>> WELCOME BACK TO THE LINE AND OUR FINAL TOPIC THIS WEEK,
NOTED NATIONAL POLSTER EMERSON COLLEGE OF BOSTON RELEASED A
POLL THAT SHOWED THE GOVERNOR'S RACE IN NEW MEXICO
IS SUPER CLOSE RIGHT NOW.
MICHELLE LUJAN GRISHAM 42%, OPPONENT STEVE PEARCE AT 40%.
18% OF US WHO ARE REGISTERED POLLED UNDECIDED.
TOM THOSE NUMBERS SURPRISE YOU OR IS IT ABOUT THE POLSTER
THEMSELVES?
WHAT IS YOUR THOUGHT ON THIS ONE?
>> YES.
>> GRIFF THE LION IS THE MASCOT FOR EMERSON COLLEGE AND
WE WERE ALL BETTER NOT KNOWING THAT.
IT WAS ALSO THIS PARTICULAR POLL I AM NOT SURE, YOU KNOW,
WHILE I THINK IT REALLY BENEFITED THE FUND RAISING OF
BOTH GUBERNATORIAL CANDIDATES BECAUSE IT IS A CLOSE RACE, WE
HAVE TO RAISE MONEY, COME ON FOLKS.
SO, I AM NOT REALLY -- THEY ARE NUMBERS NOW.
IT IS A SNAPSHOT IN TIME BUT, YOU KNOW, THERE ARE MANY OTHER
THINGS RIGHT NOW THAT COULD SHAPE THE FUTURE OF THE
ELECTION THAT ARE OUT OF THE HANDS OF BOTH CANDIDATES.
>> GOOD POINT.
WHAT DO YOU MAKE OF THIS POLL, EARLY POLLINGS ARE TRICKY.
>> AT THIS STAGE YOU TALKED ABOUT THE METHODOLOGY, SAMPLE
SIZE, AND SO FORTH, DOESN'T ACCOUNT FOR THE ENTHUSIASM GAP
TOO WE ARE SEEING CLOSING SO RAPIDLY AMONG DEMOCRATIC
VOTERS.
WE HAVE SEEN A HUGE INCREASE IN VOTER TURNOUT AMONG
DEMOCRATS NATIONALLY.
WE HAVE SEEN IT IN ALBUQUERQUE MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS.
WE SAW IT DURING THE JUNE PRIMARY.
SO IT IS REALLY HARD TO GAUGE WHETHER OR NOT THIS IS GOING
TO BE THE REAL DEAL IN THE NEXT 60 DAYS.
>> LET ME ASK YOU AS A DEMOCRAT AT THE TABLE.
>> THE UNAVOWED.
>> I AM PROUD.
>> IS IT NOT BETTER FOR ALL DEMOCRATS WHEN YOU RUN A CLOSE
RACE, IS IT NOT JUST BETTER?
THERE IS A THING OUT THERE A FEW MONTHS AGO THAT SHE WAS A
SHOE IN FOR THIS THING.
>> THAT IS NOT ACCURATE EITHER.
YOU KNOW WHEN WE TALK ABOUT THE HOUSE RACES AS WELL, WE
DON'T WANT TO TAKE ANYTHING FOR GRANTED.
HISTORICALLY, THOUGH, IN THE JOURNAL REFERENCE THE
PRESIDENT PARTY IS TYPICALLY NOT THE ONE THAT WINS DURING
HIS FIRST MIDTERM ELECTION SUCCEEDING HIS INAUGURATION.
SO IT IS HIGHLY UNLIKELY.
IT WAS 1926 CALVIN COOLIDGE, LAST TIME PRESIDENT'S PARTY
PICKED UP THE SAME SEATS IN THE HOUSE.
SO IT IS LIKELY BUT I DON'T THINK THAT, YOU KNOW, CONGRESS
WOMAN MICHELLE LUJAN GRISHAM IS A SHOE IN.
TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTION, YES, IT IS A GOOD THING FOR
DEMOCRATS SO WE CAN CONSOLIDATE THE BASE AND BE
ENTHUSIASTIC ABOUT GETTING BEHIND HER, BUT I DON'T THINK
IT IS AS CLOSE AS THEY ARE SAYING IT IS.
>> IS IT CLOSE?
>> REALLY EARLY.
THERE ARE OTHER INDICATORS OUT THERE THAT MAYBE GIVE US A
BETTER SENSE.
ONE OF THEM IS THE SOMEWHAT RADICAL, AND I WOULD SAY
UNLAWFUL, POSITION THE SECRETARY OF STATE HAS TAKEN
THAT SHE CAN INSTITUTE STRAIGHT PARTY VOTING,
CONTRARY TO THE CHANGE IN LAW IN 2001, CONTRARY TO THE MANY
BILLS THAT HAVE BEEN RUN IN THE LEGISLATURE THAT HAVE DIED
TRYING TO REINSTATE IT. AND WE ARE GOING TO SEE THAT
LITIGATED BUT THAT TELLS ME THAT DEMOCRATS THINK THIS IS
TIGHT AND WHETHER OR NOT THE GOVERNOR'S RACE IS TIGHT I
DON'T KNOW.
I DON'T KNOW WHAT INTERNAL POLLING SAYS, BUT AFTER
SECRETARY OF STATE SAID SHE WAS GOING TO HOLD HEARINGS,
HELD OFF ON THIS UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE THAT IS A PRETTY
BIG STATEMENT.
>> WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THIS POLL?
IS THIS SOMETHING WE SHOULD TAKE SERIOUSLY.
WE ARE JUST BEFORE LABOR DAY AND EVERYTHING CHANGES
STARTING NEXT WEEK.
IT IS DIFFICULT.
>> I AM NOT OVERLY CONCERNED WITH IT.
I THINK IT WILL ALL SHAKE OUT AS THINGS GET CLOSER AND WE'LL
SEE WHAT HAPPENS.
I GUESS JUST ADDING ANOTHER COMMENT, I AM JUST HAPPY TO
SEE AN INDIAN WOMAN IN NEW MEXICO HAVING THE OPPORTUNITY
TO RUN. AND I THINK MY OWN BIAS IS
BECAUSE I LOVE MY GRANDMOTHER AND MY MOTHER AND WE NEED SOME
GOOD STRONG WOMEN.
>> WHAT DO YOU MAKE OF THIS OVERALL SITUATION HERE IN NEW
MEXICO?
WE HAVE GOT GARY JOHNSON IS BACK IN THE PICTURE.
WE HAVE GOT -- YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN -- IN THE SENATE RACE.
IT IS INTERESTING.
>> IT IS FUN TO WATCH.
SPECIFICALLY, GARY JOHNSON.
HE HELPS PEOPLE LIKE JANICE ARNOLD JONES.
YVETTE HERRELL FOR CD1 AND 2, DOESN'T NECESSARILY HELP
PEARCE AT ALL.
I THINK, BUT, YOU KNOW, IT BRINGS REPUBLICANS AND
INDEPENDENT RIGHT LEANING A CHANCE TO BE ENGAGED IN THE
RACE.
GETS THEM OUT TO VOTE, BETWEEN THAT AND WHAT WAS MENTIONED
ABOUT THE STRAIGHT PARTY, THE STRAIGHT BALLOT,
THAT COULD BE A HUGE GAME CHANGER AND, YOU KNOW, I AM
NOT NECESSARILY A BIG FAN OF IT.
I THINK YOU LET PEOPLE DECIDE FOR THEMSELVES, YOU KNOW, JUST
CHECKING JUST ONE BUTTON.
IT PUTS EVERYBODY'S CAMPAIGNS TO SHAME, BECAUSE IT SAYS, YOU
KNOW WHAT, IT DOESN'T MATTER BECAUSE WE ARE GOING TO FOCUS
ON ONE MENTALITY AND LET'S SEE WHO HAS THE MOST BALLOTS AT
THE END OF THE DAY. >> IS THIS A QUESTION OF
NOSTALGIA.
IT IS NOSTALGIC TO TALK ABOUT STRAIGHT PARTY VOTING.
IT SEEMED TO MAKE SENSE 20 OR 30 YEARS AGO.
>> YOU NEED TO MAKE VOTING AS EASY AS POSSIBLE FOR
EVERYBODY.
ANYBODY ELIGIBLE TO REGISTER TO VOTE.
THE BALLOT CAN BE INTIMIDATING.
WE HAVE SEEN STUDIES OVER AND OVER AGAIN.
THEY GO AND THEY EVEN SEE THE SAMPLE BALLOT AND IT IS LIKE,
A BALLOT, AND YOU SEE A WHOLE LOT OF DROP OFF DOWN BALLOT
AND THIS GIVES PEOPLE THE OPPORTUNITY TO PARTICIPATE IN
DOWN BALLOT RACES.
SO I APPLAUD THE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR DOING THIS, AND I
THINK IT IS ABOUT THE FRANCHISEMENT, MAKING VOTING
AS EASY AS POSSIBLE FOR THOSE ELIGIBLE.
>> YOU WANT PEOPLE TO VOTE FOR SOMEBODY THEY ACTUALLY
RESEARCHED OR KNOW AND IF YOU'RE JUST DOING, I DON'T
KNOW WHO TO CHOOSE BETWEEN THESE TWO PEOPLE, IF IT IS
PARTY, THEN, IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHO TO VOTE FOR, THEN DON'T
VOTE.
>> THEY ARE NOT.
IN MANY CASES.
>> I THINK IT DISCOURAGES PEOPLE FROM EVEN LOOKING AT
THE BALLOT.
YOU WOULD BE IN AND OUT -- I THINK WE ARE DUMBING IT DOWN.
>> HAVE A STRAIGHT PARTY BALLOT.
WOULD THAT BE OKAY FOR YOU?
>> I PULL A STRAIGHT PARTY VOTE BUT FROM A LEGAL
PERSPECTIVE.
THE TREND ACROSS THE COUNTRY IS TO ABANDON IT.
WE ELIMINATED IT IN 2001.
IT IS A LEGISLATIVE DECISION AND CERTAINLY, YOU KNOW, IF
LEGISLATORS WANT TO TAKE THAT UP, BUT IT IS NOT A SECRETARY
OF STATE DECISION.
>> TOUCH ON THAT.
THAT IS INTERESTING, WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT IT, IT IS ONE
PERSON'S DECISION.
SHE IS THE SECRETARY OF STATE BUT ARE WE BETTER OFF AS
ELECTORATE HAVING THIS SCHEME IN PLAY.
>> BASED ON WHAT I JUST HEARD, I THINK NOT.
>> I THINK NOT.
>> LEGAL ISSUES AND DIFFICULTIES.
>> RIGHT.
AND, YOU KNOW, I GUESS I WOULD BE CURIOUS TO KNOW WHAT THE
RESEARCH IS AS TO OTHER STATES AND WHY THEY HAVE CHOSEN TO
ABANDON THAT APPROACH.
>> PLUS, ARE YOU GOING TO HAVE A DECLINE OF THE STATE PARTY?
I MEAN BECAUSE YOU HAVE HAD, YOU KNOW, ENROLLMENT IN THE
DEMOCRATIC PARTY AND REPUBLICAN PARTY HAVE DROPPED
RESPECTIVELY AND THEY HAVE GONE TO THE MIDDLE, WHERE IS
THE DTS IN ALL OF THIS?
>> INDEPENDENTS, LIBERTARIANS AND GREENS.
>> SOCIALISTS AND COMMUNISTS.
>> RIGHT, ALL BUT THAT LAST ONE.
>> RIGHT?
>> GOOD POINT.
PEOPLE NEED REPRESENTATION.
LEGITIMATE REPRESENTATION NO MATTER WHAT THEY FEEL.
IF YOU HAVE ENOUGH PEOPLE TO GET ON THE BALLOT, YOU
DESERVE -- >> STRAIGHT PARTY TICKET
DOESN'T NECESSARILY MEAN THAT IS THE ONLY WAY TO VOTE.
PEOPLE STILL HAVE THE OPTION TO VOTE DOWN BALLOT AND TAKE
AS MUCH TIME AS THEY NEED TO RESEARCH THE CANDIDATES, TO
LOOK AT VOTING POTENTIALLY FOR SOMEBODY WHO IS AN INDEPENDENT
OR LIBERTARIAN.
IT DOESN'T NECESSARILY MEAN THAT IS THE ONLY MECHANISM ON
THE BALLOT MACHINE.
I THINK, IT IS JUST ANOTHER OPTION.
I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY HAVING ANOTHER OPTION IS SUCH A BAD
THING.
>> GOOD POINT TONIGHT ON ALL THE SUBJECTS.
APPRECIATE YOUR TIME.
ABSOLUTELY.
