- A reading from the first book of Samuel.
In those days, Hannah conceived
and at the end of her term bore a son
whom she called Samuel,
since she had asked the Lord for him.
The next time her husband Elkanah
was going up with the rest of his household
to offer the customary sacrifice to the Lord
to fulfill his vows, Hannah did not go,
explaining to her husband, "Once the child is weaned,
"I will take him to appear before the Lord
"and to remain there forever.
"I will offer him as a perpetual nazirite."
Once Samuel was weaned, Hannah brought him up with her,
along with a three-year-old bull, an ephah of flour,
and a skin of wine, and presented him
at the temple of the Lord in Shiloh.
After the boy's father had sacrificed the young bull,
Hannah, his mother, approached Eli and said:
"Pardon, my lord!
"As you live, my lord, I am the woman
"who stood near you here, praying to the Lord.
"I prayed for this child, and the Lord granted my request.
"Now I, in turn, give him to the Lord.
"As long as he lives, he shall be dedicated to the Lord."
Hannah left Samuel there.

Beloved: See what love the Father has bestowed on us
that we may be called the children of God.
And so we are.
The reason the world does not know us
is that it did not know him.
Beloved, we are God's children now.
What we shall be has not yet been revealed.
We do know that when it is revealed we shall be like him,
for we shall see him as he is.
Beloved, if our hearts do not condemn us,
we have confidence in God
and receive from him whatever we ask,
because we keep his commandments and do what pleases him.
And his commandment is this:
we should believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ,
and love one another as he commanded us.
Those who keep his commandments remain in him,
and he in them, and the way we know
that he remains in us is from the Spirit he gave us.

- [Congregation] Glory to you, oh Lord.
- Each year Jesus' parents went to Jerusalem
for the feast of Passover, and when he was 12 years old,
they went up according to festival custom.
After they had completed its days, as they were returning,
the boy Jesus remained behind in Jerusalem,
but his parents did not know it.
Thinking that he was in the caravan,
they journeyed for a day and looked for him
among their relatives and acquaintances,
but not finding him, they returned to Jerusalem
to look for him.
After three days they found him in the temple,
sitting in the midst of the teachers,
listening to them and asking them questions,
and all who heard him were astounded at his understanding
and his answers.
When his parents saw him, they were astonished,
and his mother said to him,
"Son, why have you done this to us?
"Your father and I have been looking for you
"with great anxiety."
And he said to them, "Why were you looking for me?
"Did you not know that I must be in my Father's house?"
But they did not understand what he said to them.
He went down with them and came to Nazareth,
and was obedient to them,
and his mother kept all these things in her heart.
And Jesus advanced in wisdom and age and favor
before God and man.
The gospel of the Lord.
- [Congregation] Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
- Well, on the solemnity of the holy family,
the holy family is given to us
as kind of an, I would say, maybe an unreasonable model.
I mean, the holy family, let's face it.
It's two saints and the Son of God.
But when we look at the holy family,
we see that the holy family is formed
on the divine family in heaven:
a Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, the divine family,
is what we formed the holy family with.
We see them in the divine family:
the Father gives life and being to his Son
through the love of the Holy Spirit.
It's about relationships.
Being a holy family is about relationships.
So as we look at the divine family
of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit,
and the relationships that exist within that Trinity,
the Father gives himself completely to the Son.
The Son responds completely by trusting in the Father.
And the two are devoted to each other
in the unifying love of the Holy Spirit.
So the holy family really reflects these relationships
of the Trinity, of God,
as three persons who are devoted to each other in love.
And so we then strive to be a holy family
by being persons who are devoted to each other in love.
It's about our relationships, too,
so we can be a holy family in our families of ancestry.
We strive to be a holy family in our friendships
by being persons who are devoted to each other in love.
We strive to be a holy family in our church
by being persons who are devoted to each other in love.
We strive to be a holy family in our world
by being persons who are devoted to each other in love.
So you see, God wants to make his family life
come alive in ours.
He wants his family life to come alive in our families
as he made it come alive in the holy family.
And we know it doesn't mean
that there was perfection in the holy family,
even though it was two saints and the Son of God.
Because in the gospel we hear today
we see Jesus missing in action.
Joseph thought he was with Mary,
Mary thought he was with Joseph, he was missing in action,
probably today they would have got arrested, right?
Now when we look at them, though,
they trusted, though, in each other.
And even though they had that holy family in that they,
I mean, that they had the life
of the divine family within them, it didn't stop.
When Mary saw Jesus, she was ticked, huh?
"Son, why have you done this to us?"
And then Jesus:
"Did you not know that I must be in my Father's house?"
It's like, no.
They had limitations,
but even in the limitations of the holy family,
they still strived to be people
who let the divine family live through them.
It's a beautiful example for us:
the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit,
living through Jesus, Mary, and Joseph.
And that same holy family of heaven,
that same holy family that lived on Earth,
and then our families in so many ways,
how we then let the God of love live through us.
Then we make the holy family alive here and now.
Amen.
Together we profess our faith using the Apostles' Creed.
- [All] I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth,
and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died and was buried.
He descended into hell.
On the third day he rose again from the dead.
He ascended into heaven,
and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty.
From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting.
