ring might be a bit of an issue!.

Amir Khan worries for the future of his sport if McGregor wins.

"Let's see how he does. I was speaking to Paulie Malignaggi (who has sparred McGregor) and he said he is really bad at boxing but he does throw some good shots in MMA.

"But (the popularity of) UFC should be a warning to boxing to step up its game. There are a lot of titles out there. In UFC there is only one champion which makes it harder for them.

"I think this fight is good for boxing. I think boxing needs this. The PPV numbers have been s**t recently. Boxing needs a fight like this to get the sport back up again.

NBA TV-NBA Highlights-No apparent rush for Westbrook in becoming NBA's No. 1 earner

It has been nearly two months since Russell Westbrook could agree to the fancy new designated veteran player extension with the Oklahoma City Thunder that would make him the highest paid player in league history.

In that time, a lot of stuff has happened in the NBA -- a lot of stuff -- that has taken what was one of the biggest storylines entering the offseason and put it on the backdrop.

But in the middle of it all, James Harden signed the same mega-extension with the Rockets, John Wall took a five-year offer from the Wizards and Stephen Curry re-signed with the Warriors for $200-plus million.

Westbrook has bounced between Los Angeles and Oklahoma City a number of times this summer, and hasnt taken the offer. The deadline is the last day before the regular season starts -- Oct.

16 -- and with each passing day, the anxiety builds in OKC. Why hasnt Westbrook accepted the deal that would pay him $207 million over five years?.

When Westbrook agreed to an extension last summer (with a player option on the final year), and talked about loyalty and his affinity for the Thunder, he didnt know the new designated player extension was coming.

He thought he was signing a deal that extended him to the 10-year veteran max, a bump to 35 percent of his teams cap.

He thought hed play out two more seasons, and then revisit his future in free agency in the summer of 2018. He was making a commitment to the Thunder in the wake of Kevin Durants departure, and giving them a direction forward.

But when the new designated player extension was added to the collective bargaining agreement, Westbrook was made retroactively eligible (along with Harden), and suddenly, hes back to making a decision about his future.

This time, though, without any fallout of a departed co-star, or potential threat of an imminent trade should he reject it.

Westbrook built a brand on being the guy who stayed, and produced a season of vengeful validation that set history and won him the MVP award.

He went from a polarizing star who carried around a crowd of critics, to one of the leagues most revered and popular players. The expectation since free agency opened was Westbrook would ink the extension, and it remains as such.

Yet with almost a month and a half to go before the deadline, Westbrook hasnt committed. The Thunders offer is on the table, and has been for some time. As Thunder GM Sam Presti said in July, this isnt really a negotiation.

Either Westbrook takes it, or he doesnt. According to sources with knowledge of the situation, Westbrook hasnt delivered an official answer -- either a yes or a no. Though the chatter and anxiety might be steadily increasing, nothing has tangibly changed.

If Westbrook can stomach the constant questions and speculation, he could wait until next year, opt out and hit the open market.

The money is the same this summer or the next for Westbrook even with the extension rules, because hed hit the 10-year threshold (assuming he re-signs with OKC). He could wait and get effectively the same deal.

The primary difference, and it could be key, is the years. The rules of the designated player extension stipulate a minimum of five years (with only a player option available for Year 5).

Signing that deal would put Westbrook under contract until hes 34 years old. If he waited until next summer, he could sign a two- or three-year deal, and hit free agency again at 31 or 32.

In terms of inking another mega contract after this one, Westbrook could be factoring in life at 32, versus 34. And considering the style and physical brutality he plays with, Westbrook at 32 versus 34 could look quite different.

(Theres also the difference that if Westbrook wanted a no-trade clause, hed have to wait until signing a new contract next summer.).

But theres one sticky issue. Last summer when Westbrook signed his extension, he said this: Theres nowhere else I would rather be than Oklahoma City. Theres no need to wait if you know where you want to be..

If he turns down $207 million guaranteed, even with the contract factors of years and age, does that signal he doesnt know where he wants to be anymore? That come next summer, he might have an eye elsewhere? Not necessarily, but it surely doesnt give the Thunder a lot of confidence, especially after watching Durant walk away in free agency last summer after affirming and re-affirming his loyalty to the organization, both publicly and privately.

The question youre asking next is if the Thunder would trade Westbrook should he reject the extension.

It would be the pragmatic, albeit ruthless move, but in acquiring Paul George, Presti signaled an all-in belief in this current roster and season. The Thunder arent thinking about any Westbrook trade, regardless of this summers decision.

There has been zero indication, or any kind of whispering from anyone close to Westbrook that hes thinking of signing elsewhere in 2018.

Theres a lot of time between now and Oct. As those close to Westbrook repeat often, he does things his own way, and in his own time. When hes ready, hell make the call. He hasnt rejected any offer yet.

He hasnt directly informed the Thunder of anything. He has almost two months left to let them know, and he might take all of it to do it. Westbrook is a new dad, and is enjoying his summertime.

The Thunder open training camp on Sept. 26, which puts Westbrook back in OKC for the season.

Theres a belief he could be waiting until then, when hes back to work for the year ahead, to lock in and make something official -- one way or the other.

McIlroy gives prediction for Mayweather-McGregor

– Rory McIlroy finished off his third-round 69 early on Saturday at The Northern Trust, which gave him plenty of time to prepare for the day's main event.

Earlier this week, McIlroy talked at length, and with a good amount of knowledge, about tonight's Floyd Mayweather vs.  Conor McGregor fight in Las Vegas.

Following his round, which moved him into a tie for 37th place, McIlroy said he was looking forward to finally seeing the bout, but he wasn't holding out much hope that McGregor could upset Mayweather, an overwhelming favorite to win.

"We were talking about it all the way around out there," McIlroy said. "I can see him not being able to hit him for five or six rounds, getting frustrated, getting tired and Floyd will pick him off.

I wish it was the other way, I can't imagine what it would be like if he does actually knock him down.".

McIlroy also offered a prediction: "I think Floyd will win by TKO in the seventh or eighth round. I think that's the more likely outcome.".
