We end 2018 with a win, a deserved win

though by no means easy because it never is at grounds like this.

Empoli deserve credit for fighting and staying in the game until the end

but Inter were good value for the win.

Empoli know what they need to do, how they need to play.

They make it hard for you

because they batten down the hatches

then break forward at great pace

if you don't stifle them when you lose the ball.

We didn't always close them down as a unit when we lost possession.

When they're building play in their 3-5-2 they tend to spread out

so we had to cover more ground to close them down.

We did it though, making the odd mistake,

but we set ourselves up for a different second half

because they used a lot of energy in the first half

and with our changes after the break we were able to exploit

the weaknesses that arose from defending in the first period.

You're able to switch formation instantly now,

from 4-3-3 to 4-2-4 or 4-4-2 then 3-5-2.

The players are able to adapt

and do a great job in a position different to the one they were in a minute before.

Is this the work you do on the training ground during the week

paying off in match situations such as today's?

A lot of it comes down to the attributes of the individual players

because with Keita, Politano, Lautaro and Icardi

you can call it a 4-2-4 but it's still the same approach.

We try to play with one forward behind the other

with two wide players who get forward or drop back when the full-backs go on the overlap.

At the end, when D'Ambrosio came on, we did mix things up a bit

and I think we did it well because we needed to consolidate at that point.

We broke forward two or three times but weren't able to put the game to bed.

It's been a busy period for Inter, ending with Napoli and now Empoli.

Has the break come at the right time?

Well, yes, because when you go away after a win all is well

but if you've lost you can't wait to play again.
