We are back on "Access
Hollywood live" with Jared Leto.
That is "Closer to the edge,"
one of the biggest hits from his
band, 30 seconds to Mars.
The video is filled with footage
from the band's live
performances.
Put the guys in the guinness
book of world records.
Okay.
So how is this possible?
You guys played a total of 309
concerts in two years,
like, how did you survive that?
Barely.
It's a good thing to do if you
want to lose your mind.
We'll never do it again.
But we were just so excited to
have the opportunity to play
these incredible places around
the world.
And 30 seconds to Mars has spent
a lot of time outside the U.S.
touring from Asia to Australia
to the Middle East to Europe to
Africa.
We have spent quite a bit of
time on the road.
Road dogs, if you will.
So we had a blast doing it.
What was your favorite moment
from the tour?
I remember playing in
Lebanon.
I remember one time we arrived - in Lebanon,
and we all watched
the sunrise over the water.
And, you know, magical moments
like that.
The audiences in Oman, playing
in Paris.
The 02 at London.
We just played Kazakhstan, the
very first open-air stadium show
ever in that country.
So in a way when you're on tour
you're a bit of an explorer and
you get to see places and
experience cultures that you
never would have dreamed of.
Yeah.
Are you more of a musician
now than you are actor, or what
do you favor?
I'm a creative person.
I have a deep love of the music.
My brother and I have shared
this band since we were kids.
And it's just -- you know, the
impossible has happened.
And we have been able to do this
for so long now, it's such a
gift.
So it's hard to beat standing on
stage at the Hollywood Bowl, and
playing a show.
So -- but I do love -- I love
film as well.
I like seeing you on stage,
because to me, we're seeing more
of you.
You're unbelievable, how you can
meld into your characters on
screen?
So the Jared Leto we see from
"30 seconds to Mars" is more
you.
We were talking about bands
staying together.
Like, how have you guys done it?
I know Shannon you can't get rid
of, he's your brother.
But it's hard to keep a band
together.
It is hard to keep a band
together.
It's a marriage.
And as we all know, it takes a
lot of work.
But we're in a really great
place, and we have been for a
long time.
I think we all share a common
goal.
And we have such passion for it.
And I think we're just so blown
away by the success that we've
had and the people that we get
to play in front of every night
are so passionate, they're so
absolutely nuts.
And the best way possible.
And that keeps us going.
Where does the name, 30
seconds to Mars, where did that
come from?
A fortune cookie.
Yeah.
You know, the name, I think, has
always been fun for us, because,
you know, right from the get-go,
oh, this is something different.
But, you know, we're all kind of
barely sleeping these days,
because "Walk on water" is out.
And we worked on this song for
three years.
And I just put a gospel choir on
it like two weeks ago.
I just finished the lyrics like
five days ago and turned the
song into the label just a few
days ago.
And now it's all over the world.
People are hearing it.
It's number three on iTunes
right now.
It's trending, yeah.
And college football season
hasn't even started.
It's a hopeful song.
It is.
It's a song about optimism.
About freedom, about unity,
which is, you know, something I
think we could all use a little
bit more of.
I like the picture you put up
on your Instagram, because we
have been waiting.
It's been four years before the
new music.
It's you at the piano as a
little guy, and you're like,
just working on the next song.
And it was really cute.
I said, yeah, this is when I
started work on "Walk on water."
Yeah.
So I guess it was the tour
that took all of that time?
No, I'm just slow.
It's just slow.
It's elusive, making art.
It's never -- it's never polite.
It's never timely.
And you have to listen and be
patient.
It's like a child, you know.
How many times are you going to
give them a chance to walk --
no, that's it.
You have to just really embrace
the process.
Speaking of children, I read
recently you were saying maybe
down the road some children for
you.
And talking about -- we
always talk about women's ages.
Look at his face, Natalie.
You don't even have crow's feet,
Jared.
There's no wrinkles.
What's the key?
Hold on, what's a crow's
foot?
These things here.
Crinkles!
Crinkles!
You cover up your laugh
lines.
That's a smooth canvas, my
friend.
Well, I appreciate it.
I thank my mother for good genes
and a lot of good vegan
lifestyle, and clean living
these days.
But what was the question again?
I was saying, how do you look
so good?
I don't know.
You never know.
I may get a knock on the door
one day and be like, hey, excuse
me, dad?
At this point, I'm getting so
old, it might be, excuse me,
grandpa, is that you?
They've got the eyes.
They will know.
Is that something you want?
Do you see in your life,
marriage and kids?
No, I hate children.
No, they're loud.
They smell, and they're just
little poop machines.
And they're forever.
And they're forever.
All they do is take your money
and your love.
Takers!
So selfish.
And they're just so cute.
Uhh.
No, we'll see.
I'm practicing.
Good.
I heard if you practice
enough, you just -- one day,
yeah, you graduate.
So you do everything all-out.
Practice, Jared.
That's it.
Practice.
Makes perfect.
That's right.
Great to see you.
Can't wait to see you at the
VMAs.
Thank you.
Appreciate it.
"Walk on water" from 30
seconds to Mars is available now
on download and streaming and
