When a new manager walks into a club, fear can take over players as they look to desperately impress instead of facing the axe
After years of working under the same boss at Arsenal in Arsene Wenger, many of the squad became far too comfortable knowing that their place wasn't under threat
However, for certain stars, including youngsters like Calum Chambers, a lack of game time has become an issue and even under Wenger, it was too hard to predict whether he had a future at the club and even more so under their new boss
But under Unai Emery - and at the end of Wenger's 22-year reign - it now appears that Chambers has been given a fresh start to display the huge potential he arrived with back in the summer of 2014 from Southampton
Over a month after Emery was announced as Gunners boss, 23-year-old Chambers signed a new long-term Arsenal contract and the Englishman will be thankful and motivated by the faith the Spaniard has showed in him
On the announcement of Chambers' new deal, Emery was very pleased to keep him on board: 'I'm delighted Calum has extended his stay with us
He played an important role last season and will be part of my plans this season.' After being sent out on loan to Middlesbrough during the 2016-17 season, his Arsenal prospects seemed bleak but last year provided Chambers with a chance to prove his worth
Chambers, who has won three caps for England, featured 24 times last campaign for Arsenal - playing a large part in their run to the Europa League semi-finals and impressing at the end of the Premier League season alongside Konstantinos Mavropanos
Now former Paris Saint-Germain boss Emery has been putting his players through their paces at London Colney, as he looks to find his ideal squad ahead of his debut season in England
And Emery's fresh and exciting era at Arsenal finally got underway with their annual friendly against Boreham Wood in July
Arsenal thrashed the National League side 8-0, with Emery deploying the majority of his squad, including the youngsters looking to burst onto the scene, such as Reiss Nelson, Eddie Nketiah and Jeff Reine-Adelaide
But perhaps the most intriguing element to have come out of the pre-season friendly, was Emery's use of Chambers as a defensive midfielder instead of a centre back in the second half
He was previously deployed in that role, sparingly during the 2015-16 season, and twice off the bench last season
And it appears Chambers is excited about the prospect of playing there in the future and clearly has the trust of his new manager to show off his abilities in an unnatural position
'The manager spoke to me about the position,' Chambers told the club's official website
'It's a new one for me.I played there a little bit growing up.It's a position I feel like I can grow to enjoy and out there today I felt good, I just need to train and practise in games in that position to get comfortable
' Whether Chambers actually plays in the defensive midfield role remains to be seen but it's clear that he has a future at the Emirates
When Chambers signed for Arsenal as a 19-year-old, the Gunners faithful were excited about what the future held for him, after shining against Crystal Palace and Besiktas in the Champions League qualifier's during his opening matches for the club in the heart of the defence
But his Arsenal career has not hit the heights the Arsenal fans had hoped it would and he was heavily linked with moves away last season - Crystal Palace and Watford among those interested
But now after receiving the trust of Emery, it's now time for him to really kick on and cement a place within the Arsenal squad with Per Mertesacker now retired and an injury-struck Laurent Koscielny slowly coming to the end of his career
Emery has been giving Chambers tutorials at their London Colney training base and was seen having a one-to-one chat with the defender on the sidelines at Boreham Wood
The Spaniard clearly views Chambers as an important member of his squad going forward but it will be very interesting to see how he is deployed during the 2018-19 season
While he played in midfield on the weekend, don't expect to see him playing their next campaign, with Granit Xhaka soon to be arriving back following his World Cup duties and Lucas Torreira just signing from Sampdoria
Meanwhile, Chambers shone with Mavropanos at the back end of the season and they are seen as the future of Arsenal's central defence, alongside his fellow Englishman Rob Holding
But with the signing of Sokratis Papastathopoulos, Chambers will very much have his work cut out to cement a starting spot
With Emery looking for a successful campaign - hoping to qualify for next season's Champions League at the first time of asking - it is likely the new boss will start with experience rather than talent
Experienced Greek defender Sokratis will likely play alongside Shkodran Mustafi in the heart of defence, despite the latter having been linked with a move to Juventus and struggling for form last season as Arsenal finished sixth
But this shouldn't deter Chambers as he will get chances this coming campaign. With Arsenal competing in the Premier League, Europa League, FA Cup and League Cup, the 23-year-old will have plenty of time to prove to Emery of his worth
And if Chambers impresses, who knows, he could well push Mustafi and Sokratis all the way for a starting spot and maybe usurp them as the season goes on
Arsenal and Emery see Chambers as an asset and alongside Mavropanos and Holding, the trio can be the future in North London
Remember, Chambers is only 23 and has the best years ahead of him. There is plenty of time to bed him in to Arsenal's starting XI and Emery will reassure him of that
