I have played No Man's Sky since day 1.
I have wished and wished to be given that game I saw in the 2014 E3 trailer.
But still in 2018, even after four massive updates...
No Man's Sky has not changed.
In a 2016 video, we predicted No Man's Sky wouldn't live up to the hype
and a lot of it still holds true.
After playing the latest update for days straight, I can confidently declare that No Man's Sky
is ultimately flawed.
The base it's built upon just doesn't work.
Since release, No Man's Sky has had 4 major updates -
Foundation, Path Finder, Atlas Rises and now NEXT.
They've added much-needed features to the original game including: Different modes,
base building, vehicles, updated visuals, mission systems, multiplayer, and so many others.
To Hello Games' credit, all these features have been added at no extra cost to players
and that is a phenomenal effort.
Many will argue that these features should've come with the original game.
But for me, that's beside the point.
Even with the new features, No Man's Sky still doesn't live up to the game I conjured in my head
when I saw that first trailer...
and as such, I'll always feel robbed by Hello Games.
When I saw the trailer, I was blown away.
I imagined No Man's Sky as this game that was procedurally generated but with the depth of Skyrim.
Countless races to interact with, countless stories to be told and explored.
An abundance of unique items that affected your statistics and so many different mission
types that I'd be entertained forever.
Never had I been so enamoured by a game pre-release.
I was convinced No Man's Sky was going to change my world.
I'll admit this sounds a little too farfetched to be real and a little silly on my behalf.
But can you blame me?
I was caught up in the hype that was No Man's Sky.
The hype created by their very own trailer, mind you.
Still, mine and many others hype aside, the trailers that were showcased, are nowhere
in this universe.
Planets filled with a culture of animals and flora, and an atmosphere that just feels…
complete.
Take away all of these galaxies and just make a few planets that resemble those trailers
and I'll be happy.
Those few planets encompass No Man's Sky for me; and the empty, endless universe that
populates No Man's Sky today doesn't and will never come close to capturing that magic
showcased in the early trailers.
This isn't a situation where you just forgive and forget.
That's not fair to me.
I paid for a game that I didn't get - and still don't have.
They've had two years to correct their mistake and give the players the game they purchased.
They haven't, and I don't think they can.
At its core, No Man's Sky is troubled.
You cannot promise infinite possibilities; it's only as infinite as the amount of variations
that are in the game.
No Man's Sky doesn't make its own shapes, it constructs bodies with a predefined list
of objects.
You get similar planets and animals almost everywhere you go.
You know what to expect, each planet has the same minerals, same variation of species - something
flies or bounces - and one of four races.
No galaxy or planet feels unique.
In fact I've run into the same exact planet in multiple galaxies.
Once you've spent a few hours looking around, everything becomes
'yeah I've seen something like this before'.
Travelling from planet to planet, galaxy to galaxy -
what's the point?
When everything's the same, the term 'exploration' means nothing.
What was promised from the the beginning was too good to be true, and that was a mistake.
The industry and gamers, me included, fell victim to the overzealous marketing that was
Hello Games.
And it's not like I didn't try to love it.
I spent hours playing the game when it came out and many more on this new update to really
dig in and find anything that resembles the game I thought I was going to get.
But I couldn't find it
and I'm not going to continue to search.
For me,
it's time to give up on No Man's Sky.
This was a tough video to make, because I really wanted No Man's Sky to succeed
and had still held out hope 2 years after release.
But it's been long enough and it's time to face the hard truth that this is not the
product Hello Games said it was.
If this was the game they marketed from the beginning, fair enough; but instead here we are.
I think more than anything, this has ruined Hello Games' reputation
and any project they want to pursue moving forward is going to be heavily scrutinised.
I do believe No Man's Sky was released as a good game.
But it came with such a poor reception from the community because of the false promises
made by Hello Games.
It just wasn't the game they said it was going to be.
