Brit who earned £371k from flogging Kodi boxes dodges jail but is hit with £20,000 fine

A TV engineer has been handed a suspended sentence and a fine of almost £20,000 after he was reported by BSkyB for selling Kodi boxes.

Daniel Brown, 28, made more than £370,000 by selling Internet Protocol TV devices (IPTV) gadgets which let customers watch sports channels for free, a court heard. Families across Britain use set top boxes to stream films and sports for free.

He showed customers how to watch subscription-only Sky TV shows for nothing by using the boxes he imported from China. Brown was spared jail despite a government warning that criminals could face up to ten years in jail for enabling illegal streaming.

Swansea Crown Court heard Browns crimes came to light after BSkyB complained to police and Trading Standards about his Maiz Box Ltd business. Prosecutor Lee Reynolds said: He imported the Android boxes from China then installed illegal software on them.

Mr Reynolds said the boxes allowed customers to access channels such as Sky Sports for free. He added: The company had a turnover of some £371,000 between June 2014 and March 2016.

What is a Kodi box? Kodi is a piece of software that pulls lots of different entertainment channels together, like Netflix and iPlayer. This allows you to watch online services on your TV.

It can be installed on TV boxes which you connect to your telly using an HDMI cable. The box, and the software are not illegal.

But it has a library which allows you to browse pirated TV, films and sports, which have been illegally obtained. Anyone selling a box with the intention for it to be used in this way will be seen as infringing copyright.

Brown sold the boxes via Facebook and offered technical back-up to customers to help them watch the subscribed channels. Brown, of Llansamlet, Swansea, admitted fraudulent trading.

David Leathley, defending, said while the boxes themselves had not been illegal, but to his shame Brown added the extra software. Judge Peter Heywood handed Brown an 18-month suspended sentence and ordered him to complete 180 hours of unpaid work.

He was also ordered to pay £19,996 costs. Earlier this year the Digital Economy Act was brought in, meaning offenders could face ten-year sentences for illegally streaming copyrighted content.

But Browns offence was charged under the Companies Act 2006. Copyright protectors have warned that those who buy Kodi boxes could be under investigation – as a digital paper trail from sellers who have been caught could lead to their doorstep.

The boxes could be a safety hazard, according to the Federation Against Copyright Theft, which seized several gadgets that didnt comply with electrical standards.

Since I was ten years old I wanted to play this sport professionally as a job. It

really is a dream come true. Getting a degree sets me up for life after playing.

beef up the benefits you get from Original Medicare. I'm happy to say you

can, and there are three kinds of coverage. Medicare Advantage plans,

Network doctors or hospitals you are free to use any doctor or hospital that

accepts medicare. Now it's important to know you are not required by Medicare to

buy any additional health coverage from a private insurer but many people do to

help pay for some of the health care costs not covered by Medicare. So that

Leave you comfort zone

many of us are going to have to admit

that we like to consider ourselves good people

because we don't do bad things.

One of the reasons we don't do bad things is because that would also cause us to leave our comfort zone.

So the fact is, we're just lucky that we like to be comfortable people.

That keeps us from doing bad things but it also keeps us

from doing

radically loving things

and so for many of us

this is going to be a week where we need to push us to leave our comfort zones

because love is labour

it's an expense of energy. As I've said before

Love is a work, it's a good and satisfying, beautiful work

it's an expense of energy which is why the

opposite of love, that is non-love

in it's essence is not hatred but laziness

and when we simply

say 'ah, I couldn't be bothered.'

'Hey do you think I should, nah, I'm not going to'

and we just ignore the leading of the spirit

the impulse that he brings, we say 'I just... Hm.'

We are living like goats, not sheep.

So we leave our comfort zone and then we love like crazy.

The world has suffered from too much timidity.

So we take risks and we love.

Listen, if at the end of this week you get negative feedback from people

saying, 'you're just taking too good care of me.'

'You're just loving me too much. You're crazy with your love.'

'It's overwhelming me, back off.'

Then alright.

Alright, then you know you went overboard

but my guess is, most of us will not get to that point.

Most of us, that's not our problem.

We need to love with wild abandon even to just begin

to look like Jesus

and so then, live

like you are serving Jesus

because you are.

Have this beautiful awareness of, 'this too is worship.

This too is not just me transcending self in order to engage with others

this is not just me helping people around me

this is about me serving my saviour.

This is a devotional experience. I'm on holy ground

as I help people in need.'
