Hi there, Vladimir here with another video on how to learn English
Did you know that there's just 1 simple trick to becoming a fluent English speaker?
Did you know that there is 1 thing you must change about your approach to English
in order to master the English language.
1 simple change in mindset.
Here it is.
English is not a hobby
English is not a hobby
Most people take up English with a mindset of being a hobby
It all starts in school, we learn maths chemistry, biology, history, English
English is just one of the subjects.
No, English is not just a subject anymore
English is much more than that.
We are human beings, you and I,
and as such we are a part of the animal kingdom
We are animals
what separates us from all other animals, what is the one single biggest difference
between us and the other animals
That's right, language
Language, what an amazing skill we have the ability to communicate
Any language, Chinese, French, Bulgarian English, Japanese
Without language we are nothing but animals, just eat and sleep, defecate and fornicate.
It is because of language that we can build high-speed trains, airplanes, space shuttles.
It is pretty obvious right?
what does all this have to do with English?
What all this has to do with English is that English is the only true global language.
Mind you, this wasn't the case 20 years ago
This happened fairly recently, this happened in the last 10 -15 years
since the advent of this thing called
the Internet and companies like Apple, Google, Facebook, Netflix, and the like
the computer and the Internet made English ubiquitous
If you haven't realized this simple fact it means you have the mindset of a hobbyist
and with that kind of mindset you will never master English
We are human beings, we are social animals, we talk, and
English is unquestionably the only true global language.
English is like no other skill.
Your English should be as good as your native language
almost as good, virtually the same
But communication is not the only reason.
There is one more reason why you should take English much more seriously
English gives you arguably the best quality information
why?
Because English is the language of science.
No question about that either I hope.
even if you don't need or want to communicate with people from other countries
you still need English to get good quality information
Let me show you what I mean.
Wikipedia, the 4th most visited website in the world
Google, Youtube, Facebook and Wikipedia
What is Wikipedia?
An online Encyclopedia
Wikipedia is information
This is a list of the different language editions of Wikipedia.
Unquestionably English is at the top with a little shy of 5.5 million articles
Let us look at Japanese, which is one of the top 5 languages on the Internet
a little over 1 million articles.
Over 5 times difference in quantity, that's a lot
but that's only half the picture
The other half is in the Depth column
The "Depth" column is a rough indicator of a Wikipedia's quality
showing how frequently its articles are updated
to update means to add the most recent information,
basically means better quality.
On average, each English article is updated about 1000 times,
how many times do you recon for each Japanese article
Less than 80 times.
That's more than a 10-time difference in quality.
10 times, for Japanese, one of the most common languages on the internet.
My native Bulgarian a mere 25 times,
25 vs 1000
Hope that answers the question why I learned English.
Imagine you are eating a steak, and it is a good steak, but then I tell you, try this one
this one is 10 times better, more delicious, more nutritious than this one, 10 times.
And keep in mind that this is an okay steak.
Japan is a big country with a very large population.
There is a lot of translation going on in Japan.
Japanese people can still get access to relatively good quality information in Japanese,
but it is no match for this bad boy here.
10 times better.
Information about your health, about your food about your hobby and of course about business
Just google "lower back pain" in English and in your native language and see the difference
in the way information is displayed and organized on the screen
Huge difference
It is not just about communication, it is also about good quality information.
English is not a hobby, not anymore, not for the last 10 years
Don't get me wrong, I am not saying that the Americans and the Brits are smarter and more
intelligent than the rest of us,
no, not at all,
all I'm saying is that French, German, Japanese, Chinese researchers and scientists need to
publish in English because English is the language of science.
I don't care about English,
All I care about is communicating with as many people as I possibly can and
learning good quality information.
If Chinese could give me that I would have learned Chinese or French or Spanish
I don't care.
English turned out the lingua franca of our time, not Bulgarian, so I learned English.
That's why I am critical of overly simplistic methods about fluent in 3 months,
language hacks, 4-12 sentences, mistakes are OK, and all that jazz.
Those methods are for hobbyists.
English is not a hobby
This is the 1 simple thing you must change about your approach to English.
English is not a hobby.
The second thing you need to realize is that native speakers are not the best teachers.
And the third thing you need to do is to stop watching useless youtube videos of
native speakers telling you how to learn English but instead read books and
I suggest you start with my book Virtually Native
A book giving you a working method for learning English
Here is the non-native proof standing right in front of you
Virtually native is available on Amazon and virtuallynative.com
