Waching daily Jan 1 2019

[MUSIC PLAYING]

Here in India, people are on tenterhooks

as the country gears up for next year's general elections

when Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be seeking

a second five-year term.

Predicting the outcome of Indian elections

is notoriously difficult, given the country's diversity.

But Indians are united in the hope

that they will retain their place as the world's fastest

growing large economy and create more of the millions of jobs

so desperately needed.

What is likely to happen in Italy in 2019?

Well, at the moment, all eyes are on the spat between

the Italian government and Brussels over Rome;s spending

plans, which have also alarmed financial markets.

I think these concerns are likely to fade

somewhat going into the start of 2019

and then potentially reemerge in the build up

to the campaign for the European elections.

These elections are being targeted

by Matthias Albany, the Interior Minister and leader

of the league party, as a way of boosting his political momentum

on a national level

Mexico kicks off 2019 with a brand new president--

Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador.

He's promised sweeping change.

The big hope is that he actually delivers, especially

on reducing corruption and impunity.

Turkey is home to a million school-age Syrian refugee

children.

And the country hopes to get a long way next year

towards its aim of getting all of them

into the mainstream Turkish education system.

Here in Moscow, the big hope for 2019

would be some kind of easing of tensions between Russia

and the West that have led to four

and a half years worth of sanctions against Moscow.

In a perfect world, that would involve the conclusion

of investigations in Washington, proving

there was no collusion between President Donald Trump's

campaign and the Russians.

If sanctions were eased.

That could mean foreign investors come back

to Russia and trade increases, helping prop up the ruble

and increasing the Russian stock market.

In a region that's always busy with news,

2019 is expected to be even more so.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu

has found himself embroiled in a series of overlapping

investigations.

Now both he and the country are waiting

to see if Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit will

accept police recommendations.

Secondly, both Israelis and Palestinians

are waiting to see whether or not US President Donald

Trump will finally unveil his long promised

deal of the century.

It was a promise by the White House

to bring Israelis and Palestinians back

to the negotiating table.

Here in the Nordic-Baltic region,

2019 will be a year of elections.

There are votes in Estonia, Finland, and Denmark

with the possibility of new elections in Sweden.

The hope will be that forming a viable government is possible.

And for that, it will be crucial to see

how much populist parties gain.

Hong Kong sits on the front line of

a nascent political and economic battle between Xi Jinping's

China and the West.

My greatest hope is that the US and China eventually

learn to live with the profound differences between them

and perhaps the Communist Party learns

that by taking a softer line, it might also give itself

more breathing space.

Song For The New Year [Visual Poetry] - Duration: 1:15.

Old Time has turned another page Of eternity and truth;

He reads with a warning voice to age, And whispers a lesson to youth.

A year has fled o'er heart and head Since last the yule log burnt;

And we have a task to closely ask, What the bosom and brain have learnt?

Oh! let us hope that our sands have run With wisdom's precious grains;

Oh! may we find that our hands have done Some work of glorious pains.

Then a welcome and cheer to the merry new year,

While the holly gleams above us; With a pardon for the foes who hate,

And a prayer for those who love us.

(*)

>> Rosemary: ON THIS MONDAY

NIGHT...

>> WE SEE THEM AND NOW WE CAN

PULL THEM OVER.

>> Rosemary: WITH THE NEW YEAR

COMES NEW LAWS, INCLUDING SOME

OF THE TOUGHEST IN THE COUNTRY.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE

NEW PENALTIES WHEN YOU REACH FOR

YOUR PHONE.

(*)

>> THERE'S NO JOKE.

THIS IS

SOMEONE WHO IS UPSET BECAUSE

PEOPLE CAME OUT OF A TRAGEDY AND

THEY HAVE BECOME CIVICALLY

ENGAGED?

>> Rosemary: COMEDIAN LOUIS

C.K. STIRS FRESH OUTRAGE WITH

TONE DEAF JOKES THAT MOCK

SURVIVORS OF THE PARKLAND SCHOOL

SHOOTING.

>> HOW MANY OF YOU?

>> THIS IS A CIRCUS.

>> Rosemary: AND A LOOK BACK

AT THE YEAR THAT WAS FROM CAVES

AND COURTS TO CELEBRATIONS.

PLUS THE LIVES LIVED AND LOST IN

2018.

THIS IS "THE NATIONAL."

(*)

>>> WE ARE JUST HOURS AWAY FROM

2019 AND PEOPLE ACROSS THE

COUNTRY

HAVE A NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTION IN

MIND FOR CANADIANS.

IF YOU'RE STILL IN THE HABIT OF

REACHING FOR YOUR PHONES WHILE

BEHIND THE WHEEL, GIVE IT UP OR

FACE THE CONSEQUENCES.

AS OLIVIA STEFANOVICH EXPLAINS,

DRIVERS HAD BETTER START PAYING

ATTENTION IF THEY WANT TO STAY

ON THE ROAD.

>> JUST DRIVE UP AND DOWN THE

SHOULDER HERE...

>> Reporter: ON CANADA'S

BUSIEST HIGHWAY IT DOESN'T TAKE

LONG FOR ONTARIO PROVINCIAL

POLICE SERGEANT CARY SCHMIDT TO

SPOT A DISTRACTED DRIVER.

>> HOW ARE YOU DOING?

YOU KNOW WHY I'M STOPPING YOU?

>> PROBABLY BECAUSE I HAD MY

PHONE.

>> PROBABLY BECAUSE YOU HAD YOUR

PHONE.

>> Reporter: AND THE EXCUSE?

>> I HAD A CALL FROM WORK AND

THEY HAD A

QUESTION AND I TOOK THE CALL.

>> Reporter: IT'S A REFLEX

THAT ONTARIO IS TRYING TO PUT

THE BRAKES ON.

STARTING TOMORROW DRIVERS CAUGHT

TALKING, TEXTING, DIALLING OR

LOOKING UP DIRECTIONS ON THEIR

HANDHELD DEVICES WILL BE FINED

UP TO $1,000.

AND THEY WILL RECEIVE THREE

DEMERIT POINTS AND LOSE THEIR

LICENCE FOR THREE DAYS.

IF THEY'RE CAUGHT AGAIN IT WILL

COST THEM $2,000.

A THIRD TIME?

$3,000.

THEY'RE THE TOUGHEST PENALTIES

FOR REPEAT DISTRACTED DRIVERS IN

THE COUNTRY.

IT'S ENOUGH TO MAKE THIS DRIVER

CHANGE HIS BEHAVIOUR.

THIS WILL MAKE YOU THINK TWICE?

>> THIS WILL MAKE ME THINK THREE

TIMES, ACTUALLY.

>> Reporter: DISTRACTED

DRIVING HAS BEEN A LEADING CAUSE

OF DEATH ON ONTARIO ROADS FOR

THE LAST FIVE YEARS.

CLAIMING 83 LIVES IN 2018.

>> IT'S ABSOLUTELY HEARTBREAKING

AND FRUSTRATING.

>> Reporter: BUT SOME FEEL

THAT THE NEW LAWS DON'T GO FAR

ENOUGH.

THIS LEGAL EXPERT IS PUSHING FOR

A PRIVATE MEMBER'S BILL IN THE

ONTARIO LEGISLATURE THAT WOULD

FORCE OFFENDERS TO TAKE

MANDATORY DRIVING COURSES AND

PERFORM COMMUNITY SERVICE.

>> IT'S A MEANINGFUL PENALTY SO

THAT YOU HAVE A REAL DETERRENT

OUT THERE.

>> Reporter: OTHERS WANT TO

SEE A BROADER EDUCATIONAL

CAMPAIGN TO CONVINCE PEOPLE JUST

HOW DANGEROUS DISTRACTED DRIVING

IS.

>> HELPING PEOPLE TO RECOGNIZE

THAT WOULD BE AN IMPORTANT STEP

FORWARD.

>> Reporter: SCHMIDT AGREES.

>> WE NEED EVERYONE TO REALLY

STEP UP AND TO MAKE THIS

SOCIALLY UNACCEPTABLE.

>> Reporter: HE SAYS THAT

POLICE CAN'T KICK IT INTO

COMPLIANCE BUT STARTING TOMORROW

THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT THEY'LL DO.

OLIVIA STEFANOVICH, CBC NEWS,

TORONTO.

>> Rosemary: OF COURSE

DISTRACTED DRIVING IS NOT JUST

AN ONTARIO ISSUE, IT'S A

NATIONAL ONE AND ALMOST EVERY

PROVINCE OR TERRITORY HAS SOME

FORM OF LAW LIMITING THE USE OF

CELLPHONES.

MANY OF THEM, IN FACT, WERE JUST

TOUGHENED UP THIS YEAR.

ACCORDING TO C.A.A., DRIVERS

WILL BE DOCKED BETWEEN THREE AND

SIX DEMERIT POINTS FOR EACH

CONVICTION.

THE FINES RUN FROM A MINIMUM OF

$173 IN NEW BRUNSWICK AS OLIVIA

MENTIONED THERE UP TO $3,000 FOR

A REPEATED OFFENSE IN ONTARIO.

THE ONLY EXCEPTION IS NUNAVUT

WHERE THERE'S NO DISTRACTED

DRIVING LAW, YET ANYWAY.

AND OTTAWA WILL ALSO BE HOSTING

IN A WHOLE

HOST OF TAX CHANGES TOMORROW

AFFECTING CANADIANS AND

BUSINESSES.

CANADA'S PENSION PLAN WILL START

TO COST A LITTLE MORE THIS YEAR.

ITS CONTRIBUTIONS INCREASE

SLIGHTLY.

IT'S A MOVE MEANT TO IMPROVE THE

PLAN OVER THE LONG TERM AND ONE

THAT MOSTLY BENEFITS CANADIANS

JUST ENTERING THE WORKFORCE.

EMPLOYMENT INSURANCE PREMIUMS

WILL DROP TO MAKE UP SOME OF

THOSE COSTS.

SMALL BUSINESS WILL SEE

IMMEDIATE RELIEF IN THE NEW YEAR

WITH THEIR TAX RATE FALLING FROM

10% TO 9%.

OTTAWA WANTS TO ENCOURAGE OWNERS

TO REINVEST THEIR EARNINGS BACK

IN THEIR BUSINESS OR HIRE MORE

PEOPLE RATHER THAN SITTING ON

THE CASH SO THAT SMALL BUSINESS

HAS MORE THAN $50,000 IN PASSIVE

INCOME -- MONEY BEING SAVED

INSIDE OF

THE BUSINESS, IT WILL LOSE

ACCESS TO THE LOWER TAX RATE.

THIS YEAR

ALSO MARKS THE YEAR WHEN THE

FEDERAL CARBON TAX PLAN WILL HIT

ALL PROVINCES AND IMPOSED ON

THOSE WHO DON'T HAVE THEIR OWN.

FOR CONSUMERS OTTAWA ESTIMATES

THAT IT MEANS AN EXTRA 4.42

CENTS PER LITRE AT THE PUMP BUT

THE GOVERNMENT ALSO SAYS THAT IT

WILL GIVE OUT AN ANNUAL REBATE

THAT SHOULD OFFSET THOSE

INCREASES.

>>> BRITAIN AND FRANCE WILL TRY

TO STOP MIGRANTS FROM REACHING

THE U.K. BY BOAT.

UNTIL RECENTLY IT WAS RARE FOR

MIGRANTS TO ARRIVE THERE BY SEA,

BUT ABOUT 240 PEOPLE HAVE COME

ASHORE SINCE

NOVEMBER.

AS BRIAR STEWART REPORTS, THEY

ARE URGING POLITICIANS TO TRY TO

KEEP THINGS IN PERSPECTIVE.

>> Reporter: THIS MORNING ON A

BEACH IN SOUTHEAST ENGLAND A

FAMILIAR SCENE -- AN INFLATABLE

RAFT.

THIS ONE CARRIED 12 IRANIAN

MIGRANTS, INCLUDING A

10-YEAR-OLD CHILD ACROSS THE

CHANNEL.

IT'S A STRETCH OF

WATER NOW MORE CLOSELY WATCHED

BY BRITISH AUTHORITIES.

>> GIVEN THE CURRENT SITUATION

THE RIGHT THING TO DO IS TO

REDEPLOY SOME OF THOSE ASSETS

AND MAKE SURE THAT WE'RE

BOTH PROTECTING HUMAN LIFE BUT

AT THE

SAME TIME PROTECTING OUR

BORDERS.

>> Reporter: THE U.K. IS

PULLING BACK TWO OF ITS SHIPS

FROM THE MEDITERRANEAN AND

STATIONING THEM IN THE ENGLISH

CHANNEL WHERE THEY'LL JOIN ONE

OTHER BOAT ALREADY ON PATROL.

>> GOOD MORNING, HOME SECRETARY.

>> Reporter: TODAY THE HOME

SECRETARY MET WITH THE U.K.

BORDER FORCES AFTER HE AND OTHER

OFFICIALS FOUND THEMSELVES UNDER

INCREASING PRESSURE TO DO

SOMETHING.

SINCE CHRISTMAS EVE IT'S

ESTIMATED THAT MORE THAN 100

MIGRANTS HAVE MADE THE PERILOUS

CROSSING.

AND SOME ARE NOW CALLING FOR

THEM TO BE SENT BACK.

THE M.P. FOR DOVER EVEN WANTS TO

SEE THE BRITISH BOAT BE ALLOWED

TO DROP THE MIGRANTS BACK OFF IN

FRANCE.

>> SO THAT ANYONE FOUND IN THE

ENGLISH CHANNEL IN ONE OF THESE

UN-SEAWORTHY CRAFT CAN BE HELPED

CAREFULLY AND SAFELY BACK TO THE

FRENCH COAST THAT THEY KNOW THAT

THERE'S NO CHANCE OF GETTING

INTO BRITAIN.

>> Reporter: THAT WILL ALMOST

CERTAINLY BE A TOUGH SELL.

STILL, THERE ARE OTHERS WHO

THINK THAT THE WHOLE

CONVERSATION HAS BEEN TOTALLY

BLOWN OUT OF PROPORTION IN

BRITAIN.

CONSIDERING THAT THERE ARE MUCH

POORER COUNTRIES WHO ARE TAKING

IN MANY MORE PEOPLE, LIKE THE

700,000 ROHINGYA REFUGEES WHO

FLED TO BANGLADESH.

>> NOW WE SEE, AND IN OTHER

PLACES, HUGE NUMBERS OF PEOPLE

FORCED ACROSS BORDERS AND HERE

WE ARE HAVING A MASSIVE PANIC

OVER A COUPLE DOZEN PEOPLE WHO

HAVE ARRIVED ON THE COAST.

>> Reporter: BUT OFFICIALS

DON'T LIKE THE TREND.

AND THEY'RE TRYING TO GET A HAND

-- HANDLE ON IT BEFORE MORE

PEOPLE THINK

THAT THIS IS A NEW PATH FOR

ASYLUM IN U.K.

BRIAR STEWART, CBC NEWS, LONDON.

>> Rosemary: IN SOME QUARTERS

ELIZABETH WARREN IS KNOWN AS A

TRUMP PUNCHLINE.

THE FIREBRAND U.S. SENATOR FROM

MASSACHUSETTS

THOUGH IS DETERMINED TO CHANGE

THAT.

WARREN IS THE FIRST PROMINENT

DEMOCRAT CONTENDER TO STEP

FORWARD AND ANNOUNCE THAT SHE

MAY BE PREPARING A PRESIDENTIAL

BID, BUT SHE CERTAINLY WON'T BE

THE LAST.

AS RON CHARLES EXPLAINS, TO GET

TO TRUMP, WARREN FIRST NEEDS TO

WIN OVER DEMOCRATS.

>> I'M ELIZABETH

WARREN, THIS IS MY HUSBAND.

SINCE I MADE THE ANNOUNCEMENT

THIS MORNING I HAVE ALREADY

RECEIVED DONATIONS FROM ALL 50

STATES, THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA

AND PUERTO RICO.

>> Reporter: ELIZABETH WARREN

ISN'T COMMITTING TO RUNNING JUST

YET BUT AN EXPLORATORY COMMITTEE

ALLOWS HER TO GATHER MONEY AND

STAFF.

THE FORMER HARVARD LAW PROFESSOR

PROMOTES POPULISM FROM THE LEFT.

>> I'M IN THIS FIGHT BECAUSE

I UNDERSTAND WHAT'S HAPPENING TO

WORKING FAMILIES.

>> Reporter: TAKING ON BIG

BANKS AND CORPORATE C.E.O.s

AND THE POLITICIANS WHO SUPPORT

THEM.

>> THE PROBLEM THAT WE HAVE

GOT RIGHT NOW IN WASHINGTON IS

THAT

IT WORKS GREAT FOR THOSE WHO

HAVE THE MONEY TO BUY INFLUENCE.

>> Reporter: WARREN FACES A

POTENTIALLY CROWDED FIELD FOR

THE DEMOCRATIC NOMINATION.

POTENTIAL RIVALS?

SOME OF HER YOUNG SENATE

COLLEAGUES INCLUDING KAMALA

HARRIS AND CORY BOOKER AND

KIRSTEN GILLIBRAND AND JOE BIDEN

AND SENATOR SANDERS.

BUT THE DEMOCRATIC POLITICAL

CONSULTANT PREDICTS THAT A DREAM

TICKET THAT DOESN'T INCLUDE

WARREN.

>> JOE BIDEN LOOKS BETTER BY THE

MINUTE WITH KAMALA HARRIS AS THE

VICE PRESIDENT AND IT GIVES

EVERYTHING, GENDER

MINUTE WITH KAMALA HARRIS AS THE

VICE PRESIDENT AND IT GIVES

EVERYTHING, GENDER AND RACE AND

GIVES THEM EXPERIENCE.

>> Reporter: ALSO WARREN IS

NOT WITHOUT CONTROVERSY AND

MISSTEPS.

SHE RESPONDED TO DONALD TRUMP'S

TAUNTS ABOUT HER CLAIMS TO

NATIVE AMERICAN ANCESTORY --

>> President Donald Trump:

THEY CALL HER POCOHONTAS.

>> Reporter: TAKING A

D.N.A. TEST THAT SUGGEST SOMEDAY

-- SUGGESTED SOME

NATIVE BLOOD BUT THAT ANGERED

SOME NATIVE LEADERS WHO SAY IT'S

ABOUT MORE THAN D.N.A.

>> IF WE ORGANIZE TOGETHER...

>> Reporter: A CAMPAIGN-STYLE

VIDEO THAT

WARREN RELEASED TODAY SHOWS A

COUPLE IMAGES OF DONALD TRUMP

AND DESCRIBES WHERE SHE BELIEVES

THAT HE'S TAKING THE NATION.

>> President Donald Trump:

BUILD THAT WALL!

>> THIS DARK PATH DOESN'T HAVE

TO BE OUR FUTURE.

>> Reporter: BUT SHE NEVER

MENTIONS HIM BY NAME, A NEW TACT

IN WHAT PROMISES TO BE A

LONG AND COMBATIVE CONTEST.

RON CHARLES, CBC NEWS,

WASHINGTON.

>> Rosemary: STAYING IN

WASHINGTON, IF ANYONE EXPECTED

SOME NEW YEAR TURNAROUND IN THE

10-DAY-LONG U.S. GOVERNMENT

SHUTDOWN, THOSE HOPES WERE

DASHED WITH THE DROP OF A GAVEL

TODAY.

>> UNDER THE PREVIOUS ORDER THE

SENATE STANDS ADJOURNED TO 4:00

p.m., ON WEDNESDAY

JANUARY 2nd, 2019.

>> Rosemary: THAT'S A WRAP IN

THE U.S. SENATE.

BOTH CHAMBERS OF CONGRESS WERE

OPEN FOR JUST A FEW MINUTES

TODAY WITH EXACTLY ZERO ACTION

TO END THE SHUTDOWN.

THE PROBLEM, OF COURSE, IS THAT

LAWMAKERS ARE STILL UP AGAINST A

WALL.

DONALD TRUMP'S WALL, IN FACT.

THE U.S. PRESIDENT CONTINUES TO

DEMAND A BARRIER ACROSS THE

U.S.-MEXICAN BORDER.

THE NEW DEMOCRATIC-LED HOUSE IS

EXPECTED TO PASS A BILL FUNDING

THE GOVERNMENT AGAIN, BUT THERE

WILL BE NO MONEY FOR A WALL.

SPEAKING OF THINGS THAT TRUMP

WANTS...

>> I THINK THAT THE PRESIDENT IS

VERY COMMITTED TO MAKING SURE

THAT WHEN WE LEAVE SYRIA THAT

ISIS IS COMPLETELY DEFEATED.

SO I THINK THAT WE'RE IN A PAUSE

SITUATION.

>> Rosemary: THAT WAS THE U.S.

REPUBLICAN SENATOR LINDSEY

GRAHAM

SEEMINGLY REASSURED BY THE

PRESIDENT'S SYRIA POLICY.

TRUMP'S RECENT DECISION TO PULL

U.S. TROOPS FROM SYRIA WAS

CONTROVERSIAL.

IT EVEN PROMPTED THE RESIGNATION

OF HIS DEFENCE SECRETARY.

BUT BY TWEET TODAY THE PRESIDENT

SEEMED TO CONFIRM GRAHAM'S

REMARKS THAT IT'S NOT THE RAPID

WITHDRAW IT ORIGINALLY LOOKED

AT, SAYING, QUOTE, "WE'RE

SLOWLY SENDING OUR TROOPS BACK

HOME."

>>> DUTCH MILITARY POLICE HAVE

ARRESTED A 51-YEAR-OLD CANADIAN

MAN AFTER A BOMB THREAT AT

AMSTERDAM'S AIRPORT.

THE DEPARTURE AND ARRIVAL HALLS

WERE EVACUATED AS A PRECAUTION.

NO EXPLOSIVES WERE FOUND AND THE

AIRPORT HAS SINCE REOPENED.

THE INVESTIGATION IS ONGOING AND

POLICE EXPECT TO HAVE AN UPDATE

TOMORROW.

>>> TODAY IS THE TAX DEADLINE

FOR CHARITABLE DONATIONS IN 2018

AND IF PREVIOUS YEARS ARE ANY

INDICATION, CANADIANS

WILL GIVE AT LEAST $14 BILLION

TO HELP OTHERS.

BUT AS KAREN PAULS TELLS US,

BABY BOOMERS, THEY GIVE A LOT,

YOUNGER CANADIANS LESS.

AND FOR A CHARITY THAT SHE SPOKE

TO, THAT'S A DISTURBING TREND.

>> AND WE JUST MET... THEY

MENTIONED THAT GOING TO SCHOOL

IS LIKE A DREAM...

>> Reporter: HER GRADE FIVE

GLOBAL CITIZEN CLUB IS LEARNING

WHY 58 MILLION CHILDREN AROUND

THE WORLD ARE NOT IN SCHOOL LIKE

THEY ARE.

>> IT'S A LONG WAY TO SCHOOL.

AND THERE MIGHT BE PEOPLE TRYING

TO CATCH YOU AND TRYING

TO SHOOT GUNS.

>> THEY DON'T HAVE WASHROOMS.

>> Reporter: SHE LIVED IN

LEBANON'S WAR ZONE FOR 17 YEARS

SO SHE KNOWS FIRSTHAND WHY IT'S

IMPORTANT TO TEACH MORE

FORTUNATE CHILDREN ABOUT SOCIAL

JUSTICE AND PHILANTHROPY.

>> AND TO TURN THIS EMPATHY AND

COMPASSION INTO ACTION.

>> Reporter: REACHING YOUNG

PEOPLE HAS BECOME A TOP PRIORITY

FOR CHARITIES.

SOME RECENT STUDIES SHOW THAT

CANADIANS OVER 50 DONATE 75% OF

ALL INDIVIDUAL GIFTS WORTH

$4.3 BILLION.

AND THE NEXT GENERATION ISN'T

STEPPING UP.

DONORS UNDER 40 DROPPED TO 22%

IN 2014, FROM 41% IN 1985.

AS ELDERLY PARENTS PASS DOWN

THEIR WEALTH, CHARITIES LIKE

THIS ONE AREN'T NECESSARILY

BENEFITING FROM IT.

THAT'S BECAUSE THEIR CHILDREN

MAY BE USING THAT MONEY TO PAY

DOWN THEIR DEBT, GO ON A TRIP,

OR TO BUY A COTTAGE.

>> IF WE'RE TO LOOK AT ABOUT 30%

OF GIVING HEADING THAT WAY, IF

THAT DOESN'T TRANSLATE INTO

CONTINUED GIVING THAT WILL PUT

SIGNIFICANT FINANCIAL STRESS ON

AN ALREADY STRESSED CHARITABLE

FUNDRAISING SYSTEM.

THE KIND OF FUNDRAISING APPROACH

THAT YOU MAY TAKE FOR A

75-YEAR-OLD DONOR VERSUS A

20-YEAR-OLD DONOR, THAT

MESSAGING, THAT VERY DELIVERY

VEHICLE, MIGHT BE QUITE

DIFFERENT.

>> Reporter: FOR EXAMPLE,

UNICEF CANADA HAS DONE AWAY WITH

KIDS USED TO CARRY AT HALLOWEEN.

IT'S NOW FOCUSING ON EDUCATING

MISCONDUCT.

THE COMIC THEN ADMITTED THEIR

CLAIMS WERE TRUE FOR THE MOST

PART.

HE PLEDGED TO STEP BACK AND TO

TAKE SOME TIME TO LISTEN.

TODAY THOUGH PEOPLE ARE

LISTENING TO LOUIS C.K. ONCE

AGAIN AND MANY ARE ANGERED BY

WHO HE'S CHOSEN TO RIDICULE --

SURVIVORS OF THE WORST SCHOOL

THE CBC'S CHRIS O'NEILL-YATES

CHALLENGES.

HE ALSO LASHES

OUT AT PARKLAND STUDENTS FOR

MOUNTING A GUN CONTROL CAMPAIGN

AND TESTIFYING BEFORE CONGRESS

AFTER 17 PEOPLE WERE KILLED AT A

SCHOOL SHOOTING.

>> YOU'RE NOT INTERESTING

BECAUSE YOU WENT TO A HIGH

WHY DID THAT MEAN I HAVE TO

LISTEN TO YOU TALKING?

>> Reporter: FOR THOSE WHO

>> HE'S PRETTY MUCH LIKE, THESE

AND THE PROBLEM IS THAT HE

DIDN'T MAKE AN ACTUAL GENUINE

EFFORT TO LISTEN.

>> Reporter: RYAN IS A

SURVIVOR OF THE SHOOTING AND AN

ANTI-GUN ACTIVIST AND TWEETED

"IT'S A SHAME WHEN YOU SINK SO

LOW THAT YOUR COMEBACK PLAN IS

TO MAKE FUN OF SCHOOL SURVIVORS

FOR SPEAKING OUT."

AND FRED GUTTENBERG TWEETED "TO

ANYONE WHO KNOWS LOUIS C.K.,

PLEASE DELIVER THIS MESSAGE FOR

ME.

MY DAUGHTER WAS KILLED IN THE

PARKLAND SHOOTING.

MY SON RAN AWAY FROM THE

BULLETS.

MY WIFE AND I DEAL WITH LOSS

EVERY DAY.

WHY DON'T YOU COME TO MY HOUSE

AND TRY OUT YOUR NEW PATHETIC

JOKES."

IF THIS IS AN IDEA OF A COME

DEGREE BACK, IT'S NOT FUNNY.

>> WHERE IS THE JOKE?

THAT'S WHAT NO ONE IS ABLE TO

EXPLAIN TO ME AT THIS POINT.

THERE'S NO JOKE.

IT'S JUST SOMEONE WHO IS UPSET

BECAUSE PEOPLE CAME OUT OF A

TRAGEDY AND THEY HAVE BECOME

CIVICALLY ENGAGED?

IS THAT WHAT THE JOKE IS?

>> Reporter: BUT LOUIS C.K.

SEEMS TO SAY THAT HE

REALLY CAN'T SINK ANY FURTHER.

>> WHAT ARE YOU, GONNA TAKE AWAY

MY BIRTHDAY IN MY LIFE IS OVER,

I DON'T GIVE A...

YOU CAN BE OFFENDED, IT'S OKAY.

YOU CAN GET MAD AT ME.

>> Reporter: JUDGING FROM ALL

OF THE LAUGHTER, THE CROWD LOVED

IT.

CHRIS O'NEILL-YATES, CBC NEWS,

VANCOUVER.

>> Rosemary: YOU MAY REMEMBER

THAT IN RESPONSE TO THE PARKLAND

SCHOOL SHOOTING THAT DONALD

TRUMP SUGGESTED ARMING TEACHERS

TO PROTECT DEFENSELESS STUDENTS

AND STAFF.

WE SENT OUR PHOTOJOURNALIST

LEONARDO PALLEJA TO WHERE

TEACHERS ARE TAUGHT TO USE A GUN

IN AN EMERGENCY.

THIS IS WHAT HE SAW "BEHIND THE

LENS."

>> I THINK THAT IT'S THAT MOMENT

WHEN THE PICTURE TELLS THE WHOLE

STORY.

(gunshots)

POLICE FIRE, POLICE FIRE.

>> SO THE ONE THAT I REMEMBER

REALLY WELL VIVIDLY IS THE ONE

THAT WE SHOT IN ARLINGTON,

TEXAS.

IT WAS JUST AFTER THE SHOOTING

IN PARKLAND IN FLORIDA.

MAYBE LESS THAN 10 DAYS AFTER

THAT WE WERE AT AN ACADEMY WHICH

WAS TRAINING TEACHERS TO CARRY

FIREARMS IN CLASSROOMS.

SO THESE TEACHERS HAD TO FACE

THESE SHOOTERS THAT WERE COMING

TO THE CLASSROOM AND THEY WERE

SHOOTING WITH TRAINING ROUNDS

THAT WERE 10 TIMES MORE POWERFUL

THAN A PAINTBALL GUN.

SO IF THEY HIT YOU, THEY HURT.

THE ONE TEACHER'S NAME WAS DAZEY

AND WE FOLLOWING HER SINCE THE

BEGINNING OF THE TRAINING.

THERE WAS THIS MOMENT WHEN THIS

SHOOTER ENTERS THROUGH THE DOOR

OF THE CLASSROOM AND SHE FACES

HIM.

>> GO, GO, GO!

(gunshots).

>> GET OVER IN THE CORNER.

PUT CHAIRS IN FRONT OF YOU.

>> SHE TRIES TO SHOOT BUT SHE

CAN'T AND SHE FUMBLES THE GUN

AND SHE IS NOW PROTECTING

HERSELF WITH ONE OF HER HANDS.

AND SO YOU THINK HOW THAT MAKES

NO SENSE.

FOR ME TO SEE HER FACE, HER

EXPRESSION, I NEEDED TO BE

THERE.

I WASN'T EVEN THINKING THAT I

COULD BE SHOT AT, WHICH I WAS.

BUT IT DOESN'T MATTER, RIGHT,

WHEN YOU'RE TRYING TO GET THE

SHOT, THAT'S WHAT MATTERS MOST.

YEAH, THERE'S PRESSURE TO DO IT

AS WELL AND WITH THE PRESSURE,

YOU KNOW, I KIND OF WELCOMED

THAT FEELING THAT THIS PRESSURE

TO GET THIS POTENTIALLY GREAT

MOMENT.

>> Rosemary: WE'LL HAVE TO
