The more the better.
Hello everyone,
Today I would like to show you the basics of watercolor.
The other day, the weather was nice, so I went outside to do sketching.
People as old as me were sketching in there.
I was watching their sketches from behind them.
I noticed something and I was very surprised about it.
I was surprised to see the container for water that they were using.
I'd like to show you the water containers they were using.
It is such a container.
Probably, this is the lid of something.
That person was put a water in such a lid and drawing a picture.
Then, I saw the next person. It was a completely different container.
It was a container of plastic bottles.
He was washing the brush in this.
I was surprised.
This is no good.
Oh, you guys!
Are not you putting water in such a container?
Yes?
This is absolutely not good.
Today's theme is "water".
I would like to talk about this important water.
Because the watercolor painting, so do not think it's natural to have water.
This is very important.
First, how much water should we prepare?
The more water, the better.
By the way,
I went to Bali to sketch a few years ago.
The sunset was very beautiful. The cape became a dark silhouette and was very beautiful.
I looked at it, and suddenly I wanted to draw a picture.
At that time, I noticed that I did not have water.
I thought about it.
I decided to draw a picture using the sea water.
This was nice.
Therefore, the more water, is the better.
How to prepare water when going to sketch?
I said I should prepare a lot of water. But I can't carry a bathtub.
So I'll show you how to do it.
It's a paper cup.
You will need at least a cup of water to sketch.
Moreover, the shape of this cup is also good.
Because, the opening is wide.
The opening width of the pet bottle is small.
The lid of the container is wide, but here is shallow. So, there will be little water.
The cup has wide openings and plenty of water.
We can also throw it away after using it.
Let's prepare water for this paper cup.
However, if you put 100% water in it, it will overflow.
80% will be good.
Okay, I'd like to talk about the second one.
You know that we need water to paint a watercolor.
However, do you know what role this water?
What does this water do for paintings?
Don't you think so?
"It's for washing dirty brushes." or
"It's for melt the paints."
You might think like this.
What I want to talk about as a second point is more than that.
It means that this water has a very important role,
more than washing the brush or melt the paints.
What's role?
If you know this answer, you are so smart.
It's...
Look.
White of Gouache
This is "white" of gouache.
This is a painting material other than watercolors,
add this white to brighten the color of the paint.
The water will do that work for watercolors.
In watercolor, the water is the same as the white of gouache.
Did you think this water was "white"?
If you know about this, it is okay to leave today's lesson.
If you don't know about this, please listen what I'll talk.
This water is not just for washing brushes and melting paint.
We'll use it to brighten the paints, and to make it whiter.
This water is "White".
I said that I would prepare a cup of water.
Now, we understood the role of water.
First, we need water that does not matter if it gets dirty.
Then, we need water as white color, which should not be dirty.
So we'll need two cups.
Okay, I'll put a cups.
I'll try to paint it.
I already prepared the water, but I'll use the cups.
There are two cups.
I'll put about 80%.
80%
I put these on the sketchbook so that you can see it.
Okay, I'll melt a paint.
Start with both clean water.
Put water on the brush and melt the paint.
Ummm, Blue…
Okay, today's color is Crimson.
The cup on the left is the water to melt the paint.
We need plenty of paints.
So we need plenty of water.
Ummm… I want to go to Bali again.
I'll paint it.
Like this.
Like this.
Then, I want to make this color brighter.
We'll add white here if it's a gouache.
But in watercolor, this water will do its role of "white".
Because this water should not get dirty, gently put the brush in water.
Place the water on the pallet,
discard the extra moisture of the brush and bring the water of the cup again.
We need to think about how much white it should add here.
Add a lot of it, or a little bit. It will you decide.
Think of this water as white paint.
Can you see it?
Is this one easier to see?
I'll add a little more white.
This color is more whitish than this, isn't it?
This is because the amount of white is different.
And wash this dirty brush with water which it can be dirty.
We need water to paint the watercolor.
How much water is needed?
It needs plenty.
But if you can't prepare it, let's prepare 2 cups of water.
Then this water has a role.
The first one is the role of water to wash and clean the brush.
This can be dirty water.
The second is the water as white paint that lightens the color of the paint.
This should not be dirty water.
Did you ever think of water as white paint?
If you didn't know this, I'm glad to talk to you about this.
