Nana/Chloe: Yes we know but we just chat for the scene, cinema, you know

Mikö/Max: They are having a chat on the beach

Nana/Chloe: (it's a french joke not funny at all lol) It's a giraffe in a zoo and there is a helicopter just landing beside her cage

Gaelle: What sound does a cow make when it's laughing?

Gaelle: Moo-Haha

What is Linux? - Duration: 4:20.

Hi everyone, and welcome to the Paragonica video series "Mastering Linux".

This video series will provide you with knowledge and practical exercises toward mastering Linux.

In this video we'll answer the question "What is Linux?".

OK, so what is Linux? Linux is software. Linux is an operating system.

If you have a laptop, it probably uses the Windows or Mac OS X operating system.

And these operating systems manage computer hardware and provide services for computer programs.

You could use Linux on your laptop because Linux offers a desktop like Windows and Mac OS X.

But more often, Linux is used to manage servers, which are special computers we'll define shortly.

So without an operating system your computer wouldn't be able to do much at all.

The operating system manages the visual user interface, the keyboard, the mouse,

saving files to the hard drive, and many of the other things computers do.

And you can setup your operating system to add users, create, edit and delete files,

install software programs, and many other things you will master in this video series.

Like Windows and OS X, the Linux operating system and the Linux desktop can be used

to manage laptops, desktops, etc. but much of the time its used to manage servers.

So what's a server? A server is a computer program that accepts requests from other computers

over the internet or some other network, and usually returns some data.

People all over the world use Google to search the internet.

Each time someone performs a search, they make a request to a Google server.

And because so many people are performing searches, Google has lots of servers.

Google has massive buildings with tens of thousands of server computers.

People like you and me might use a Linux server to host a website we've created,

so people around the world can visit our website.

To ensure Linux servers and Linux desktops function properly, you need to know Linux.

And that's what this video series from Paragonica is for,

to provide you with knowledge and practical exercises toward mastering Linux.

This series on Linux will cover many areas of Linux in detail, and will include

exercises to strengthen your knowledge and build practical expertise in Linux.

Some of the topics this series will cover include the Linux desktop,

using the Linux shell, navigating the Linux file system, manipulating text files,

managing processes, and writing shell scripts.

We'll cover other topics related to Linux system administration

and Linux server administration as well, including managing users,

file systems, networking, services, security, troubleshooting, and much more.

So to summarize, Linux is software to manage computers,

like Windows or Mac OS X for laptops and desktops,

or servers that respond to requests from other computers.

Mastering Linux is good, because Linux is widely used

and offers a lot of great functionality.

We hope you've enjoyed this video.
