Do you want to know what is the origin and history of Food Science & food technology?

Then stay right there cos In this lecture I'm going to talk about the History of Food

Science & Technology, for beginners.

(Intro) Hello everyone!

I'm Areeb Irshad and welcome to my channel FoodTech Simplified, where I post easy and

simple to understand lectures on Food Science & Food Technology, every week.

Before starting, let me just tell you that in this lecture, I have covered some of the

major events and turning points that has shaped the food industry that we see today.

And I have left out some minor events, inventions and researches just for the sake of keeping

this video short, sweet and simple for a beginner.

So, let's jump right into today's topic – 'History of Food Science & Technology

for beginners'.

Do you know that most of the food we see on the shelf of the supermarkets today, wasn't

available a 100-150 years from now?

This was because there were very few techniques to preserve the food.

The food would spoil very fast and a lot of people suffered from food poisoning and even

death.

The food we eat today, is completely taken for granted because it is cheap and easily

available.

The food you and I are eating today has been possible because of the efforts of a lot of

scientists, researchers, engineers, food technologists, nutritionists so that the food you are eating

is safe and healthy.

But the process of developing food wasn't invented overnight.

So, what is the history and how food technology originated?

Well if you ask me, I think the preservation of food has been abundant since early human

started farming.

Early humans realized the fact that they could not always hunt for animals or pluck fruits

from trees every day.

And if they stored the food like meat, it spoiled very fast.

So, they had to develop some preservation techniques for eating the food even when they

could not hunt, or the fruits and vegetables weren't available.

Some of the earliest preservation techniques include Sun-Drying, freezing, salting, fermentation

and so on.

The downside of the early preservation techniques was that they changed the flavour and texture

of the food along with huge loss of vitamins most of the time.

These techniques were not very effective for travellers and soldiers who needed a healthy

diet.

During the Napoleonic wars (1803-1815), the French Government offered 12,000 Francs to

anyone who could develop a method for preserving food for the military.

In 1809, a French confectioner and chef developed a method of sealing the food in glass jars.

The name of that French man was 'Nicholas Appert'.

The process was simple.

He sealed the food in a glass jar and then heated the jar for some time depending upon

the food.

The method proved to be successful and he was awarded 12,000 Francs.

The invention of canning is considered as the major turning point in the history of

food technology and food science.

Because of his remarkable contribution, Nicholas Appert is also known as the 'Father of Canning'.

And even canning is sometimes referred to as 'Appertization'.

Although canning was successful but the science behind its success wasn't known until 50

years later, when a French microbiologist and chemist showed that growth of micro-organisms

is responsible for the spoilage of beverages.

He also invented a process where milk was heated to a specific temperature for a specified

time to kill the spoilage micro-organisms.

That French microbiologist was none other than Louis Pasteur.

The process he invented is still prevalent in the dairy industry and wine industry as

well.

And in the honour of Louis Pasteur, the process is known as 'Pasteurization'.

In 1895, almost a 30 years later in Boston, Massachusetts, William Lyman Underwood of

a canning company worked with Samuel Prescott to develop the research which would further

lead to the concept of 'Thermal Death Time'.

A lot of people don't consider this event when it comes to the history of food technology,

but this was also one of the turning points in the history as their research was important

to determine the time-temperature combination for a food.

That means, for how long a food will be cooked at what temperature.

Since then, a lot of research and discoveries had been done but in the 20th century, food

safety was still an issue.

In 1960, the Pillsbury company, NASA and the USA army labs collaborated to develop safe

and healthy food for the astronauts.

Eventually, they developed a systematic preventive approach to ensure food safety and that came

to be known as 'HACCP'.

I'll do a separate video on HACCP because this is another important and big topic but

all you need to know for now is that HACCP is a preventive tool used in food industry

to ensure safety of the food.

HACCP is prevalent today in every food industry and food safety is incomplete without the

implementation of the HACCP program.

Since the development of HACCP, there have been a lot of rapid growth in the food technology.

Industrialists have adopted newer technologies to process the food in a faster and efficient

way.

So, these were some of the major breakthroughs in the history of food technology.

Let me know down in the comments if I have missed any important event/research.

Trap hives for stingless Bees 🐝 - Duration: 7:29.

Hi Nick from Australiannativebee.com here. Today

We're going to be making trap hives or lure hives for catching stingless bees out of the wild

This is not something that's done in Australia very often it's quite hard to do. So if you do go ahead and make a trap

Nothing moves into it don't

fall on your knees and cry

it's quite difficult and that's part and parcel why I'm making this video because the more people trying it and

Working out a method that works for them the more we're going to be able to share and refine

A way that everybody can catch their own

stingless bees.

The basic method in South America to do this is to dissolve

Bee resins in alcohol and

Though over there. They use plastic bottles. I'll be using bamboo

Just because I think it's a little bit more

environmentally friendly and for our hot climate I want something that's a little bit thicker on the walls than a

bottle, but

Have a watch and I hope you enjoy and I will be publishing my findings if any bees do move into

These trap hives over the next few years

The first thing you will need to do is find some suitable bamboo

I chose this bamboo because it has really thick walls on it.

I believe it is giant green bamboo, but I can't say that for sure

After cutting the bamboo down into manageable sections I took it home and drop sawed all the ends nice and flush

So I had closed sections of bamboo.

We are out in the workshop now

What I'm going to do now is I'm going to glue these

plywood circles on the tops of the

bamboo.

You can see I've put a 12 mil hole in them

the reason why I'm going to glue them on is because as

Bamboo dries out if you don't stop the end-grain from drying out really quickly. You're gonna get bamboo

That looks like this,

And those cracks will continue down the side and then you'll have a big problem

And the bees won't want to move in. So I'm going to be using gap filler. If you've ever

Stuck this on something and then tried to pull it off on its dry. It's really hard to get off

And it's non-toxic. So that'll be good for the bees.

But basically it's going to stop two things, gonna stop the water sitting there, and the main thing is that the bamboo doesn't

dry out in that position.

Once I've done that I'm going to cut up some

Metal strapping and that will go over the top of them so that they can be hung.

Okay, guys, we're back here. A night later.

All the straps are on the hives. All the lids are on the glued on to the hives

and

sanded off flush.

I

Ran out of straps. So I did some wire ones as well. I pre-drilled all these screws!

You don't want to be driving screws into bamboo

when it's green, because it will split at that point. So all

Holes are pre-drilled and all holes are on the up angle. So these wires actually here

and upwards on the

Up angle in there.

and yeah, you can see that all the tops have been given a

like light coat of long-lasting oil and

Later on. What I'll do is drill a six

probably a six mil hole in the base on the edge of these because that's the way the

node in the bamboo grows, and I just

am going to do that because I don't want any water if what it does get in there to

Prevent the bees from going in there. So that's what I'm gonna do

I'm also going to put a little blob of silicone on this center hole because I don't want that there either. So there you go

All right

Here I have four different types of resins taken from different locations

Inside stingless bee hives and we will be testing all of these

different types of resins to see which one works the best

Here in Australia. All right. We're back in the work shed. Now today, I took the resins out. I put them in the Sun

and

low and behold they combined chemically and

I don't want that. So I'm gonna put them sitting in a pot

With some water in it and heat up a containers with the lids

Loosened a little. Then I'm going to take each resin across here. And as you can see, I've got a range of different sized hives

each

hive in order of size will receive the same resin and so we will have

different sized hives trying the different types of resins and we'll be able to determine

Which hive is the most attractive size and I'll take measurements of that later.

So we'll have the resin and we'll have the size of the hive.

Basically I've got a funnel in there

Remove the funnel my thumb over it and shake it around and then label the hives.

Here's what we finished up with sealed at the top

Got a six... seven mil hole in the bottom that goes through inside and one other thing I wanted to show you. This is a

one of the many tips that Allan Beil told me before he died and that is

if you leave a perfectly round hole when you're providing a nest for stingless bees to move in you will get

Mud dauber wasps or solitary bees nesting in it. But if you press a little bit of stingless bee wax over the hole

you will get

bees moving in so

That's interesting

Don't leave a round hole put something there. If you haven't got stingless bees wax just make it so it's not round and

That's it. Hive

traps ready to go

OM Meditation for Beginners: 4 Steps Explained | Dhyanse - Duration: 7:06.

Think about what is it that creates harmony in the sounds, what is it that

when sounds are put in a certain combination

it's called harmonious and sounds when they are put hafazardly they are

disharmonious. It's irregular, there is a certain pattern and there is a certain..

right. Even if we are not musicians still we can differentiate between what's

pleasant what's harmonious when it comes to sound patterns and what's

disharmonious. Agreed? So in this perspective think of your own

body your own mind your own system also as an instrument which is producing

sounds which is producing vibrations and the pattern that you produce decides

whether you're experiencing harmony or you're experiencing disharmony.

Sometimes you know that well I don't feel harmonious sometimes you don't even

know that you are feeling miserable, something is wrong but you don't know

what it is. So there is a correlation of your energies your

sense of harmony your sense of disharmony to the sounds, to the energy

what you have in your system as an instrument. Now just like when you

tune a musical instrument to the right stones which make it harmonious

you use a reference, you use a tuner you use something that is set that you know

is harmonious and you tune yourself according to that. For the human system

we also have few sounds that are set that are standard that we know are

sounds of harmony which are in harmony with nature which are in harmony with

everyone else in this existence and if we tune ourselves to those sounds we

naturally fall into this inner peace into this harmony on so many levels that

you can't even consciously observe all those levels that are set into harmony

as you tune yourself into it. Last question, what are the sounds that a baby

makes? Anybody has kids small babies? Yeah apart from crying. So they're making

very basic sounds of Aa Uu Mm and this is something which we will utilize today

into a technique. These fundamental sounds of Aa Uu Mm

which in the Eastern traditions has been put together as aum as one word but it's

actually three sounds. And these are known as the primary sounds or

the primordial sounds they each have a certain relevance in our human system.

I'll explain what the relevance is and then we will go into the technique. This

technique that we are going to do today has four components three

sounds and the fourth silence. The first sound the Aa. The Aa sound when you utter

this Aa sound it's reverberating in your lower region of

the body. So everything below the chest you become aware of this region when you

utter the sound. This directly impacts your conscious state of mind your waking

state. When you utter the word or the sound of Uu it's vibrating in the

middle part of your physical body. So around your chest

region. It's impacting your dream state when you're sleeping,

this sound is corresponding to that state of consciousness. But we don't

go into that theory at the moment just wanted to tell you that this impacts

different layers of your mind. So this sound of Uu would impact your

subconscious layer of the mind and when you

utter the sound of Mm which is vibrating in your head this region. This is

related to your deep sleep state which means when you are in harmony with the

sound you will have a very nice deep sleep. Not in the session but afterwards

when you are doing this more regularly when your sound of mm is

in harmony in your system to the universe around you will feel much more

at ease to sleep you will have much calmer sleep and you will see you'll be

surprised by your own disappearing issues regarding sleep. And the last

component which is the silence, so when we utter these three sounds Aa Uu Mm at the end

if we do it in a sequence there is a silence that is created. Just like for

every music both the sound and the silence they both are important. Even the

silence that comes after you utter these three sounds it's also equally important.

When we will do this sequence we will utter the word Aa Uu Mm these three

sounds in a sequence and will come silence. How you will do it is for the

first ten minutes or five to ten minutes we will together utter these three

sounds and while we do that when we are uttering Aa then keep your awareness in

your lower region. When we are uttering the sound Uu then keep your awareness

in the middle region. If you are uttering the word Mm the sound of Mm then keep

your awareness in the head region. And the moment we move on to silence just

remain aware of yourself. Just remain aware of the silence. So we will do this

out loud for five to ten minutes, then we will move into a silence where you will

mentally do this for another five minutes. So you will not do this out loud

you will do this mentally you will just mentally repeat

this sequence of Aa Uu Mm and then silence in your mind. After doing

this for five minutes then you can sit in complete silence if you want to bring

your attention somewhere just try to bring your attention to the silence that

is created after the sound of AUM if not just sit in silence for 10 minutes

15 minutes as long as you can.

Police committee calls for independent probe into Hawks after Jonas's explosive testimony - Duration: 3:33.

Police committee calls for independent probe into Hawks after Jonas's explosive testimony

Police committee calls for independent probe into Hawks after Jonas's explosive testimony.

Parliament's portfolio committee on police has called for an independent investigation into the conduct of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI)‚ more popularly referred to as the Hawks.

The committee said on Saturday it had noted with serious concern the allegations made on Friday in relation to the conduct of high-ranking officials of the DPCI at the Judicial Commission of Inquiry into allegations of state capture.

Former deputy finance minister Mcebisi Jonas made a bombshell revelation at the state-capture commission of inquiry on Friday about how the Hawks attempted to deliberately sabotage the investigation into the Guptas attempt to bribe him.

The former deputy minister of finance said the head of the Hawks anti-corruption unit allegedly tried to force him to sign a false statement to halt the police investigation into the Guptas' attempt to promote him to finance minister in October 2015.

Jonas told Judge Raymond Zondo that he refused to sign a draft statement presented to him by Major-General Zinhle Mnonopi‚ who said they wanted to "kill the case" as it was a "DA matter".

He said Mnonopi told him‚ in the presence of his lawyer‚ "there is no case here".

Chairperson of Parliament's portfolio committee on police Francois Beukman said it was imperative that members of the DPCI‚ especially high-ranking members‚ should act without fear or favour to uphold the law‚ and that any dereliction of that duty should be properly investigated.

He noted that in terms of Section 17 L (4) (a) of the SAPS Act any member of the public who could provide evidence of serious and unlawful infringement of his or her rights caused by an investigation of the DPCI could bring a compliant to the DPCI Judge.

The current DPCI Judge is Judge Frans Kgomo‚ former Judge President of the Northern Cape Provincial Division of the High Court.

Beukman said while the committee acknowledged that the proceedings of the commission were still underway and that testimony would still be subjected to cross-examination and findings would be made by the commission‚ any serious allegations against DPCI members should be urgently investigated by the relevant authorities.

"The DPCI should lead in the fight against corruption and any allegations that comprise their role should be subject to independent investigation‚" said Beukman.

"The committee's view is that the Head of the DPCI‚ General Geoffrey Lebeya‚ should also‚ as a matter of priority‚ launch an internal inquiry into the allegations‚" he added.

How To Find Great Vintage Guitar Gear For Small Prices - Duration: 3:42.

Hey everyone it's Bruce here from WaterBear broadcasting from Small Pond studio

and today I'm talking about a very very well a subject that is very close to my heart

which is finding vintage gear sourcing it and using it

because generally it can sound really cool and it can have a lot of character

if you're prepared to put the research in and the time in to find it

and of course to keep it going because it's like a classic car or something

It needs a bit of love

We're gonna be looking in the usual places

We're going to be looking trawling through eBay in lots of countries not just the UK

because actually it's not that big a deal to import stuff

We're gonna be looking on reverb reverb.com

and we're also gonna be just keeping our eye out through the musicians community

word-of-mouth and stuff like Facebook

because it's amazing what crops up through the music community

Now I think the key thing we're also looking for a bargain here

We don't want to be spending loads of money

My advice is to steer away from

if you really want to play and this is about the music rather than hanging this stuff on the wall

I'd steer away from anything that's supremely collectable

like an early strat or an early 60s Les Paul Standard or something like that

You're just going to be paying too much money for the mystique around the instrument

So I've got some tips for you

Early 70s and mid 70s instruments in fact all the way up to 1983

there's a golden period in my view for guitar manufacture

so very happy with a lot of instruments from that era

They won't all be great but a lot of them will be

and in Japan culturally there's not a real big level of enthusiasm for second-hand gear

so if you type MIJ into your searches on YouTube for example or Reverb

that stands for Made In Japan

and you'll see a lot of people in Japan selling second-hand vintage guitars very very cheaply

You will have to factor in 60, 70 quid for a guitar for example on postage

and you have to factor in a little bit of import duty I think it's about 10%

but even so and there's some Japanese brands like Greco for example

that make incredible instruments and you can get them for an absolute steal

So we know if we go off the beaten track a little bit

if we do our research we can turn up some very interesting pieces

and this is an example so on first glance this looks like an early 80s marshall jcm800

which is in itself a classic amp

You'd normally expect to pay maybe 1300 for a good example of a 50 watt head for example

however this one is something a little bit different that I've been searching for

for 10 years and not only have I found it finally I've got it very very cheap

it was about 650 pounds on eBay

This amp didn't sell because it's unusual because it hasn't got a master volume

so it's perfect what I do

It's more of a vintage circuit it's got four inputs

Very very few of these were made in this format

So not only is it perfect for me not only is it an amazing amp

and I've only paid 650 quid for it but it's quite rare and it's got its own very unique character as well

So other things you might want to look at instead of looking at Gibson maybe look at Guild

Maybe look at the Japanese copies like Greco

Look at Italian guitar manufacturers or Swedish Hagstrom for example Dwight

So look for stuff that's just a little bit off the track and you'll find some incredible interesting body shapes

It looks good in video and also you'll just get away from that classic Les Paul Marshall Telecaster usual sound

There you go there's some top tips hope that's helpful
