MIT's Interactive Robogami for Designing custom robots in a matter of minutes | QPT - Duration: 3:45.
Even as robots become increasingly common across different parts of our world, they
remain incredibly difficult to make.
From designing and modeling to fabricating and testing, the process is slow and costly:
even one small change can mean days or weeks of rethinking and revising important hardware.
But what if there was a way to let non-experts craft different robotic designs -- in one
sitting?
Researchers from MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL)
are getting closer to doing exactly that.
In a new paper, they present a system called "Interactive Robogami" that lets you design
a robot in minutes, and then 3D-print and assemble it in as little as four hours.
One of the key features of the system is that it allows designers to determine both the
robot's movement ("gait") and shape ("geometry"), a capability that's often separated in design
systems.
3D-printing has transformed the way that people can turn ideas into real objects, allowing
users to move away from more traditional manufacturing.
Despite these developments, current design tools still have space and motion limitations,
and there's a steep learning curve to understanding the various nuances.
Interactive Robogami aims to be much more intuitive.
It uses simulations and interactive feedback with algorithms for design composition, allowing
users to focus on high-level conceptual design.
Users can choose from a library of over 50 different bodies, wheels, legs and "peripherals,"
as well as a selection of different steps ("gaits").
Importantly, the system is able to guarantee that a design is actually possible, analyzing
factors such as speed and stability to make suggestions and ensure that, for example,
the user doesn't create a robot so top-heavy that it can't move without tipping over.
Once designed, the robot is then fabricated.
The team's origami-inspired "3-D print and fold" technique involves printing the design
as flat faces connected at joints, and then folding the design into the final shape, combining
the most effective parts of 2D and 3D printing.
To test the system, the team used eight subjects who were given twenty minutes of training
and asked to perform two tasks.
One task involved creating a mobile, stable car design in just ten minutes.
In a second task, users were given a robot design and asked to create a trajectory to
navigate the robot through an obstacle course in the least amount of travel time.
The team fabricated a total of six robots, each of which took 10 to 15 minutes to design,
3 to 7 hours to print and 30 to 90 minutes to assemble.
The team found that their 3D print-and-fold method reduced printing time by 73 percent
and the amount of material used by 70 percent.
The robots also demonstrated a wide range of movement, like using single legs to walk,
using different step sequences, and using legs and wheels simultaneously.

How 'Make in India' could impede India's global hunt for anti-ship missiles - Duration: 4:04.
Welcome to World Action and Reaction News, todays News is.
How Make in India could impede Indias global hunt for anti-ship missiles
Credit : Defensenews.com
India has launched first-ever global hunt for anti-ship missiles with a budget of $1
billion.
But a requirement for those missiles, to be built by domestic companies, could be difficult
to meet. The medium-range anti-ship missiles must be capable of engaging fast-maneuvering
targets within Indias exclusive economic zone in all weather conditions, and have land-attack
capability.
A formal tender will be issued by mid-2018, and India hopes to negotiate a quick delivery
of the product.Indias Ministry of Defence wants the production license rights after
it receives a transfer of technology for the medium-range anti-ship missiles.
Although no domestic company in India has ever manufactured an anti-ship missile, the
MoD will award the contract to a local business as part of the Make in India policy; a foreign
vendor will then have to tie up with the domestic company and bid for the tender, an MoD official
explained.
The domestic companies likely to participate include private sector firms Reliance Defence
Engineering Limited, Bharat Forge, and Larsen & Toubro, as well as state-owned Bharat Dynamics
Limited.
Though the MoD may be keen to take this RFI through the Make in India route, there
is currently no ecosystem for complete missile system manufacturing other than some work
done by few public and private sector companies, an Indian Navy official said.
MoD must be very careful before taking through this prospective program through the
Make In India route, as the same will have a huge implications on costs and timelines.
He cautioned: A missile system is more like a complete platform with complex web
of subsystems dependent upon a large supply chain.
To justify transfer of technology for major subsystems for number of missiles specified
in RFI will be a near-about-impossible task to accomplish.
Anti-ship missiles currently deployed on large Indian Navy frigates and destroyers include
the Indo-Russian BrahMos supersonic cruise missile as well as Russian-made Kh-35 and
3M Klub anti-ship missile variants.
The service also uses American-made Harpoon anti-ship missiles on its German HDW-class
submarines and on eight Boeing P-8I aircraft.
Saab of Sweden, Rosoboronexport of Russia, Israel Aerospace Industries of Israel, Raytheon
of the U.S. and MBDA of France are expected to participate in the competition, an MoD
official said.
The request for information issued in the middle of August was for the purchase of 270
combat, 40 practice, 10 training, six dummy and four cut-section medium-range anti-ship
missiles, plus 24 systems for fitment on board warships.
The missiles will be mounted on a variety of warships.
The requirement would be 1,000-plus missiles, as they have dual-use concept for anti-ship
and for land target, too, a senior Navy official said.
The new medium-range missiles will replace Russian-made Kh-35 variants.
The first phase, according to the RFI, will be worth $276 million.
The Indian Navy is slated to induct new anti-ships missiles in 2024.

Why Walking Barefoot Is Good For Your Health - Duration: 2:01.
In this video, you will learn about, why walking barefoot is good for your health.
Walking barefoot is also known as earthing or grounding.
Walking barefoot has lots of health benefits such as it reduced inflammation, increases
antioxidants and improves the sleep.
Earthing simply means walking barefoot on grass and sand.
The earthing increases the surface charge of red blood cells and as a result of which
the viscosity of blood decreases and thereby the chances of heart diseases decreases.
Walking barefoot reduces the blood pressure as it stimulates the nerve endings on the
bottom of the feet.
Walking barefoot improves the balance and strength of the body due to the touch with
the ground.
Walking barefoot helps in improving circulation of blood in your feet and legs.
When this happens you will have less aches and pains and less varicose veins.
Walking barefoot helps in improving the quality of sleep.
Due to the contact with earth, the negative ions increases, which are helpful in improving
sleep.
When you walk barefoot, the nerves on the bottom of your feet gets stimulated and as
a result your immune system become strong, inflammation gets reduced and blood pressure
gets decreased.
When we begin walking barefoot, run, jog and play with just our feet, we begin to strengthen
our ankles, feet and toes.
We hope you are now aware of the benefits of walking barefoot.
So start doing it.
For the first few days, start small and then increase gradually.

Trump Wants To Make It OK For Nursing Homes To Abuse The Elderly - Duration: 3:59.
If you had any question about whether or not Donald Trump honestly was the most heartless
person to ever hold the office of the presidency, take a look at this.
During the Obama years, Obama, towards the end of his term, created a regulation that
said nursing homes can no longer use forced arbitration clauses when signing a contract
for a new person to come live in a nursing home.
What that means, when you sign that arbitration clause, is that if they do anything bad to
you, if they screw up, if they hurt you intentionally or otherwise, you cannot take them to court.
Obama said, "You know what, that's pretty unfair.
That's pretty screwed up.
We're going to do away with it."
Now, his regulation never actually went into effect, or technically has not gone into effect
yet, but Donald Trump has decided, at the urging of the US Chamber of Commerce, to get
rid of that regulation altogether.
To put it in its simplest terms, Donald Trump doesn't want your grandparents or your parents
or your great grandparents, whoever it is living in a nursing home, to be able to sue
that nursing home when they abuse or neglect or do something that gets them killed.
Now, you may not think that this is a big problem, but it is.
For every one case of a nursing home abuse that is reported, it's estimated that another
five go unreported.
One out of six nursing home residents in the United States, one out of six, has reported
some form of abuse.
Many have been forced to actually call 911 from their own personal cellphones while in
the nursing home, due to the treatment that they have received from the nursing home employee.
75% of cases reported have been of employees physically or emotionally or even financially
abusing nursing home residents.
There has been instances where nursing home caregivers have taken the financial information
from their patients and literally stolen money from them.
They've wired the money out of their retirement accounts into the employee's accounts.
These people, some of them have Alzheimer's they don't quite know until the family finds
out, after the person passes away, that grandma or grandpa's pension fund has been pilfered
for a decade by a greedy nursing home employee.
Nursing home abuse happens all the time.
One out of three nursing homes in the United States during a recent study was cited for
either physical abuse, financial abuse or dangerous conditions that could lead to personal
injury or death for nursing home residents.
That's about as serious as it gets, and Donald Trump doesn't want the elderly, who are the
most vulnerable of our population, to be able to take these people to court when they screw
them over.
Instead, he wants to send them in front of an arbitration panel.
Do you know what that means?
It means they're going to go in front of corporate-friendly arbitrators, have to pay an exorbitant amount
of money, and 80% of the time they lose.
This is great for corporations, and that's why the US Chamber of Commerce is supporting
it, but it is basically a death sentence for the elderly population of the United States.
Again, if you don't think Donald Trump is the most heartless person to ever hold the
office of the presidency, at least during our lifetimes, then I suggest you check out
this story because it is one of the truly most disgusting things that I have seen from
this administration in these short seven months.

Carl Jenkinson understands he might have to quit Arsenal to play for England - Duration: 3:38.
Carl Jenkinson understands he might have to quit Arsenal to play for England
But the full-back knows he might have to quit the Gunners to keep his international ambitions alive. The 25-year-old won his only full cap almost five years ago but he insists he has not given up on adding to his collection.
That is despite making just one Premier League appearance last season for the Gunners and dropping down a division to join Harry Redknapp's Birmingham.
"My main ambition to play for England again," said Jenkinson, who could make his Blues debut at home to Reading today.
"That's something that's in the back of my mind and getting back playing this season is going to be a stepping stone towards that. "I want to crack on and play at the highest level again.
Whether that's at Arsenal or whether I end up moving on time will tell, but I'm not focusing too much past this season.
"I'd love to play for England again and in the back of my mind I really believe I can do that.
"But for the time being I've just got to focus on the short term and that's playing regularly here and hopefully I can push on from that." Jenkinson played for England against Sweden in November 2012 but his Arsenal career soon stalled and he left for two loan spells with West Ham.
He returned to fitness last season after a cruciate knee ligament injury but was frozen out by Gunners manager Arsene Wenger.
And the former Charlton defender admits he might now have to leave the Emirates Stadium permanently to get his career back on track.
He said: "My career to a certain extent was at a standstill last season because I wasn't playing, so you take a step back and reset your goals and think about what you really want to achieve in the rest of your career.
"I would love to pull on an England shirt again and that's one of the goals I set myself for the rest of my career - to get back to that level. "I've still got three years left at Arsenal.
I might have to look elsewhere but I'm not looking past this season. "I'll assess where I am at the end of the season.
I've vowed to myself I just want to be playing football now. "I've had a spell out and I want to make sure I'm playing football for the rest of my career, wherever that is.
"I like to think I've still got seven or eight years where I can play at the top level. But I'm 25 now, I'm not a kid anymore, so I need to be playing every week.
"I've got a lot of friends who have played in the Championship and I know it's tough but I also know there's a lot of quality. "I am looking forward to tasting it week in, week out.".

How to make a Cardboard Castle - STEM Activity for Kids - Duration: 5:04.
How to make a Cardboard Castle - STEM Activity for Kids
First we need to make a base for our castle.
You can use any flat cardboard and cut it to the size of your future Castle.
Now to make our towers. Cut one Cardboard in half.
And make a little cut at 3/4 of a tube.
Now you can attach it to other tube and one tower is almost done.
Decorate your tower any way you wish.
Now for the roof.
Use divider and measure few inches more than cardboard tube diameter.
Draw circles (you will need 4 of them) and cut them.
Mark a center because will have to cut a piece.
Now cut a piece and make a shape of a Pac-Man.
Now you can easily make a cone.
You can use glue or staple for cone to keep it's shape.
Let's make a bigger tower. Take two tubes together to make one identical cut.
Now you can connect two tubes easily to make a higher tower.
Decorate as you wish.
To make walls, we will measure the hight with one of our towers.
And cut the wall out of a cardboard.
When we are satisfied with our wall we can decorate it.
Must not forget the entrance.
Attach your walls and towers together.
We used hot glue but you can use any other good cardboard glue.
And our castle is starting to look like something.
But we can decorate it a little bit more.
Let's have some fun with flags.
Cut little rectangular pieces of paper and make flags.
Use glue and toothpicks to finalize the flag.
And we can easily put them on the roof.
BONUS Challenge: Can you design and make your own drawbridge?
Thanks for watching. Now Castle just needs his King or Queen.

Why Walking Barefoot on the Beach Is Good for Your Health - Duration: 1:31.
In this video, you will learn about, why walking barefoot on the beach is good for your health.
Walking barefoot on the beach is a pleasurable activity.
The ambience of a beach is very welcoming.
In a beach, softer and deeper sand is more challenging than firmer sand.
Walking barefoot on uneven surfaces such as the beach or sand strengthens and stretches
the muscles, tendons and ligaments in your feet, ankles, legs, hips, and back.
Walking barefoot helps in fine-tuning your body's proprioceptive mechanism by increasing
the number of nerve endings firing signals to the brain and as a result improving your
balance.
Walking barefoot on the beach helps in improving the balance and proprioception and reduces
the risk of falling.
It improves your gait by teaching you how to walk properly and also improves the body
posture.
Walking barefoot on beach helps in clearing your mind and connects you to with the earth
and nature.
And finally it helps in decreasing the anxiety and helps with depression and insomnia.
