Joshua gathered together all the tribes of Israel

Joshua addressed all the people.

"The Gods your fathers serve beyond the river,
"Or the Gods of the Amorites
"in whose country you are now dwelling.
"As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord."
But the people answered, "Far be it from us
"to forsake the Lord for the service of other Gods,
"for it was the Lord our God who brought us and our fathers
"up out of Israel, the land of Egypt,
"out of the state of slavery.
"He performed those great miracles before our very eyes,

- A reading from the letter of St. Paul to the Ephesians.
Brothers and sisters, be subordinate to one another
out of reverence for Christ.
Wives should be subordinate to their husbands
as to the Lord, for the husband is head of his wife,
just as Christ is head of the church,
he himself the savior of the body.
As the church is subordinate to Christ,
so wives should be subordinate
to their husbands in everything.
Husbands love your wives, even as Christ loved the church,
and handed himself over for her to sanctify her,
cleansing her by the bath of water with a word,
that he might present to himself
the church in splendor, without wrinkle or spot, or any such
thing, that she might be holy and without blemish.
So also husbands should love
their wives as their own bodies.
He who loves his wife loves himself,
for no one hates his own flesh,
but rather nourishes and cherishes it,
even as Christ does the church.
Because we are members of the body.
For this reason a man shall leave his father
and his mother and be joined to his wife,
and the two shall become one flesh.
This is a great mystery,
but I speak in reference to Christ and the church.
The word of the Lord.
- [All Together] Thanks be to God.

- The Lord be with you
- [Congregation] And with your spirit.
- A reading from the holy gospel according to John
- [Congregation] Glory to the Lord.
- Many of Jesus' disciples who were listening
said "this saying is hard, who can accept it?"
Since Jesus knew that his disciples were murmuring
about this, he said to them, "does this shock you?
"What if you were to see the son of man ascending
"to where he was before?
"It is the spirit that gives live,
"while the flesh is of no avail.
"The words I have spoken to you are spirit and life,
but there are some of you who do not believe."
Jesus knew from the beginning the ones
who would not believe, and the one who would betray him,
and he said "For this reason I have told you
"that no one can come to me
"unless it is granted him by father."
As a result of this, many of his disciples
returned to their former way of live,
and no longer accompanied him.
Jesus then said to the twelve,
"Do you also want to leave?"
Simon Peter answered him, "Master, to whom shall we go?
"You have the words of eternal life.
"We have come to believe and are convinced
"that you are the holy one of God."
The gospel of the Lord.
- [Congregation] Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ.
- This saying is hard, who can accept it?
'Member, Jesus said last week that you must
eat my flesh and drink my blood,
and that didn't sit well for people at that time.
For you and I those words are beautiful,
because we know that in the Eucharist
we are eating the body of Christ and the blood of Christ,
that we are consuming the very life of Christ.
So for us that's good news.
But for those people who were the early followers of Jesus,
remember, they didn't have a catechism book with them.
They were, this was all new for them.
And the messiah wasn't who they were expecting.
It was somebody else.
And so it was hard for them to even accept
that Jesus was the son of man, the son of God.
Yet, there were some then who couldn't accept it.
And so they turned around
and went to their former way of life.
I think when we see the people who didn't accept Jesus
then we look at our situation and we see
what a great gift we have, because no one can come
to the son except through the father,
I mean through the father.
He said here that we have to,
"The words I spoke unto you are spirit and life,
"but there's those of you who don't believe."
But he has the words of eternal life.
And the gift of faith which was given to us in our baptism
allows us to come here and have even a more complete
experience of the Eucharist than the early disciples did.
They had to grow in understanding what this was all about.
We're given the benefit of two thousand years
of knowing Jesus and seeing him present
in the holy Eucharist, and recognizing
his presence in so many ways.
When we come to celebrate mass,
he is present in the ministry of the priest.
He is present in the word proclaimed,
he is present in the assembly gathered together,
and most substantially present in the holy Eucharist.
In all of those ways.
And we have come to know, and we have come to believe,
indeed, that he is the son of God.
So that great gift of faith,
let's never take that for granted.
And let's remember that the faith
that we have is God's gift.
We can't do anything to earn that.
But we can do something to nurture it.
And we nurture it by what we do here, coming to mass.
So even Peter, when Jesus said to all the 12 who were
with him, he said, you know as the other ones were leaving
he said "Do you wanna leave too?"
and Peter, who said "Master, to whom shall we go?
"you have the words of eternal life,
"and we have come to believe and are convinced
"that you are the holy one of God."
Now remember, this is Peter,
who even after saying this denies knowing Jesus.
So just because we have an encounter with Christ,
and even though we have two thousand years
of experience, and we know that Christ is really present,
body, blood, soul, and divinity of the Eucharist,
it doesn't mean that we're saved from everything.
Even Peter, the one who he called rock, even failed,
but he's still rock.
And so Jesus takes, you know it's like
the saying goes that Jesus does not call the qualified,
he qualifies the called.
And our life is always being qualified by God,
and our lives are always being nurtured by God,
so thank God for this great gift.
And God does not stop loving even when we fail
in our being good disciples.
He still loves us.
His love is forever, and the gift of the holy Eucharist
is his presence, his real presence
in the here and now, until the time of our death
or the time of the end of the world.
At which time, again, we won't need the Eucharist.
Because we will be with Jesus in heaven in eternity.
And that's our goal.
May we thank God for this gift,
that we continue to be nurtured in word and sacrament,
and nurture one another by the gift of our faith,
and how we let the love of God shine through us.
Together we profess our faith using the apostles' creed.

the father almighty, creator of heaven and earth,
and in Jesus Christ, his only son our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

He descended into hell.
On the third day he rose again from the dead.
He ascended into heaven, and is seated
