Welcome back to the Gentleman's Gazette!

Today's video is all about dry cleaning!

I discuss when to utilize it, when not to go to the dry cleaner, and what to look for

in a quality dry cleaner so you protect your wardrobe investment.

So first of all, what is dry cleaning?

Basically, it is the process of cleaning without using water and detergent.

Despite of its name, dry cleaning is actually not dry, it just substitutes the detergent

and water with solvents.

Basically, garments are put in a solvent then spun, or steamed to get rid of it, and that's

the end of the dry cleaning process.

Dry cleaning has been around for almost 2 centuries.

In fact, it has been patented in 1921 as dry scouring by the African-American gentleman,

Thomas Jennnings.

Until about 1920, dry cleaning heavily relied on chlorine based and petroleum based solvents

which worked quite well but they were highly flammable.

So if you smoked a cigarette, you might actually light yourself on fire.

Because of that fire hazard, by the 1930s, most dry cleaners moved to different solvents.

The two most popular ones were tetrachloro-ethylene and perchloro-ethylene, and they are still

used today.

The biggest advantage was that both were compatible with most fabrics and they were not flammable.

If you actually take a look at the process of a dry-cleaning operation, it looks remarkably

similar to a regular washer and a dryer, just supersized.

Whenever you see a dry cleaner in your neighborhood, chances are they are one of two things.

A. they are a dry store or two, they are an actual dry cleaner.

A dry store is simply a place where you drop off your shirts or suits and they take them

and put them into a larger facility where everything is washed and dry cleaned.

On the other hand, a package plant dry cleaner is someone who actually cleans on the premises

which means you have a higher level of control because everything happens right there.

The dry clean stores are oftentimes just middle men so you actually don't know what's happening

to your garments.

Most of the time, a dry store is lss expensive, however, if you have a high-end shirt that

cost you hundreds of dollars, you don't want to save on the dry cleaning because it may

ruin your shirt because they iron it wrong, they tumble it in a way that the colors frays

easily and seams come undone.

Whenever possible, try to find a dry cleaning package plant that cleans in the premises

so you can see the whole process from start to finish if you want.

So, why do you need dry cleaning?

If you watched ,y video about wardrobe maintenance which you can check out here.

You'll see that I'm a big fan of clothes brushes and while they really work, sometimes, when

you have a stain like ketchup or grease, a simple brush won't do it and even water with

a little bit of dish soap, won't actually get rid of the stain and that's when you have

to go to the dry cleaner.

Sometimes you also have very delicate fabrics such as silk, velvet, or cashmere, and hot

water with detergent would destroy your garment and that's when you need dry cleaning as well.

Dry cleaning can actually be very controversial because of the chemicals used in the process

and tetrachloro-ethylene for example, is a water and soil contaminant whic is actually

quite bad and so there are regulations that are quite strict and people can't just pour

it in their backyard anymore, but that used to be the case and it's actually really bad

for the groundwater.

I think today, most dry cleaners have to abide by laws and it's safe to drop off your clothes

without having concerns about the environment.

So what clothes should you bring to a dry cleaner and what should you NOT dry clean?

First of all, if the label says dry clean only, that's a safe way to assume that it

should go to the dry cleaner.

Yes, you can try it at home to clean it yourself.

Maybe start on a seam that is not visible and rub some water and detergent on it to

see if it colors fast.

Chances are it's not and you're better off just handing it over.

Unfortunately, manufacturers are only required to provide one way to clean the garment.

Sometimes, they just put dry clean on it even though you could wash it by hand.

In those cases, try it, of course, at your own risk but chances are you can wash it in

the machine especially if you have a newer machine that has a gentle cycle such as a

cashmere cycle or a soft washing cycle.

Probably one item people bring to the dry cleaners are dress shirts and so that's what

they focus on.

Those are sometimes actually laundered with water and not just solvents and then the important

part is the pressing because the pressing is mostly done by machine, sometimes it's

a flat machine, sometimes it's a machine that looks like a person that blows out hot air.

In either case, Iwould always inquire about how exactly they iron your shirts and if they

offer a hand ironing service.

If they say hand-ironing, ask if that means someone operates the machine by hand orsomeone

actually uses an iron by hand.

You always want a service that irons by hand.

It may cost you a buck or two more but if your dress shirt costs 200 dollars, it's well

worth it.

You get a better crease, you get a nicer attention to details, and in the long run, your shirt

will last longer.

Because of the solvents, I always pay attention to my buttons, if something is loose, chances

are, they will come off more easily and ideally, you wash them at home and hire someone to

iron it for you which is actually more expensive than a dry cleaner and less convenient but

if you have really high end bespoke shirts, I suggest you wash them inhouse and don't

rely on a dry cleaner unless it;s someone that offers a museum quality dry cleaning

service and they do everything by hand.

In that case, it will cost you a lot more, it will probably run you more between five

to ten dollars per shirt but depending on where you live, it can be less or more.

Another item that's really great for dry cleaners are suits, jackets, and vests.

Mosst suits are made out of wool or wool blends and you never want to put them in your washing

machine, they have to be dry cleaned.

Likely, if you brush them, if you steam them, if you air them out properly, you will rarely

have to bring it to the dry cleaner.

Also, if you have more suits and they can rest in between, you have to go to the dry

cleaner less often.

Personally, I would say most of my garemtns probably only go to the dry cleaners once

every two or three years simply because I have a larger wardrobe and I take care of

my wardrobe so that way, they last much longer.

Another item people love to bring to the dry cleaner is a tie.

Unfortunately, most ties are made out of silk and silk is not color fast.

You cannot wash it with dish soap and water because chances are the color will come out

and it will ruin your tie.

At the same time, if you bring it to a dry cleaner, chances are they'll press it and

the tie looks really bad afterwards.

So, the proper way to clean a tie is to actually undo the seam in the back then clean it and

then sew it back together.

You guessed it, that's quite expensive and it's something that would only be done back

in the 1920s when you had house staff.

Today, I'm not aware of a single dry cleaner that offers that kind of service but generally,

when you have to bring your tie to the dry cleaner chances are, it won't come out nice,

it will look weird and it won't tie as well so usually, it's ready for the garbage bin

so be careful with your ties because dry cleaning them usually ruins them.

Most dry cleaners use a stiffening product on the garments before they dry clean it or

while they dry clean it simply because it helps to press them, however, I personally

don't like it on very soft shoulder garments so always ask if your dry cleaner uses them

and if they can skip them for your garments.

As you can see, it really pays to develop a relationship with your dry cleaner because

if they know you on a first name basis and you tip them well, chances are, they are much

more accommodating to your requests.

So how often should you dry clean?

In essence, as little as possible and just only when absolutely needed because dry cleaning

deteriorates the fibers and the longevity of your garment.

So what can you do to avoid repeated trips to the dry cleaner?

Go with washable undergarments that protect the outer layers such as a shirt or your suit.

Personally, I'm not a big fan of wearing undershirts and you can learn more about it in our undershirt

guide here because I consider the shirt to be the barrier to protect my suit and I'd

rather invest in different shirts but it's a personal choice and you can make that call.

Whenever you've been out and you've worn your suit all day, don't wear it the next day,

let it rest for 2 days, hang it on a hanger, either steam it in a bathroom or with a garment

steamer and then let it just hang outside.

I usually put it in the garage or in a place where it's covered where they don't get wet

but get a lot of fresh air and the breeze, it just helps the garment to get rid of dust

and to release the wrinkles and to smell fresh.

Avoid spraying cologne directly onto your garments because they leave residues and you'll

have to bring it to the dry cleaner more often.

Also, skip all kinds of fabric fresheners.

They may work temporarily but they leave that residue and sometimes it feels and touched

differently so I suggest to skip those.

Also try to spot clean at home and the sooner you do that after a stain occured, or the

sooner you bring it to the dry cleaner, the better it is.

If you let the stain sit over time, chances are, it's more difficult to get rid of the

stain and sometimes they will stay forever.

In a nutshell, spot cleaning, brushing, steaming, and airing out your garments should always

be the first line of defense against dry cleaning.

So what should you look for in a great dry cleaner?

First of all, you want someone who offers hand ironing services because if they don't

offer that, it's too low of a quality and I would stay clear from that.

Second, if you can find someone who offers museum quality dry cleaning, that means they

have the capabilities to really use items that would go to the museum.

Usually they do it on wedding dresses and while that runs through 80-100-150 dollars

and it's not somethning you want to do with your suit on a regular basis, just them knowing

how to do it usually means they also have a higher standard for their regular dry cleaning

operations.

See if they actually look at your buttons, if they cover them up, if they ask you what

kind of stain was actually used on that, so they can treat it the right way and get rid

of it.

Try to develop this relationship where they're actually interested in your garment and in

you and that they honor your requests such as hand ironing service.

Make sure they have clear structured pricing so they tell you exactly what it cost beforehand

and a written policy about what happens in case something gets damaged or lost.

Of course, you can always check for reviews.

In my experience, most people don't care about clothes as much as you do probably and therefore

those reviews are not really that helpful.

So in today's outfit, I'm wearing a jacket with a matching vest.

vest is double breasted, 6 buttons, 3 of which are buttoned.

They go well together with mustard colored pants.

The pants were made in Sri Lanka by a custom tailor that I made during a trip there.

The suit is vintage from Caraceni in Milan.

I'm pairing it with a striped winchester shirt.

Winchester means that the collar is contrasting white and the shirt body is in a different

pattern.

I'm pairing them with gold knot monkey fist cuff links from Fort Belvedere which go really

well with the warm tone of my jacket, the vest, and the pants.

For my ring I went with a citrine with a yellow gold and it's a one color that goes well with

my outfit as well as with my gold wedding band and my gold cuff links.

The tie is a blue, red, and buff tone madder silk with a large paisley and the blue is

picked up by the stitching of the pocket square which also picks up the white stripe in the

shirt, that way, it's all tied together.

The shoes I"m wearing are actually quite old.

I bought them in 2003, used, from a vintage store because that's all I could afford at

the time but I wanted quality shoes.

Socks are from Fort Belvedere with shadow stripes.

The two tone colors burgundy and mustard yellow really helps to tie the brown shoes together

with the mustard yellow pants and even though the yellow of the socks is not exactly the

same as the pants, the two tone of the burgundy helps to really get it straight.

That's why I love the two tone socks because they pair so well with everything and they

are much better than solid socks.

To learn more about socks, please check out our video and our guide on how to pair shoes

with socks and pants here.

Today, I'm not wearing a boutonniere but you could also wear it for example with an edelwiess

or a blue cornflower or a blue delphinium looks really nice because it's a large lapel

and it just helps to make it more interesting and less boring.

The pocket square is handrolled but not ina traditional way and it has very fine X stitch

which is very difficult to accomplish and we found someone in Italy who can do that.

It's very time consuming but it's a very debonair, elegant and unique look.

If you want the cufflinks, the tie, or th epocket square, or the socks, you can check

them out in our shop here.

THE BEST AIRSOFT GUN FOR A BEGINNER? - Duration: 12:06.

Hey guys! For this week i brought you a gun that I think needs more attention

It's not the type of the replica itself that I'd like to highlight but the manufacturer

It's got a place in the airsoft market that makes affordable airsoft guns

And for its price you get a really good quality gun

And it's the Specna Arms

At first I was a bit avarse from it, but i Have to tell you, it convinced me

I often get questions from you like which airsoft gun do I recommend for beginners?

Well, this is one of those!

Specna is present on the airsoft market from 2014

It got known mainly in Europe

Because it is also a very good base gun for more professioinal players as well

And it's a good start for the beginners, too

And you don't have to pay for customs

because it's got many distributors in Europe

Specna mainly makes M4 style guns

They're arranged in 3 main groups:

V: as Vltor style guns

The differences between the groups are mainly in the externals

The internals are kind of the same

The "basic" is for the basic M4 styled guns

"Advanced" got a bit more special look

But there's no big differences

I brought you a basic one, an M4A1

For the first look I didn1t really like the box itself

as it's just a plain cardboard

with a Specna logo on it, I didn't really like it

But then I understood the philosophy of the brand

They don't spend on useless marketing stuffs

so that you get your gun in a super cool box

because I know the first impression you get is of the box,

but this money is not invested in the box, but in the GUN!

On the sticker we can find the "Enter and Convert" slogan

That means that our gun has got a quick spring change feature

And of course the Specna logo

Let's see what's inside the box

The instruction manual

Safety regulations about not to shoot your neighbour's or his cat's eye

A record of firing

About the fps of the gun

425.6, 420, 422

So a bit higher than the fps limit that is regulated by MASZ (Hungarian Airsoft Rules)

But that's not a problem, because we got a spare spring that is...

that is not written on the case

But as far as I know, inside we have an m120, and this is an m90

We also have a battery, charger, BB

AAAnd a

Keyholder...

Really?

I just said that they don'tspend on useles marketing stuff...

No...It's not useless, I got it!!

It's a sling!!

Also we have the Hi-cap magazine, below that

The MKH card (for hungarian law regulationsÖ

And the gun itslef

in dual tone

Let's see the externals

First at the front

A14 mm CCW flashhider

A one-part outer barrel that is of metal

It's a bit matte

I like that

A plastic handguard

That's ABS

I don't know how you can see it, it's got a bit other color than the stock

The stock and the grip is like the same

But the handguard is a bit other...it's because it's made of another type of plastic

Let's see the metal body

Painting of it is good

There's not that much difference, but maybe the upper is a bit matte

And then a really good looking MARINE marking on the magwell

And the other side: Specna Arms Ind.

These are really good quality, not blurred or something like that

There's the one handed fire-switch

that's got a sweet click, I like that a lot

not wobbling

And then

I'm showing you guys

A functioning bolt catch!

finally! so it's not wobbling there

but it's got function! that is when you pull the charging handle and open the dust cover

and you want to set the hopup

you can release the bolt by pushing it

So I like that a lot

If you want to remove the bolt catch function

You can easily do it, you don't have to open the gearbox

that's another plus point

We have a handle with a built in rear sight

That you can remove by these two screws

and you can put another optic on the rail

the stock can be set in 5 positions that is also marked

a bit wobbling...

but you can easily fix it

I'm showing you what I usually with it

just take off your stock

and at the end of the buffer tube

you have to glue on the soft part of a piece of velcro

and it won't wobble

so you don't have to replase the stock or buffer tube

at the front there's a normal sling attachment, and a QD at the rear

I've already mentioned the Enter&Convert system

The SAEC system is a bit newer

With which you don't even need a screwdriver to replace the spring

I got many times in situations when I wanted to go to

to a field where the fps limit was lower than the fps of my gun

And just for this reason I din't want to open my super cool gearbox

So it's a huge plus point for Specna

The newer, SAEC is a really unique, innovative system

You just unscrew this part

turn the buffer tube

unscrew the spring guide

put in the spring...I mean take out the old one and put in the new spring

well this Enter & Convert is also better than nothing

but I wouldn't say it's fast

but it's absulutely not hard

you don't have to open up the gearbox

But you have to get to the gearbox by taking the body off of it

even the motor, grip

So you can't do this just before the game

It's recommended to do it the night before

but in my opinion this thing is already a great advantage

As I said it's not hard to take out the gearbox from the body

just some screws, pins and done

but I do recommend to watch some "how to" videos before that

you can easily find a bunch of them about how to take out the gearbox

About the internals in short

So it comes with an m120 spring form the factory and I have to say

it is capable for this

I do recommend to change the motor for a high torque one if you use this spring

fully metal teeth on the piston

shimming is quite good

so we can say it'snormal, with no issues

of course, you can tuning it

that's why I said Specna is a good base for this

So these guns are value for money

it's massive, looks great

you can easily customize

as it's compatible with other brands externals

it's good in the inside

but a high-torque motor is recommended

The fast spring change system is just a huge plus!

especially the SAEC

and that we have a functioning bolt cach!

it's also a big for to this gun!

So in conclusion it's a really good, reliable brand

I do recommend this gun for beginners or fora base for tuning

And if you'd like to buy this gun, i'm providng you with the link in the descriptioin

So that was this weeks gun review

I hope you liked it

I also look forward your suggestions/recommendation for these videos

and if you enjoyed, don't forget to hit that Like and Subscribe button

and if you have already done that, then I'll see you in the next video! bye!

Is FEMA Prepared for Hurricane Harvey? - Duration: 3:34.

Is FEMA Prepared for Hurricane Harvey?

Hurricane Harvey will pose the first major test for FEMA during Donald Trumps presidency.

In August 2005 Hurricane Katrina struck Florida, Cuba, Mississippi, Louisiana, and infamously, the below-sea-level city of New Orleans. It claimed over a thousand lives and caused over a billion dollars in property damage, making it the deadliest hurricane since 1928.

The federal disaster relief effort to Katrina was harshly criticized, as The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) struggled to contain damage, utilize available resources, and evacuate refugees – with FEMA Director Michael Brown being unaware of refugees stranded at the Louisana Superdome three days after the storm, despite multiple news outlets covering their plight.

There were severe coordination issues as well, as FEMA caused a bottleneck by preventing local first responders from acting without state permission, and was allegedly slow in responding to Amtrak when they offered to evacuate refugees by the hundreds via their passenger trains.

In the aftermath, FEMA's director was recalled, and stories came out regarding countless breakdowns of the relief effort.

The House of Representatives report on the situation was damning: "The failure of local, state, and federal governments to respond more effectively to Katrina — which had been predicted in theory for many years, and forecast with startling accuracy for five days — demonstrates that whatever improvements have been made to our capacity to respond to natural or man-made disasters, four and half years after 9/11, we are still not fully prepared.

Local first responders were largely overwhelmed and unable to perform their duties, and the National Response Plan did not adequately provide a way for federal assets to quickly supplement or, if necessary, supplant first responders.".

Now, nearly 12 years to the date of Hurricane Katrina's first landfall, another Category 3 Hurricane, Harvey, sets its sights on the Gulf Coast. This time targeting communities from Houston all the way down to Port Mansfield.

With over 100 mile per hour windsand the potential to drop nearly ten feet of water on coastal communities that have seen the sea level rise year-over-year for the last century.

So the question becomes, is FEMA ready? Since 2005 FEMA's changed significantly. Its budget has increased dramatically, with monies being allocated for flood risk analysis, and mapping software, among other initiatives.

Most of these initiatives appear to be a direct response to Katrina; allowing local officials to behave more independently and the creation of 'strike teams' that can get to any disaster affected area in the country within two hours.

The positives don't stop there. Current FEMA Director Brock Long served as the Director of Alabama's Emergency Management Agency, and as one of FEMA's Regional Hurricane Managers before being appointed as Director.

"We've gone 11 years without a major hurricane land-falling in the U.S…I worry that a lot of people have forgotten what that's like." He said to Bloomberg.

However, Long (and President Donald Trump) have stated they want to cut some FEMA funding; suggesting federal flood insurance should be restricted in communities most prone to flooding, as a way to force local governments to have stricter building codes on coastal establishments.

That said, so far, FEMA seems to be doing all the right things in anticipation of Hurricane Harvey – using mainstream Media like CNN and Fox News to warn of the storm's danger, and social media like Twitter to reach hundreds of thousands of citizens with vital information – an avenue of direct communication unavailable to them in 2005.

A graphic that reads as follows: hurricane evacuation tips. When and where to go: leave immediately when told to evacuate by local officials.

Check with your local emergency management office for info on evacuation routes. What to do: Check with neighbors who may need ride. Take your pets with you. Bring essential supplies like water, food, medications.

Could Harvey be as bad as Katrina? Its unlikely. Hurricane Harvey has weaker winds and can't sustain its full power as long as Katrina did, and the population density is lower in some communities, as well.

Will FEMA handle Harvey as poorly as Katrina? Probably not.

In the wake of Katrina, significant changes have been made to ensure more efficiency on the part of the agency, typified by their ability to work effectively with several state, local, and federal organizations in the wake of Superstorm Standy.

Regardless, FEMA faces its first major challenge in some time, and the first under the Trump Administration. All eyes are on the response, relief, and recovery of this forthcoming natural disaster.

Reusuable Low-Temp Melt Plastic for Polymer Clay & Resin Molds & Molding-Friday Findings - Duration: 7:08.

Have you enjoyed making molds of textures and objects with silicone molding putty, but

found that it gets a bit pricey?

If so, I have an alternate molding product for you, one that is reusable over and over

again.

Hi there, Sandy here.

Welcome to another Friday Findings video at KeepsakeCrafts.net.

So this is one of many different brands of a reusable molding plastic.

This one is called InstaMorph.

I found it on Amazon.

There were other ones, Oyumaru or something like that and the cool thing about it is that

it melts at a fairly low temperature, 140 degrees.

You just put it in hot water and it melts and then you, it's moldable.

Now when mine came, it was in little plastic pellets in this bag kind of shown here.

Sometimes you'll buy it and it will be in plastic sticks, but it's a very rigid material.

It's not like your siliconee putty, which is flexible.

And the main benefit of this stuff is that it can be used time and again.

So if you're going to make a large mold, like I have this big piece of wood bark that I

used for a project.

You could actually see the picture here of me in the process of making the mold of the

bark and then using it to make some polymer clay pieces, which I'll show you in a minute.

That used a fairly large quantity of the molding plastic and that would be a pretty expensive

amount of molding putty, which you wouldn't be able to use for anything else.

So that's one thing that I love about this stuff, is that you can reuse it again and

again.

It's great for using large one time molds.

So let me show you what it looks like when it's melted.

This is a pot that I just took off the stove and pardon that mine looks quite grungy and

dirty.

Like I said, I used it to mold tree bark and so it just got bits entrapped in there, but

I haven't noticed that it effects the mold quality.

You know, this has started to cool off a little, but you can see that when it's melted it goes

translucent.

You also want to be careful that you don't let the water get too hot or you can burn

yourself.

So let's see, that's just about right.

They said don't let it go over 150, 140 is enough.

So that's just about perfect.

And right now some of it is stuck to my pot, but once it cools off it peels right up.

It doesn't stay.

So let me get this out and I'll show you how to play with it.

One thing that's different about this putty from your siliconee putty is that it does

tend to stick more.

siliconee just has a more natural non-stick.

For example, I thought I would make a little texture of my little basket here, but it all

really stuck in the crevices.

I don't know if I'm going to be able to rescue this.

I may just throw the whole basket in water and see if I can work this out.

I kind of like this little basket.

So do think ahead.

Maybe test out what you're going to do with this.

It's a little bit different like I said.

Now here's something here.

It's a picture frame with a very old, it was about 20 years ago, a few pounds ago, picture

of hubby and me.

I thought it was a cute frame to maybe recreate.

And because this is firm and rigid and it's not going to be ruined by the plastic sticking

to it, I can just make a mold of it, the whole thing and then you could pour resin into the

mold if you make sure to make your sides squared..

There's plastic between the photo and the melted plastic by the way.

So I'm trying to kind of build up walls here.

If I made it out of polymer clay I could just trim it afterwards and not worry about it

too much.

And I'm not going to leave this to cool on here.

It holds detail well enough if you're careful.

I'm going to kind of flatten that out and then remove my frame and I'll flatten it back

out again and let it cool off and you'll know if it's cooling off because it will start

turning opaque again from translucent.

So the pros for this stuff, it can be reused.

If I decide I don't like this picture frame, this is fully half of my molding plastic,

I can just remelt it instead of having it wasted.

It's good for making large one time molds, good when you need a rigid mold, like if you're

going to pour something in, like resin.

Although if you use enough of the silicone you can.

And by the way, it does take pretty good detail.

This is the project that I made with that tree bark that I showed earlier and these

are just polymer clay pieces.

Here's a picture of me using that big mold and just taking pieces of brown marbled clay

and shaping my little fairy garden bridge pieces.

Now the cons of this is that it's not flexible, although that can be a pro.

It just depends on what kind of project you have.

It's quite rigid.

Another con I think is that you have to bother to get out a pot and water and wait for it

to heat up and wait for it to cool off.

It does cool kind of quickly, so you do have to have all your things ready and be ready

to work fast.

Another cool thing about this is you can use this stuff to make objects.

It doesn't just have to be a mold material.

It can be the actual object material.

On the back of the bag they give you an idea.

They made a hanger, maybe something specific.

They made a handle for a tool.

Have you ever had one of those little tiny plastic part that was broken and it was such

a simple thing, but you needed that exact thing.

Well you could use your silicone molding putty.

Make a mold of the object put back together and then press this stuff into the mold, let

it cool and as this shows, you can drill it, sand it, cut it and have yourself an object.

The only thing is it can't be subject to over 140 degrees Fahrenheit so maybe you couldn't

make a replacement part for your dishwasher because it would get too hot and then go all

floppy.

But those are just some ideas to get you started on a different product for making molds that

I think you might find useful in certain situations.

So I hope you found this video helpful.

lower left or the description box that will go to my blog post where I always have a complete
