NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTIONS | Common Mistakes to Avoid for 2019 - Duration: 8:01.
The New Year is quickly approaching!
You know what that means - countless New Year's resolutions that you will create, and fail
to follow through on.
Only 9.2 percent of people ever achieve their New Year's resolutions.
But after watching this video, your odds will be much improved.
What's going on guys, Dr. Jubbal, MedSchoolInsiders.com.
So many of us get a jolt of excitement and inspiration for the New Year.
New Year, New You.
It's a clean slate – a chance to redefine yourself.
So you set off on creating a list of things you want to do differently this year, and
12 months later, you find yourself leaving these promises unfulfilled.
And then the cycle repeats. So why do New Year's Resolutions fail?
The problem isn't you.
The problem is your system.
Right now, you rely on bursts of motivation and inspiration to carry your behavior changes.
But as I've spoken about at length in other videos, that doesn't sustain you.
You don't rise to the level of your goals.
You fall to the level of your systems.
Not only that, but most of us suck at creating goals.
We say things like "quit smoking" or "lose weight".
Maybe you've set out to "read more books" or "eat more healthy food" or even "learn
to play an instrument."
These goals place the focus way down the road, at the finish line.
In short, it's unrealistic, unsustainable, and doomed to fail.
When setting your New Year's resolutions and defining your goals, they should be S.M.A.R.T.
Obviously you don't want stupid goals, but when I say S.M.A.R.T., I'm referring to
goals that are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Results-focused, and Time-bound.
Rather than "read more books," try "read
one non-fiction book every 2 weeks by spending 30 minutes each night reading before sleeping."
Rather than "get in shape," try "losing
5 pounds of body fat in 8 weeks by tracking my food intake and eating at a deficit of 400 calories."
Rather than "double my bench press," try
"improving 1 rep max by 10% in 3 months."
Rather than "go on social media less,"
try "track social media use daily using iOS Screen Time and secure an average of 15
minutes or less per day over 7 days."
Rather than "learn to play an instrument,"
try "learn to play one song on guitar in 3 weeks."
Nice!
Now your goals are rock solid and you're ready to take on all the New Year's resolutions,
right?
Not so fast.
Even with rock solid S.M.A.R.T.
goals, you're still quite likely to face some road blocks.
With too many goals and too few systems in place to reliably implement and sustain them,
it just won't work.
Instead, as Charles Duhigg points out in the Power of Habit, focus on a keystone habit
that results in a domino effect aligning multiple other areas in your life.
Small incremental improvements are more likely than dramatic shifts to result in the outcome
you desire.
For me, that was simply prioritizing going to the gym at minimum 5 days, but optimally
6 days per week.
That was the keystone habit.
I didn't target a certain weight on my lifts, rapid muscle gain, cardiovascular fitness,
or postural improvements.
All of those are important outcomes to me, but I knew they would fall in line if I just
managed to be consistent in going to the gym.
And after a few months of sticking to it, I'm proud to say I've come a long way.
Going to the gym almost every day required me to ride my bike, so my cardiovascular fitness
improved.
Lifting regularly contributed to an increase in appetite, so I added mass and strength.
I performed a balanced weight training program, so naturally my posture and flexibility improved
as well.
Figure out what your own keystone habit is and drive your energy and focus there.
Embrace the Inevitable Look, it's going to happen.
Whether one week or one month into the new year, you're going to slip up.
You'll miss that day at the gym, or you'll find yourself watching F1 racing when you
should have been studying instead.
The fact that you slipped in a moment of weakness isn't the important part.
The important part is what you do next.
If you get discouraged, give up, and revert back to your old ways, then you've failed.
But if you know you're going to have bumps along the way, then you'll get back up,
brush it off, and re-evaluate your system and strengthen it so that it doesn't happen
again.
Going back to my regular gym sessions – I found that when I pushed the session
past 6PM, I had a much higher failure rate.
After realizing this pattern, I readjusted my system and began ensuring I would go to
the gym in the morning or at latest mid-afternoon.
Lastly, don't feel pressured into making
New Year's resolutions.
I used to since everyone else did, But now, I haven't made New Year's resolutions
in years.
I find that it just doesn't appeal to my personality.
For those of you who are scratching your heads, check out my video on the four personality
tendencies, where I go over how you can use study hacks and productivity habits that cater
to your personality type.
As a questioner, the way I see it is, I create new habits and implement systems any time
of the year, not on an arbitrary day just because it's a new year.
For example, in 2013 I started a plant-based diet just 3 days before Thanksgiving.
I'm no longer on a plant based diet, but that's another story.
People thought I was crazy for starting this diet shift just days before a holiday that
focuses on food, but to me, it didn't matter whether I started the day before Thanksgiving
or the day after.
It was a decision I made and I was focused on implementing it, regardless of outside variables.
This works for me, but it isn't for everyone, and there's nothing wrong with setting New
Year's resolutions.
But I urge you to not get carried away in the self-congratulatory behavior of setting resolutions,
and instead focus on implementing the systems that, over the long term, will deliver the
results that you seek.

am going to be drawing some more of your OCS today or original characters and I
wanted to ask you guys first do you have any plans for the new years like for New
Year's Eve or anything like that right now I know that my son is going to be
going to California so he'll be getting on a play but we don't really have any
big plans maybe watching New Year's rockin Eve or something like that
and that reminds me you got to get to Miami know which is Paula boxart and we
have a contest up there which is draw your year and I think that's gonna be
really neat I like looking at what everybody puts in but that's actually in

my gosh is she not cute this is by cloud fire 444 and I found her on Instagram
but then I found out she also has a me know so it's kind of weird though that I
was searching Instagram and I decided to draw her because I do search the tag

really liked her Oh see I thought it was so cute but I don't know we'll just see
how she comes along like with the hair and everything but I just love how she
designed her it's so pretty I mean she's got like the dark hair on one side and
the thing and gold color eyes which I had a little
bit of trouble with and also a rainbow shirt which I really really like okay so
it's just like happy it's some really happy character so I really liked doing
this one but you know what I was thinking about New Year's what when you
think back to the year what do you think of the most I mean from the past year I
did a lot of fun things but you know what I can't pinpoint one thing that
really sticks out except I did go to California which was fun I went to visit
with my daughter this was back in the summer and we went to go see her
boyfriend and everything down there and that was a lot of fun but I'm trying to
think what all I did you know I mean do you ever get like that like you look
back you probably remember things like you know if you're younger you probably
remember things in school that happened you know things like that
but actually the year went by so fast how is that even possible
have you seen any movie you know what I love movies I was thinking of that the
other day I have not seen that many movies lately
but we did actually today go to feed bumblebee you know the Transformers
movie oh my gosh I thought it was really good you have to tell me if you saw it
and what you thought about it I actually cried okay it really got to me it really
did it was it was heartwarming it was such a good movie I really enjoyed it I
really did but actually we even saw Ralph breaks the internet I don't know
if I told you this yet but we did go see that and I thought that was really good
the part with the Disney Princesses oh my gosh I just I just loved that I
thought it was just great did you see it seriously and what movies are you hyped
for right now I know I'm like off on movies I mean this is like about drawing
and I'm talking about movies what wait okay so maybe I should get back to
drawing this series like tell me what you thought about it
but I had a lot of fun like trying to do the highlights and everything in this
hair and trying to shade it I am still learning seriously you know I have so
much to learn about drawing do you ever feel like that sometimes it's like
overwhelming and I've been looking at a lot of you guys on a Meno and one thing
I've noticed is that a lot of people like the tablets for drawing which is
really cool and I know a lot of you got them for Christmas so seriously I bet
you're really happy about that if you did get one but I don't know what do you
used to draw I am using a Cintiq am I saying it right it's one of the bamboo I
might be getting the name wrong but I actually borrow it off my daughter so
it's a smaller one though it's not Bethany's at Sierra's actually but I've
been using that and I really like it I mean it has a pen that comes with it
I think it's called bamboo I could be wrong I I can't remember the name
exactly but I really really like it oh my gosh
I mean I was trying to actually draw with my mouth and that is impossible so
there you are actually she turned out okay I suppose I'm never really happy
with my drawings I don't know why are you like that so anyway let's go on with
the next one now this one is by now I'm probably gonna say this wrong crowed B
night uncrazy night see I already messed it up but anyway they were actually
first-place winner in the cartoon contest on my Amino seriously I was so
amazed by the art style and it was just so pretty and just so perfect if you go
to Miami no you have got to look at the people that won the contest the cartoon
contest I thought it was so neat and actually we just got done with another
contest which was a winter imagination oh my gosh the entries in that were
beautiful but anyway on to this one he won first place so I am doing the oath
see in this video and actually make sure you check out the amino also because
they have a lot of good art I mean seriously a lot but anyway I actually
have some things to tell you about this character as you can tell it's a very
unique character OC and let me tell you what they told me about it which is
really cool okay you know it's a Phoenix I'm sure you can figure that out with
all the reds but I just love their design I was so nervous
about drawing this you have no idea I was like how am I gonna draw that that
is so good and so pretty and everything but I did my best and you know I have to
turn everything into a TV right I mean someday I may try an actual anime style
but right now I'm doing TV so just know if you send in your OC it's gonna look
like a TV okay the name is Knight they are Phoenix you can call them a he or a
she nightmostly spends their time in long journeys they much prefer spending
time with creatures than humans since humans are so complicated oh my gosh
aren't they and sometimes really stupid okay I know that because I'm one of
those no I'm just kidding I know I mean maybe a little okay just a little though
not that much maybe I don't know but anyway if you ever encounter them don't
attempt to even try to order them that's kind of scary Knight doesn't follow
orders at all they are very shy and doesn't really make eye contact with
people Knight is a pretty young bird which is mature enough to make good
decisions knights also really sensitive but uses their sensitivity as a strength
rather than a weakness that's really neat isn't it they always carry around a
Bert wooden stick as their weapon the stick is actually magical the end the
toys on fire can release toxic smoke or sin
that can calm people or animals down that is really neat isn't that unique I
mean that's such a neat character I really like this one and so colorful
okay where didn't I get this magical stick I don't know they just always
carry it around like a comfort item that is so cool oh my gosh I really like this
one I thought it was so pretty and so I don't know so well designed now one
thing that I did do I had trouble okay I've never done feathers before so you
know I did my best with the ability that I have okay that's kind of all we can do
right but the eyes I realize I messed up the eyes okay I do change one of them to
green here but I noticed on their actual OC that one of the eyes looks like it
